1 Mountaineer Woodturners Newsletter Merry Christmas and Happy New Year December 2010 Our president Joe Smith presided over the meeting. Twenty four members were present at the meeting. There were no visitors. NEXT MEETING January 8th, 2011 at 10:00am Workshop on the Chapter Challenge Cedar Lakes Business Dues for 2011 are over due Our new Officers for 2011: John Sheets President Byron Young Vice President Bill Sands Secretary John Gregor Treasurer Dave Mays widow sent some tapes on woodturning for our library. These were turned over to our librarian, Jim Morrison. It was moved that we initiate a library fine of $1.00 after the second month an item is out, and that the fine be doubled each succeeding month. The motion was seconded and voted down. Gloria Gregorich of Cedar Lakes sent the group a letter of thanks for our support of Cedar Lakes. Tom Schottle received a letter from the Huntington Museum of Art in Huntington, WV, letting us know about an upcoming exhibit coming in April "Turning Wood Into Art". This exhibit, which is part of the Mason Collection, will present 65 objects by 40 artists. There was no treasurer s report. It was moved and seconded to accept the definition of Professional Turner as described in Stan Cook s Chapter Challenge description as Mountaineer Woodturners standard. The motion was passed unanimously. The Professional Turner will be anyone who meets at least one of the following criteria: Is juried into Tamarack in any form of turning. Has a business license for some form of turning. Has sold or attempted to sell any turning under a business name. Has sold or attempted to sell any turning at an art/craft show, gallery exhibit, store, gift shop, museum, ebay, etsy, website, or any other venue open to the general public. Has sold any turnings at the wholesale level. John Sheets reminded us about the lathe turned work that will represent our chapter at the AAW symposium. The chapter s single entry

2 piece will be selected at the January meeting, so bring your entries then. For more details, consult the October Newsletter. Some of the Guidelines are: Dimensions must be 8" x 8" x 8" or less Work must require no assembly to display Weight limit is 3 pounds All entered work must be for sale January 8 th : Chapter Challenge workshop and practice February 12 th : Chapter Challenge judging 2011 Schedule Show and Tell Click picture for larger image Myke Hymes brought in one of his wonderful Christmas tree ornaments. Mike Ellison showed us a beautiful segmented bowl from Cherry, Walnut, and Sycamore. U.K. Dawson brought in three attractive bowls and plate from Spaulted Beech.

3 He also had a nice bowl and plate from Ash.

4 Bill Sands had a very nice dish with a segmented Maple cover. Bill also showed us a beautiful Maple plate and Maple bowl. He had a wonderful segmented bowl and an attractive Birch log bowl which he had stained dark red.

5 Dave Jones turned a mistake into an interesting plaque a Walnut vase on an Oak plaque. Dave also had a very nice natural edge bowl from Weeping Cherry and plate from Maple.

6 Warnie Lore showed us a set of hollowed pool balls on a base. Warnie also had a very nice Oak weedpot. Byron Young brought in some of his great Christmas tree ornaments. He also showed us a neat music box he had turned. He said the movement itself cost him $200.

7 Program Click picture for larger image The program for the meeting was a demonstration by Stan Cook, showing some aspects of the Chapter Challenge. Chapter Challenge 2011 The challenge for 2011 will require turning a pen and base/holder. The details are given in the enclosed description.

8 For your information our presently paid up membership roster is enclosed. Remember that only members in good standing (paid up dues) may enter work in the Chapter Challenge, or may present items for the AAW symposium entry. Many thanks to you all for your help and putting up with me all these years. Having seen some of Bill s work, I am sure he will do a great job and bring some good new ideas to the job. While going through some of my records, I came across some data, which at least was interesting to me. Chapter Trivia Speaking of dues, 30 persons (only) have paid their dues for Dues at $20 a year are a bargain. When I started this job the dues were $12/year. In 2002 they went up to $18/year. Then in 2005 they were raised to $20/year, where they have stayed for 6 years. I hope the 30 paid up members are not all there is. Membership has been pretty steady through the years.
