1 ---- Vol. XII, No. 28 an independen suden newspaper serving nore dame and s. mary's Thursday, Ocober 6, 1977 Former NO physician commis suicide SOUTH BEND* Ind. (AP)-Laerile proponen Dr. Helen Calvin was pronounced dead bu life suppor sysems were lef aached unil her kidneys were removed for possible ransplan. Dr. Calvin was a pracicing physician a he Nore Dame Infirmary hrough he Spring of S. Joseph Couny Depuy Coroner Louis rwinski, who ruled he deah a suicide due o depression, said he 49 year-old physician was ruled dead a 10:15 a.m. afer hree docors a Memorial Hospial agreed ha her brain was dead. Brain wave ess had shown no signs of life in wo days, he said. rwinski said he physical cause of deah was massive brain damage due o loss of blood. Laer yeserday, surgeons removed Dr. Calvin's kidneys. In 1972, she had donaed her body o he Indiana Universiy Medical Dep. book budges 'relaively small' Cener a Indianapolis. Afer deermining ha he kidneys were usable, hey were ranspored o Indianapolis by Ronald Philo, chid of he organ ransplanaion secion a Indianapolis' Veerans Adminisraion Hospial. Physicians a he medical cner wouldn' know if here ' are appropriae ransplan recipiens unp oday, Dr. Philo said. The vicim's husband, Dr. 0. Waler Calvin, charged ha Food and Drug Adminisraion (FDA) invesigaions of his wife's cancer paiens were among he facors ha led o her faal acion las Friday. His wife had been depressed over marial problems, Dr. Calvin added, in addiion o he pressure of working wih enninally ill cancer paiens. She had been lised in criical condiions since being hospialized Friday. Dr. Calvin old police he found his wife locked in he office a heir home, her lef wris cu and bleeding. by Parick Cole Special Projecs Edior Edior's noe: This is he hird aricle of a four-par series examining he availabiliy of books in he Memorial Library o sudens in he Nore Dame-S. Mary's communiy. Today's sory will deal wih how books are ordered. Tomorrow's sory will illusrae he plans and ideas concerning he improvemen of he library. In his age of he "knowledge explosion," new informaion is being learned and published a unprecedened levels. The Nore Dame Library has he ask each year of bringing in new books o he Universiy libraries. The ordering of new books is done by he collecion developmen deparmen. Maureen L. leason, responsible for book requess, said ha from July 1976 o June 1977, he library ordered 16,560 new books. The collecion developmen deparmen did no exis unil Ocober Bu he deparmen is responsible for ordering books ha are used for eaching faculies and specialized works for research. leason said ha money for books is divided up by deparmens. "Bu he budges are relaively small," she indicaed. "Bu I'm involved in he ordering of books, no he selecion of hem.'' The oal fund for he purchase of books is $600,000. This includes money for periodicals, serials and subscripions. Is he money enough? ''Some deparmens run ou of money and we have o reurn he orders,'' leason said. For he Deparmen of English, he book budge has been $11,000 No bones abou i: This bone may have been found in S. Mary's Lake. [Phoo by jane Carroll]. o $12,000, according o Prof. Edward Vasa, he deparmen chairman. Bu, he adds, he English deparmen's book budge was $14,500 per year from 1967 o Does he decrease of $2,000- $3,000 sill leave enough money for he deparmen? "Righ now, we have enough money o buy only abou one-hird of he books ha we ough o be buying," Vasa said. "Tha has hur us a grea deal. So i really akes hree years o buy he books ha should have been bough in one year, and when you do buy hose, you have anoher wo years o cach up wih'', he added. leason revealed ha he library receives special collecions of books. Collecions usually conain valuable books or specialized works in a given subjec. "Bu collecions are negoiaed by he Universiy and he Library Adminisraion," leason said. "They also have endowmen funds and gif donaion,'' she noed. ''And he library has been geing some of his. Some of his money goes o he purchased book fund. Bu no money comes ou of he book fund for special collecions.'' Among he collecions ordered recenly are he Spors and ames Collecion, he Sevens Collecion from he Episcopal Seminary in Philadelphia and he Cara Collec- ion for research in he aposolae which includes African maerials. Liaisons leason said ha he faculy liaisons, usually a member of he library, suggess o a eaching deparmen books o be ordered. Each liaison is assigned o a cerain deparmen in each college of he Universiy. However, here are some drawbacks in he sysem. "I don' ge much feedback from he deparmens regarding books,'' remarked Sephen Hayes, a liaison for he deparmens of sociology and psychology. "Wih he psychology deparmen, I have conac wih hem abou every hree monhs. Wih he sociology deparmen, i's abou once a monh. Bu liaison work is relaively new,'' he concluded. Hayes explained ha his basis of knowing wha books o order is ha ''he knows wha books are used for courses." And, he said, "I know wha books are used for eaching. I don' make disincions beween undergraduae and graduae sudens. A faculy member wih a research projec has more experise o order more specialized maerial." Some liaisons complain ha a imes books are ordered which are no needed. "Faculy members migh be over-ordering for research," said one liaison. "The deparmen's faculy liasons haven' been conrolling wha he people order,'' said a library saff worker. ''And in he pas years, i's happened, oo. The faculy will order suff for heir research bu i is of no value o he sudens." If books are o be of any use o he sudens, hey mus have access o hem, Hayes complains. "And if he sudendoesn' have he research skills, here should be a librarian here o help hem. Sudens are lined up during final and you do' have he ime o answer heir quesions in deph!' JnerUbrary loan Wha if any of he Nore Dame libraries do no have a book waned by a faculy member or suden? Books can be borrowed from oher college libraries hrough he inerlibrary loan deparmen. According o Carmela Kinslow, who is in charge of inerlibrary loan, he deparmen provides maerial for he faculy, sudens, Ph.D. candidaes and Maser's degree candidaes. Eu Kinslow said he aciviies of he inerlibrary loan deparmen have been increasing laely. "There's been a gradual increase in he borrowing," she said. "I don' know wheher his shows a deficiency, because we don' have he budge of a Harvard or a Yale.'' Inerlibrary loan saisics show ha by deparmen, he English and hisory deparmens have had relaively high raes for loans. In he school year, he hisory deparmen had 135 loans, he heology deparmen had 122, and he English deparmen had 118. In , he Biblical Insiue led all loaners wih 184 requess and he economics deparmen had 167. The hisory and English deparmens followed wih 166 requesl and 143 respecively. [coninued on page 3] Dr. Helen Calvin An FDA spokesman said a series of inerviews conduced wih Mrs. Calvin's laerile paiens were rou. ine and were no an aemp o remove her license. "Everyhing she had done was oally legal," he said. "There were no prosecuion effors agains her by he FDA ha I know of.'' Paul Ragan, a FDA aorney, said he was disressed a he news of Mrs. Calvin's condiion, adding, "She was one ofhe few physicians who sincerely believed in laerile. She was no moivaed by he chance of amassing grp.a wealh like many oher docors, ' 'who, are adminisering he purpored ani cancer subsance, n he said. _ Ragan's remarks came in response o claims by Dr. Calvin ha he FDA probes were effors o gaher evidence aimed a revoking his wife's medical license. Ragan admied FDA agens have been conacing Dr. Calvin's paiens, bu said such inerviews were for he sole purpose of follovying cour direced procedures and o preclude he possibiliy of fraud in he imporaion of laerile from Tiiuana, Mexico. The FDA lawyer said sch inerviews have been conduced wih laerile paiens hrough' ou he counry and ha srong evidence of fraud has been found only on he Wes and Eas coas. "To our knowledge, no evidence of fraud has been uncovered in he midwes," Ragan said. Mrs. Calvin was openly imporing laerile from Mexico, conending ha federal cour decisions gave her ha righ. No challenge had been made o Mrs. Calvin' & claim.

In his sense. Nore Dame is quie unique among colleges and universiies in he Unied Saes. In fac. if here were such a hing as a naional spors rivia cones beween suden bodies of colleges and universiies. 1 am sure ha Nore Dame would come ou on op. Do you consider yourself a spors rivia exper? Do you long for ha chance where you can someday show off your spors knowledge in fron of housands? Do you have enough confidence in yourself and your spors knowledge o mach wis wih he likes of Bill Mazer. Dick Enberg or even Howard Cosell? Well, here's your chance o prove yourself. Le's cover some of he more popular areas of spors rivia ofen raised in discussions. I don' claim o be an exper myself bu always find i enjoyable o ry my knowledge agains anyone. One of my favories concerns a picher who recenly reired wih more han 200 career vicories alhough he never had a 20-win season. Wha was he number and wha are heir names? Wha numbers did he former ahlees wear? Don Merdidih, Dallas Cmvboys quarerback; Jerry Wes, L.A. Laker guard; Dick Hukus. Chicago Bear linebacker; Bill Russell. Basen Celic cener; And Jean Beliveau. Monreal Canadien cener. I's always ineresing o ry and place ahlees wih he colleges hey aended. Try guessing wha colleges he following fooball and baskeball players wen o: Jo Jo Whie. Bosen Celic guard; Roger Sauback, Dallas Cowboys quarerback; Ken Sabler. The shorsop was he A.L. MVP ha year. If you can' ge ha one hen ry o name fl,ur grea running backs who came ou of Syracuse Universiy. Who was on deck when Bobby Thomson hi his pennan-clinching homer for he New York ians in 1951? Who was on he Mound? Wha was his picher's uniform number? Who was he ian's hird base coach a he ime? Who really cares? Name he AFL quarerback ha once passed for over 4,000 yards in one season? Wha eam did Wil Chamnberlain once score 100 poins again:: in an NBA game? Who was he firs NHL player o score 50 goals during he regular season? The answers o hese and muliudes of oher spors rivia quesions coninue o be a popular source of debae among spors fanaics. especially here a Nore Dame. Wha is your favorie rivia quesion?
