2 From the Manse... It s February already! Time passes so quickly these days I must be getting old! All that preparation and effort for Christmas and it s over, done, just like that! Everything packed away, until it all begins again in about 43 weeks! I love this time of year though (except for the weather, obviously), the December journey through Advent onto Christmas. Then January and Epiphany, taking us on into Lent. Lent begins very early this year on February 10 th. This has made me very conscious of the movement from the crib to the cross, of God s revealing presence leaving the stable and touching lives, all the way to Calvary s hill. Because Lent is early, Epiphany is short. Epiphany is a season, which tends to get overlooked after all the light and drama of Christmastime. It gets lost somehow as we pack away our trees and cards and decorations and return to normal after all the food and celebrations. Yet we should not forget the importance of this season, when God lets us in on the wonder of the gift that was given to the world in Bethlehem; when the invisible God became visible; when the unknown God became knowable in a newborn baby s cry. Epiphany is a season of light - of starlight and revelation. It is a season of thoughtful reflection and of heartfelt praise to God for the great gift of his Son. But, by the time the magazine is published, Epiphany will be nearly over. The baby whose birth we celebrated just a few short weeks ago is growing up fast. Soon he will be a man in the wilderness of Lent. The one whose passion and death we will remember during Holy Week, before we emerge into the joy of Easter morning. But for now hold on to those last days of Epiphany. Take just a moment to reflect on the wonder of the gift that was given in Bethlehem - that God became one of us. Happy New Year to you all, and every good wish for 2016 Blessings Dorothy 2

4 Prayer Diary Contributed by Alison Buick Dear Lord Every single evening as I m lying here in bed This tiny little prayer keeps running through my head. God bless all my family wherever they may be Keep them warm and safe from harm for they re so close to me. And God, there is one more thing I wish that you could do, Hope you don t mind me asking, Please bless my computer too. Now I know that it s unusual to bless a motherboard, But listen just a second while I explain it to you Lord. You see, this little metal box holds more than odds and ends Inside those small compartments rest so many of my friends. I know so much about them by the kindness that they give And this little scrap of metal takes me in to where they live. By faith is how I know them much the same as you. We share in what life brings us and from that our friendships grew. Please take an extra minute from your duties up above To bless those in my address book That s filled with so much love! Wherever else this prayer may reach to each and every friend, Bless each inbox and each person who hits send. When you update your heavenly list on your own great CD-ROM Bless everyone who says this prayer sent up to God.com. Amen. What Valentine Can I Give Him? What can I give to Jesus On this special Valentine s Day? How can I tell Him I ll love Him, And follow Him, come what may? How can I show I need Him? Should I send a red heart, with lace? How can I thank Him enough For his sacrifice, love and grace? What Valentine can I give Him, My adoration to impart? I ll give to Him what He wants most; I ll yield to Him my heart. 5 Church Register FUNERALS: In my Father s house are many mansions Miss Paula Jackson, 18 Keir Hardie Drive, Ardrossan Mrs Christina (Chrissie) Hamilton Caledonia Care Home, Saltcoats Mrs Brenda Courtney-West, Winton Street, Ardrossan Mr John Cran 2 Wellpark Road, Saltcoats NEW MEMBER: We are members one of another By Resolution of the Kirk Session Mrs Sylvia Mcainsh, 20 Eglinton Court, Saltcoats Quote for Lent Lent is like a long retreat during which we can turn back into ourselves and listen to the voice of God, in order to defeat the temptations of the Evil One. It is a period of spiritual combat which we must experience alongside Jesus, not with pride and presumption, but using the arms of faith: prayer, listening to the word of God and penance. In this way we will be able to celebrate Easter in truth, ready to renew the promises of our Baptism. 8 The Guild On 7th December we had a most interesting talk from David McLaughlan alias Frances Gay who writes in the Sunday Post. We heard about the life of the real Frances Gay and how the column came about. Next was our Carols & Readings on 14th December, photographs of which can be seen opposite. We thank Jennifer for organising the evening and to all the members who took part. Mrs Agnes McIntyre also sang a couple of carols while she played her auto-harp. Thanks to Joanna for sourcing the mince pies which we all enjoyed afterwards., and to round off the evening we exchanged our Santa parcels. We started the New Year at South Beach House on Wednesday 13th January. Jennifer opened the meeting with devotions and then handed over to Peggie and friends who entertained the residents with some community singing which they all enjoyed. We provided the eats for the afternoon tea which the staff served then we chatted with some of the residents before departing. We got the 2016 session off to a good start on Monday 23rd January with a Fiddlers Rally, to celebrate the beginning of the 150th celebrations. Due to the numbers (approximately 140) this event was held in the church and The Clyde Coast Strathspey and Reel Society entertained us with a good selection of sing-along-songs and two amusing recitations (photos opposite). We had hoped some folk would get up to dance but they were all too shy!! A light buffet was served in the hall. Many thanks to William & Fiona for their kitchen skills and to all others who helped and supported this event and made it such a success. 10 Property Report - Kirk Session, February 2016 SEAFIELD MANSE A few slates adrift on the roof but no ingress of water to the house. It would be good if we could hold off until worst of the weather is past before having a visit from the roofers. Utility room is being upgraded/ decorated. Thanks to dave for taking this work on. The visit by two members of the property committee to carry out the annual manse condition schedule visit found the property in good condition. Several items were highlighted and they will require some attention. MONTGOMERIE MANSE Property Offers have been received for the property and we now await information from the lawyers. Unfortunately, with the Christmas/New Year holiday we lost 2/3 weeks. The lawyer predicts it will be end of February before the paperwork/finance has been concluded. Roof The property has had roof works carried out but the recent storms brought additional problems and Roofguard will require to be recalled. The manse experienced boiler problems for a few weeks and spare parts had to be obtained. The boiler is now up and running and the house is benefitting from being heated. THE COTTAGE The necessary paperwork has been completed and the cottage is now on the market for sale - Details can be viewed online at CHURCH/HALLS Lighting The lighting units attached to the balcony have been replaced with 6 x three light spot units. Units more in keeping with the building and provide improved lighting at a cheaper cost. Happy to report that a new boiler has been installed in the vestry and we have heat in the small hall and surrounding area again. The church boiler has also received a service and the gas certificate has been renewed for Radiator leak Unfortunately, a radiator in the church balcony has developed a leak and the surrounding carpet has become very wet. Engineers have been out to inspect but need to return with new parts. Mima McSwan 10 The Army of the Lord A friend was in front of me coming out of church one day, and the preacher was standing at the door as he always is to shake hands. He grabbed my friend by the hand and pulled him aside. The Pastor said to him, You need to join the Army of the Lord! My friend replied, I m already in the Army of the Lord, Pastor. Pastor questioned, How come I don t see you except at Christmas and Easter? He whispered back, I m in the secret service. 1. Precious Lord, Take My Hand... And Help Me Up 2. It Is Well with My Soul... But My Knees Hurt 3. Nobody Knows the Trouble I Have Seeing Top Hymns for Old Folks 4. Just a Slower Walk with Thee 5. Count Your Many Birthdays, Name Them One by One 6. Go Tell It on the Mountain... But Speak Up

One of the projects that is supported and aims to help women to become more autonomous is the Ekwendeni Hospital Aids programme in Malawi. Some of the women in the group described have HIV, others have not but they are all encouraged to work together for their economic and social development.they are encouraged to take loans which help them get started to generate some income by selling fish, baking or marketing vegetables.they have found their voice Presbytery News Presbytery met on 1st December. 13 Letters of Appreciation Georgie Dodds wishes to thank the Church for the lovely flowers delivered to her recently by Solveig. They were most appreciated after her stay in hospital. Senga Welsh Many thanks for the lovely cards, telephone calls and flowers I received after my recent fall. They were very much appreciated and cheered me up. My most sincere thanks to all for the lovely flowers, many cards, phone-calls, visits and help I received after my knee surgery. All your caring thoughts and kindness has meant a great deal to me and appreciated so much. Margo Curtis The flowers which I received after breaking my wrist were just lovely and I wish to thank everyone at the church for remembering me. May Dunlop Thank you so much for beautiful flowers I received after the death of John. It was so comforting to know that we were being thought about at this very sad time. Janette Cran On behalf of myself and family we send a somewhat belated thank you for all the cards, phone calls and the church flowers we received after the sad loss of Margaret in November. Archie McAllister Many thanks for the lovely flowers which we both received from the church. they were gratefully appreciated. Bobby & Mildred Campbell Pastoral Care in Kirkgate Kirkgate is blessed to have a hard working Pastoral Care Committee that keeps in touch with people, arranging visits for those who are sick and housebound. They also keep me (as your minister) informed about people who need a visit at home or in hospital. The Pastoral Care Team is one of the ways in which we as a congregation strive to carry one another s burdens, but we rely on you to keep us updated about your friends and neighbours from the congregation who need support or a visit. This is especially important when it comes to hospital visiting, as visiting clergy no longer have access to in-patient lists at local hospitals. This means that the Minister and Pastoral Visitors only find out someone is in hospital when a relative, friend or neighbour lets us know. So if you know of someone in the congregation who is in need of a visit at home or in hospital, or if you would like a visit yourself, you can contact Miss Alison Buick ( ) or Mrs Morag Forsyth ( ) and visits will be organised. Be assured you can always get in touch with me directly. Even if you have to leave a message, I will call you back as soon as I can or you can send me an at: DGranger@churchofscotland. org.uk. The Pastoral Care Committee are always ready to widen the scope of their home visiting. So if you would like to opt in for home visits, please do get in touch with me. If you are able to join our team of visitors, I would also be happy to hear from you. You just need to be someone with a listening ear, who can extend the hand of support and friendship to another member of our congregation. Help carry one another s burdens, and in this way you will obey the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2) Rev Dorothy Granger ( ) 13
