2 Christ is Risen! He is Risen indeed! This Easter announcement brings us to the core of our belief. It is the reason for gathering in worship, becoming followers, welcoming others to walk with us in faith. It is also a basis for our behavior for how to bring the presence of our risen Lord into what we say and do. Our community of Warroad has been blindsided by some very harmful behavior. Under the banner of being anonymous, phone calls have been made and ugly letters have been sent. I want to thank Joe Olafson for taking hold of this illness in our community and drawing a line in the sand that states clearly No More! No more personal attacks, no more erosion of the character of Warroad. It is too easy to let the attacks go by, hoping that they will just go away. However, words hurt and they live on long after they have left our mouths, long after we have penned the words on paper. By not responding to those words and actions, they become the way we are known. Let me put it even more personally for the community of faith called Zion. We are in a call process. If you were a pastor invited to consider Zion as your place of service, would you want to bring your family into a parish setting where such behavior is acceptable? I think you know the answer. It is time to say no more to such debasing attacks again and again. It is not a matter of agreeing or disagreeing with the members of the school board as they serve on behalf of this community, it is expressing viewpoints and concerns in a civil and respectful manner. I pray for healing for our school board members and their families. I pray for those who need our guidance into a time of confession and repentance. May this hurtful activity become a foundation for quiet Lutherans to stand up and say not only No More! but also How may I help? Having said this regarding our community of Warroad, what shall we say to behavior that affects us as members of Zion? When you hear the moaning and groaning and complaining that has occasionally occurred in the parking lot, at Sunday brunch, or during various meetings, how do you respond? Go back to the first paragraph, then prepare to be less quiet as a Lutheran and more inviting of others to help, to serve, to make a difference that rings with the words He is Risen! Pastor Bruce Δ Break out of the winter doldrums with a Marriage Encounter weekend! Get warm and cozy with private time and one-on-one attention with your spouse on a Lutheran Marriage Encounter Weekend. 3 The answer is Easter After the April 2013 suicide of his 27- year-old son, Matthew, pastor and author Rick Warren was often asked how he was able to keep going. His frequent reply? The answer is Easter. In the Easter sermons Warren preached the following year, he emphasized that Jesus resurrection is the answer to discouragement, defeat and devastating trials. The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus happened over three days, Warren explained. Friday was the day of suffering and pain and agony. Saturday was the day of doubt and confusion and misery. But Easter, that Sunday, was the day of hope and joy and victory. You will face these three days over and over and over in your lifetime. And when you do, you ll find yourself asking, as I did, three fundamental questions. Number one, what do I do in my days of pain? Two, how do I get through my days of doubt and confusion? Three, how do I get to the days of joy and victory? The answer is Easter. M A R K Y O U R C A L E N D A R! God s work. Our hands.
