3 Polling A polling of the current paid members of the Barony of Atenveldt will be conducted on June 6th, 2009 at Kingdom A&S Collegium, hosted by the Barony of Atenveldt. The polling will be held from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm. If the results of that polling do not show a clear preference, a second run-off polling will be held immediately following the closing and tabulation of ballots from the first poll. Members are encouraged to remain onsite should a second poll be necessary. To participate in the polling, you must possess a valid SCA membership that is listed in the zip codes assigned to the Barony of Atenveldt and be eighteen years of age or older. Current membership will be verified on a membership list at the polling site, or you may present an online membership renewal confirmation that is dated after the Milpitas Registry Office List was generated. A driver s license or government picture ID will also be required to be shown to prove age and identity. There may be some SCA members who do not reside within the zip codes currently assigned to the Barony but who play exclusively in the Barony and consider themselves as active members of the group. These individual will be allowed to cast a ballot of a different color after signing a statement agreeing to not participate in the polling of any other group in the kingdom for the next three years. Absentee Ballots Proxy ballots are NOT allowed. If you are unable to attend the polling, you may follow the procedures below to submit an Absentee Ballot Letter. No exceptions will be made to the timeline or contents for an Absentee ballot to be counted, so review the requirements carefully, and send your letters in as soon as the candidates are announced. You must write a letter to the Kingdom Seneschal stating your preference in the poll. Your absentee ballot must be RECEIVED by May 31st, 2009 to be counted. DO NOT require a signature at delivery on a mailed ballot, as that will delay delivery. If there is a second polling, absentee ballots will only be counted if the preferred candidates remain in the run-off polling. Your letter must include ALL of the following: The names of one and only one couple you prefer as candidates. Your modern and SCA name and the mailing address for your membership, including zip code. Proof of membership (Any one of membership number, photocopy of membership card, photocopy of Southwind label, photocopy of confirmation printout from online membership renewal) Palm Prints 3 May 2009

4 Photocopy of a driver s license or government ID showing your modern name, zip code, and proof that you are 18 years of age or older. We are fully aware that this commitment would require three years of basically being available in person, via land line or electronic means seven days a week. We also realize that it would require us to attend Business Meetings, Baronial events, and as many Kingdom events as possible. This would especially include all Wars within the kingdom, and helping in representing the Kingdom and Barony at any other wars we would be able to attend. We also realize the financial cost that will be incurred. We also realize that several important decisions might need to be made. We know that some of them will be made strictly by local laws, some will be made strictly in accordance with Capora or Kingdom law, and some of them will have to be made as an immediate judgment call. We understand the importance of checking with the Baronial Seneschal, and when needed the Crown and Kingdom Seneschal, and any other officers that would be affected on major decisions for guidance and checking with them concerning the effect of the various rules that would effect these decisions. We also realize that consistency in our decisions and being fair to everyone is of the utmost importance if we were to be affective at leadership and guidance to encourage growth and harmony in the Barony. 6 address for 16 years and has no intention of moving anytime soon and that would include the upcoming terms of service. The (Court) Baroness was the Kingdom Deputy Royal Archer from April, 1992 for approximately four years; she was the Atenveldt Baronial Scribe from November, 1993 to March, 1995 under then Baron Sir Gerald the Inverter and TE Robin and Penelope. She held many non warranted positions including being the head lady in waiting for Her Grace Varia for both her reigns. She was also the Archery co- autocrat for Estrella 7, 8, 9, and 10, autocrat for the Queen s Birthday Celebration in April, 1992, and the autocrat for the baronial investiture of Nootka and Guilda of Sun Dragon. Baroness Dalla also autocrated Founders Day under Their Excellencies Robin and Penelope, autocrated which was a camping event in 1996, a May Day Collegium and was the feast-o-crat for one of their Baronial Championships. Recently She was a deputy autocrat for the March, 2004 Crown List and Warlord Tournament Event held at Estrella Park, co- autocrat for the March 2005 Crown list, co-autocrat for the 2005 Southwind Benefit Faire, and feast-ocrat for the th Night Celebration. She was also co-autocrat for the November 2008 Coronation. She also held sewing, beading, and pattern making at her home once a month from 3/2005 to spring of 2008 when she became the Pre-Reg Emergency Deputy for Estrella XXV. She would like to be the Baroness of Atenveldt because she believes Atenveldt is a great Barony and it has been her long time home. She believes that she can help it grow and prosper. She also believes that her experience as a kingdom level deputy officer and a baronial officer, as well as her many contacts and friends she made while holding these offices, their wisdom and experiences can be a major aid in this. Baroness Dalla is a registered nurse and would have no problems meeting the financial responsibilities of being Baroness. I have been a sustaining member since my return to the Kingdom in October of My current membership expires on 31 December, 2009 and started June My membership number is I will be renewing with a three year membership when appropriate. Except for five years in Meridias where I did not have time to play, I have been a sustaining member since the late 80 s. Since my return to the kingdom, I have held the non-warranted positions of Lt. of the guard, BOA and the Premier Aten Ranger, BOA. 7 I held several offices before going to Meridias. (Please forgive if I do not have exact dates as most of my records were destroyed in a house fire in late This is what I could piece together by talking with those that I worked with.) I was a warranted Baronial Deputy Herald from Under Lord Andre Du Marche and was his drop dead deputy most of In early 1993 I was elevated to the office of Twin Palms Pursuivant for a period of six months under Baron Sir Gerald the Inverter. I served as a deputy Principality field Herald and Book Herald from and was part of the Principality Commenting Staff under Mistress Angela when she was the Solar Herald. I also worked with Mistress Helen Jennet of Foxhall and HL Richard, the Kingdom Herald, on the kingdom commenting staff for several years but I do not believe that this was a warranted position. I believe the dates that I worked as a kingdom commenter were from During the same time, I was a kingdom deputy field herald, and book herald. Then the rules got changed to one warranted office at a time and I took a short break and just did my non-warranted positions and heralded as needed. These are some of my non-warranted positions included being on the Baronial Guard of Atenveldt since its inception during the reign of Their Excellencies Robin and Penelope and being a member of the Queen s Guard for Varia II. I also took on the responsibility of running one of the Know World Championships for Baron Blackarrow when he was the Kingdom Royal Archer at Estrella War. During my early Estrella Wars (4-12) I averaged between volunteer hours but since returning,for Estrella 18-24, I have able to do about hours per war. I am currently serving the Barony of Atenveldt as the Premiere Ranger, Lt of the Guard, Baronial Armored Combat Champion. From I was also a deputy sheriff and deputy marshal. I am also a past baronial archery champion. I am currently a Baronial Deputy Seneschal, have been for the last five years, and my warrant has just been renewed. I have lived within the borders of the Barony of Atenveldt since my return in I have no plans of moving out of the barony at any time in the future. 8 I wish to become Baron because I believe that I have much to offer the Barony as a leader. I am flexible, considerate, compassionate, and know when a friend is a friend, and how not to show favoritism. I look for the good in everyone, and try to match a person s abilities and desires for service to where they are best suited. For me, being Baron would be another way to serve the Kingdom and all those that I have known and cared for a long time. I also feel I have enough experience both as an officer and an autocrat to be able to effectively do the job. As a small business owner communications and attention to detail were my number one needs, I believe that this is the same with being a Baron and that is what I will strive for. Our most recent experiences in servicing the Kingdom was to autocrat the November2008 Coronation, Jan, th Night, and the March 2005and March 2004 Crown Lists. We were the co-autocrats in charge of site, fighting and food at the 2005 South Wind Benefit Faire. Baroness Dalla and I have several things in common when it comes to what we would like to see for the Barony and what our goals are. We would both like to encourage growth and more participation from those that are already members. We would like to encourage paid memberships to help the Barony to be able to do more financially. We both believe in trying to get more interaction and co-operation between the various groups of the Kingdom. We both believe in more heraldry and pageantry. Many of the fighters,, artisans, archers and those that do service as their main attribute have their own little groups that they prefer to hang out with so activities that include interaction between all of these groups would be encouraged. We also believe that efforts need to be made to keep the SCA in the public eye in a positive manner so that we may be able to attract the best that future generations have to offer, as well as those of our generations that still have a dream and a willingness to jump in and help. We fully understand that the SCA is something different to everyone that plays and it would be our responsibility to make sure that this attitude stays in the forefront. This way everyone can enjoy events instead of just a few. This is what we tried to do at the numerous events that we have autocrated. We realize that the Barony has had problems lately with participation at events. We also know that between the park fees and the lack of attendance at events, the barony is loosing money. We realize that if the trend continues the Palm Prints 8 May 2009

9 way it is that the barony can be in financial trouble within a few years. Because of this, we need to find ways of encouraging more attendance at events by making events more diversified. We also need to sponsor more kingdom events. Finally we need to encourage donations to the barony and to have more fundraisers at events. This would also require encouraging members of the populace to donate items for the fundraisers. 10 To Your Royal Majesties, Your Royal Highnesses, Your Excellencies, esteemed Seneschal and the ever growing Atenveldt populace, we hope this missive finds you well. We, Baron Edward de Foxton and Lady Annalies Katerina Schneider do send greetings and our intent to serve the Barony of Atenveldt as Baron and Baroness. We have been involved in the Barony of Atenveldt our entire SCA careers, serving the Barony in a multitude of ways. In 2001 I, Edward became Baronial Deputy Seneschal to Master Gavin through the end of Their Excellencies Edric and Aurora s Baronial tenure. In 2002, I stepped into the Baronial Seneschal position under the reign of Their Excellencies William and Dascha. At the end of my warrant, I dedicated my time to the Estrella War maps and roads and took on the role of Chamberlain for His Excellency Rhys during his service as Baron of Atenveldt. I have continued to remain a part of the Estrella War planning and implementation crew and have taken on other minor positions for the War, such as Pre-War Gate. In 2001 I, Annalies organized the merchants at Wednesday night fighter practices as the Atenveldt Baronial Keeper of the Faire. I have served as Lady-in- Waiting in the Barony of Atenveldt for both Their Excellencies Aurora and Edine and as Head Lady-in-Waiting for Her Excellency Dascha. I have also been involved in supporting various other events both in the Barony of Atenveldt and at the Estrella War. As to the offices of Baron and Baroness, we are both very familiar with the duties and responsibilities as laid out in Corpora and Lex Atenveldtus and we know we will be most effective in serving the populace these next two years. From our mundane lives, we bring our leadership skills and experience working in promotional events. We now feel that we have the knowledge and support to serve the Barony in this capacity. The Barony is our home, our family and our friends. Our dream for the future is of a supportive, cohesive community dedicated to the study and recreation of medieval life. Our plans are to continue the traditions of the SCA and promote its ideals. The Barony of Atenveldt s strength is in the service done by its households and the wonderful fighters and artisans within. As such, we will seek out those individuals who wish to create and participate in exciting, inexpensive and fun events that capture the spirit of medieval Europe. Through these events and their experiences within the Barony, we hope to see Palm Prints 10 May 2009

11 more people realize their dream. We will also continue to work on the fiscal challenges created by this interesting economy. The Barony is not perfect and it never will be, but we can make it better if we work at it and understand and respect each other. We hope you will look with favor on our Letter of Intent and allow us the privilege of running for Baron and Baroness of Atenveldt. 12 Unto Their Most Royal Majesties, Walrick and Cecilia, King and Queen of Atenveldt and their Royal High nesses, Craven and Elzbieta, Prince and Princess of Atenveldt and also to Baroness, Mistress Isabeau della Farfalla, the Seneschal of Atenveldt, do we, Master Ritchyrd McUath and Dame Katherine of Cate Hall send warm and respectful greetings. It is our desire to present ourselves to the people of the Barony as candidates for Baron and Baroness of Atenveldt. We two have long considered how we might best serve the needs of the Barony of Atenveldt. We have both been active in the Barony for many years, have held and are holding Baronial offices and we attend Baronial events. The opportunity to do more for the Barony now presents itself, and we hope to be found worthy to lead the Barony for the next term. If we are chosen to lead the Barony, we intend to focus on supporting the officers of the Barony. We will support the Seneschal in his task of negotiating with the Parks Department for the space we use at Encanto Park and the task of raising money for the lights. We believe that his abilities will enable the Barony to move forward in a positive way. We are very mindful of the abilities of the Barony s Knight Marshal in leading and coordinating the important task of providing a well-run fighter practice and also in devising a teaching/training program for those interested in learning heavy combat skills. The Rapier Marshall has the special confidence of Master Ritchyrd, who fights with the rapier, to continue his good works. As we both are ardent supporters of the Arts and Sciences, we look forward to working with the A&S Minister in her work of fostering the Arts in the Barony. We have every confidence that she will take a strong lead in encouraging teaching and exhibitions of such works. We look forward to working with the Heralds, both book and field, to continue to provide the services to the people, whether brand new or "old timers" that do so much to create the atmosphere of the Middle Ages for which we all strive. We will strive to keep the OP updated and maintained for the Barony. All the Officers of the Barony can count on us to support and aid them in their duties in any way we can, thus allowing them to make this Barony to be better. The reason we are so eager to work with the talented officer corps of the Barony of Atenveldt is that there are numerous, serious challenges facing the Barony. We must deal with the real world economic difficulties as they interact with our Dream. We will need to hold successful events to raise money for the Palm Prints 12 May 2009

13 functioning of the Barony and maintaining fighter practice. We recognize that we cannot rely on Estrella War to be the primary source of funding, because of the impact of the economic downturn on the war. These Realities affect the whole of the SCA and we believe that our role would be to develop a spirit of cooperation with the other Baronies of this great Kingdom, especially with Sundragon and Twin Moons to help us pool our efforts and provide exciting, enjoyable events for the people of all the Baronies. For at least the next year or so, the number of events sponsored by each barony must be smaller, so it is in the best interests of all Baronies to attend each other s events and allow the economic problems provide opportunities for us to get to know each other better and to get to value each other more and more as we mingle, fight and enjoy all the events scheduled for the Valley of the Sun. We view our challenge this way: we want to encourage everyone who lives within the Barony of Atenveldt, whether they participate in the SCA through a large or small household or as individuals to view the Barony as theirs. We want to try and set hearts afire with the joy of combat, arts, display, courts, wars and all the other facets of the SCA. We hope to be the local focus of a Kingdom enthusiasm. We want to support the Crown and the people so that together we can all look back at this challenging period as one of the best times we can remember. 14 Unto Their Majesties Walrick and Cecilia, Their Highnesses Craven and Elzbieta, and the populace of the Barony of Atenveldt do we, Lady Damaris Baroid and Lord Roland de Laon, send greetings. With this letter we express our wish to be considered as candidates for the position of Baron and Baroness of the Barony of Atenveldt. Being current paid members of the SCA, residing in zip code which is assigned to the Barony of Atenveldt, we understand that this letter will be published in the May Palm Prints. We both fully understand the responsibilities of the position of Baron and Baroness and are willing to commit to a full three year term should we be selected. Lady Damaris and Lord Roland have been active in the Barony and Kingdom of Atenveldt for the past seven years. We have both served as Baronial Greater officers, Damaris as Chronicler and Roland as Seneschal for 2 years. We have also served in Deputy and Emergency Deputy positions. Lady Damaris is a past Baronial Arts and Sciences Champion, holds the Purpure Clarion and the Palm of Atenveldt. She has also been awarded the Fleur de Soleil of the Kingdom, and is a teacher of arts, including bobbin lace, inkle weaving, Viking whipcord, lucet and documentation. Lord Roland has been honored with the Palm of Atenveldt, he is well known on the hardsuit field and a strong supporter of the artisan community. We have autocrated and assisted with several events as well as being Deputy Autocrats for Parking at Estrella War XIX and XX. Our reasons for seeking this position are simple; we have a passionate love for Atenveldt, our Barony, the Premier Barony of the Known World and we wish to share our pride with all those who will listen. One of our dreams for this grand Barony is to build friendships while continuing to expand upon the rich and glorious heritage of the oldest Barony in the Known World. Communication is the cornerstone of that plan. We wish to hold relaxed informal Town hall type conversations where the populace could sit and chat with us one on one about their concerns or ideas regularly as well as continuing to utilize the Palm Prints, populace meetings, and other modern communication mediums. Since this year is the 40 th Anniversary of the Barony, we would encourage the populace to explore with us the history and stories of our past. We invite the populace to approach us with any questions or concerns you may have. While we may have a dream and a plan, ultimately it takes all of us to make it happen and we would be remiss if we did not take the Barony s needs or concerns into consideration.
