From our Locum Minister, Rev Mandy Hickman The nights are fair drawing in, as we head into October and autumn is upon us. This is my favourite time of year and season as the beauty of God s created world stuns us with its glorious rich and warming colours! Rev. Mandy Hickman, Tel: mhickman@churchofscotland.org.uk We might be turning the heating back on, lighting the fire at night as the temperature drops, starting to look out those winter coats, gloves and scarfs, certainly our wellies have not been away much of this summer! But as the nights darken and the air gets a bit cooler we are comforted and warmed by God s love for us and in Jesus who came to be a light in the darkness. We are reassured in the Holy Spirit who guides us on our faith journey and is ever present around us whatever season we are in. So, this autumn let s give thanks to God for all that has been grown, created and achieved so far this year and rejoice in the colours and the fruitfulness of these moments. Every blessing Mandy Dear Ardrossan & Saltcoats Kirkgate Parish Church, I am delighted to say that we have received your wonderful knitted donations. We look forward to delivering the knitted items, as they will undoubtedly make a big difference to those in need. Thank you for your support, we truly appreciate it. Your donations have a great impact on the communities where they are sent, not only do they provide much needed warmth, but the recipients are always so touched by the time and effort that you put into making these items. Thank you once again for your support. We couldn t do our work without the generosity of knitters like you. Warm wishes from the Knit for Peace Team 2

Prayer Page CHRIST LIVES IN ME God of yesterday I remember all you were to me and to my loved ones with gratitude. How can I forget the faith of generations in the family, in the church through history reaching back to Jesus your expression of faith in us.? Christ lives in me Lord I am not worthy. God of tomorrow let me dream I hope so that I will not fear the passing years. In your mercy lead me through change: love dying to be reborn, faith fading to flower again out of sighs, songs rising, through your spirit may winter give way to spring. Christ lives in me Lord I am not worthy God of today guide me through the maze of uncertainty and doubt. Contributed by Alison Buick Sustain me by experience of the past and enthuse me with vision for the future always,by your Spirit having faith in you and in your Son. Christ lives in me Lord I am not worthy Extracted from Prayers by Tony Burnham and Graham Cook Say one for me ENLIGHTENED PERSPECTIVE I ve learned that the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person. I ve learned that being kind is more important than being right. I ve learned.that I can always pray for someone when I am unable to help him in other ways. I ve learned that everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile I ve learned.that a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks. I ve learned.that when your newly born grandchild holds your little finger in their little fist, then you are hooked for life. I ve learned.that when you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere. I ve learned that opportunities are never lost, someone will take the ones you have missed. I ve learned.you should keep words soft and tender because tomorrow you might have to eat them. I ve learned That just one person saying to me, You ve made my day! makes my day. I ve learned That sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to understand. I ve learned That love, not time, heals all wounds. I ve learned That everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you are climbing it. 4

Church Register FUNERAL: In my Father s house are many mansions Mrs Connie Smith, 6 Murray Ave, Saltcoats From the Editor Please note that the next edition of Kirkgate Messenger will be available on Sunday 5th November. It would be appreciated if material could be handed in by Sunday 29th October at the very latest. Please feel free to me at elizabeth.mcmahon@talktalk.net with any interesting news or events so that we can record them in the October edition of The Messenger. A written copy will be fine if you don t use a computer. Prayer Shawl Ministry I became involved in this ministry when I lived in Lancaster, Wisconsin, USA. Called prayer, comfort or peace shawls, they are made for those people who are either ill, in hospital, living alone or housebound because of some disability. Often made with a specific friend or loved one in mind, shawls are also frequently knitted for complete strangers. If you are interested in knitting or crocheting prayer shawls or becoming involved in any other way, please come along to the North Parish Church, Saltcoats on the first Wednesday of the month at 10.00am. The meeting is held in the creche at the back of the church. For more information contact Susan Gill on Please also remember that if you would like a printing job done whether private or church then please do speak to me or Stuart and we will do our best to accommodate your requirements. Life & Work I have the order form for 2018 for Life & Work which has to be completed and returned by November. Should you wish to cancel now is the time to inform me please or if you would like to subscribe to Life & Work. I will be happy to order a copy for you. Elizabeth McMahon, Editor & Life & Work Convenor About the Shawls... In 1998, Janet Severi Bristow and Victoria Galo, two graduates of the 1997 Women's Leadership Institute at The Hartford Seminary in Hartford, Connecticut gave birth to a ministry as a result of their experience in this program of applied Feminist Spirituality under the direction of Professor Miriam Therese Winter, MMS. Whether they are called Prayer Shawls, Comfort Shawls, Peace Shawls, or Mantles, etc., the shawl maker begins with prayers and blessings for the recipient. The intentions are continued throughout the creation of the shawl. Upon completion, a final blessing is offered before the shawl is sent on its way. Some recipients have continued the kindness by making a shawl and passing it onto someone in need. Thus, the blessing ripples from person-to-person, with both the giver and receiver feeling the unconditional embrace of a sheltering, mothering God! (*The shawls can also be crocheted, quilted, woven or machine knitted as well!) 5

Property Report It is always nice to report that we have not required any new trades resource during September. General Outstanding is the shortening of the extraction pipe for the vestry boiler. Engineers to be reminded again. Manse - Roof tile and faulty guttering replaced but repair/replacement to the flashing is still outstanding. Firm have been asked to revisit the Manse and hopefully that repair should be completed this week. Mima McSwan Kirkgate Renovation Project Update October 2017 The project is progressing well with the majority of the new stonework now in place. Even with the scaffolding still surrounding the building, Kirkgate is beginning to look so much lighter in colour and so clean. All the upper leaded windows have now been placed back into their respective openings and the effect of the new glass in the windows has fairly lightened up the sanctuary. You will also see a change in the individual plaster area in which each upper windows sit. The plaster will be removed from the inside of the window area leaving the stonework on show. This will assist with maintenance costs in the future as penetrating damp leads to decaying plaster. The Hogarth window, which sits next to the back pew on the cottage side has also been repaired and placed back into its original position. I visited Rainbow Glass a couple of weeks ago and unfortunately Stuart was unavailable to join me. Some time ago we had indicated to the Project Manager that a visit to Rainbow would be desirable, to view their ideas before cutting and resizing the 5 stained glass windows. The windows as you already know, required to be resized as they were not an exact fit for the openings available at Kirkgate. A considerable amount of time and effort has been spent by Rainbow in ensuring that in their resizing, they retain the maximum amount of the original stained glass of the figures and text. You will see a difference in the 5 stained glass windows but especially in the 3 war memorial windows. I am sure you will be delighted with the result when they are installed at Kirkgate but that will not be for a few weeks yet. The new gutters and downpipes have been fitted. The facia boards that the gutters were attached to were eaten away by woodworm and rot and I think we can be very grateful that they have been replaced. Our Interim Moderator, James McNay and myself met with Stewart Hamilton, our Project Manager to discuss the projected final costs of the project that we were in receipt of. As a result Stewart met with the representative of EBS, our main contractor, to discuss financial issues that were raised by Kirkgate and Stewart. We have been informed that a new draft final account will be issued shortly for us to review. We have applied to Listed Place of Worship, in the hope that we will be able to retrieve our VAT contributions relating to the project. We have received acknowledgement from them but it will be approximately 1 month before we hear anything further, unless they are seeking additional clarification. I have asked our Project Manager to obtain costs for the painting of the wood surrounds of the 2 large lancet windows at the back wall/organ. This was a recommendation by Rainbow as the windows were in reasonable condition and repainting of the wood would help to preserve them. It makes good sense to consider this as the scaffolding is still in place but depends on costs. Mima McSwan & Stuart McMahon 6

Church News It is with deep regret that I announce that I have stood down with immediate effect as Session Clerk of Kirkgate Church for the foreseeable future. As many of you will be aware, Jennifer is seriously ill at present and as such I need to free up some time to cope with the change of routines etc. At the time of writing, what the future holds for us is still uncertain, but that should become clearer in the coming days and weeks. But on behalf of Jennifer, Cara and myself, we are extremely grateful for all the prayers, cards and messages of support we have received. However, I m delighted to announce that Vivien Bruce has agreed to take over my role of joint Session Clerk, to work alongside Mima. It will take a wee while to get everything transitioned over to Vivien, but I m sure she will do a great job. My grateful thanks to her for agreeing to take on this task. There is a new address to contact either Mima or Vivien going forward: sessionclerk@kirkgatechurch.org.uk I ve also given up my role as an Additional Elder in Ardrossan Presbytery, but Kirkgate is still represented by Pamela Martin as our congregational representative and Margaret Cassidy as another Additional Elder. For the time being though, I m happy to continue playing the piano/organ for as long as possible. Colleen Anderson is playing for me on 8 th October in a long-arranged deputisation. I m also continuing as rollkeeper and will try to keep the website updated (though I have to admit, over the summer it has been sadly neglected!) Stuart McMahon Treasurer s Report Balance of General Accounts Balance of Fabric Account Givings through the plate realised over the last six weeks. The average weekly amount being 600. You will all be made most welcome and you can enjoy the fellowship over a cup of tea afterwards. South Beach House 8 Contributed by Margaret Cassidy We have had a busy month what with residents going out for runs and to a couple of functions and people entertaining. Some residents and staff went to West Kilbride Church for a Music Group afternoon and had a really good time and they were made very welcome. Another 8 residents went up to Park Church to the Linked Hands dementia afternoon, we have been to these before and the residents (and staff) always enjoy the singing and then the cakes. The usual entertainers were here along with the West Kilbride Music Al Cords and Stuart Faulds was here to entertain for a birthday party. Our dining room is looking good with our new chairs in place and the front lounge has also had 12 new chairs placed so we are looking bright and cheery. Due to a new deputy being put in place this has meant that there have been a few changes of positions. At this time we are waiting for the Care Inspectorate to visit us for the second time this year. The Friends Group has restarted and Pauline was in attendance - the next meeting on 12th October is the AGM. The Guild starts back in October and I am sure they will have organised a very interesting programme for the session. There is a Harvest Service on Friday 6th October and a table top sale on Friday 20th October which you warmly are invited to attend.
