Our hope is to speak with every church through our District Lay Leaders. New Ministers Arriving Soon! On June 12, 2013 we will be welcoming several new full time ministers into the Mt. 5 Page 5 THE CLOSING OF KEENER UNITED METHODIST CHURCH The United Methodist Church at Keener (formerly known as Greenwood), located in north Etowah County on U.S. Highway 11 near the DeKalb county line -- will hold its final worship service Sunday morning, May 19 th. Dr. Robin Scott, Superintendent of the Mountain Lakes District, will preside. There were an estimated 500 families living in the area in the middle to late 1800s. That population has dwindled greatly during the last many years until now only one family is left in the Keener UMC membership. For a long time, a big crowd for us would be eight to 10 people in our worship service, said 63-year old member Rick Correll. Now, it s just my family attending. Correll said a favorite childhood memory was that of his mother feeding Hobos who came through the community. She would feed em on our back porch then point to the church, about 300 yards away, and tell them they could go there to spend the night; if the weather was cold, she told them to turn on the heat to stay warm. One thing Correll said his family is very proud of is that we ve always paid our fair share to the North Alabama Conference. We have never asked them for a penny of help all through these years. The church has a storied history that began in 1825 when Methodists first came to Alabama. The Reverend Richard Neely established a congregation in Wills Valley. According to a W. Aaron s book regarding the history of Keener, 345 Cherokee Indians had become members of the valley s Methodist fellowship within a few years. One full-blooded Indian, named John Fletcher Boot, who spoke only his native tongue, became an outstanding Methodist preacher. Lewis wrote that another Indian preacher spoke some English but refused to preach, pray, sing or ask the blessing in any language but Cherokee he took the position the De Postle Paul say, no preach, no pray in unknown language; dat s it why I no do it. The earliest record of a church in the community is from a deed recorded in Memory W. Crump and his wife, Elizabeth Crump, stated the land was to be used as both a church and school, and for social occasions, for not only the Methodists, but for Baptists and Presbyterians and others. Lewis s research failed to find a date for when the building was erected but it was used as a church and school until What will happen to the historic church now that it will close on Sunday? Our family has bought the building and property, Corress said. It s the Lord s House and we ll continue to maintain it like we have for many years. The door is always unlocked and all are welcome to come in to pray at any time. Reference material in the Gadsden Public Library tells that the name Greenwood was changed to Keener in 1888 due to that family s donation of land to be used for right-of-way and for building a depot when the railroad extended its line from Chattanooga to Attalla. 12 Page 12 Fair Share Remittance 10% Tithe A Tithe is a Faithful Biblical Response People have asked me everywhere I am, Are we going to be able to keep the tithe system here in the Mt. Lakes District? The answer is yes! We had a very good year as most of our churches were faithful both in promptness and by giving a full tithe. All of our churches participated at some level. The first year of this experiment we were short of where we had been in previous years. This year we exceeded those levels and will finish the year more than ten percent ahead of last year. We are increasing our grants to local church projects from one thousand a month to two thousand a month. It is our goal to put 50% of what the District receives back into local churches. So thank you ahead of time for your faithfulness in If you have been tithing thank you and keep up that faithfulness. If you have been giving but not to the level of a tithe then increase that until you reach that fair share gift. And if you have not been participating to any significant level please know these gifts are making a difference and we look forward to your full participation! 14 Page 14 The United Methodist Women Recently, my husband, John, and I, walked through the old part of Glencoe Elementary School. The old part of the school is about to be torn down to make room for a new gym. It seems that this scenario is happening more and more. Even as United Methodist Women we have to change in some of the things that we do. One thing that never changes though is the Prayer Calendar. We are suppose to read the Prayer Calendar at our general meetings every month. We can t take this old tradition and throw it away. The missionaries may change, but their mission doesn t. They depend on us to lift them up in prayer and send them a birthday card. All the addresses are in the back of the calendar. Please remember to read you Prayer Calendar at each meeting. God will bless you for this. Thank you to Glencoe United Methodist Church for hosting the Poverty Study on May 4 th. Barbara Estes did a fantastic job as our teacher and the ladies of the UMW served a delicious meal. Thanks again for your hospitality. Mission U (School of Missions) will be on July 25 th thru July 27 th at Camp Sumatanga. I have the registration form and will be mailing soon to each unit. Hope you can participate in this mission study. First United Methodist Church in Gadsden, will host our district Mission U. The date is August 10, Nancy Lane will be teaching the Roma study.
