F r o m t h e p a s t o r s d e s k... At the beginning of the summer, we embarked on a study of the introductory chapters of Proverbs which I intended to last throughout the summer months possible spilling over into September. Finally, on the last Sunday of October, we reached the end of our summer study. (I guess I figured - why should the reconstruc#on project in the Ministry Center be the only thing that takes us longer that an#cipated?) I did not hurry through Proverbs because even though its focus is primarily P l e a s e T a k e n o t e... Or call toward young people, I have been overwhelmed with comments from adults who have told me how much they are learning from and enjoying our study of Proverbs. The final chapter we looked at (chapter 9) brought everything we learned together perfectly by personifying both Wisdom and Foolishness as women who each make promises of good things they can provide to young people who choose to follow them. Everyone looks for good things like wealth, honor, enjoyment, safety, peace, and friendship. Both Wisdom and Foolishness promise to provide these things, but they encourage us to pursue them in very different ways. Wisdom says because God designed life and only He knows what's best, you must trust Him enough to follow His commands to find the life He wants to provide. Foolishness tells us we are smart enough to know what's best and encourages us to follow our hearts which will lead us to the good things we want in life. The way of Wisdom in most cases requires doing what's difficult now (delaying gra#fica- #on, hard work, choosing honesty over decep#on) with the confidence that in the long run, faith in God's goodness will pay off. Foolishness tells us we can have all the good things we want now (without delaying gra#fica#on, without hard work, without hard choices) because there are always shortcuts we can take if we are willing to ignore the commands of God. Both promise the same good things, but Wisdom promises they come eventually through trus#ng the Lord, hard work and discipline and Foolishness promises they can come immediately without listening to the LORD, doing hard work, or making difficult choices. If we take what both Wisdom and Fool- DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME ENDING, Saturday, November 5th! TURN YOUR CLOCKS BACK 1 HOUR BEFORE YOU GO TO BED! 2 Page 2 (Continued from page 1) ishness say at face value, the choice seems easy. If we can have the good things of life later a7er taking the hard, disciplined way, or we can have the same good things immediately by taking the easy, fun way, why would anyone take the hard way? The reason Proverbs gives for not taking the easy way is that you cannot take what Foolishness says at face value because she has no interest in the truth. Her promises are false, and trus#ng her leads not to life but to hardship and death. Wisdom, on the other hand, because she is #ed to the character of God always tells the truth. The truth is God wants you to have enjoyable friendships, financial freedom, a happy and healthy marriage, the respect of others, and safety. These and other good things are promised to those who fear Him enough to trust that his commands are what's best and simply walk in obedience to them day by day, year by year, genera#on by genera#on. My hope is that our study of Proverbs has given us as a church such confidence in God's plan for our lives that we are commi8ed to walk together in the wisdom God provides in his Word and to encourage each other as we do so. As we look to November, we'll be beginning a new study of Luke. Because of its length, I an#cipate this study will take at least a year. It has been some #me since I've studied or taught one of the gospels, so I'm filled with both excitement and nervousness. Please pray that this study gives us all a clearer understanding of our Savior and that it inspires us to be even more devoted to Him. Before we begin our study of Luke, we will have Missions Sunday on November 13. We have invited a missionary couple (Ryen and Laura House) to share their vision for their ministry to unreached people groups in Mexico. Ryen and Laura both grew up here in the Sco8sbluff/Gering valley and have completed training through New Tribes Mission. They are currently raising support in hopes of being ready to head to the mission field next summer. I'm excited to give our church the opportunity to be part of the team suppor#ng and sending them out to do the work God called them to do in reaching unreached people with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Please make plans to join us on November 13, so you can hear their vision for ministry in Mexico and prayerfully consider being part of their financial support team. We are excited in our Sunday School Dept.! We have teamed up with Awana and our church family by sending out stickers with our Sunday School and Awana times. These stickers can be put on candy bars as you hand them out for Halloween. We are hoping to get kids that might not have a church home or Awana program, to come to ours where the message and hope of Jesus is shared. We are having a big surprise for the Sunday School kids on Oct. 30 th! We ordered fall bags that have the message of Jesus on them, filling them with candy; each child getting a flash light that says, "Shine for Jesus", and a gospel track that clearly shows them how to put their faith in Jesus Christ, if they haven't already. How important this is. We, as adults, can see the turmoil in our nation so we must show our kids that God truly is the one in control, and will reign forever and ever. We will be doing a fun project with the kids for Thanksgiving. Stay tuned for the Christmas program; we have had a great response to kids wanting to be in the program and that blesses our hearts. Feel free to visit your child s classroom on Sunday morning. God Bless, Sharon, Robin, Malissa Page 3 MISSIONS: MISSION S SUNDAY... Things are progressing smoothly with our Youth programs. The kids are learning so much and (as an added bonus) so am I! On Thursday nights we are studying how the beginning of the universe points to God as the only possible cause. It is amazing to see how true science only confirms God's word! On Wednesday nights, the High School Bible study is into the book of 1st Samuel. We are learning how God is the Rock. We can either shelter in Him or, if we choose to oppose Him, encounter his righteous justice! The characters in this book are colorful and dynamic, while still being people to whom we can all relate and learn from. Colorful characters also abound in the book of Judges, which the Middle Schoolers and I are studying in Sunday School. This part of Israel's history reads almost like a comic book. Like any good comic book, Judges points to how we all need a hero. Human heroes (although they are used by God to do great things) can never fix the big problem in every human heart. The power to do that lies with the greatest Hero of all: Jesus. Lastly, we have Awana. We have been learning about the attributes of God. I am amazed at the depth of understanding exhibited by the T&T group of clubbers. It is a joy to remind them of God's love, justice, creativity, and eternality (just to name a few). I am so thankful for your prayers and I hope you will remember these age groups when you talk with our Father. Please pray that they will grow up to be men and women who look like Jesus. Please pray also that I would be accurate when I teach and that the truth of God's word would change hearts. Thank you for your love for these kids, and thank you for your prayers for these ministries! Pastor Taylor

6 Page 6 NEWS FROM ZION ~ AWANA NEWS ~ On Sunday, September 25 th we held an Open House for our AWANA clubbers parents and anyone else in the congregation that wanted to see what happens each club night at AWANA!!! The Staff does such a great job of making our guests feel welcome and including them in as much or as little as they would like to take part!!! (Parents help little ones with their craft, parents are invited to play the games, etc.) We also ALWAYS have to treat our guests to refreshments and the clubbers, of course, get in on that as well! Each October is Pastor s/pastoral Staff & Spouses Appreciation and as a club that is so blessed by their prayers, support, hard work, etc., we like to have a special celebration honoring them. Last year was the first year that we tried a campfire/singa-long theme for our activity - which everyone seemed to really enjoy so that is what we planned for this year. Parents are also asked to attend so that we have plenty of hands to help with the hot dog roasting, marshmallow roasting, etc. (Not to mention, we want PLENTY of eyes watching the kids so that they don t get too close to the fire pits!!!) I am SO THANKFUL to have Staff that is very capable and willing to step in if something comes up for me... which has never really happened as far as for our actual club meetings. However, in the wee hours of Sunday morning on October 9 th, I received a text from my daughter Sarah saying that my grandson would soon be entering the world and to head down to Lincoln ASAP!!! Needless to say, by club time that afternoon, I was in Lincoln, NE holding my newborn grandson!!! Please meet, Caleb Thomas Geiser, born at 11:13 a.m. on October 9 th. He was 7 lbs., 8 oz. and 20¾ in. long and already has his Grandma and Grandpa Rose wrapped around his little finger!!! Alright, back to Pastor s Appreciation : Thank you, Pastor Andy & Janae and Taylor & Claire for all you do for our AWANA Club!!! Thank you to Chad Meyer for taking charge of the fire pit set up and put out! Thank you, Malissa Meyer for taking care of the food set up and take down, etc. Thank you, Kathy Trook for taking care of presenting the thank you notes and gift cards to Pastor Andy and Taylor. Thank you, Andee Musonda for help with the behind the scenes work to ensure that the evening ran smoothly. On the following Monday evening, October 10 th, I along with three

7 NEWS FROM ZION Page 7 other staff from our club were to join some other area AWANA Staff to attend this year s Ministry Conference The Great Connection at Monument Bible Church from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. As it turned out, only one of our staff was able to attend (no other churches showed up) so it was cancelled. October 16 th was BARF (Bring A Real Friend) night! This is a fun way for the clubbers to pass their friend section in their handbook but more importantly, have their friends hear the Good News of Jesus!!! The purpose of BARF night is also to have visitors turn into regular attending clubbers. I know of at least two that have been returning!!! (Two more children that are hearing the Gospel WOO HOO!!!) Coming up in November, we will be packing shoe boxes with our clubbers for Operation Christmas Child as well as hearing from missionaries, Ryen and Laura House with New Tribes Mission. Of course in November we also celebrate Thanksgiving... we have SO MUCH to be thankful for as children of God!!! We are SO BLESSED!!! Thankful that... GOD IS IN CONTROL!!! (And for a beautiful newborn grandson!!! ) Cheryl Rose, Commander Thank you, Janae Griess for many of our AWANA pics as well as Mickie Janecek and Andee Musonda for posting pics on Facebook of their sensory activities in Puggles and Cubbies!!! I HAD to include this pic of Art DeVos photobombing the Powell family pic... One of the BEST photobombs I ve seen and I have to restrain myself from snort laughing every time I see it!!!
