During February, our study of Romans took us to one of the most inspira-onal chapters of the Bible. As we made our way through chapter 8, we saw that the Spirit of God who lives in us wants to see clearly that the hope of the Chris-an life is not anything that happens in this world but rather the fact there's an eternal inheritance wai-ng beyond this life. It dealt quite truthfully with the fact that because in this life we live in a fallen world with mortal bodies, it is inescapable that in this world there will be suffering. However, God assures us that when our inheritance comes, the sufferings of this mortal life are not worthy to be compared to the glory that will be revealed in us when Jesus returns for us and we are glorified. While we eagerly wait for our inheritance, we are assured of two monumental truths. First, in everything that comes into our lives, God is at work to bring about his purpose of making us more like Jesus. Second, no ma<er what comes our way, nothing in all crea-on can possibly separate us from the love of God that has come to us through Christ Jesus our Lord. With these encouragements firm in our minds, we ought to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus un-l he comes back for us and at the same -me be aware of every opportunity to share with those who do not know him. 27-Don Osman/LEAD Global 7 a.m a.m. PRE-ORDERS and HELP welcome. Sign up at the Welcome Center! Or call From the most inspira-onal of chapters, we moved right into one of the most complicated chapters when we got to Romans 9. As Paul wrote Romans, it appears something has gone terribly wrong with the plan of God for the na-on of Israel. The en- -re Old Testament tells the story of God crea-ng the na-on of Israel as his chosen people and promising to send a savior to the world through that na-on. When God sent Jesus, the Messiah, Israel rejected and killed him. The ques-on arises: has something gone wrong in the plan of God as it relates to Israel? Chapters 9-11 are Paul's response to this ques-on. He's going to argue that God's purpose in choosing Israel is con-nuing to go forward exactly as planned, that Israel's rejec-on of the Messiah was part of the plan, and that God con-nues to have plans for the na-on of Israel even though currently they are separated from him. The argument Paul uses gets quite complicated at -mes, but the big idea is hard to miss: God's purpose and plan never fails. Every promise he makes is sure because he's in complete control and his plans are moving along right on schedule. In March, we will hope to get through chapter 11 before taking a break from Romans for Palm Sunday and Easter. We have five confirma-on students prepared to be confirmed on Palm Sunday. We will then celebrate the death and resurrec-on of Jesus with a variety of services during Easter Daylight Savings time begins 2 am on Mar 13th (Continued on page 2) MONTHLY CARRY-IN Sunday, March 6th following the 10:30 service. Bring a dish to share and join the fellowship!
2 Page 2 (Continued from page 1) week. The choir will get us started with the performance of a cantata called "Champion of Love" on Thursday evening. On Good Friday, we will focus specifically on the death of Jesus for our sins during our Tenebrae service. Then we celebrate the awesome truth of the resurrec-on with two services on Easter Sunday. There will be communion served at each of these services. Please check the calendar for -mes and dates. Our hope is that during this Easter season, remembering and giving thanks for the death and resurrec-on of Jesus will move all of our hearts toward greater confidence in and deeper love for our Savior. 5 MISSIONS: Dear friends at Zion, Alice and I want to express our thanks to you for your most generous contribution just received. What a blessing! Even though we have not had too many opportunities to meet with you often, we are very grateful for your continued prayer and financial support for these past decades. You have been true partners with us in the ministries God has entrusted to us. We thank God and count it a great privilege to be able to serve Him as we minister to Chinese congregations here in California. Every weekend we make our 200+ miles roundtrip to the Bay area to preach and teach, disciple and encourage believers in more than a half a dozen Chinese congregations. Your prayers and monthly gifts help make this possible. So, thanks again, for partnering with us. Warmly in Christ, Hans and Alice Wilhelm YOUTH As we move into March, our confirmation students have completed all of their lessons and are now ready to begin preparations for their confirmation on Palm Sunday. It's been a good year, and these kids have learned a lot. I'm excited for them to have the chance to showcase what they've learned next month as they are confirmed. Also, on March 7 at 6pm, three of our students are planning to proclaim and celebrate their faith by being baptized at a special service at Valley Bible Church. Everyone is invited and encouraged to celebrate together this exciting step in the lives of these students. Our group of high school students who meets for prayer and fellowship on Sunday evenings is currently on a break. Our church participates in a series of Lenten services on Sunday evenings in the weeks leading up to Easter. Because of my participation in these services, we have been unable to meet together with our students on Sunday evenings. The plan is to get back to these gettogethers in April after Easter. Page 5 On the first Wednesday in March, we have special plans for our youth group meeting to have a potential youth pastor candidate spend the evening with our kids and teach the high school Bible study. The hope is that this evening will give us a good idea about whether he may be a good fit for this position. I know many of you have been praying for this particular need of our church. Please be praying especially during this time that we would get a clear indication from God concerning how we should proceed. Pastor Andy ~ AWANA NEWS ~ As of this newsletter article, we only have 7 regular club nights left (YIKES!!!). Our awards ceremony, JAMBOREE, will be held on Sunday, May 1 st. February 7 th, was Sports Day where we wear our favorite sports gear, i.e., t-shirts, caps, other props! Broncos was the team of choice for the winner of the Super Bowl so I m sure there were a lot of happy homes later that day when the play clock ran out!!! J I enjoyed interviewing Student leaders, Jacob Pieper and Spencer Riddick who were our special guests for the evening such great young men!!! (It seems like no matter how good I know our student leaders, there is usually always something that comes out of the interview that surprises me!) I will miss them next year when they head to college!!! (Continued on page 6)
6 Page 6 (Continued from page 5) The only other special event we have left for February is Grandparent s Night on the 28 th. I will report on that in next month s article! Coming up in March... we have March Madness but because of the way that Palm Sunday and Easter fall this year, we will only have the first two Sundays in March for the Madness J and then we will have the last two Sundays in March off for the Palm Sunday and Easter holidays. Last month I had an urgent prayer request for Tom Hofmann (who along with his wife, Sandi, are the former AWANA Event Coordinators for the Nebraska Panhandle and Eastern Wyoming). PLEASE continue to JOIN our AWANA family in praying for Tom!!! (And, Sandi as well, who is walking through this cancer journey with him!) For those of you that don t know, Tom had been diagnosed with advanced kidney cancer in January and the doctors have given him six months to a year. Since that time, they have been at a treatment center in Tampa running tests and discussing with specialists options for Tom. Last I knew, Tom was to begin radiation on Sunday, February 21 st. I apologize, but I am going to repeat what I said last month... I know that I say it often and I don t EVER want it to come off as just a flippant response but I am SO THANKFUL THAT GOD IS IN CONTROL!!! We serve a GREAT AND MIGHTY GOD that is STILL IN THE BUSINESS OF MIRA- CLES!!! And, in the NAME OF JESUS, we will be declaring a Miracle for Tom in the Month of March!!! Cheryl Rose, AWANA Commander EASTER S MEANING! In a 2010 Barna Group survey, two-thirds of Americans knew that Easter is a religious holiday. But only 42 percent connected its meaning to Jesus resurrection. And only two percent of adults said they would describe Easter as the most important holiday of their faith Not everyone who connects Easter to religion has the facts straight. Two percent of Americans said Easter is about Jesus birth. Another two percent said it s about Jesus rebirth. And one percent said it s a celebration of his second coming. Another three percent described Easter as a celebration of spring or a pagan holiday. In the same survey, 31 percent of active churchgoers said they d definitely invite an unchurched friend to worship with them on Easter weekend. This Easter, share the truth and joy of the holiday with someone who doesn t know Jesus. News of the resurrection is too good to keep to ourselves! Sunday School could use your help with wrapped candy and plastic eggs for the Easter Egg Hunt! Thank you ahead of time!
