1 News from Zion News from Zion Z i o n e v a n g e l i c a l c h u r c h ~ S c o t t s b l u f f, N e b r a s k a O C T O B E R, Z i o z i o n s c o t t s b l u f f. c o m W w w. z i o n s c o t t s b l u f f. c o m WORLD DAY OF COMMUNION Sunday, October 6th communion will be served in both services. F ro m t he pa s to r s d e s k... Say Cheese! For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height - to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:14-19 NKJV If you haven t already signed up to have your picture taken for the new church directory, let me take this opportunity to ask to do so. Our involvement in the family gatherings of the local church is a fleshing out of the unseen reality of our membership through Christ in God s family in heaven as Paul so brilliantly points out in the verses above. The local church is where faith finds feet and hands and hearts and faces. It is where we learn in practice to love P l e a s e Ta k e n o t e... Mission Prayer Partners for October, Rick & Fairy Hattan/Awana 13-Jews for Jesus 20-Tom & Sandi Hofmann/Awana 27-KCMI Radio GREBEL & COFFEE Saturday, October 5th 7 a.m a.m. PRE-ORDERS and HELP welcome. Sign up at the Welcome Center! Or call as God loves and to celebrate the joys and sorrows that are shared among us as followers of Christ. It is where we hear together from our heavenly Father through his word and work together for his kingdom. It is where we learn that being in Christ is not a Lone Ranger faith, but a matter of joining in and participating in that community of believers which only together constitutes the body of Christ on earth. It is where we connect with one another, encourage one another and grow together in the grace of our Lord and Savior who is the head of his body, the church. As our church turns 100 next year, I look forward to going through the pictures one by one and praying for each family and individual that calls Zion home, thanking God for what is ours together in Christ. 3 Page 3 NEWS FROM ZION ~ AWANA NEWS ~ We had a wonderful start to our 31st year of AWANA here at Zion beginning with our staff being dedicated for the club year alongside of our Sunday School staff on September 8th at the 10:30 worship service. It was a very full day - especially for the AWANA staff that attends Zion. Following the church service, we went to the Ministry Center for the annual church picnic sponsored by the Sunday School staff. What a great time that included yummy food, musical entertainment for the adults and fun games for the kids. (Thank you to the AWANA staff that did double duty by helping with the picnic, entertainment or games!!!) The amazing turnout once again is a testimony of the awesome support that the youth ministries are given by the Congregation! Thank you, Zion Church!!! The AWANA Staff had a little bit of a break between the picnic/activities before they had to return at 3:00 for staff prayer time and Kick-Off at 3:30. Kick-Off was short and sweet this year as I promised my part of general information that applied to everyone would be quick so as not to cause anyone to go to sleep! Parents were then dismissed to go to a brief meeting with their clubber(s) director to pick up entrance booklets/handbooks and parent letters specific to that club and then back out to the Ministry for Root Beer Floats!!! As a staff we had decided at our picnic in August to do something simple (rather than the usual Nachos/Taco Salad Bar) for refreshments with it being such a full day. It certainly was A LOT less stressful of a weekend for me but I do love having the Nachos/ Taco Salad Bar, so we may have to work it in somewhere else during the club year!!! The Sunday School Staff and I decided that although it was a HUGE day, it was definitely a HUGE success!!! We have had one regular club meeting as of this writing where we gained about ten more clubbers woohoo!!! The last Sunday in September, we will have an Open House for parents - and anyone else that would like to attend - to see what a normal night is like for the clubbers. I am looking forward to another fantastic club year of seeing what God will do... as HE IS IN CONTROL!!! Cheryl Rose, Commander

4 NEWS FROM ZION 100TH ANNIVERSARY UPDATE: In November of 2011, an organizational meeting for Zion s 100 th Anniversary was held. Direct descendants of charter members started the committee. As time has gone on, more people have come on board. The date was set for March 22nd- 23rd and as it turned out, fell exactly 100 years to the day of our charter... March 23, Research has been ongoing of the past 25 years; 1990 to the present to be put in a volume 4 booklet. Plans are being made to offer a 100 year book depending on demand as well as a 25 year book only. We are investigating putting a book electronically on our website. Festivities are slated to begin on Saturday, March 22 at 3 p.m. with an Open House for reminiscing, viewing pictures etc. A catered banquet will be held at 5 p.m. in the Ministry Center with evening services to start at 7 p.m. Final details for Sunday s services are still being worked out. Invitations will be mailed to former Pastors, children of former Pastors, area 4C Pastors and reps. We are working on selecting a memento of the occasion and milestone. As stated in the last newsletter, pictures of the past as well as pictures of the previous 25 years would be appreciated. A lot of work has been done and as time draws closer, a lot of work remains to be done. We will be needing and looking for many volunteers to help with this event. This is a brief run-down of the committee activities to date. There will be more information to come. Robert Busch, President Page 4 CIRCLE OF PRAISE: Thirty seven people came to the Big Red Tailgate Party hosted by Harvey and Bonnie Richard and Ed Hessler Friday, September 13. Hot dogs and brats with salads and deserts were enjoyed by all. We had a short meeting after the meal. Various things were discussed with the Cookie Walk being December 14th. Claudette encouraged people who have not signed up for pictures to do so. Bob Busch gave the group an Anniversary update. The group gave a consent to give some money to the committee for whatever is needed. After the meeting, trivia games were played that had to do with Nebraska football and Ed Hessler gave a short talk on 1 Thessalonians 4:16 about the greatest quarterback there will ever be. And his name is Jesus. Our next meeting will be a Spaghetti Supper in October. Look for a sign-up sheet the beginning of October. We closed with the Lord's Prayer. Teri Erdman LADIES GUILD: Our meeting was held Sept 9 th. Bridget did our devotion for the evening. The Secretary and Treasurer s reports were given and correspondence was read. There was no old business. In new business, discussion was held on funeral dinners. It was decided to leave decisions up to group leaders that are in charge of funeral dinners. If we have leftovers, leaders are to see if they can be labeled and saved for coffee times. In other business, we were reminded to give Jane all receipts for Ladies Guild items that are purchased. Also, we will look into seeing if we can get cookies sheets to sell. We decided to do something for the 100 th Anniversary such as a bake sale of some kind with German food. We talked of making noodles and butterballs in February and Coffeecakes and Angel Food Cakes closer to the date. We will discuss it further at our next meetings. Hostess for the evening were Nonie and Sandy. Our next meeting will be Monday, October 7 th and all women of the church are invited. Teri Erdman, Secretary

Sunday, Sept. 8th, we dedicated our Sunday School teachers, gave our 9 third graders their Bibles, followed by our all church picnic sponsored by Sunday school. This was the greatest attendance we have ever had! What a time of fellowship, good food and games for the kids. There was gospel singing by the Harris Family and Andy Stobel of Shoutin Time". Kamilah Rupp played her saxophone with a tribute to America, and Bob Schmer played his accordion. Thank you to everyone who helped in any way to make this day so special. It was so much fun to share it with Awana. Sunday School and Awana are two great ways to minister to our children. As I stood back and watched the smiles on peoples faces, watching them sing along, I realized again how blessed we are to have our Zion family of believers. As I looked out into the crowd of people, I thanked God for the mentors who pray for us, for they, too, taught Sunday School or helped with Awana. How blessed we are! Here is a list of our Sunday School Staff and teachers: Superintendent: Sharon Stricker Assistant: Robin Schadwinkel Treasurer: Deb Pieper Pre-school-pre-K: Ashley Robbins Kindergarten: Mickey Janecek 1st and 2nd grade: Margaret Hancock 3rd and 4th grade: Heidi Robertus 5th and 6th grade: Kathy Trook, Kerri Arnold 7th and 8th grade: Andy Griess High school, College, Young adults: Rich Riddick Adult: Barb Kautz Women s Bible Study: Bridget Schick Take Twenty: Dewey Nursing Homes: Vern Fegler Substitute teachers: Loretta Roth, Malissa Meyer, and Brian Rupp Thank you to all who prayed for a 5th and 6th grade teacher. At the picnic, Kathy Trook and her daughter Kerri Arnold told me how they had been praying and felt so led by God to teach this class. Praise the Lord for answered prayers! Please keep our young people on your prayer list each week and the teachers who mentor them. God Bless, Sharon, Robin, Deb
