1 Ansteorra LoI dated Page 1 of 9 Unto Olwynn Laurel, Aryanhwy Pelican, Istvan Wreath, and the rest of the College of Arms, does Alasdair MacEogan, Bordure Herald, send greetings. It is the intent of the College of Heralds of Ansteorra to register the following items. Unless otherwise noted, the submitter has no desire for authenticity and allows any changes. 1: Alfonso Luis Texen de Saldañas - New Name Change Old Item: Jovianus Skleros, to be released. Submitter desires a masculine name. Language (Spanish) most important. <Alfonso> - Spanish Names from the Late 15th Cent. <Luis> - 16th Cent. Spanish Names by Elsbeth Anne Roth cited 17 times <Texen> - Spanish Names from the Late 15th Cent., Full names of Men. - "Juan Texen (Dexen)" <de Saldañas> - Names in the Memoria de Leonor López de Cordoba, ca Jovianus Skleros was registered in November of 2002 (via Ansteorra). 2: Angelina Falconis - New Name Sound ("Angelina" + "Falconis") most important. <Angelina> - found in Academy of Saint Gabriel report #1679, where it is stated that the name is found in Venetian Crete in the 14th and 15th centuries. <Falconis> - appears 8 times in Juliana de Luna, "Masculine Names from Thirteenth Century Pisa"
2 Ansteorra LoI dated Page 2 of 9 3: Beatrix Alfray - New Name & New Device Quarterly gules and Or, a sun in its splendor counterchanged. Client requests authenticity for 13th - 14th C English. <Beatrix> - Withycombe, s.n. Beatrix dates this form to & <Alfray> - Reaney & Wilson, s.n. Alfrey list "Robery Alfray" in : Caitríona inghean Uí Mháille - New Name Language (Irish 14th-16th c. period.) most important. <Caitríona> is the standard Early Modern Irish Gaelic form of a feminine given name that appears 16 times in entries relating to the 14th through 16th centuries in the Annals of Ulster, Connacht, Loch Cé, and the Four Masters, according to Mari Elspeth nic Bryan's index of names in Irish annals A <Tuathal Ó Máille> is mentioned in an entry related to the 14th century in the Annals of the Four Masters, according to Mari Elspeth nic Bryan's index of names in Irish annals In addition, <Ó Máille> is described in Academy of Saint Gabriel Report as a "clan name" that is "a fine choice for a medieval Irish persona". Sharon L. Krossa's "Quick and Easy Gaelic Names" says that a clan affiliation byname using <Ó> and the genitive form of an ancestor's name is masculine, and that the feminine equivalent uses <inghean Uí> instead of <Ó> and lenits the ancestor's name unless it begins with a vowel. The same author's "The Spelling of Lenited Consonants in Gaelic" indicates the spelling for a lenited "m" after roughly AD 1200 is "mh" or "m". I therefore believe <inghean Uí Mháille > to be a properly constructed feminine equivalent to <Ó Máille>.

7 Ansteorra LoI dated Page 7 of 9 16: Seraphina Maslowska - New Name & New Device Gules, a cross clechy Or, overall a rose argent barbed and seeded proper. Language (Polish) most important. Seraphina - From St. Gabriel's Report 1679 note "Seraphin 1228, 1410, 1478, etc." from the SSNO and "These forms could be feminized by adding <-a>." ACADEMY OF SAINT GABRIEL REPORT 1679 We're not sure where the name <Seraphina> arose. It might derive from a 2nd century martyr [3]. The masculine name <Seraphin> is recorded in 9th century France [2], and a feminine version of this, <Seraphine>, would be plausible in early medieval France. The name was more popular in medieval Italy: There was a Saint Seraphina (usually referred to as Santa Fina) who lived in Italy during the 13th century [1], and there was a 15th century <Blessed Seraphina Sforza> and a 16th century <Saint Seraphin of Montegranaro> [10]. Note that these are modern spellings. The period spellings are probably closer to those illustrated by the masculine examples <Seraffo> and <Serafino>, from Florence in 1427 [12]. In Eastern Europe, the feminine name is recorded in Russia as <Serafima> late in our period [3], and the masculine form was used in Poland [7]: Seraphin 1228, 1410, 1478, etc. Zeraphin 1438 Szeraphim These forms could be feminized by adding <-a>. Maslowska appears to be a feminine form of a Polish surname Maslowski. Note: The submitter marked the form as an appeal of kingdom return but it is more accurately a resubmission of a kingdom return and is thus new to Laurel. 17: Slaine inghean Chuilinn - New Name <Slaine> Feminine Given name dated at <inghean Chuilinn> - Daughter of <Cuilen>/<Cuileann> - Woulfe page 346 s.n.
