1 Shari n g Go d s Lo v e a n d P r o mi se of Salva t i on Thr ou g h C hrist Cross & Crownicle Volume XXXV Issue 6 June, 2016 A letter from our Presiding Bishop The Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), has issued a letter in response to the June 12 shooting that claimed the lives of 49 people at a nightclub in Orlando, Fla. This is the deadliest mass shooting in U. S. history. I share her letter with you this month in place of my regular column. Pr. Marilyn Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, "So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them." Genesis 1:27. We are killing ourselves. We believe that all people are created in God's image. All of humanity bears a family resemblance. Those murdered in Orlando were not abstract "others," they are us. But somehow, in the mind of a deeply disturbed gunman, the LGBTQ community was severed from our common humanity. This separation led to the death of 49 and the wounding of 54 of us. We live in an increasingly divided and polarized society. Too often we sort ourselves into like-minded groups and sort others out. It is a short distance from division to demonization. Yesterday, we witnessed the tragic consequences of this. There is another way. In Christ God has reconciled the world to God's self. Jesus lived among us sharing our humanity. Jesus died for us to restore our humanity. God invites us into this reconciling work. This must be our witness as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The perpetrator of this hate crime did not come out of nowhere. He was shaped by our culture of division, which itself has been misshapen by the manipulation of our fears. That is not who we are. St. Paul wrote, "So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new. All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ" (II Corinthians 5:17-20). (Continued on Page 3)

2 PAGE 2 CROSS & CROWNICLE VOLUME XXXV ISSUE 6 PRELUDE - A BIBLE STUDY FOR WOMEN Women, you are invited to join the Prelude Bible Study group that meets on the 3 rd Thursday morning each month at 9:30 AM in the Library. Our study theme for July 21st will be The Heart of the Matter Seeking God, and is based on the theme verse from Jeremiah 29:13, When you search for me, you will find me; if you seek me with all your heart. The study was written by Angela Shannon and is in the Women of the ELCA s monthly publication Gather, which is available on the table in the Narthex for those who plan to attend. We do hope you ll join the group in July. A cup of coffee and a healthy snack will await you as you arrive. OWLS POTLUCK & BIBLE STUDY Looking for something fun to do each month? If so, consider yourself invited to join the OWLS (Older, Wiser, Lutheran Saints) of the congregation for a potluck meal and Bible Study. They ll be meeting next on Thursday, July 14th at 11:30 AM in the Choir Room. We always have an amazing assortment of delicious food and lively conversation over lunch. We then have about a 30-minute Bible Study, connecting scripture with some current event of the day. Newcomers are always welcome! VBS Thank You!! Our Vacation Bible School was held this year from June 6 th through the 10 th. Our theme was Cave Quest, Following Jesus the Light of The World. Children learned that Jesus gives Hope, Courage, Direction, Love, and Power when you follow him. We had 31 congregation members, both adult and youth, helping during the week. Thank you to all who participated and made this such a special week for the 70+ children who attended. Our awesome God planted seeds through you that the children will remember forever. One of my favorite quotes comes from Max Lucado. To the world you are one person, but to one person you may be the world. Those who helped were the world to the children. Thank you! Warren Jacobs MISSION TRIP NEWS This year, 18 of us will be heading out to Buffalo, New York, for our Mission trip. We leave on July 8 th and will return on the 16 th. We will work with five others we have never met before. The work will consist of painting inside and outside homes, taking down and rebuilding decks, building wheel chair ramps, working on the roof of mobile homes and much, much more. Please pray for safety for those who are attending as well as a meaningful God filled adventure.

3 PAGE 3 CROSS & CROWNICLE VOLUME XXXV ISSUE 6 Presiding Bishop s Letter Continues: Our work begins now. We need to examine ourselves, individually and as a church, to acknowledge the ways we have divided and have been divided. We must stand with people who have been "othered". We must speak peace and reconciliation into the cacophony of hatred and division. We must live the truth that all people are created in God's image. This morning your church wide staff came together to mourn and to pray. We prayed for those killed in Orlando and remembered the Charleston Nine killed only a year ago. We prayed for the family of the shooter, for our LGBTQ brothers and sisters and for our Muslim brothers and sisters who now face the threat of retaliation. And we prayed that the Prince of Peace will bring us to the day when we stop killing ourselves. Your sister in Christ, Elizabeth A. Eaton Presiding Bishop, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Highlights of the Northern Illinois Synod Assembly Augustana College, Rock Island, IL June 16-18, 2016 Celebrated the ministry of Bishop Gary & Polly Wollersheim on Thursday evening, giving thanks for their 18 years of faithful service to our synod.
