From the Seneschal Greetings Rosenfeld! Welcome to our newest Shire participants! Gentles from other SCA groups found their way to our last Populace meeting as well as the Fighter Practice at Bergfeld Park. We are always pleased to have new members in our midst and look forward to learning about their cultures. It s show time Three Commanders is upon us! By the time this issue is published, the planning and organizing will have been completed and all that will be left is to welcome Ansteorra to our fair Shire. Remember to ask for help if you need it and when in doubt, communicate with Lord Ricciardo and/or Lady Eithne. At the September meeting, we discussed our (possible) participation in the Central Regional Rapier Academy scheduled for next Fall. I am pleased to announce that Lady Grainne s proposal was well-received and Rosenfeld has, indeed, chosen to be a part of this event. Additionally, we have agreed to offer a free sideboard luncheon as part of the site fee. Thank you all for your continued support of Rapier activities in the Central Region and the Kingdom as a whole! Additionally, the October Populace is traditionally our wrap-up party for Three Kings. Please plan to attend at 2:00 pm for this all-important review. For those needing reimbursements, please contact Lady Sarah, Rosenfeld Exchequer, if you have any questions about procedures. This is about the time of year we start discussing plans for The Winter Revel, the shire s holiday event centered mainly on Fellowship. It is a time to enjoy each other s company, share musings of the year s events, speak of projects completed as well as those ahead of us, enjoy a sumptuous potluck feast in the evening, and, in general, revel in the Spirit of the Season. If you are interested in coordinating The Winter Revel, please submit your written bid at the October Populace meeting (scheduled for 4:00 pm) and be prepared to present your idea. At minimum, please include your ideas regarding (potential) site information, theme, budget (if you require one) and any planned activities. As this gathering is considered an event, albeit off-calendar, you must be a paid member to be considered as steward. In closing, I would like to thank those who contribute refreshments at our monthly Populace & Potluck. Your hospitality and generosity is greatly appreciated! And remember it is a great opportunity to try out those new recipes! Until we next meet, Julia

From the Exchequer Greetings! Thank you to those who attended the Gate Class held at the September meeting. The Central Regional Exchequer did an awesome job relaying new rules and refreshing old ones. Remember your check requests and receipts as needed for reimbursement of any approved purchases for Three Commanders. In service, Sarah

From the Minister of Arts & Sciences Greetings and Salutations Rosenfeld, I pray this missive finds all of us well and prospering. Certainly we are all excited about 3 Commanders. Our days are full and our hands and minds occupied with the business of making a gleeful event and seeing our friends...though as you are reading we will have had an excellent journey into the dream I am certain. Sewing guild and scribal guild were rescheduled to allow us time to accomplish service and preparation for October First. Individuals in Rosenfeld are, as ever- creating, learning, teaching, and exploring. As agreed I will be report and recognize this month's acheivements in the next issue. Of much interest at the last populace meeting was Lord Adan's AoA from Drachenwald (needing a bit of restoration) which he shared with us. It was beautiful and reflected how original other cultures and kingdoms in our Society may be. Lord Adan expresses a desire to be hands on in Scribal group at the next meeting. Something most assuredly to look forward to is Honorable Lady Carletta's class at the November Populace A & S meeting. She is teaching use of prisma pen art. We shall announce where to get a good price on the pens and everything else will be provided. Meanwhile we savor the marvelous breezes, the warm days and cool evenings and visions, scents and music of autumn coming. Do recall the things for which we have to be grateful and know that I remain most grateful for all of you. Fairfarren! -- Be bestowed with Blessings, Lady Emma Farewyll MoAS of Rosenfeld

From the Chronicler Greetings! I hope this missive finds all of you well and happy. October will be a very busy month for Rosenfeld. Three Commanders is steadily approaching and everything looks to be right on track. I know everyone has worked very hard to make sure this year is great as it always is. A big thanks to our Autocrat s Lady Eithne and Lord Riccardio for all the organizing and open communication. As always please share any interesting or informative articles or pieces that you find to share in our newsletter. In Service, Lady Faina,

From the Knight Marshal From the Deputy Rapier Marshal Greetings! We had a combined official practice during September at Bergfeld Park, where we got 1 adult newcomer into rapier armor, and 2 newcomers into a chivalric rig. We also had a visitor from An Tir who fought rapier with us. We have several new people that have expressed interest in both chivalric and Rapier combat and look forward to having more active practice nights. The unofficial practices are coming back online with 2 last month, and more coming in the next month. Official practice will be on the 17 th. Until next month, Lord Adam of Rosenfeld

ecipe of the Month By Mistress Rhiannon Food and Cooking in Medieval Britain; History and Recipes by Maggie Black. In Medieval times everyone ate pottage, soup, daily. This was broth or stock in which meat and /or vegetables had been boiled, with chopped meat, herbs and very often cereals added to it. The result was a soup- stew. A peasant made do with pease pottage, rather like runny pease pudding. The commonest pottages were vegetable ones, made with green cabbage, lettuce, leeks, lentils, onions and garlic, based on bone stock. 3 1 small bag lentils 4 leeks, rinsed and sliced thin 3 cps meat broth 1 tsp. olive oil Seasoning to taste: salt, pepper, other seasonings 1 lb sliced mushrooms Combine all ingredients except the mushrooms in a large crock pot or stew pot. Cover with additional water or broth. Cook until leeks and lentils are almost done. Add mushrooms about 30 minutes before serving allow to cook through. Can be served in trenchers/bread bowls to sop the broth. This freezes well and travels.

September Populace Meeting Notes Greetings One and All, Our September XLD Populace Meeting was replete with education and organization. One has rarely seen such a cornucopia of feast breads for repast quite hearty (sesame/poppy/sweet yeast rolls and herbal loafs)...there was lentil-leak- and mushroom soup...our monthly meatballs, chicken, swirled macaroni salad and other such delicious treats. We had a member from Shadowlands attending (CJ) who reports she enjoys rapier as well as a myriad of other SCA activities, Adrian McCray a transplant from Drachenwald (Germany) bringing SCA photos from his kingdom there which were amazing: who has jumped into several service activities and exuded enthusiasm., and a beautiful quiet visiting lady whom alas I failed to introduce myself. We had an outstanding gate class this day. All questions were answered with clarity and patience and the handouts provided to everyone made the education easier to grasp. Additionally information provided will make out service more pleasant (have bug spray, drinks, snacks, office supplies etc at hand as you are tied to the area). We are so very grateful to Alasdair for coming all the way to Rosenfeld giving his time to help prepare our shire to effectively manage gate. What lady (or gentleman) does not like to visit merchants upon occasion? This month a couple individuals brought lovely items (fabrics, gowns, books, jewelry) -set up in a side room for shopping during the breaks between meetings and at our leisure. We worked on the detail needs for 3 Commanders, communicated schedules/responsibilities and brainstormed solutions. M'Lady Faina and M'Lord Adam have graciously taken responsibility for Crown Feast, and although no merchants are setting up we shall have a tavern-thus all is well. Shall I mention to visit Faina and Adam to sample their libations? Many are committed to going to Hawkins Saturday the 25th to set up the castle. We are meeting at the shed in Tyler at 8 am that morning - naturally everyone is welcome to lend a hand and many thanks to those who are already serving to prepare and set up the castle for our event. Rosenfeld voted and declined a costly software program-however we agreed to be part of an awesome activity (just wait til you hear how cool it shall be) next year in Augustdetails forthcoming when appropriate in 2011 and/or prior. Scribal Guild is reschedule to October due to proximity of # commanders. Anyone needing scrolls, supplies, information on the original scroll competition or any other A&S related questions please do not hesitate to contact me. Hoping all the days of the month are as terrific for you as this one was for us! -- Be bestowed with Blessings, Lady Emma Farewyll
