1 Shari n g Go d s Lo v e a n d P r o mi se of Salva t i on Thr ou g h C hrist Cross & Crownicle Volume XXXV Issue 8 September, 2016 Dear Friends in Christ, It is with great joy that I accept the call you have extended to me to become your pastor. It will be an honor to serve you. It was a pleasure to meet everyone at the congregational meeting and I look forward to starting in the office after Labor Day. These next few weeks will be a time of transition as I learn the ins and outs of the ministry at Cross and Crown. I ask your help as I learn all your names and faces. (Please allow me grace when I don t get your name correct!) I would like to take as much time as possible over the next few months to sit down with families and individuals, to hear your stories and to find out what are the gifts and assets of this church. It will be a time of discernment and learning from one another. My family will be an active part of the church. My husband Ben works in Rockford in Computer Information Security. Our three sons, Tate aged 11, Jasper aged 7, and Corin aged 1, will be a noisy addition to worship on Sundays. My mom, Sally and my grandma Ruth also live in the area and will be joining the congregation. Please welcome them and help them find their place at Cross and Crown. I would like to thank the Call Committee for their hard work. It was very apparent in our interviews that they care about this church and its future. I would also like to express thanks to the Church Council for their leadership and hospitality. And finally, I give great thanks to Pastor Marilyn Hanson for her wonderful pastoral leadership and support of Cross and Crown as your interim pastor. I look forward to seeing you in worship on September 11th! Blessings, Pastor Megan Vaughan PASTOR MEGAN S INSTALLATION Pastor Megan Vaughan will be installed as the pastor of Cross & Crown Lutheran Church on Sunday, October 17 at 3:00 p.m. Bishop-elect Jeff Clements will preach and preside at this service. Mark your calendars now as you won t want to miss this important event in the life of this congregation!
2 PAGE 2 CROSS & CROWNICLE VOLUME XXXV ISSUE 8 PRELUDE - A BIBLE STUDY FOR WOMEN Women, you are invited to join the Prelude Bible Study group that meets on the 3 rd Thursday morning each month at 9:30 AM in the Library. Our study theme for September 15 th will be When God Forgives the Guilty, and is based on the story of the prophet Jonah who had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. The study was written by Meghan Johnston Aelabouni, a full-time Ph.D. student and mom to three, and is in the Women of the ELCA s monthly publication Gather, which is available on the table in the Narthex. We do hope you ll join the group in September. A cup of coffee and a healthy snack will await you as you arrive. OWLS POTLUCK & BIBLE STUDY Looking for something fun to do each month? If so, consider yourself invited to join the OWLS (Older, Wiser, Lutheran Saints) of the congregation for a potluck meal and Bible Study. They ll be meeting next on Thursday, September 8th at 11:30 AM in the Choir Room. There will be an amazing assortment of delicious food and lively conversation over lunch. We then have about a 30-minute Bible Study, connecting scripture with some current event of the day. Newcomers are always welcome! Church picnic following Rally Day Celebration Sunday September 18 th Hot dogs, hamburgers, buns, condiments, and beverage will be supplied along with paper supplies. Please bring a dish to pass (salads, casserole, chips or dessert) although it is picnic style we will be in air conditioned comfort in the children s chapel. Mark it on your calendar! CONFIRMATION DAY SEPTEMBER 25 On Sunday, September 25 at the 11:00 AM worship service, four of our young people will make public affirmation of their faith. Congratulations to the following students: Elizabeth Martinez (daughter of Fred & Cathie) Isabelle Myers (daughter of Cris & Katherine) Ashlynn Swartout (daughter of Christopher & Christy) Olivia Warneke (daughter of Matt & Bobbie)
3 PAGE 3 CROSS & CROWNICLE VOLUME XXXV ISSUE 8 Dear friends in Christ, For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven. (Ecclesiastes 3:1). So writes the author of the book of Ecclesiastes. We know it is true. The seasons come and go. Change is all around us. Here at Cross & Crown, life is about to change as well. I will be completing my ministry with you in early September. Therefore, this will be my last pastor s page while serving as your interim. As you know, a congregational meeting was held on Sunday, July 17 to vote to extend a Letter of Call to Pastor Megan Vaughan to serve as pastor at Cross & Crown. The vote was very favorable and with God s leading, she has accepted the Call to serve here. I am excited for this congregation as it prepares to embark on a new beginning. That being said, I will certainly miss all of you. I will miss my drive to and from DeKalb each day. It has been such a blessing to serve in ministry with all of you. You warmly welcomed me when I came last November and walked alongside me and supported me throughout the many seasons of ministry here at Cross & Crown. Together, we have accomplished some good things and we have also dreamed and envisioned what your future could be. I believe that the future of this congregation is very bright. We have a very capable staff in place here and an amazing group of lay volunteers to do the work of ministry in this congregation and throughout the community. It is my hope and prayer that you will warmly welcome Pastor Megan, her husband Ben and their children - Tate, Jasper & Corin. Pray for them in this time of transition in their lives as I am certain they are already praying for each of you. Take time to get to know them. Invite them into your hearts and homes. Offer to assist them in their transition in any way that you can. Please accept my deepest gratitude for the joy of serving as your pastor during these months of transition in your congregation. Many of you have asked what I ll be doing next. After speaking with our bishop-elect this past week, it appears that I will have a new appointment in the very near future. In the meantime, my daughter Meghan, who attends worship regularly with me, will be starting her senior year at DeKalb High School. I ll enjoy attending some of the extra-curricular activities she is involved in. She is one of the drum majors of the marching band and also plays on the tennis & soccer teams at the school. My older daughter Breanna, a Graphic Design major, will be moving to Kenosha, WI on Labor Day to begin her junior year at Carthage College, one of the colleges of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Please know that the Cross & Crown congregation, with all of its wonderful members, will always hold a very special place in my heart. In thanksgiving for each of you, Pastor Marilyn Hanson

Please Note: Cross and Crown will have only one worship service that day. BOOK STUDY RESUMES The weekly Book Study group will resume on Tuesday, September 27 at 7:00 PM in the church library. The first book we ll read is Church Worth Getting Up For by Chuck Gutenson. In this thoughtful and convicting book, the author introduces ten church leaders who offer helpful insight from their own experience in churches from California to Georgia. As one review said, This is not a book on church marketing. There are no tips on how to dress up what we ve already got to make it more appealing. This is a book that will challenge, embolden, and equip us to make church worth getting up for, this Sunday and every Sunday. Books for the group will be ordered on September 15, so stop by the church office or us at info@crosscrown.org, and let us know if you would like a book. Participants bear the cost of their own book but we ll place the order together. Everyone is welcome to join the study!
