3 President s Report Here is some of the church business that we as your new council discussed at our meeting. Our church program of special music will continue until about Sept. 21st, when the choir will resume again. Beginning Saturday, October 11th at 9:00am - 10:00am, our Men's Bible Study will take a break for 4 weeks. Marv Frye will be doing his presentation called "My Reasons." Everyone is welcome to attend, this is something you don't want to miss. We had 12 people become new members in July, glory to God. North Bay on the Bay will be held at church and renamed the Annual Church Picnic. The date is Aug 17th. Mel Knittel will be making his worldfamous burgers, onions, and hot dogs. We will be posting a food sign-up sheet in the Narthex. There will be some tables and chairs set up outside by Mel for those of you who would like to eat outside. Our leadership committee (Pastor Brian and myself) asked Patty Worth- Dunlap to consider filling the council position vacated by Heidi Bjorgen, and she graciously accepted. The council voted unanimously to approve her. Welcome, Patty, you will be an asset to the council. Thank you! Our Council Retreat date will be October 11th from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. In October we will be updating the mailboxes and the directory. Not bad for our first meeting. I thank all on the council for your contributions. Romans 10:9 Outreach Committee Report on Fernando Zentano Aramayo The outreach ministry team is introducing a new member of our church family, Fernando J. Zenteno Aramayo. We are sponsoring Fernando through World Vision. Fernando lives in Fortaleza, Bolivia with his father, a construction worker who struggles to support his family. Fernando will be five on October 29. He is not yet in school. He likes to play, and help at home. Our continuing contribution provides basic ongoing medical care, improved nutrition and hygiene for Fernando. Combined with other World Vision sponsors, our contribution assists his community with new classrooms, school supplies and clean water. Please pray for Fernando, his family, and community. 4 Outreach Committee Report from the Balstad Family Dear Family and Friends, We are thankful to be back in Betroka after we spent 2 weeks in the capital, Antananarivo aka Tana. The travel to and from Tana was definitely an adventure with 22 hrs in a taxi-bus, driving through the night, and then 26 hrs (on the bus) to get home, with a stop to sleep in a hotel for a few hours. During our time in Tana we were able to play tourist a bit and enjoy things we are not able to get in Betroka (like pizza and hot running water). We also had the opportunity to join with other missionaries around the island for an educational conference for our kids. The kids did some school testing to make sure they are on track, some fun activates (like putting on a puppet show), and just playing with other MKs (Missionary Kids). The parents went to different sessions on life with MKs. There are pictures and more information about what we did in Tana on our blog. Now that we are back in Betroka we are getting back to work. As we have said before, language learning is our top priority. Jason has been able to get 2 language helpers and Kristi now has a language helper that she meets with 3 times a week. Sara and JJ learn language best when playing with other kids so we try to make sure they are with local kids as much as possible. We realized David can speak better in Malagasy than in English guess that means we need to work on English more with him. We still have a long way to go with our language, but we can tell the hard work we put in makes a difference. Language learning, we have learned, is a ministry itself. You are with someone several hours a week building a relationship while you learn language. Then you are using your new language many hours a week out in the community, which also builds relationships. Without relationships you can t do other ministry work. We are excited to be able to communicate better but also to build relationships with local Bara people. We also wait for the arrival of our new guard s family. Our new guard, Armond, has been with us for a little over a month but his family (total of 8 people) will join him in a few weeks. Armond has been helping the local Lutheran Church by going out to nearby villages, mostly Bara, to evangelize, and will continue to do so during the day. He is also a farmer and very interested in learning from Jason about Farming God s Way. We are hoping that when Jason has more language, Armond will take him to meet other Bara men and see the process by which the Lutheran church evangelizes. We pray this family is a good fit for us and vice versa, and we are looking forward to having more kids around the house to play with. Even through all their transitions they are doing well academically! We are refreshed and ready to dive back into language learning. Kristi has a language helper. Prayer Requests: For more opportunities to practice language in our neighborhood. For a smooth transition with the new family moving in. Time management so we can do the things we need to do each day and still have time, and energy, for family time.

5 Servant Hands It takes the hands of many people to do the work of NBLCC. We are a community of Believers each of us a servant with special talents and gifts to share. The focus will be on providing support during Sunday Worship Service. The congregation has been organized into three teams to serve as greeters, ushers, communion assistants, readers, and coffee hosts each week. Each team will be on call for one month out of three to learn more, contact the office for a Servant Hands guide. Greeters welcome members and guests to the church before Worship. Ushers assist before and during the service handing out bulletins, passing the offering plates, directing each pew to receive communion, etc. Communion assistants offer communion to members and guests. Readers read the prayers and scripture readings from the bulletin before the congregation. Coffee hosts provide refreshments during Fellowship hour (these refreshments don t have to be fancy, just something for people to nibble on as they chat). There are other ways to serve during Worship, as well, such as: Counters who tally the offerings received during Worship. Sacristans who prepare communion bread and wine, change the banners, etc. For more info, contact Deanna Smith, August: Team 3 is Serving This next month, worship assistant positions are being filled by Servant Hands Team 3. Call or office@northbaylutheran.org Neighborhood Bible Study The Neighborhood is taking a summer break. Sue Nichols leads this group but you can contact Kim Olsen for more info at Choir Practice Choir is on break for the summer. When the choir resumes in the fall, we invite singers and those who wish to join us to come to choir practice. Practice is held Sundays at 9:00 a.m. Welcome Team Our Welcome Team prepares and delivers cookies to new folks visiting our church. It s a nice way to welcome them and let them know a little bit about NBLCC. If you are interested in baking or delivering cookies, we welcome your assistance. Also a BIG thank you to our current cookie bakers! You are much appreciated. For more info, contact the office at Sound Board Volunteers Needed Hearing Assistance During Worship Thank you Sacristans! Volunteers are needed to help run the sound board during worship service. It s a simple process of adjusting sound volumes and muting microphones when not in use, or uploading the sermon to our web site. See Mel or Eric for more info. Our sound system has been updated and now includes personal hearing assistance devices. If you find it difficult to hear the service and would like to try one of our devices, they are available at the sound board near the back of the sanctuary. Thank you for the work you do baking and donating Communion bread every week, setting up the Communion trays for Sunday service, and changing the sanctuary banners. Sign up to bring a dish to share (signup sheet in the Narthex) Join the NBLCC Women s Group The Women's group heartily invites all of the women of North Bay Lutheran to join our group, organized for fun, fellowship, service, and sisterhood in Christ. The group meets the third Monday of each month at 10 a.m. in the fellowship room at the church. The group is on break for the summer, so there will be no July or August meeting. Dedicate flowers for Sunday worship The sign up chart for flower dedications is in the narthex. If the flowers are presented in honor of or tribute to someone special, or to celebrate a special event, please make a note when you sign up.
