Projec. Gives Dropous Aid Home mprovemen Program Trains Unskilled (Edior's Noe: The following aricle is he sixh in a coninuing series of aricles on he nsiue for Research and Social Deevlopmen (SRAD). By JEAN McANDREWS, The UNM-sponsored Home mprovemen Projec (HP) is now in is fourh year, and as L. E. Robers, direcor of HP, says, he fac ha i has lased for so long is evidence of is success. The projec has he elemens of success; i akes high school dropous wihou any paricular skills and rains hem for wo hours a da:y in basic educaional subjecs such as English and mahemaics. For he remaining six hours in he work day h'lly receive on-he-job raining renovaing homes of he poor in Al buquerque. The homeowners supply he building maerial if possible- bu if no, hey may use supplies donaed by Albuquerque businessmen. So far, HP has received abou $40,000 worh of donaed maerials. Two Ceners There are presenly abou 50 workers going hrough raining. The workers, as well as he houses o be improved, are seleced from he povery areas. HP has wo cener-classrooms: one in Arenal and one in San Jose. These communiies, and ohers, handle recruimen of workers, who are paid $.60 an hour. There are hree opions open o workers who have compleed raining: hey can go ino union appreniceship, advanced raining, or direcly ino oher employmen.
