1 Tidings from June-July 2018 Volume 59, Number 7 From the Pastor Pastor Mary Gary and I receive tons of requests for charitable giving. The requests come through the mail, , and social media. We would love to give to all the requests that come our way. But realistically we are unable to do so. Our priority for charitable giving is to give at least 10% (Biblical tithe) of our income to Zion Lutheran which is our home congregation. After giving to our congregation, then we give to other charitable organizations that we want to support and encourage in their mission. A few weeks ago I received a request in the mail for an organization I thought I would start supporting. I hadn t heard about the organization before but I believed in its mission as described in the mailing appeal. I was ready to write out a check to the charity but before I did so I went online to Charity Navigator to learn if that particular charity was wise in stewarding the financial gifts sent to them. After reading about that particular charity on Charity Navigator s website, I decided not to write the check. Charity Navigator was founded in It has become the nation s largest and most-utilized evaluator of charities. It rates over 9,000 of America s charities. The rating system examines two areas of a (Continued on page 4) New opportunities for Bible study June morning Bible study There will be a Wednesday morning Bible Study during the month of June, led by Gary Gilthvedt. 3 Zion Summer Book Club Pastor Mary Who: Zion members and the public What: Zion Summer Book Club When: Last Monday of the Month June 25, July 30, August 27 7:00 pm Where: Zion Grab your favorite cool beverage and get ready to enjoy some great summer reading! We re trying out a new thing by having a book club once a month. You ll get the whole month to read the book, then we ll gather together on the last Monday of the month to discuss it. You ll get an opportunity to share your observations, listen to others thoughts, and hopefully grow in knowledge and insight as we read some excellent books. You may purchase your own book from your favorite book seller, but options are listed after each book description below. Contact Pastor Mary with questions. Book of the month for June 25 Finding Faith in the Field by Benjamin Duane Hylden On April 6, 2007, Ben Hylden tried on his suit coat for the school prom. Then he sped toward nearby Park River, ND, for an appointment. Since he was running late, he drove too fast. The road was icy and he lost control of his car. The car flipped and Ben was thrown out of the passenger s door onto an icy field. What seemed to be the end of Ben s life turned out to only be the beginning of a remarkable journey of faith that showed him glimpses of life beyond this world which gave him a new perspective on what matters most. Along with that, he stresses that each person has a primary love language. When we know the primary love language of our spouse, children, loved ones and friends, we are able to love them in a more dynamic way that deepens the relationship as well as fills the other person s love tank. Order your book from the websites of Amazon ( ) or Barnes and Noble ( ). Δ Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, grant, we pray, that we might be grounded and settled in your truth by the coming of your Holy Spirit into our hearts. What we do not know, reveal to us; What is lacking within us, make complete; That which we do know, confirm in us; And keep us blameless in your service, through Jesus Christ our Lord. 4 charity s performance: Financial Health and Accountability & Transparency. Soon Charity Navigator plans on rating charities reporting of the results of their particular outreach. Charity Navigator s rating system helps donators make wise giving decisions. As a result of the rating system, charities are also encouraged to improve their performance. The website for Charity Navigator has top ten lists for different types of charities. It also gives information about the latest world events (natural disaster, crisis, fund-raisers, charity of the month) towards which a person may donate. The website includes many topics of advice under Tips for Donors. If you wonder about whether to give to a certain charity or not, Charity Navigator will provide helpful information that will help you make a more informed decision about your charitable giving. We are stewards of all that God has given us. Therefore, we want to steward to the best of our ability the financial resources endowed to us to be shared with others in the spirit of servanthood, joy, generosity and love. As each has received a gift, employ it for one another, as good stewards of God s varied grace; in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 4:10-11) We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: the giver, in generosity. (Rom. 12:6 & 8) Pastor Mary Gilthvedt Δ from Roseau County Girl Scouts A Night of Music, Motivation, and Meaning will be hosted by Roseau County Girl Scouts on June 24, at 6:00 pm in the Zion Sanctuary. The evening was designed to inspire and teach us to live free from limitations. Put faith in Gods plan and remove the limitations that stop you from doing and being the person you want to be. Keynote Speaker Dr. Kimberly Ondo is an acclaimed professor at Purdue University Global, experienced healthcare executive, singer, and author. But, most people know her as an ordinary woman with an extraordinary message to share. From an early age, Kimberly was told that she wasn't good enough. She wasn't smart enough, fast enough, skinny enough, pretty enough, or talented enough. However, she realized that if she lived the way others perceived her, she would never be good enough. She lived through the darkest of times watching and battling abuse, addiction, and heartache of a broken family. Life was hard and with the power of God and a newfound outlook she took back her life. Rather than try to change negative perception, she set out on an adventure that simply removed her own limitations. Please join Kimberly and learn how she uses her experiences and her love of music to inspire and motivate others to see their own potential. Opening speaker Kate Lundquist will speak on the power of a growth mindset, interpretative dance by Londa Olson, and singing by Miss Outstanding Teen Grand Forks will keep the night uplifting. Cost is $5 and 100% of the proceeds will help send 11 Roseau County Girl Scouts on an educational exchange to the Girl Scout Pax Lodge in London. The event is open to the public. Δ Council Meeting The next council meeting will be Thursday, June 21, at 6:00 pm. Δ Wednesday worship will take a vacation during the summer. Wednesday worship will resume on September 5. 4

5 A new way of communicating needed building maintenance and repairs to the Property Committee Dave Dalager There is a new Request for Building Repair Form for you to use to let the Property Committee know about any non-emergency or non-urgent issues about the building. Simply get a blank form from the bulletin board across from the office. Fill it out with your requested repair and put the completed form in Property Committee Work Request file folder. It s that simple! Thank you for your help in keeping our building in tip-top shape! Δ Get help now. No judgment. Only hope. Northstar Problem Gambling Alliance (HOPE) Things are all sparkly, clean, and fresh again! Thank you to all teams and everyone who participated in our Spring Cleaning Event. It s amazing how much work can get done with many hands. Windows have been washed, bathrooms cleaned, woodwork has been cleaned and dusted, fridges and freezer have been cleaned, cabinets washed inside and out, walls have been washed, doors and kick plates have been cleaned, air vents and light fixtures have been cleaned. Mechanical rooms have been organized; pipes and machines have all been cleaned. Each and every blue chair has been cleaned. Floors in the educational wing and sanctuary have been vacuumed and washed. We have a couple things left to complete but for the most part the cleaning is all done. The hard work that has been done by everyone is over and above what we pay our custodian to do on a weekly basis. Your willingness to give of your time towards this event will help keep our church looking new for years to come. Thank You, Ron Tveit Fern Knudson Judy Taylor Landin Δ A prayer for families Heavenly Father, we come as your children to praise you for putting us into families. Thank you for the love and nourishment we ve received and been blessed to give. We confess our need for your daily forgiveness and guidance in our families. Please grant harmony in our homes and help us always show respect and love for one another. In Jesus name. Amen. 6 Special donations are still needed to complete the furnishings project Vicki Dalager You can help to enhance our facility! A plan for furnishing our new gathering space, cry room, and education wing is ready to be implemented. The church council has approved a plan presented by the Décor Committee to: furnish the sitting areas on either side of the front entrance (in front of the windows across from the coffee bar and across from the restrooms) to provide a space for comfortable and cozy conversation; furnish the Cry Room so parents have a comfortable spot to land with their young children when needed; provide window coverings in the education/administration wing to eliminate the powerful glare of the sun, provide light control when necessary, and provide privacy for situations such as when members of a wedding party change clothes; add cabinetry to the alcoves in the hallway (on either side of the restroom doors) to house various literature such as Care Notes and committee communication files; and replace folding tables in the Gathering Space with attractive wood tables. If you are interested in supporting this furnishings project, please designate Furnishings on your donation, or consider utilizing our new online/mobile giving options to help make our beautiful new space even more inviting. Approximately $3,000 needs to be raised before the project can be commenced. Contact any member of the Décor Committee with questions: Joan Olafson, Karen Pederson, Fern Knudson, Renae Tveit, Vicki Dalager, Liz Hardwick, Cherlyn Kvarnlov, and Lynda Marvin. Δ Volunteers to learn the Soundboard at church are urgently needed Brenda Haats We are in a situation where people are needed to step forward and volunteer to learn to use the soundboard. It s not a hard job, but it s a very important job! Training will be provided. Having more people trained allows for the volunteers to be scheduled only once a month or once every 5 or 6 weeks. Lately, one individual has been carrying the bulk of the responsibility and it becomes too much of a burden for one person. Please contact Brenda Haats at or haatsie1985@ gmail.com as soon as possible with questions or to volunteer. In addition to soundboard attendants, people are needed to volunteer to be projector attendants. This is a super job for people in junior high or high school - and it qualifies for community service hours! Sign up in advance on the bulletin board across from the church offices. Δ 6 Calling all Volunteers Shawn Brunelle Have you signed up to be part of the Love Warroad event? We are in need of 100 volunteers to help with service projects and a community picnic dinner at The Point on August 18. Love Warroad is an exciting event that is being planned for our community to share God s love. Love Warroad will be held on August 18 with a pre-event rally on the 17th. The goal is to have area church members participate to show the body of Christ working together to impact the city of Warroad through loving acts of kindness and service. The event consists of three main components: a Friday evening kickoff, a Saturday morning and afternoon Kindness Explosion, and a Saturday evening Community Appreciation Dinner and music fest at the Point. More information will be forthcoming. Be sure to save the date and please pray about how you can be a part of this community outreach opportunity! Sign-up sheets to volunteer for Love Warroad are available on the bulletin board across from the church offices and in the Gathering Space at Zion. Shawn Brunelle is the volunteer coordinator for Zion. You may contact her at with questions. Δ

8 Summer Greetings! VBS Day Camp will be held at Zion July The theme for this year s Pathways Day Camp is This Changes Everything and we will be exploring how grace is a gift freely given by God, shown to us through God s own Son. This gift frees us from the weight of sin the work of salvation belongs to God, and it has already been done! We are then free to live our lives in response to this gift, with a new perspective on who we are and how we see and treat ourselves and those around us as equal recipients of God s grace. We have a fun and Spirit-filled week planned for you! It is going to be an action-packed week where we ll play lots of games, laugh, worship our awesome God through crazy camp songs, and praise our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. You will have a wonderful time! Here is some important information for you to know: Zion VBS Daycamp July 23-26, 2018 There will be a congregation picnic gathering with the Pathways counselors at the Point on Sunday, July 22. Join us for fun and games beginning at 4:30 pm with a potluck supper at 5:00 pm. Day Camp starts each day (Monday through Thursday) at 11:30 am. Campers should be dropped off between 11:15 and 11:30 am. The Day Camp Team (both Pathways and congregational volunteers) are not responsible for children dropped off prior to 11:15 am. Day Camp ends at 5:00 pm. Campers must be picked up at this time. Campers need to bring a sack lunch and a water bottle or screw top drink container each day. Please label these! Snacks and beverages will be provided in the afternoon. All campers must have a registration/health form on file before participating in the Day Camp program. This can be turned in on Day 1 of camp. Go to zlcw.org and check Quick Links to download the forms. We will be outdoors at times during our Day Camp experience. Dress for the weather. Sunscreen and a hat to wear outdoors are encouraged. Wear tennis shoes or other shoes appropriate for running games. Sandals are discouraged. Campers are welcome to bring a Bible to camp each day, but it is not required. Please ensure jackets, hats, and extra clothing are labeled with your child s name. Plan to take part in our Potluck and Kids Showcase on Wednesday, July 25. The potluck begins at 5:30 pm with the showcase beginning at 6:15 pm. The kids have a blast performing for their family and friends, and the food is always great too! Spread the word and bring your friends! This camp is open to all kids entering Kindergarten through 6th grade in the fall of They 8 do not have to attend Zion to attend VBS. Our offerings this year will be for the ELCA Good Gifts Water Wells. Clean water is one of the most powerful ways to create change in the world. With the installation of a water well, or spring box, as many as 500 families gain access to clean, safe water. When a community gains access to clean water, everything changes. Women and children don t spend hours gathering water. Communities are healthier. People can work, farm and go to school. And together, they build stronger economies and a future filled with hope. We encourage any or all of our Day Campers and families to help contribute to this great cause. Anything is appreciated. Look for registration forms and contribution sign-up sheets coming soon. Please contact us to volunteer or if you have any further questions about Day Camp at Zion. Please keep this letter handy for future reference. See you at camp! 9 Worship & Music Committee: For this we give thanks! Shelley Galle We hope all of you are as excited as we are about warm weather finally arriving! It s the time of year where our bodies and minds are finally able to break out of the winter cabin fever and into outside activities! We are also excited to welcome back our Snow Birds! During these times it is very easy to not be in the mood to gather with your Christian family and worship together. Just remember, Jesus doesn t EVER take a break from you. We come to worship Him who gave so much for us so that we may have eternal life. Worship & Music has so many things to be thankful for! Due to generous donations/ contributions, we have raised the $1000 needed to purchase new pew bibles! For this we give thanks! With another generous donation we were able to purchase pew Bibles for our younger children in order that they, too, can experience scripture through words and/or pictures. For this we give thanks! There are special people in our congregation that are willing to supply beautiful fresh flowers to adorn our sanctuary throughout the summer. For this we give thanks! On May 20 (Pentecost), we were blessed with worship music from Ava Gross (vocal) and Robert Runnels (marimba). In case you missed them, they both said they would be willing to bless us again more this summer. For this we give thanks! On May 20 we were also honored to have included many from the congregation in a Reader s Theater for the first reading: Marty Howes, Ava Gross, Elizabeth Grove, Rick Arntzen, Dave Dalager, Steve Hagen, Julie Jones, Cindy Sandahl, Dr. Deb Erickson, Pastor Gary Gilthvedt, Liz Hardwick, Dan DeMolee, Shelley Grove, and Brian Schaible. For this we give thanks! June 26 we will be hosting another wonderful concert from the L ambizioso Duo followed by an Ice Cream Social! For this we give thanks! We have scheduled the All- State Lutheran Choir for a concert in June 2019!!! Please watch for further information on this as time approaches. For this we give thanks! With Zion beginning to host performances, we have begun to discuss and research the purchase of a grand piano dolly and an adjustable piano bench. This would allow the grand to be moved to a more central location for the performance. It is very hard on the piano legs to move it across the carpet with the small wheels currently on the instrument. A dolly would make it less stressful. Plus, an adjustable piano bench accommodates the different height requirements for pianists as they play our grand. We ask for prayers as we research this project. For this we give thanks! We are excited to bring back to the sanctuary our Hymn Sing (or stump the pianist as my husband calls it) on the last Sunday of each of the summer months - May through August. On these Sundays, we will be taking requests of your favorite hymns from our hymnals beginning at 8:45 a.m.prior to worship. For this we give thanks! 9 We are also excited to participate in the Love Warroad Project August How great is it that Christians from all over Warroad come together to do projects for our own city serving young and old alike!!! Shawn Brunelle is our coordinator from Zion for this event; plus Shelley Galle and Jenée Provance are coordinators for the Christian music performed by the area churches musicians that will be played during the free picnic following all the projects on August 18. For this we give thanks! Thank you so much for being a part of the work of worship at Zion Lutheran Church. Let us continue to celebrate the season of Pentecost and follow the Holy Spirit inside each and every one of us. Shelley Galle, Chr Diane Erickson Carol Hallan, Sec Brenda Baumann, Vice-Chr Joan Powell Kari Sprenger Jeff Galle, Council Rep Pastor Mary, Ex-Officio Δ Memorial Committee is looking to the future! Now that we are in our new building the Memorial Committee has a renewed enthusiasm! We would like to remind everyone that you can designate your gift in memory of or in honor of a loved one. Please designate your gifts to the Zion Building Fund or the Zion Memorial Fund. Δ

We were able to ship 103 quilts, 3 ready made quilts/ comforters, 63 personal care kits, and 6 pounds of soap. Thanks to Julius and Joan Powell who delivered the quilts to Roseau on May 4. We want to thank everyone who came to the Community Center to help put the quilts together. Thanks to all those who donated fabric, thread, mattress pads, bedspreads, sheets, and/or any supplies that helped us complete the quilts. Many thanks to Muriel Olson who put 15 quilts together and shipped them with ours. Thanks once again to Delores Saul who sewed many tops. If you have any items you wish to donate to the quilters, please drop them off at the church anytime throughout the summer. We will quilt again this fall. We usually start the Monday after Labor Day and work on Mondays during the months of September and October. Think about joining us in September. We welcome all helpers. Δ

12 Mission Endowment Fund Quarterly Report Lori Schaible During the current quarter, the Mission Endowment Fund Committee allocated $100 for the purchase of a gas card for an individual's medical travel needs. The committee also recently updated their brochure explaining the Mission Endowment Fund and how to contribute to it. This brochure is included in this issue of Tidings! Some brochures can also be found in our church Gathering Space. Δ Synod Council Addresses 2017 Mission Support Shortfall From the NWMN Synod During their April 21 meeting held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Plummer members of the NW MN Synod Council approved a series of steps to address the $110,000 shortfall in congregational mission support last year (resulting in a $48,000 budgetary deficit). The following steps will be reflected in the revised synod budget as well as the proposed synod budget to be considered at Synod Assembly next month. Effective August 1, 2018 Pr. Paul Erdal will conclude his time of service on the synod staff, and Pr. Keith Zeh will become the fulltime Director for Evangelical Mission (DEM) for the NW MN Synod. (Pastor Zeh has been serving as shared DEM with the Eastern ND and NW MN Synods.) The budgetary savings here will come from the fact that Pastor Zeh is an employee of the ELCA Churchwide Organization; the synod only covers his travel and other expenses while working on the synod s territory. With these staffing changes the synod s core staff will be half of what it was in 2007 when Bp. Wohlrabe was first elected from ten positions down to five positions. The synod council thanks Pastor Erdal for his fine work on the synod staff over the last three years, and they wish him well as he moves into a new ministry, details of which will hopefully be announced at the Synod Assembly. Following our June 8-9 synod assembly, members of the synod staff will reduce the amount of travel they do within the synod, especially in serving the call processes in congregations. This will be accomplished by training conference deans to conduct exit interviews and meet with congregational councils whenever a pastor resigns from a Call in the synod. Rather than traveling to individual congregations to orient call committees on-site, the synod pastoral staff will employ other methods for conducting these orientations, such as synod staff may meet with two or more call committees in a mutually-agreeable location; synod staff may offer call committee training at regular intervals in Moorhead which call committees may choose either to attend in person or via the teleconferencing tool Zoom; synod staff may occasionally conduct an orientation for an individual call committee using Zoom. When traveling to congregations of the synod, pastoral staff members 12 will share information on the cost of travel and provide an opportunity for congregations to reimburse the synod for at least some of those travel costs. The synod will also solicit the gift(s) of one or more good, low-mileage, automobiles to be owned by the synod and made available to synod staff members for the carrying out of their official duties. Finally, the synod council appointed two taskforces to work over the coming year, one of which will rethink how the synod supports youth and family ministries as well as the LYO board and LYO gatherings. The other task force will study the current 47% synod/53% ELCA churchwide mission support sharing formula and evaluate the partners in ministry portion of the synod budget. Recommendations from both task forces will inform the budgeting process next year when the synod revises its budget. It goes without saying that, although we need to take these steps to be fiscally responsible, observed Bishop Larry Wohlrabe, we also encourage congregations to prioritize their giving toward mission support. Last year s mission support shortfall happened because 82 congregations reduced their annual mission support by an average of $2,025 per congregation, which is not a huge number. What this statistic illustrates is that your congregation s mission support contributions are vital. Δ
