ANSTEORRAN GAZETTE ILoI No. 10, Vol AS XLIV, October 2009 The Ansteorran Gazette is the official Monthly publication of the College of Heralds of the Kingdom of Ansteorra. It is not a publication of the Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. nor does it delineate corporate SCA policies. Contents copyrighted 2009Society for Creative Anachronism except those contributions where copyright expressly retained by the individual author. For information on reprinting articles and artwork from this publication, please contact the editor (Obelisk Herald) who will assist you in contacting the original creator of the piece. Please respect the legal rights of our contributors. Greetings! Letter from Star Principal Herald As we near November, I'd like to remind all of my regional heralds that we should be running consultation tables at each Coronation. (In the past we've done them at Crown Tourneys as well, but for a variety of reasons have let that lapse.) If you know of an upcoming Coronation in your region, please contact the autocrat and arrange for space for the consultation table! Submissions are NOT required to be taken at these tables, but if not please do make sure that clients have all the information they need to continue pursuing their submission through their local branch. As a reminder, every region should have at least one consultation table per year. If you've never run or worked one before, don't panic! They're not as difficult as you might think, and there are plenty of heralds who are willing to help out. myself or the heralds mailing list, and just ask. One of the items every herald at any level should be reading regularly is the Cover Letter (CL) of the LoAR (Letter of Acceptances and Returns). The LoAR comes out roughly monthly, and is a listing of all submitted items that were accepted or returned. It can be found at or you can receive it via (visit and scroll down to the bottom of the page for more information). The Cover Letter frequently contains items of interest to the consulting herald. For example, the May 2009 CL has this to say: From Pelican: No More SCA-Compatibility On the May 2008 Cover Letter, we ruled: Therefore, as of the May 2009 decisions meetings, we declare that no new name elements or name patterns will be ruled SCA-compatible, that all names previously ruled SCA-compatible are no longer SCA-compatible and that in order for them to be registered, documentation meeting the same standards as for non-sca-compatible names will be required. This ruling went into effect with this, the May 2009 Pelican meeting. I strongly encourage heralds to go look up the May 2008 CL, and the other earlier Cover Letters also mentioned, to better understand what this means. Comment by Tostig Logiosophia on 2009/07/02 17:20:38: The Letter of Permission clears the closest I found to conflict. Comment by Hedwig von Luneborg on 2009/07/27 22:09:48: I found no conflicts now that the letter of permission has been added to her documents. 4 4 Device: Return for further work. Conflict with Caitlyn Emrys (9508N), Vert, a chevron between three peacocks pavonated to base argent; Harrys Rob of Wamphray (9602N), Vert, a chevron between three winged spurs argent; Tangwystyl verch Morgant Glasvryn (0107W), Vert, a chevron between three falcons argent. In each case there is but a single CD, for the change to the type of the secondary charges. This complete redesign was returned at kingdom July 2006 for conflict with Charles. This permission should clear the problems. Device: Forward to Laurel. 2. Cathal Finn Ó Briain. (Elfsea, Barony of) New Device. Argent, a semy of lozenges within a bordure sable. Comment by Tostig Logiosophia on 2009/07/02 17:34:24: A semy of lozenges was registered as recently as June 2005 ("Argent semy of lozenges azure." Atlantia, Badge for Order of the Opal). No conflicts observed for any number of lozenges, including the field division lozengy. Comment by Gawain of Miskbridge (Green Anchor Herald) on 2009/08/02 19:24:31: Argent semy of lozenges, a bordure sable. Semy is an adjective, not a noun. No conflicts found. Device: Forward to Laurel. Argent semy of lozenges, a bordure sable. 3. Cherish Otte. (Stargate, Barony of) Resubmitted Device. Per fess indented argent and sable, in chief a lozenge sable, in base a rabbit couchant argent. Comment by Tostig Logiosophia on 2009/07/02 15:04:09: Last edited on 2009/07/02 15:13:19 Consider the blazon "Per fess indented argent and sable, a lozenge and a rabbit couchant counterchanged." In chief/base or in pale need not be specified in a per fess field division. The reasons for return have been addressed. The line of divison lies evenly on both sides of the guide marks. Still no conflicts observed. Comment by Emma de Fetherstan on 2009/07/27 17:54:18: Name was registered by Laurel in April Comment by Hedwig von Luneborg on 2009/07/27 22:12:53: Other than the rabbit looking rather too modern for my eyes I find no conflicts and the redraw looks to have solved the problem for the return. Comment by Gawain of Miskbridge (Green Anchor Herald) on 2009/08/02 19:25:37: No conflicts found. Device: Forward to Laurel. 4. Cristoffel Muller. (Crown Lands, Southern region) New Name and Device. Azure, grillage Or, on a chief argent two castles gules. Comment by Tostig Logiosophia on 2009/07/02 18:01:22: [Device] Grillage has only been registered once (1994 and reblazoned in 2000), but has also been involved in two returned submissions. The latter are informative. "Alycia Genevive of Amrenth. Device. Argent, a grille and on a cartouche azure, a candle argent enflamed

proper, all within a bordure azure. "REASON FOR RETURN: Our reading of the description in Woodward leads us to believe that a grille, or lattice, is a horizontal form of "fretty." What is drawn here more closely resembles a squared-off form of masoning. To form a grillage, the cross-pieces should be fewer and larger, and should also be fretted. Please have the submitter redraw this as either masoned or a true grillage. If she chooses the latter, she may want to consider making the cartouche a different color, so it stands out better against the background." [LoAR Jan 1986] "Avisa of Dun Carraig. Device. Azure grillagy Or, on a bend sinister argent a branch leaved vert flowered of a daisy azure seeded Or. "Conflict with Corwynn of Thornwood (SCA), Azure, on a bend sinister argent a thorned slip embowed throughout sable. There is a CD for the addition of the grillage, but the only real difference between the tertiaries is the tincture, which is insufficient for the necessary second. "There was a fair bit of discussion as to whether the grillage should be considered as a primiary charge, as is the case with fretty. However, fretty is only considered that way because of evidence that it was an artistic variation of the fret; no such consideration can be given to grillagy, lacking a separate charge, the "grill". As a consequence, it seems the most consistent way to treat grillagy is as we treat other strewn charges and field treatments such as masoned." [LoAR Dec 1994] Assuming it's still considered a field treatment, no conflicts observed. Comment by Magnus on 2009/08/21 18:27:23: Last edited on 2009/08/21 18:39:04 Avisa's device is currently in resubmission in OSCAR. The grillage issues haven't been ruled on yet. All we can do is send it up and wait on rulings. The grillage is needed for the second CD versus William Bauer February of 1997 (via Atenveldt): "Azure, on a chief argent an arrow reversed sable." Comment by Gawain of Miskbridge (Green Anchor Herald) on 2009/08/02 19:26:25: [Name] No conflicts found. [Device] No conflicts found. Name: Forward to Laurel. Device: Forward to Laurel Fronicka Von Bayren. (Elfsea, Barony of) New Name. Comment by Coblaith Muimnech (Orbis Herald) on 2009/07/27 20:23:11: <Fronicka> is listed in the cited article as a feminine given name found once in the record. <Bayren> appears in the cited article only as the modern name of a town from which came some of the individuals mentioned in the tax record that serves as the article's source. In addition to offering no evidence that the place name incorporated into it was used before 1600, the submitter has tendered nothing to support the "von [place name]" construction for the byname. Comment by Gawain of Miskbridge (Green Anchor Herald) on 2009/08/02 19:27:33: The preposition should be von. Comment by Magnus on 2009/08/21 18:55:37: The name should be von Bayern. [October 1995 LOAR, A-Meridies] "Ophelia of Bavaria. The name was submitted as Ophelia aus Bavaria, but Bavaria is the English name of the region, so we have substituted the English preposition to put the locative phrase into a single language. The corresponding German version of the name is Ophelia von Bayern, and a more idiomatic German form is simply Ophelia Bayerin `Ophelia [the] Bavarian woman'." Comment by Mari ingen Briain meic Donnchada (Rowel) on 2009/08/23 04:39:59: Okay. But I think we're still missing support for the capital V in Von, right? She allows minor changes, so this should at least go forward as <von Bayern> if we can't find support for the capital V in Von in

6 period. Comment by Magnus on 2009/08/23 16:24:38: This is the only ruling I could find on the capital von. [December 2005 LoAR, R-Atenveldt] Wilhelm Gebauer Von Stadt Könisberg. Name. No documentation was included and none found that the word Stadt, meaning "city", was used as an element in compound bynames in German. Although cities are often referred to as Stadt Cityname, bynames formed from city names are formed from the city name without the added element stadt. We would drop this element, but the submitter will not allow major changes. There are a few additional minor issues with the name: the locative preposition von should be written in all lowercase instead of the submitted mixed case. Also, the locative Könisberg appears to be a misspelling of the town Königsberg. In resubmitting, the form Wilhelm Gebauer von Königsberg should be registerable. Name: Forward to Laurel. Fronicka von Bayren 6. Geneviève de Lironcourt. (Elfsea, Barony of) New Badge. (Fieldless) A penguin closed to dexter within a tressure azure. Comment by Ioannes Dalassenos on 2009/07/02 00:25:03: Seems a fairly clear violation of VIII.5, the definition of Fieldless Style "A fieldless design must have all its elements conjoined, like the three feathers issuing from a crown used by the Heir Apparent to the throne of England. Since there is no field in such a design, it may not use charges that rely on the edges of the field to define their shape, such as bordures and orles, nor to cut off their ends, such as ordinaries or charges throughout." Comment by Tostig Logiosophia on 2009/07/02 18:35:36: Last edited on 2009/07/08 15:15:31 Concur with Ioannes that "(Fieldless) A penguin close azure, bellied argent, within _ an orle _ azure." violates RfS VIII.5. When redesigning, the submitter should be aware of the lack of contrast between an argent belly on either an argent or ermine field. "Or, a penguin close azure, bellied argent, within _ an orle _ azure." seems clear. Comment by Da'ud ibn Auda (al-jamal Herald) on 2009/07/08 14:49:34: The phrase "a penguin closed" makes me think of nothing so much as a very large book, closed, with the head, wing/flipper, and feet of a penguin sticking out from the pages. The heraldic term for the bird posture is "close"; while "closed" is close, it really isn't quite the same. I found the bird very hard to identify. As others have noted, fieldless badges with more than one charge must have the charges conjoined. Further, a "tressure" (generally in the SCA a single one is blazoned an "orle") takes its shape from the shape of the shield, which a fieldless badge does not have. This alone would be fatal to registration, since the orle would be a different shape depending on whether it was displayed on a square, a rectangle, a roundel, a lozenge, or one of the many possible shield shapes, and there would be no real way to check for conflict against it. (Would it conflict against a bird within an annulet? Well, sometimes, it could. See, that just doesn't work well.) Comment by Tostig Logiosophia on 2009/07/08 15:10:44: <sigh> That _is_ an orle, ain't it? Zipped right through it while researching whether you can blazon the front of a penguin in Society Heraldry. Editing my comments accordingly. Comment by Eirik Halfdanarson on 2009/07/28 16:56:18: I too had problems identifying the bird as a penguin. And as stated by others, fieldless badges can't have tressures on them. Comment by Gawain of Miskbridge (Green Anchor Herald) on 2009/08/02 19:29:36:

7 I think this cartoon penguin has little to do with period heraldry. Others at the meeting were not so critical. They did agree that its argent belly needs to be blazoned. A tressure is a diminutive of an orle, and we don t blazon diminutives of ordinaries except when there are more than one. Unfortunately an orle is defined by the shape of the field, just like a bordure, so it cannot exist on a fieldless badge. Perhaps we could call it a billet voided? The posture is close, not closed. Of course that s all trumped by the fact that all the charges on a fieldless badge must be conjoined. Comment by Magnus on 2009/08/21 21:37:33: Last edited on 2009/08/21 22:28:28 Also a penguin is one step from period practice. This is a badge resubmission not a new badge. [August 2003 LoAR R-Ansteorra] Geneviève de Lironcourt. Badge. (Fieldless) A lozenge sable. Conflict with the badge of Solveig Gunnadóttir ór Úlfey, Per pale Or and argent, a lozenge sable. There is only one CD, for fieldlessness. Badged: Returned because you are not allowed to have disconnected elements on a fieldless badge. Further a tressure is defined by the edge of the field and this does not have one. 7. Grishka Kravtsovich. (Bryn Gwlad, Barony of) New Name and Device. Per bend gules and argent, a threaded needle bendwise Or and a feather bendwise azure. Comment by Tostig Logiosophia on 2009/07/03 07:46:28: [Device] No conflicts observed due to an unusally high complexity (4 tinctures, 2 charges and non-standard orientation) for primary charge only armory. It's registerable, but a simpler design would have been better period style. Comment by Da'ud ibn Auda (al-jamal Herald) on 2009/07/08 14:50:11: It should be noted in the blazon that the needle is "threaded". Comment by Gawain of Miskbridge (Green Anchor Herald) on 2009/08/02 19:32:08: [Name] This smells like a patronymic to me. Paul s article from which it s taken warns that some of the names may in fact be patronymics. Unbegaun, p.119, gives Kravtsov as a surname meaning tailor. No conflicts found. [Device] One assumes that he knows the significance of the blue feather in a Society context. Comment by Coblaith Muimnech (Orbis Herald) on 2009/08/05 06:24:50: The submitter is, indeed, well aware of House Blue Feather and its badge. Comment by Magnus on 2009/08/21 21:45:51: Last edited on 2009/08/21 22:07:17 [Name] Paul Wickenden of Thanet, "A Dictionary of Period Russian Names", 3rd edition (Normal, Illinois: SCA, Free Trumpet Press West, 2000). s.n. Grigorii - Grishka first half of the 13th century. s.n. Kravets - Pats: Levon Kravtsovich from Name: Forward to Laurel. Device: Forward to Laurel. 8. John of Severn. (Bryn Gwlad, Barony of) New Badge. Azure, a lion passant and a chief embattled argent. Comment by Tostig Logiosophia on 2009/07/02 14:33:30: Closest found was 2 CD clear versus "Azure, a winged cat passant and a bordure embattled argent." (Kaellyn mac Dermott of Leinster, Device, Nov 2003) for change of type of peripheral from bordure to chief and removal of the wings. "[Per pale sable and vert, a catamount rampant contourny argent spotted sable within an orle argent.] This is clear of Arian Rose of Nairn, as reblazoned elwhere on this letter: Vert, a winged lion segreant to sinister, between its forepaws a rose, all within an orle argent. There is one CD for removing the wings from the lion, and one CD for removing the rose from the design. Arian's old blazon did not mention the wings on the lion, which led commentors to believe this was also a conflict." [Sonja Ryzaja, LoAR 06/2004, East-R]

8 Very nice. Comment by Gawain of Miskbridge (Green Anchor Herald) on 2009/08/02 19:32:59: No conflicts found. Badge: Forward to Laurel. 9. Kilyan Von Morgarten. (Elfsea, Barony of) Resubmitted Name Change. Comment by Coblaith Muimnech (Orbis Herald) on 2009/07/19 23:46:15: Last edited on 2009/08/05 06:36:00 The URL associated with "Kilyan" in this submission is incorrect. It should be names/german/kulmbach1495.html. Of course, it should also be accompanied by a summary of the relevant information found on that page. Specifically, the article is Aryanhwy merch Catmael's "German Names from Kulmbach, 1495". The author cites her source as, "a list of returns from Kulmbach for the Gemeine Pfennig of 1495". "Kilgan" appears once in the data as a masculine given name. The author indicates she believes it may be a transcription error, and that the original record might instead have contained "Kilyan". Talan Gwynek describes "Kilian" as "the usual German form of Irish Cilléne" and comments, "St. Kilian was widely venerated in Germany...," in his "Notes on Surnames in German Names from Kosice, ", at The submitter is apparently concerned with keeping the spelling he's proposed for at least some part of the name, though, so that might not be especially relevant. (It would've been nice if he'd specified whether it's "Kilyan", "Von Morgarten", or both that he's unwilling to see changed.) The submitter has offered no documentation at all for the byname. There's not even any evidence, here, that the mentioned town exists--just a bare assertion. And if there *were* evidence of the town, it still wouldn't be evidence of the PLACE NAME, which is what we need for a constructed locative. Nor is the assumption that "Von [placename]" is the correct form for such a locative backed up by anything. There is an image in the Wikimedia Commons purported to be from the Berner Schilling (a Swiss illustrated chronicle penned between 1474 and 1483 by Diebold Schilling the Elder--Hs. Ms. A5 in the collection of the Central Library in Zurich) that seems to include this spelling. If confirmation could be found that the image is from that source, it would be compelling evidence. It is located at File:Morgarten_Schilling.jpg. I assume the other Swiss illustrated chronicles also mention the Battle of Morgarten, so a 15th- or 16th-century spelling for the place name should be available in a facsimile edition of any of them. Kathleen M. O'Brien's "Period Name Construction" is cited as support for the "von [placename]" construction in a recent Ansteorran Letter of Intent, available at I see no reason it couldn't be cited again...though there is no information on where it is published in the LoI in question. and whether it supports an upper-case "V" on "Von" I can't say. Comment by Gawain of Miskbridge (Green Anchor Herald) on 2009/08/02 19:35:02: Von is not normally capitalized in a name. From the September, 2005 LoA&R, Submitted as Johannes von Margarten, the submitter requested authentcity for the 12-15th C. The documentation submitted for Margarten was a map of the Swiss confederation; unfortunately, the map was somewhat out of focus, and could show Morgarten or Margarten. A search of Registra Imperii ( shows eight examples of Morgarten in the submitter's desired period and none of Margarten. Although the Registrii Imperii does normalize the spellings, this still strongly suggests that Morgarten is the appro-

priate form. Therefore, we have changed the spelling to Johannes von Morgarten to match the available documentation -- Comment by Magnus on 2009/08/21 22:53:22: [December 2005 LoAR, R-Atenveldt] Wilhelm Gebauer Von Stadt Könisberg. Also, the locative Könisberg appears to be a misspelling of the town Königsberg. In resubmitting, the form Wilhelm Gebauer von Königsberg should be registerable. Since no changes are allowed this may get the name returned for capitalizing the Von. Comment by Tostig Logiosophia on 2009/08/23 17:51:30: Although the ILoI list no minor changes, it also specifies change for spelling. Is there a typo or do we have a confused submittor? Name: Returend for lack of documentation for the Capitalization of Von. As the submitter specifically states no major or minor changes are allowed we are not able to change it to von Loch Soilleir, Barony of. (Loch Soilleir, Barony of) New Badge. Argent, a tankard sable within a sea serpent in annulo head to chief and vorant of its own tail vert. Comment by Tostig Logiosophia on 2009/07/03 07:50:19: Consider versus "Argent, a cup sable with ribbons issuant from its mouth gules within an orle of grapevine proper." (Ania Dahlbergh, Device, February 1996). I see a CD for change of type from an orle of grapevine proper to a sea serpent in annulo... vert, but am hesitant to say there's a 2nd for the change of arrangement. further, I don't think ribbons have the visual weight of a maintained charge needed to merit a CD, nor do I think there's a CD for a cup versus a tankard. Comment by Gawain of Miskbridge (Green Anchor Herald) on 2009/08/02 19:38:51: Last edited on 2009/08/02 19:39:47 We reached much the same conclusions regarding this potential conflict: snake vs. vine, yes; in annulo vs. orle, maybe; tankard vs. cup, probably no; ribbons, maintained, so no. Comment by Magnus on 2009/08/22 14:44:30: The conflict issues with this one need to be reviewed at Laurel and OSCAR. Badge: Forward to Laurel noting the potential conflict. We are not at the level to be able to make a definitive decision on it. 11. Robert Otte. (Stargate, Barony of) Resubmitted Device. Per fess indented argent and sable, in chief a lozenge sable, in base a natural tiger couchant contourney argent marked sable sinister. In chief/base or in pale need not be specified in a per fess field division. The reasons for return have been addressed. The line of divison lies evenly on both sides of the guide marks. Markings have been added to the base side of the beast. Still no conflicts observed. I see it as 2 CD clear of Cherish Otte above (#3) with changes to 1/2 the type and 1/2

the orientation of the primary charge group. A note that there is a Letter of Permission to Conflict (From ILoI Oct 2008 #10), however, should be mentioned to be on the safe side at the Laurel level. Comment by Emma de Fetherstan on 2009/07/27 18:00:12: This name was registered by Laurel in April Device: Forward to Laurel. Per fess indented argent and sable, a lozenge and a natural tiger couchant contourny counterchanged Robin of Gilwell. (Steppes, Barony of the) New Augmentation of Arms. Ermine, on a chief double-arched to base gules, a mustache Or and for augmentation on a double rose sable and Or, in honor point a mullet of five greater and five lesser points sable. Comment by Tostig Logiosophia on 2009/07/02 14:56:32: Last edited on 2009/07/03 14:33:08 [Administrative] His device was registered in July of 1981 and reblazoned in November of 1995 as "Ermine, on a chief double-arched to base gules a mustache Or." Augmentation of Arms was granted [Augmentation] Consider the reblazon "Ermine, on a chief double-arched to base gules, a mustache Or, augmented in honor point with a double rose sable and Or charged with a mullet of five greater and five lesser points sable." A year ago the submitter expressed a preference for the blazon pattern "in honor point" over "in chief". I personally agree in this instance. An augmentation using the phrase "in honor point" seems appropriate. Being a fur, the field is a single layer. Augmenting the field with a charged charge then does not violate the layer limit. The ermine spots are small, but seem identifiable on close examination. The augmentation itself is also small but identifiable. I would prefer it drawn larger, but it seems about the same size as cadency marks in period rolls. Comment by Da'ud ibn Auda (al-jamal Herald) on 2009/07/08 14:55:06: The rose is actually _larger_ than many of the cadency marks I have seen in English heraldry. Comment by Da'ud ibn Auda (al-jamal Herald) on 2009/07/08 14:53:36: It is the rose which is in honor point, not just the tertiary mullet. Blazon fu: "... for augmentation in honor point on a double rose sable and Or a mullet of five greater and five lesser points sable." Comment by Gawain of Miskbridge (Green Anchor Herald) on 2009/08/02 19:42:04: Last edited on 2009/08/02 19:42:54 We all agree that the augmentation needs to be drawn larger: with the five-fold symmetry of both rose and mullet, the latter looks like mere internal detailing on the rose at this scale. Augmentation: Forward to Laurel. Ermine, on a chief double-arched to base gules, a mustache Or, for augmentation in honor point on a double rose sable and Or a mullet of five greater and five lesser points sable.

Gender: Female. Change for: Language/Culture: Irish 14th-16th c. period. Documentation Provided: <Caitríona> is the standard Early Modern Irish Gaelic form of a feminine given name that appears 16 times in entries relating to the 14th through 16th centuries in the Annals of Ulster, Connacht, Loch Cé, and the Four Masters, according to Mari Elspeth nic Bryan s index of names in Irish annals ( Feminine/Caiterina.shtml). A <Tuathal Ó Máille> is mentioned in an entry related to the 14th century in the Annals of the Four Masters, according to Mari Elspeth nic Bryan s index of names in Irish annals ( AnnalsIndex/Masculine/Tuathal.shtml). In addition, <Ó Máille> is described in Academy of Saint Gabriel Report 1471 ( as a clan name that is a fine choice for a medieval Irish persona. Sharon L. Krossa s Quick and Easy Gaelic Names ( says that a clan affiliation byname using <Ó> and the genitive form of an ancestor s name is masculine, and that the feminine equivalent uses <inghean Uí> instead of <Ó> and lenits the ancestor s name unless it begins with a vowel. The same author s The Spelling of Lenited Consonants in Gaelic ( scotlang/lenition.shtml) indicates the spelling for a lenited m after roughly AD 1200 is mh or m. I therefore believe <inghean Uí Mháille > to be a properly constructed feminine equivalent to <Ó Máille>. [Asterisk Note: all photocopies provided.] 5. Garbhan Kepler.
