2 Spanish Scenes Evoked Monoya Capures Crowd Wih Flashy, Fiery Music By ED MURPHY Kaimin Reviewer Carlos Monoya capivaed his audience of,700 wih he beauy, fiery passion and happiness of Spain las nigh in he Universiy Theaer. The flash of Spanish gypsies dancing around an open fire could almos be seen as Monoya creaed his musical images. The dancers could be heard samping he inricae rhyhms of flamenco and heir billowing skirs and flashing eyes came o life hrough he musical colors he guiaris creaed. Technically, Monoya was nearly perfec. A imes, he lis ener would swear wo guiars were playing. The aris s fin gers raveled over he srings unil hey became a blur. He would begin a number wih a hree-bea rhyhm, add anoher wih four or six beas, and have wo or hree separae rhyhms going a he same ime wih he individual fingers of his righ hand. He would ap ou an inricae bea on he sounding board of he guiar. He played a imes only wih his lef hand on he neck. The combinaion of hese hings added up o a echnical knowledge of -his insrumen second o none. He began he program wih a number eniled Fiesa. This is a name used by he Spanish gypsies, o describe one of heir dance rhyhms wih several sudden changes. Monoya creaed a sim ple melody wih his righ humb. His fingers produced he'rhyhms. He would weave hem ogeher ino a piece ha seemed fanasic ally difficul and ye, melodically simple. Bulerias, a ypical flamenco dance provided he hrill of he radiional Spanish dance. In his number, he gypsies improvise in exremely fas and ricky rhyhms. The bes number of he evening was Rondena. This is a Cane de Levane, meaning song from he Eas. I is played in a gypsy.one scale differen from he conven ional one used for mos Spanish music. I moved hrough he spec rum of musical emoion srong and aggressive o joyfully playful o sadly pensive. Gaia Gallega, meaning bag pipes from Galicia, a province in norhern Spain where here is a srong Celic influence, picured a complicaed dance done by hese people. Monoya produced a bag pipe effec on he guiar ha was remarkably accurae. The Spanish guiaris received a sanding ovaion a he end of his concer. His firs encore was a musical picure of Seville feauring he sounds of drums and bugles. The marching fee of soldiers could be heard as he drums faded ino he disance. His second encore was his own arrangemen of he familiar Malaguene. Monoya concluded wih an American une, S. Louis Blues* flamenco syle. New I.D. John Highower, execuive di recor of he New York Sae Ars Council, explained New York pro grams and he mehods by which similar programs could be adoped in Monana. He said ha every dollar spen on he ars in New York generaes a reurn of hree o four dollars. James Haughey, a Billings aris and sae senaor, said a fine ars program is necessary for Monana because indusries, when seeking new plan sies, look for he cul ural opporuniies near a pro posed locaion. He also conended ha ouriss seek culure and Mon ana s naural resources alone may no be sufficien ouris draw. Haughey said many of Monana s young people leave he sae be cause of a lack of culural oppor uniy. Members of a seminar on visual ars discussed visual-ar eaching in elemenary and secondary schools and he possibiliy of hir ing ariss as advisers for eaching programs. Firman H. 3 Freeman Sresses Im porance o f U Segmens C ooperaing To he Kaimin: I would like o quesion wo poins in Susan Lawrenz's iner esing sory on he Universiy residens. I do hink sories like his and oher - recen Kaimin pieces are adding finely o our Universiy consciousness. Wihou knowledge and imaginaion for he problems and persons of he pas we live wih a lean confidence in he worh of anyhing communal we migh aemp for he fuure. Mrs. Lawrenz wries abou he urbulence in ha followed on he Librarian s placing Vardis Fisher s ^Passions Spin he Plo on an open reading shelf: Violen objecions from he faculy fol lowed. Presiden Simmons ordered he book removed from he shelf and a revol began. I remember he affair his way: ff-campus persons who learned ha Fisher s book was being com mended o sudens aenion pro esed o he Sae Board of Edu caion. The Sae Board ordered ha book and all such books be removed from he pen Shelf. The Librarian removed all books from he pen Shelf. I was hen ha suden and faculy proes agains he Board s order began. I recall hearing Dr. Swain, he Execuive Secreary of he Board, say ha he order of he Board was un forunae and he hoped i could be forgoen. Bu he fa was in he fire. I all ended only afer mis forune for many Universiy per sons, high and low. The whole business was more complicaed han I have suggesed, bu he crucial error, as I see i, was he Board s aking ino is own hands a siuaion ha ough o have been. handled wihin he Universiy. A he end of her accoun of Presiden McFarland s many con ribuions o he Universiy, Mrs. Lawrenz speaks of his closing he road around he oval, bu says nohing of his closing ou one of he oldes radiions of he Uni versiy, Aber Day. The inegriy of Aber Day had long been in quesion, bu no one had had imaginaion enough o ransform is dying paerns of hard work and good fellowship' ino a new life. Presiden McFarland negoi aed a good rade: for he aban doning of he disrupive Aber Day radiion he secured he spring vacaion, wh i c h immediaely proved o be he refreshing inno vaion he campus needed. The drinking-problem affair of did no work ou so for unaely. Abou his Mrs. Lawrenz says: He (Presiden McFarland) presened he drinking problem on campus o he Missoula Roary Club. Many of he resricions exis oday. I would like o give a differen sress o he affair as I remember i: Presiden McFarland called a faculy meeing in May, 955 o repor on a saemen he had made o he Missoula Roary Club and given o he press ha day on he suden drinking problem on and off campus. He read an elaborae se of regulaions which could be objeced o a a laer public hear ing if necessary. I do no remem ber well he faculy reacion. I have vivid memories of he longlasing resenmen ha moved in he suden body. Presenly he suden officers, wih Gary Jysad as Presiden of ASMSU, se up a large ad hoc commiee o define he sudens hinking on he problem and o ry for a reconsideraion of he regu laions. This commiee invied several faculy members o mee. wih hem, no o guide or suppor hem, bu jus o lisen and say wha hey would. u of hese ar duous meeings came a reques o he Presiden ha he gran he commiee a hearing which he graned. There followed four or five meeings wih he Presiden and various deans and faculy members. And ou of hese mee ings came a grealy whiled-down se of regulaions and a proposal for esablishing some kind of su den board o paricipae in he enforcemen of he new regula ions. Bu i was a soured conclu sion. If only here had been an idea, a radiion, a machinery, for iniia ing he consideraion of a serious problem no in rage bu in he good emper ha marked he final meeings, he ill-sarred Judicial Council would have had a chance o succeed and we migh be well ahead of where we are oday wih procedures for suden adminis raion relaionships. I have reaccened wo of Mrs. Lawrenz s accouns only because hey are vial illusraions of wo imporan poins: ) The members of a governing board of a univer siy mus be persons wih ineres and wisdom enough o become knowledgeable and rusing of he insiuion hey help o govern, and 2) In order o keep a universiy on is high course of sudy and dis covery and creaion, he segmens of he universiy need well-esab lished ways of cooperaion o avoid he conflics ha make up he sad par of Mrs. Lawrenz s sory. The principle underlying i all is no a lae invenion of he New Poliical Lef. I have had he opporuniy o work ou in he field and find ha here is lile correlaion be ween he maer deal wih in social welfare classes and he skills and knowledge required o work in an agency. I am furher dismayed when I peruse he curren Universiy ca alog and see he changes ha have been made in he Social Welfare major since I sared as a fresh man. The previous major was a comprehensive one encompassing poliical science, hisory, econom ics, a foreign language, sociology, psychology and anhropology. As i is now he only requiremens for a major are cerain social welfare courses, Anhropology 252, he group requiremens, and enough credis o qualify for a degree.
