1 CENTRAL COAST WOODTURNERS A CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF WOODTURNERS PRESIDENT GEORGE PAES VICE PRESIDENT GORDON ROWLAND TREASURER TERRY COHEN LIBRARIAN - DON BARR EDITOR - BILL PETERSON Club meeting report for March 10, 2012 TODAY S GUESTS Toni Moore, Kenney s driver joined us once again, and Pres George again welcomed our newest members John Sylvester, Blaine Harris, and Dan Ross, and Jason Smith. ANNOUNCEMENTS We will have a sawdust Session at Tom Bullocks home on March 24 th. His address is 4537 Yerba Ave in Atascadero. If you have no car navigator try this: Take the San Anselmo Exit in Atascadero and head East toward El Camino Real; Turn left on Camino Real; Turn right on San Anselmo Rd; Turn right on Delores Rd; Turn left on Yerba Ave an on to his house Tom needs a session moderator and suggestions on problem areas to cover. You can send suggestions to George and he will relay them to Tom. As previously announced there will be a fund raising sale on April 14 th. George will accept items for sale and take to the event which he will attend with Bill Kandler. Contact George on this. Note that he needs the pricing and the turner will get 85% of the proceeds, with the balance going to the Charity.

2 Because George will be gone on as mentioned above and it is a meeting day, Terry Cohen will run our April 14 th meeting. On May 12 th Graeme Priddle will give a Demonstration. The location is Bill Kandler s shop. Directions will be given next month. The price is $25 for members and $35 for non members. Check Graeme Priddles s website to see his work. Again, this is our meeting Saturday so we will be DARK that day. To get your monthly woodturning fix you need to attend the demo! As we know the AAW Annual Symposium will be in San Jose this year from June 8 to 10. Details are in the Magazine or on the AAW website as we have mentioned over and over. There is a need for Auction assistants. If interested contact George for details. George asked for and got a show of interest to secure Molly Winton as a demonstrator in September. Stay tuned. Terry Cohen will contact the Nipomo Regional Park folks and secure our same time/same place annual picnic site. Save October 7 th for this fun event and note that there should be lots of door prizes and a game for all to play. Our new member Jason Smith makes flutes. On questioning he said they were Native American style. It is hoped he can show and tell us how to make flutes at a future time. Next month s Challenge Project will be Turners Choice and Pres. George urges EVEYONE to make an object of their choosing and bring to share. Library Change: Our faithful Librarian Don Barr will no longer lug all the tubs of books, VHS s and DVD s to each meeting. Instead he will only bring the most popular

3 segment, the DVD s to each meeting. Books and VHS tapes will be brought if a member calls or e mails Don and requests. The list of items in our Library was sent separately to all members by an a few days ago. Also, Don urges members to tell him of any items that they would like to see included in the Library. Treasurer Terry says we have the funds to make it happen, so let Don know! offer for sale at the April 14 th fund raiser: Bill Kandler showed a mistake in his Vortex: And finally, Kenney Moore s wife Toni announced that the Estrella Warbird Museum will have an open house family day event on May 19 th. She gave information to those who asked. CHALLENGE PROJECT This month s project was a segmented item. Many members participated: John Sylvester presented his Zig Zag bowl which he will Rick Haseman with his Eli Evisera complex star shaped very precisely cut blank:

4 selling so he keeps making them: And Rick showed a wedge operated sanding sled, and a oops tankard stave blank: Kenney Moore found the more he worked the nicer it looked although unplanned: Bob Gleason would like to turn other things but his very popular pens keep

5 John Sylvester encored with his purple heart and maple bowl: with his X Y jig. Ask him about this. SHOW AND TELL Don Barr left his Library long enough to make three from the same log hollow forms with spalting in different orientations: John Long offered his stave construction segmented bowl: Barry Lundgren did another two masterpieces with his Red Mallee bowl and his Elm Burl natural edge piece: George Paes did a segmented toilet paper extra roll holder. Because it held our raffle tickets it did not get photographed. George also told how he makes perfectly flat segment rings

6 Ernie Miller powered up his Rose Engine and made tops for two nice small boxes of dyed (painted?) and natural sugar maple : Both of Barry s creations will be offered at the April 14 th fund raiser Doug Brown did another of his see- through items and a lovely natural edge vessel: Gordon Rowland once again saved George Paes from another of his disasters:

7 Also he offered a hollow form vase with ceramic material insert threaded receptacle: Matrion Vosburg said yes and wished he hadn t to a request to duplicate a spindle. He asked all present for suggestions on how to do such a copy: That was it. Don t forget to make your choice of objects for our next meeting on April 14, 2012 same time, same place.
