Words from Star Principal Herald Howdy all, My tenure is running down and the time for apps will expire at the end of February. So far I have receive applications from HL Rosalia O Brogan, my emergency deputy, and Ld Eirik Halfdannarsson, current Arbalest Herald. If anyone has commentary on either of these candidates, please forward them to Laurel, TRM Aaron and Britta, and myself. Everyone please welcome Lady Cahira of Bonwicke as Asterisk Herald. Ld Griffin ap Rhys had unexpected real life issues that has transplanted him indefinitely into 'enemy' territory. Maybe he'll spy on them for us ;) In any case he did a great job while holding office, we will miss him, and wish his speedy return. Lady Cahira has already started in on the backlog and organization of the Asterisk Office and with the help of Baroness Kathri and the rest of the heralds down in the Houston Area, I expect the submissions process to be back up to speed shortly. Also, HL Etienne de St. Amaranth has taken over as Nordsteorra Herald for the Northern Region. Ld Tagdh has chosen to follow a path in the seneschalate and I wish him well at it. Ld Tagdh did a great job and I am sure the region is in good stead for HL Etienne's care. Lady Anézka z Rozmitála has taken on the job of Wakeforest herald in charge of teaching book heraldry in the kingdom. Please contact her if you need any help in learning how to use our resources. I'm sure she will be a great help. The offices that are open or coming open at the time of writing this are Armillary Herald, Tressure Herald, and Golden Staff Pursuivant. I have one applicant for Tressure whom I may place shortly. If you have any interest in these offices, please apply. In the coming months several other offices will be coming open as their two years comes to a close. I am going to recommend to the next SPH that they allow the current holder of an office to apply for the office again if they wish to continue in their office. Some people want more time to accomplish goals in the office they are holding and I want an option open and available in case this is so. The Ansteorran Heraldic and Scribal Symposium 2002 has been awarded to The Shire of Mooneschadowe up in OK. I am sure they will be letting us all know when the event will be as soon as they reserve the calendar date. Everyone please plan on attending. It will be a great event! As at least some of you all know, I have been revising the Addendum to the Admin Handbook the Master François created when he was Star. Currently we are in the second revision and by the time this AG is published, we will most likely be on the third revision. Whether this is for more general commentary or the specific section being sent to those it will apply to depends on what commentary I receive on this second revision. Everyone with an opinion is encouraged to comment. I will be happy to a copy of the Word DOC to anyone who wishes to comment. The project should be done before I step down as Star. Lastly, but far from least, is news about the Herald's Handbook. Yes, this almost mythical publication is yet again being looked into. I have asked and given the project to Estencele Herald, Ld Chandranath Mitra, who has engaged one of his deputies to start work on the project. I have forwarded your commentary from some months past to Ld Chandra and his deputy, Lord Seanán mac Tighearnáin from Dragonsfire Tor, as well as many resources I have accumulated. The idea is to create a paper succinct version for printout available online for anyone who wants it as well as a much expanded version online that would be difficult and unwieldy if actually printed ;) I expect the printed version to go through a number of revisions and changes after first publication so as to make it the reference it is supposed to be as well as to keep it up to date on content. For those interested, King's Round Table (formerly 'Red Tape') will be on the first weekend of March. I would like to publicly acknowledge the efforts of my deputies before the assemblage when I make my report so I would appreciate any who can attend to do so. Without you all, I would not have been able to accomplish what changes that have been made, and I hope, for the benefit and betterment of the College of Heralds. Borek, Star The Ansteorran Gazette is the official Monthly publication of the College of Heralds of the Kingdom of Ansteorra. 2 LETTER FROM BORDURE HERALD Greetings unto all, I am happy to say that I have returned from a couple offshore adventures related to mundane life and am now going to be focusing my attention on getting our LoIs back on track by assisting our new Asterisk Herald in getting the ILoI production back on schedule. We had a couple months without LoIs, so I expect to be quite busy for the next couple months trying to get the submissions together and sent up to Laurel. As fortune would have it, however, I have recently acquired a deputy! Lady Gwen verch Cynwrig de Ynys Mon of Westgate has graciously agreed to assist me. She is a newcomer to heraldry, so in addition to helping me, she'll be learning as much as I can teach her. Then she'll learn the 'right' stuff from Auntie Kathri. Finally, I would like to thank everyone for their support and patience as we get the submissions process back on track. In service, Lord Alden Drake Bordure Herald LETTER FROM OBELISK HERALD Greetings to all! The Gazette again this month is a bit short, having no Internal Letter of Intent, due to the switchover of the Asterisk office. Rest assured that next month will be a nice fat issue! This issue should include the latest warrant roster of the College of Heralds. If help us keep this up to date by reporting any changes that need to be made to the appropriate office in most cases, this will be the regional officer, or Star Principal. Due to a typo or just lack of sleep, the Who Sends What To Whom table on the back page was slightly inaccurate. The Award and Honor Report Forms (i.e., court report forms) should be sent to Zodiacus and Sable Scroll. As usual, any comments, complaints, or questions about the Gazette should be sent my way. Articles and letters for publication are also greatly appreciated! I can be best reached at obelisk@ansteorra.org, or my snail mail address is on the back page. In service, Lady Emma de Fetherstan Obelisk Herald LETTER FROM NORDSTEORRA HERALD First off, let me say that I am happy to be taking on the role of Northern Regional Herald and that I look forward to serving the region and the College of Heralds. I am Honorable Lord Etienne de Saint Amaranth. I have served in the past as Obelisk Herald (publisher of the heralds' newsletter) and as a branch herald. I like to consult on armory submissions, I dabble a bit in name submissions (but generally know who to ask for better info), and enjoy all aspects of voice heraldry. I also like to teach and mentor so it is never an imposition to ask me to help someone through their first court or to assist them in doing an online conflict check. I do not have the regional files yet. In fact, due to professional travels, I am currently writing this missive from the coastal lands of Trimaris. (They don't know that I'm here, so shhh...) I will be getting with Tadgh to transfer the files as soon as we can schedule a mutually good time to make the transfer. I appreciate all of Tadgh's efforts in this office and wish him well in his new role serving in the seneschalate. To business... I will be contacting all of the current heralds in the Northern Region individually in the near future (and seneschals of groups without heralds). If for any reason, you need to reach me about a heraldic issue in the North before I contact you, please feel free to contact me first. My contact info is included in the signature. Until everything is transferred, DO NOT send s for me to the Northern Regional Herald account on the ansteorra.org server. I do not have access to it yet and you may wait quite awhile for an answer. Please use my business and my home phone and address until further notice (see contact info in signature below). The invitation to contact me is not limited to heralds and seneschals. As a regional herald, I serve the region and the college. Anyone is welcome to contact me with issues, concerns, expectations, hopes, dreams, kegs of mead, invitations to bardic circles, etc. Reports from local heralds were due (if I understand correctly) by Jan. 10 to Tadgh. For February, they need to come to me. If a message gets missed, or a group herald is not on either of these lists, then I am sure Tadgh and I will stay in touch but try to get the word to your local northern heralds. 3 ANSTEORRAN COLLEGE OF HERALDS Internal Collated Commentary on ILoI 0111 Unto the Ansteorran College of Heralds does Estrill Swet, Retiarius Pursuivant, make greetings. For information on commentary submission formats or to receive a copy of the collated commentary, you can contact me at: Deborah Sweet 824 E 8 th, Stillwater, OK / (before 10pm) dssweet@okstate.edu Commenters for this issue: Da'ud - Da'ud ibn Auda, al-jamal Herald von Lübeck - of Raven's Fort sends commentary on ILoI November 2001 Collated Commentary on IloI Almaith ingen Chormaic (Trelac) Appeal of Household name House Golden Hunter. Primary name registered 06/99. [Household name] It looks well armed and armored this time around. Kingdom should support it. Household name: Forwarded to Laurel. 2. Díglach úa hamalgaid (Steppes) New name. [Name] It looks like the proper construction. Name: Forwarded to Laurel. 3. Elin the Timid (Steppes) New name. New device. Quarterly gules and azure, in bend two dolphins argent. Da'ud [Name] "Timid" is found in the OED no earlier than 1528, well after the time in which bynames of this sort were formed. [Name] search=timid&submit2=go The Encarta dictionary gives timid from the mid 16th century. Webster's Collegiate online: timid Ety- mology: Latin timidus, from timere to fear Date: 1549 Name: Forwarded to Laurel. Device: Forwarded to Laurel (pending a conflict check) 4. Lucia Ariosto (Bryn Gwlad) New name. [Name] Lucia: De Felice, Nomi italieni, page 239 header Lucia gives it from the saint in Syracuse and Latin Lucius. Ariosto: De Felice, Nomi italieni, page 74 Ariosto lists this as a given name and in the cognomen Ludovico Ariosto author of Orlando Furioso. It mentions it derives from the original location of a feudal family Ariosto di Bologna. Name: Forwarded to Laurel. 5. Ralf of Oak Lawn the Oxhhandler (Bjornsborg) Change of Device. If registered, release old device, Vert, on a bend sinister Or, between two oak sprigs argent, a water buffalo s rack azure, registered in 10/95. Name registered 12/91. Vert, an oak leaf bendwise sinister inverted fructed, in base a bull statant, a bordure argent. Da'ud [Device] Given the relative placement of the charges on the field, this is much more likely to be accurately blazoned as Vert, in pale an oak leaf bendwise sinister inverted fructed and a bull statant, a bordure argent. Device: Forwarded to Laurel as reblazoned by Da ud. 6. Ralf of Oak Lawn the Oxhhandler (Bjornsborg) New badge. Name registered 12/91. Vert, an oak leaf bendwise sinister inverted fructed, a bordure argent. [Badge] A possible conflict but it is difficult to be sure what this one looks like: Eva van Oudeachterkol October of 1986 (via the East): Vert, an elm leaf in bend sinister environed of a cartouche voided argent. for Embla Willsdottir Badge: Forwarded to Laurel. 7. Xenos the Butcher (Northkeep) New device. Name registered 08/01. Azure, a camel rampant Or vested of a fez gules and maintaining in its mouth a bottle fesswise vert. Da'ud [Device] That the bottle is fesswise reversed needs to be noted in the blazon, else its top will be to dexter. I feel that I've seen this rampant, fez-wearing, drinking camel somewhere before, but I have been unable to place it. In any case, it looks more like the punchline to a joke than it does armory, Page 3

4 but that's just a personal opinion and not a bar to registration. Device: Forwarded to Laurel as reblazoned by Da ud. LAUREL ACCEPTANCES AND RETURNS FOR OCTOBER 2001 These are the Ansteorran excerpts for the June 2001 Letter of Intent taken from the October 2001 LoAR. Fast Tracked Items on LoI Some of these left kingdom with problems. 1) Alfred Huddlestone (Bryn Gwlad) His name is registered as Josephus de Hudelesdun. I guess this is a Name Change and Resubmitted Device. If it is an appeal of the name registered, it should be remembered he requested authenticity changes for a 12th-13th century English name. This would likely require payment for a change of name. If you prefer the name as it is on the form, please, please, do not check the "change my name" boxes. 2) Caillín mac Eógan [Name] The last name should rather be Eóghain because of the genitive case in Gaelic. 4) Claire la Combe (Greywood) [Device] Conflict with Tomas Pancaldo June of 2001 (via Drachenwald): "Per bend azure and sable, a unicorn rampant, a bordure argent." 6) Feradach mac Congail mec Ruadri [Name] As a two generation Gaelic name this should be meic Ruaidhrí for pre 1200 to match the rest of the name. Check Quick and Easy Gaelic Names for the construction. quickgaelicbynames/ 11) Kouac Myklos (Loch Soilleir) Starra Skraelingadottir August of 1989 (via Atlantia): Or, a tortoise tergiant palewise proper, shelled vert, between three mullets of eight points azure. I get only 1 CD for change in the number of mullets. 12) Leona of Remington [Badge] This should clear Charles Ravenstone August of 1995 (via the West): Per fess lozengy argent and sable and argent, a bird's leg a-la-quise sable. Fieldless gives one CD and the gules feet of the chough should give a CD. However conflict with Arnolw Rabenhertz March of 1995 (via Drachenwald): (Fieldless) A raven's foot couped sable, armed and banded gules. There is a CD for fieldless. The raven's foot and the chough will be identical since a Cornish chough leg proper will be sable, armed gules (red feet). Therefore these badges will be effectively identical. 13) Líadan Bregh [Device] This may conflict with Erryk Blackwolf June of 1973: Per bend sinister sable and gules, a plate. I don't think you get the second CD for a plate vs 3/4 of a plate. Alden Drake. Name and device. Per pale gules and Or, on a chief sable three lozenges Or. Dafydd Whitacre. Name. Submitted as Daffydd Whitacre, no documentation was provided and none could be found that Daffydd is a reasonable variant of the Welsh Dafydd. We have changed the spelling to a documented form. Elisaveta af Isefjord. Name and device. Argent, a pile inverted wavy throughout vert and a chief azure. Erasmus of Bonwicke. Holding name and device (see RETURNS for name). Or, a saltire raguly gules in base a card pique sable. Submitted under the name Erasmus Totengräber. Herbert von Kalden. Device. Per bend azure and sable, a bend wavy argent. Many commenters thought that the bend needed to be wider and to have deeper waves. The full-sized emblazon has a better drawing of the bend wavy than the mini-emblazon. Hurrem bint Rashid. Name (see RETURNS for device). Marjory Macrae. Household name House of the White Shark and badge. Per saltire vert and Or, on a hurt a shark naiant argent. Marquet de Hyet. Name. Submitted as Marquet de la Hyet, we have dropped the definite article la. Since Hyet is a French placename, it is a proper noun and the definite article la ( the ) is out of place. Definite articles are only used in locative bynames that refer to generic locations. For example, the definite article la is included in the byname de la fontainne 'of the fountain', which appears in Colm Dubh's article "An Index to the Given Names in the 1292 Census of Paris". Megan Glenleven. Reblazon. Azure, a black-footed ferret passant guardant Or marked sable and argent, grasping in its dexter forepaw a rose argent, barbed, seeded, slipped, and leaved proper. Her original blazon was Azure, a black-footed ferret passant guardant proper, grasping in its dexter forepaw a rose argent, barbed, seeded, slipped, and leaved proper [Mustela nigripes]. Members of the College were confused about what tincture a black-footed ferret proper might be, citing various references to support interpretations of either argent or Or. Inspection of her form shows that the ferret is predominantly Or with a black mask, forefeet, and tail, and white showing at the very bottom of the belly. The blazon has been changed to Page 4

5 reflect the predominant Or tincture. The term black-footed has been retained in the blazon. We would not currently specify a species to this level of detail in blazon, but this term is grandfathered to the submitter. The Linnaean species reference has been omitted, as it was only necessary due to the use of Linnaean proper. The term black-footed should specify the type of ferret sufficiently. Melodia Shaw. Name. Sunnifa Eiríksdóttir. Badge. (Fieldless) A peacock Or the tail marked gules. This is clear of conflict with Kedivor Tal ap Cadugon, (Fieldless) In pale a peacock close perched atop a hawk's bell Or. There is one CD for fieldlessness and another CD for adding the co-primary hawk's bell. The markings on the tail of the peacock are the eyes of the tail feathers. However, we are hesitant to use the term eyed in the blazon, as was done in the Letter of Intent. The term eyed could be confused with the heraldic term orbed, which refers to the bird's eyes. THE FOLLOWING HAVE BEEN RETURNED FOR FURTHER WORK Aldreda the Undecided. Name. This name uses an abstract past participle in a descriptive byname. The applicable precedent is: [Returning Deirdre the Distracted.] While the LoI documented the word "distract" to very late period, no evidence was presented, nor could any of the commenters find any, to demonstrate that epithetical nicknames were constructed in this way from a fairly abstract past participle. Without such evidence, we are unable to register this. [4/94, p.15] No evidence has been provided to contradict this precedent. As such, this name must be returned. Erasmus Totengräber. Name. No documentation was provided and none could be found that Totengräber is a period German byname. While the occupation of 'gravedigger' is certainly period, the forms of this byname found in Bahlow (p. 184 s.n. Graber) are Gräber (1417) and Greber (1385). Brechenmacher (s.n. Graber) lists Graber (1365). None of these forms include Toten- as a protheme. The change from Totengräber to a form of Gräber would be a major change. As the submitter only allows minor changes, we must return this name. The armory has been registered under the holding name Erasmus of Bonwicke. Hurrem bint Rashid. Device. Per saltire azure and sable, two curved swords addorsed inverted argent overall a rose Or. The emblazon here is confusing. It is impossible to tell whether these inverted swords are palewise in fess or in saltire. This is a combination of the fact that the center of the swords is obscured by the overall rose, and the fact that the swords are curved. One also cannot tell whether these are scimitars, seaxes, or possibly falchions. Because of the identifiability problem, this must be returned. Karolus Janos. Badge. Sable, a patriarchal cross within a bordure argent. Conflict with Konstantin Syncellus, Per pale sable and gules, a cross patriarchal within a bordure argent. There's only one CD for the change in the field. Mihrimah the Traveler. Name. It was suggested that the byname the Traveler was registerable in this instance per the Lingua Anglica allowance. However the Lingua Anglica allowance requires documentation of the descriptive byname in the original language. The cover letter that accompanied the January 1993 LoAR included a clarification of the Lingua Anglica allowance, including: Less codified, but of long practice, has been the translation of epithets into our lingua franca. Again, this follows a common historian's usage: Harald I of Norway, for instance, is far better known as Harald Fairhair than by the untranslated Harald Haarfagr. Eric the Red, Philip the Good, Charles the Fat, all are translations of the period names, not the period names themselves. SCA names are permitted a similar translation: a simple epithet, documented as a period form, may be translated into English. (We prefer to register the untranslated form, but I concede that such rigor doesn't always serve our clients' best interests.) [Cover Letter for LoAR January 1993] As no documentation of a Turkish byname meaning 'the Traveler' was presented, the Lingua Anglica allowance does not apply. If such documentation had been presented, this name would be registerable in its current form under the Lingua Anglica allowance. No evidence has been found that the bynames the Wanderer or the Traveler were used in English in period. However, they are both SCA compatible. Though the correct modern spelling is Traveler, the spelling that has been registered most often is Traveller. Therefore, this byname is registerable in both the spelling the Traveler and the Traveller. Given the significant contact between Turks and crusaders, combining a Turkish given name and an English byname in the same name is registerable, though it is a weirdness. However, this name contains a second weirdness for use of an SCA compatible element. As the name has two weirdness, it is not registerable. Page 5
