From the Manse... By the time you read this, we will be well through the season of Lent, with the events of Holy Week and Easter fast approaching. We will also be well into the planned celebrations for our 150th anniversary year, with events and guest preachers. This Anniversary year is a time for us to celebrate 150 years of congregational worship in our Chapelwell Street building. 150 years which have seen many changes. As members of Kirkgate today, we bring our own little bit of history with us into our building perhaps we have always worshipped in this particular place; perhaps it is the place we came to following one of the many unions that make up the Kirkgate congregation; perhaps it is the church we chose when we moved to the area? Whatever your history with this particular place of worship, as a member of Kirkgate, you are one of its living, breathing stones. You help give it life and energy. You are part of the past, present and future of this building. During 2016, we will explore our history. We will celebrate the ongoing life of our congregation and we will look to the future together. As well as all the special events and services and guests, one of the main events for this Anniversary year is our Church Gathering on 14th May. The Gathering is the focal point of the Financial Stewardship Campaign that we are running in 2016, and I urge you (if you can) to come along on the 14th May. At The Gathering, you will find out more about the work of the Church, both nationally and locally in our own congregation. You will discover where your money goes and how it is spent. Invitations to The Gathering will come out with the April magazine, so look out for yours. As you continue your journey through Lent, the season of thoughtful reflection and heartfelt praise to God for the great gift of his Son, think about how you can use your God-given gifts in the service of God and his Church. And as you reflect, prayerfully consider if it would be possible for you to increase your financial contribution to Kirkgate Church. Remember that you are one of its living stones. It has no future without you. Blessings Dorothy 2

Prayer Diary Contributed by Alison Buick Lord, forgive our silence, forgive our reluctance to speak up for others Forgive our reliance on goods which have been produced unfairly at the expense of the poor. Forgive our lack of awareness of how our clothes are manufactured, Our food produced and our mistaking unneeded goods for essentials. Lord, enter the silence of our hearts and lift them up with fresh understanding Derived from the wisdom contained in your Word. May we be ambassadors for Christ in bringing reconciliation between producer and consumer, those exploited and those who benefit from their exploitation. May all our labour be valued and rewarded justly. May our lifestyles reflect a care for creation and humanity. May we appreciate the gift of life and in so doing respect the lives of all God s children. Lord, you reconciled the world to God through your suffering on the cross. May your reconciling power make us one with all who need fairness in their trading and systems which promote justice. AMEN Almighty God, help us to find our true identity in your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. May his spirit fill us inspire us to bring peace, justice, mercy, kindness and love to all our encounters with others. Help us to take every opportunity to work for the promotion of these values in every area of life. May your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Extracted from World Mission A place to stay, And food each day, I ve everything I need. I like to share. I think its fair, to not give in to greed. A child who s poor, Sleeps on the floor, Eats only once a day. Has no school, No hope at all. I don t want things this way. Their family grows food for me. And should be fairly paid. So everywhere let s make life fair! Now let s start with Fairtrade! Poem written by Robin Graham 4

Challenge to the Church This summer, Kirkgate is participating in the National Stewardship Programme which was launched by the General Assembly in A Congregational Gathering and Exhibition, at the heart of our giving programme, will take place on Saturday 14th May at 2pm. The Gathering be an opportunity for all of us to hear about the wonderful work that is done because we give money to God for the work of his Church. Good things that happen here, good things that happen throughout Scotland, good things that happen in other parts of the world all because members of this congregation and other congregations of the Church of Scotland give money to enable the sharing of the gospel. Our giving really does make a difference by enriching individual lives and the lives of communities. The exhibition will look back at the past lives and work of the various congregations that now make up Kirkgate, and we will look at what we are doing now both here in Kirkgate and the wider church. We will also look to the future and how we can achieve our goals. All of our church organisations have also been asked to create a small display for the exhibition about the work they do either within the church or the wider community. At the Gathering there will be plenty of time to ask questions and make comments. There will also be time to chat with others over an informal afternoon tea. In next month s magazine there will be an invitation and RSVP to attend the Gathering addressed to you. We would appreciate if you could take a few moments to complete the RSVP card and return it promptly to us. Please make a special effort to come to our Congregational Gathering and hear good news on Saturday 14th May. 7

Letters of Appreciation Many thanks for the flowers I received on January 31st - they were most appreciated. George Armstrong Mrs Katie Wren wishes to say thanks for the flowers, cards, phone calls and visits after her recent accident. Mrs Sylvia Mcainsh sends her thanks for the lovely flowers delivered recently by Alison. What a lovely surprise and welcome to Kirkgate Church. My heartfelt thanks to all at Kirkgate, not just for the beautiful flowers which brightened up our home, but also for the visits, telephone calls, prayers, cards and messages following my recent short stay in hospital. Your thoughtfulness is much aappreciated. Morag Forsyth Pastoral Care in Kirkgate Kirkgate is blessed to have a hard working Pastoral Care Committee that keeps in touch with people, arranging visits for those who are sick and housebound. They also keep me (as your minister) informed about people who need a visit at home or in hospital. The Pastoral Care Team is one of the ways in which we as a congregation strive to carry one another s burdens, but we rely on you to keep us updated about your friends and neighbours from the congregation who need support or a visit. This is especially important when it comes to hospital visiting, as visiting clergy no longer have access to in-patient lists at local hospitals. This means that the Minister and Pastoral Visitors only find out someone is in hospital when a relative, friend or neighbour lets us know. So if you know of someone in the congregation who is in need of a visit at home or in hospital, or if you would like a visit yourself, you can contact Miss Alison Buick ( ) or Mrs Morag Forsyth ( ) and visits will be organised. Be assured you can always get in touch with me directly. Even if you have to leave a message, I will call you back as soon as I can or you can send me an at: DGranger@churchofscotland.org.uk. The Pastoral Care Committee are always ready to widen the scope of their home visiting. So if you would like to opt in for home visits, please do get in touch with me. If you are able to join our team of visitors, I would also be happy to hear from you. You just need to be someone with a listening ear, who can extend the hand of support and friendship to another member of our congregation. Help carry one another s burdens, and in this way you will obey the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2) Rev Dorothy Granger ( ) 8

The Guild Unfortunately we were sorry to cancel Elizabeth Howie s slide show due to the dangerous weather conditions forecast for that night. However I am sure that Elizabeth will agree to entertain us on another occasion. The following week on Monday 8th February Dr Morag Thow came from Lochwinnoch complete with a box of bones for us to examine and to enlighten us on how to prevent osteoporosis. We finished the evening with a quick simple workout to get the heart rate pumping and we truly needed that cup of tea afterwards!! Next we heard all about the Great Wall of China and how Mr Billy Herd trekked on many days to raise money for Clic Sargent s house at Prestwick where families can get some respite from tending their serious ill children. Rev Christian Vermeulen led us in a Bible Study following the Guild them of Go in Peace and gave us an alternative view on various related passages. A most informative power point show on Legal Matters was given by Associate Lawyer Cecelia Timmons accompanied by Jessica McKee - it doesn t seem that long ago since we remember Jessica as one of our Sunday School children and now the tables are turned as she helps Cecelia tell us how to make out our wills and arrange other personal legal matters. We thank Chrissie and Morag for representing us at the World Day of Prayer held in the Baptist Church this year. How quickly the Monday nights pass, but we still have another interesting meeting on 7th March about the Panopticon and we end the session with our ABM on 14th March. Please see below the change of time to 7.00 p.m. for a Committee Meeting on 7th and also 7.00 p.m.on the 14th for the ABM - this is to accommodate a short time of entertainment afterwards performed by some of Ardrossan Academy pupils and this will be followed by our closing supper. The Ardrossan Presbyterial Council are holding their spring meeting here in Kirkgate onmonday 18th April at 2.00 p.m. this is the Annual Business Meeting and the speaker will be Carol Findlay. Ladies we require your help on that day to help serve tea. If you have any suggestions for interesting speakers or topics we would love to hear from you and we will try our best to incorporate them into next year s syllabus which we start to plan in April. 10 Property Report - Kirk Session, February 2016 FRIDAY, MARCH The church and surrounding grounds will be closed to all on the above date. A hoist will be on site to allow surveyors access to inspect the steeple. A traffic management system will also be in place to allow safe working for all involved. SEAFIELD MANSE It is essential that our manse is always in a very presentable condition and to that end one room or area is redecorated every y ear. This year the hall and stairway will be redecorated and that work will commence within a couple of months. 1 MONTGOMERIE CRESCENT The Lawyer has predicted that it will be the end of February or so before paperwork/financial arrangements are in place to finalise the sale. Yes, it would have been nice to report that we had reached that stage and No.1 Montgomerie Crescent was no longer our responsibility not so, but hopefully we will receive confirmation within the next few weeks. The property will require a further visit from Roofguard but I am trying to hold off as long as possible before calling them out and to give the weather a chance to blow itself out. THE COTTAGE The Cottage has been on the market now for several weeks and we have had viewers. As with No. 1 Montgomerie Crescent, it would be good to have the property off our hands. CHURCH/HALLS Radiator leak The radiator leak in the balcony has been repaired and the carpet is drying out. Not a simple repair but required the system to be drained, new pipework installed and the system replenished. In a way it was a blessing as the leaking radiator did highlight a problem that we were unaware of in the tower. A water turn-off valve is situated in the tower roof space and when the engineer went up to turn the water off, he discovered that we had a serious leak in the roof space. Unfortunately it appeared to have been leaking for some time. Roofguard were called and the problem pinpointed. The valley gutter at the bottom of the tower was blocked and the roof flashing had lifted. This was cleared and the flashing repaired. What is unknown at the moment is the condition of the timbers that area will be checked out in in the near future. In addition, the high winds had lifted the flashing at the top Apex of the church roof and this was also replaced at the same time. Mima McSwan South Beach House South Beach House has been very busy, all our beds are filled at present and we have a waiting list. Our new activity co-ordinator has started and everyone is enjoying the 10 Contributed by Margaret Cassidy activities on offer and some of the residents have been out in the mini bus even though it has been very cold. The Friends Group are holding a Daffodil Tea on Friday 18th March from 2.00 p.m p.m. Tickets cost 2 and are available from Margaret. Donations for sale are always welcome. We have a couple of Care Relief Post vacancies needing filled. If interested in working a few hours a week you can go on the web site and find the form to complete. We are waiting for the better weather and hopefully we will have more structured regular outings to look forward to.

A Safe Church Annually, every church has a duty to carry out a Fire Risk and General Assessment of their buildings. While we may consider our building to be low risk - it will only remain low risk and safe if we all play our part. It is the simple and little things that have the potential to create problems for members and users of our facilities alike. Please give thought to the following : a) Chairs should only be stacked like for like and to a maximum of 5 high. b) Please do not place them in front of a Fire Exit. c) Take time to read the Fire Action Notices placed throughout the building and become familiar with the location of the Fire Exit doors. d) Tables should be stacked in the cupboard if not in use or on the trolley in the small hall. e) As far as possible passageways should be clear of obstacles. Please do not leave clutter behind you either bin it or stack it away correctly. f) If you spill liquid on a floor, alert other people to the spill, and place the warning notice (sitting in the hall vestibule) on top of the spill until it can be attended to. g) When using electrical equipment with long running cables, ensure that the cables are placed in such a way that people will not trip over them. h) Always ensure that someone is on duty at the entrance doors and that you know who is coming into and leaving the building. i) Kitchen: It is essential that anyone working or preparing food should wash their hands first. Do not leave anything on the work surfaces they should be clear/ clean at all times and available for preparing food. Care must be taken when working with the plumbed in & free standing urns. That same level of care applies to the fan oven and hot plates Children should not be in the kitchen unless under adult supervision. Congratulations We congratulate Sandra Craig who recently qualified for the Scottish Dominoes Singles Championship Finals which were held on Sunday 28 th February in Airdrie. 12 World Mission This is now Fairtrade Fortnight (29February 13 March) and in this edition of WM we are asked to think about the importance of continuing to show our support for farmers and workers across the world. Some people are holding big Fairtrade Breakfasts. Martin Luther King once said before you finish eating breakfast in the morning, you ve depended on more than half the world. The top 5 breakfast items for WM being tea, coffee, porridge, banana and toast. Two Fairtrade producers are coming to Scotland this fortnight and they will speak about the challenges their communities face and the difference Fairtrade has made. Fatima Ismael is an agronomist engineer from Nicaragua and Tania Jiminez works for the organisation APECAP in Palanda in the Amazon region of Ecuador. We are asked to stand up for farmers in Israel and Palestine and think about trying breakfast foods from these countries this fortnight. A typical fairtrade breakfast there would include organic dates, olive oil and za atar which is a blend of thyme and sesame seed with a pinch of somac, sea salt and olive oil. Fair trade za tar comes from an organisation in Sindyanna, a region of Galilee. The following is a Fairtrade breakfast recipe BANANA PANCAKES WITH CHOCOLATE Ingredients 110g plain flour : 200ml milk : 2 eggs ; 2 Fairtrade bananas, thinly sliced 4tbsp of traidcraft Chocolate hazelnut spread Method Step 1 Mix eggs, flour and milk together to make a creamy batter. Step 2 melt a little butter in a frying pan and throw in the sliced bananas. Pour in enough batter to coat the bottom of the frying pan, let it cook for a minute or so then drizzle over the chocolate spread. Alison Buick Extract from February/March 2016 WM 12
