2 UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN LAW SCHOOL \Sepember 29, 1977 Grievance Commiee Repors Wha's Been Bohering You Las spring he LSSS esablished a Grievance commiee as par of an aemp o increase boh communicaion and resoluion of he problems exising in he Law School. In order o channel our effors o he areas of greaes need, a survey was circulaed among he sudens. A brief summary of he highlighs is repored below, bu he more exensive resuls are available on reserve a he library. The mos prevalen gripe concerned he faciliies of he school. Niney-seven of he 200 responses complained of he problem of "groupies" in he library. Many ohers complained of mainenance of he buildings, paricularly he resrooms and lounges. Moreover, he need for more faciliies such as vending machines, lunch space, kichen faciliies, ec., was ofen cied. On he academic side, many course areas were called for o increase he variey of elecives, such as menal healh law, spors law and pension plans. Also, many complained of he serious lack of academic counseling and he overlap of class schedules. The Adminisraion received several complains as being unresponsive o sudens, alhough boh Dean Ecklund and he Placemen Office were praised for heir effors. The ofen discussed problem of lack of variey in inerviewers was menioned as was he need for employmen counseling. The LSSS received is share of criicism wih mos airmed a poor planning, iming, or lack of variey in social aciviies. Anoher group earning many complains was he Res Gesae for being "unresponsive o suden needs for a newspaper.'' One of he heavies arges was Case Club. There was a wide variey in he grievances wih everyhing from lack of insrucion o he pass-fail grading sysem o he Senior Judge selecion receiving noice. We are now in he process of seing up procedures o channel grievances o he mos appropriae office. There is also a commiee which will hear and ac on cerain issues presened. Anyone ineresed in working wih his group please sop by he LSSS office as soon as possible. Also, hose wih grievances or suggesions, please feel free o sop by and le us know of he siuaion. INSIDE THE RES GESTAE Our crusading rabbi gives you an opporuniy o muilae he RG wih his firs (and las) fold-in page 3 Huchin's Heroes are found oday on page 5 Wha is Punk Rock? page5 And due o he fall elecions for LSSS campaign saemen from he candidaes for Secreary and he firs year spos for Senaor are scaered hroughou Also his week he RG adds he menu for he Lawyers Club page 7 Day-Old Bread by Seve Feer When Sue Segal used hose words o describe he firs few weeks of second-year Law, I realized ha ha was he bes way o sum i up--and when furher complains on he same subjec o my old junior clerk were me wih her opinion ha hird-year was even worse, I decided, so wha if i's a lile sale--maybe if I oas i and pu some jam on i, i will ase jus fine. So, here I am, looking back a firs-year--like a new loaf of bread--fresh, appeizing, and asy... while living second-year--like day-old bread--sill useful, bu no very--and who knows, maybe nex year I' II be back wih Bread Crumbs--a.k.a. for he birds. So wih a birdseye view of he siuaion, I will aemp o alernaely ake poshos or give pas on he back o he u-m Law School, Dean Susan Eklund (I love her like he siser I never had), groupies, dull classes (ciaions omied), Cooley case club, Tom Green's pe ca Sappho, and anyone else whose name has ever appeared in a leerhead. Jus be sure o always remember how he lae Vince Lombardi once summed up law school in general: "Everyhing you see here, everyhing you hear here, everyhing you do here, says here when you leave here!'' LOCUSTS INVADE UTAH; INTERVIEWERS COME TO U-M LAW SCHOOL Perhaps he bigges difference beween firs and second year is in he area of job inerviews. For many i is a ime of grea rauma, bu for me, a once-proud radio-tvfilm major, you migh say "I've heard i all before." I've been urned down by he grea--roone Arledge of ABC Spors (1974), MGM, and The New York Times- he no-so-grea--he producers of MASH who wouldn' consider me as a replacemen for Wayne Rogers, Roane Arledge of ABC (See Bread, page 3)

I feel I can provide his along wih he accompanying deerminaion o see suden paricipaion, inpu, and ideas injeced ino he Suden Senae. I am confiden ha my wo years in suden governmen a Wayne Sae Universiy, my paricipaion as represenaive a he Governor's Leadership Council and as represenaive for he Presiden's Council on he Saus of Women, along wih wo year's experience working on he Markeing and Adverising Budge for Michigan's fifh larges Savings and Loan Associaion will provid_e me--wilhe ski lis necessary o effecively carry ou he responsibiliies associaed wih he Campaign Saemens office of secreary of he Law School Suden Senae. VICKI LAFER for SECRETARY Hi. My name is Vicki Laer and for hose of you who don' know me, I'm a summer sarer (1977) and I'm very ineresed in suden governmen a his law school. In he course of my peiioning, several people ried o convince me ha I mus be absoluely nus o 1) wan o do anyhing bu sudy during my firs year of law school 2) wan o have anyhing a all o do wih Suden Senae which is o many people jus a bunch of garbage. Well, I would like o reply o hese unavailing pleas from my peers. Firs of all, I hink ha law school gives us all enough grief wihou our limiing our exisence wihin he four walls of he library. In order for me o reain my saniy, I n.eed o hink abou somehing oher han wheher I have a coningen remainder in some esae in Kansas, Secondly, suden senae is essenially he only I iason ha we sudens have wih he adminisraion. If any changes are o ake place, hey almos have o be done hrough he Senae. So, in essence, Senae can be a very effecive vehicle for change in his law school. I am paricularly ineresed in he clinics (or lack of) offered here. Anoher area of my ineres is financial aid (especially since I was cu ou of his program his year!) If eleced, I will be he only firs year suden on he execuive board of he Senae and hope o bring o he Senae alo of fresh new ideas. See you a he polls! Vicki Laber Secion 1 MARKJ. EBY Wha firs year sudens need in he Suden Senae is someone o suppor and asser heir ineress in a manner which reflecs favorably on he class as a whole. Such a job calls for a person wih a background in suden governmen. As an undergraduae, I served in several governmenal capaciies, including he suden federaion (he campus governmen). Consequenly, I am familiar wih he procedure of suden governmen and am accusomed o working wih leaders on programs and maers of policy. As a resul, I feel ha I can more han adequaely represen he views of he firs year sudens in he LSSS and ha I can serve our ineress well in ha forum. ALAN D. WALTON Because we have been on campus for only hree weeks, i is difficul o idenify any major issues ha may exis. As we sele ino life a he Law School hough, problems will develop ha will need he aenion of compeen represenaion. There are several asses ha I have o offer which qualify me o be ha represenaive. My undergraduae involvemen in campus governmen included being a Suden Senaor for wo years, a member of he Board of Regens Suden Affairs Commiee, and a Dormiory Governor. My residence in he Lawyers Club will keep me ouch wih imporan maers as hey develop. This also means ha I will be wihin easy access o consiuens virually all of he ime. There are wo maers which I hope o ac on immediaely as a senaor. Firs is o adverise he meeing imes and places beer, and o have he resuls of hem published. Second, is o aemp o eiher change he hours for lunch a he Lawyers Club, or o have fewer large classes mee from 11 o 12. So I wen ino he inerviews wih an overflowing resume (wach where you sep), an undernourished ranscrip, and a "joie de vie" ha Mony Hall made a living wih. And where has i goen me--well, le 's jus say hey're piching a no-hier, bu he weak par of heir order is coming up.,for example:. jf- Overseas Privae Invesmen Corp. came a week earlier han any of he oher firms, so I decided ha I could benefi from some spring rai ning--work on '" my anecdoes before he conenders come o own. 5 Page 4 Campaign Saemens consider my candidacy for he posiion of Law School Suden Senaor. Secion 2 M. FRANKLIN NICHOLS Ill The LSSS is imporan o he smooh funcioning of he Suden Organizaions ha are so much an inegral par of our law school experience. Primarily, he ineracion of LSSS wih various organizaions is hrough he adminisraion and allocaion of approximaely a $30,000 budge. In addiion o budgeary maers, he senae also oversees numerous 'sanding' commiees ha on heir own provide o enhance and enrich our environmen hrough such funcions as movies and social gaherings. As a firs year suden I would like o conribue o his organizaion so ha we (firs year sudens) can help o shape his environmen no only for ourselves and our fellow sudens, bu also for hose sudens ha are ye o come. I would be less han candid wih my classmaes if I did no address myself o he personal reasons ha I seek your suppor, so I shall. Throughou my Collegiae experience I have been involved in suden governmen in some form or oher. Such experiences have included elecion o Suden Senae; elec ion o College ribunals; service on commiees ranging from Universiy Presidenial search o commiees overseeing parking problems. In each of he roles ha I have funcioned, I sincerely believe ha I have dedicaed my alens o he objecive we sough o obain. (Some of my fellow collegues may disagree). Mos imporan however, paricipaion in hese ypes of exra-curricular aciviies has been an educaional benefi o me and he consiuen I represened. I wish o coninue in jus such a role represening as many of our views as I can possibly bring forh. Thanx for aking he ime. TAMARA STEWART Secion 3 I am no running on any preense of superior abiliy, everyone in he secion is equally well qualified. I do no claim an y grea knowledge abou he LSSS, I am as ignoran as everyone else. I do hink ha I could do he job as well as can be done. Also, I could provide a fair represenaion of our group as I am abou as average a member as here is. Wish 1 could promise a sauna in Huchins Hall and champagne in he cafeeria, will you sele for a promise o work hard a he job and o never ake myself oo seriously? Fair enough. I'm he blonde wih he ee shirs if you wan o alk o me. As Dudley said o Sevens, "Ya goa have a lile hear. Pass he sal." TERRY P. CALHOUN BARBARA BIDELL WATKINS I feel srongly abou properly represening my consiuency and as Sec. 2 Rep. o LSSS I inend o hold regular meeings o air ideas, problems and gripes. I also inend o pu ou my own repor of LSSS meeings for he secion. Some of he ideas I've had so far include: a review of he funcion and auhoriy of he Law School Cour; he esablishmen of a speaker program (possibly in cooperaion wih W.L.S.A.) o complemen ha presened by P.A.D., encompassing a wider specrum of ineress and values; firs-year secion dinners, wih full or parial funding from he Law School. My vas experience has more han adequaely prepared me for he persuasive-asser ive-conci I iaory role ha I see for a Senae Rep. This has included door-odoor canvassing for George McGovern, handling empermenal ariss as public relaions liason for a professional folk and blues concer series, and spending wo years wih he U.S. Labor Dep. in confronaions wih recalciran and misdemeanan employers. feel ha i is a bi early for hose of us who began school here Augus 29 o have any deailed percepions of problems and issues which bese he law school and law sudens. Raher han. make promises, I will relae o you a couple of my aiudes owards suden governing bodies. Firs, I feel quie srongly ha a suden governing body like LSSS should concern iself wih issues direcly affecing law sudens in ~heir daily lives. Appropriae hings would be, for example, uiion, various fees, impu o faculy commiees of all sors, academic and suden regulaions, recreaion, ec. Inappropriae hings, I feel, are blanke saemens of suppor for or condemnaion of, poliical organizaions or movemens (for example: I don' feel ha i is wihin he scope of LSSS's charge from he law suden body o issue saemens in suppor of cannibalism (wih or wihou necessiy). Secondly, I feel very srongly in favor of represenaive governmen. This requires an informed elecorae and an informed represenaive. A leas hree of he persons who signed my own nominaing peiion indicaed ha hey had enerained houghs of running for his posiion bu had been unable o learn he necessary informaion concerning he process of obaining and validaing nominaing peiions. I would have been much healhier o have hose hree persons running in his elecion, bu by he ime I spoke wih hem i was oo lae for hem o complee he nominaing process. Informaion of his sor is imporan and should have been more effecively disseminaed. I will ac, whenever possible, o ge as much direc impu from all he sudens in Secion Ill as possib.le. You are all familiar wih he (See Campaign, page 6)

10 MUSIC: Wha is Punk Rock? Timohy Sawyer Knowlon A friend recenly asked me if I hough ha punk rock represened jus so much more bourgeois decadence or wheher I hough punk music was a manifesaion of alienaion agains he rigid insiuions of sociey in a more poliical sense. I appreciaed being asked for an opinion. All oo many of my friends and acquainances simply assume he former. A he same ime hey assume ha he punk rockers do no know how o play heir insrumens. None of hese people seem o have heard much, if any, of he music of he punk bands. I hink hey mus have read hese hings in Time or Rolling Sone (whose ediors have successfully perperaed he ruse ha he magazine is par of he couner-culure). I have on occasion expressed he view ha here is much o admire in many of hese new bands; judging from mos of he liseners' reacions I could have expeced a warmer recepion had I old hem ha I was an unreaed syphiliic. The noion ha all punk music is alike is simply wrong. There 1s an immense diversiy of syle among he punk bands. Several of he groups are sylisically similar o he early Who and Rolling Sones. Some coninue o develop ideas inroduced by he Velve Under- ground. Many of he bands ake up where he earlies punk rockers such as Them, he Shadows of Knigh, and he Seeds lef off. I do no deny ha several of he modern punk bands are no more han imiaors of hese early musical influences. However, many mor of he bands ake he old syles in new direcions or fuse wo or more of hese syles ino a unique sound. They are influenced by, bu no slaves o, older musical ideas. A number of he punk bands have developed musical syles no direcly raceable o any previous syles or schools. Admiedly all of he punk music ends o lack complexiy, bu his does no make i bad. Mos of he punk musicians do no have he echnical experise of he older more esablished rockers. This is no surprising since he punks are mosly younger and less experienced. The grea majoriy of he punk bands wih recording conracs are echnically compeen and a few are beer han merely compeen. Some of he bes musicians in a echnical sense make he leas ineresing music. The early Beales were compeen a bes. The laer Beales, wih he excepion of McCarney on bass, never aained he echnical proficiency of hundreds of rock bands oally unknown o all bu a few collecors. Music is more han echnique. The punk bands are se apar from oher rock configuraions in ha hey are rying o infuse a new vialiy ino rock by refusing o adhere o any of he mainsream musical and lyrical ideas. Rock has become fa and lazy. The FM saions are moving o so-called "mellow" programming. Too many of he esablished bands churn ou album afer album-each new lp duller han is predecessor. Rock is being co-opied by muzak. Rock needs he punks o bring he form back o is original reason for exisence. The punk rockers represen a wide range of poliical/ social orienaions. Of he punk music I have heard I would classify abou one-hird as genuinely poliical. Anoher hird srikes me as more bourgeois decadence (which is poliical in a differen fashion). A final hird seems o be nonpoliical. I have ye o hear a punk band, however, ha I believe would suppor American or Briish insiuions as currenly srucured. For he mos par his represens a youhful iconoclasm raher han any well developed poliical philosophy. I guess ha i is no really surprising ha punk rock does no appeal o mos of his school's law sudens. Punk rock is aimed a he alienaed and disesablished and no he new ruling class. I would be more han happy o discuss punk rock wih anybody who has an ineres in he subjec).

I have lived in Ann Arbor for he las four years as a graduae suden and have some experience eaching college level courses. My personal ineress (hose which have recenly received he greaes porion of my ime and effor) are: reading and wriing in he areas of fossil man and primae anaomy and behavior, reading science ficion, and physical aciviies (swimming, running, frisbee, sofball, ec.). Some of you know me in my role as Nigh Manager of he Law Club. Please feel free o alk o me by Campaign Saemens phone ( ) or in person (301 Lawyers Club). PETE SH IN":VAR Each year he Law School Suden Senae spends housands of dollars - dollars of suden money. Much of his money is probably well spen, bu here is no guaranee ha all (or even mos) of i is so spen. A major porion of he LSSS budge goes o enerainmen and social 'ac iviies - Happy Hours, Friday nigh movies, beer in he Quad, paries. These aciviies are worhy of funding only when hey saisfy a need no oherwise filled. Happy Hours, of course, are jusified by he grea, posiive funcion hey serve. The number of film groups on campus, however, may draw ino quesion he value of spending suden funds o suppor one more movie a week. Afer four undergrad vears in Ann Arbor I am familiar wih he various aciviies and social offerings around campus. For his reason I feel capable of shedding some ligh on he proper prioriies for spending all of our money wi,h which he LSSS is enrused. I would appreciae he opporuniy o... Work o insiue a formal professor evaluaion sysem where by suden evaluaions of various aspecs of individual professors' eaching qualiy would be publicized. Professors should no be evaluaed solely on heir publicaions... wha goes on in he classroom mus also become recognized. 2. Cafeeria A. Insis ha he sof ice cream machine be filled wih mix more frequenly as i runs ou of ice cream during mos meals. Dio for he chocolae milk machine. C. Work o improve food qualiy generally by relaying suden commens o he kichen saff. 3. Library Fully suppor he effors o ease congesion caused by " groupies". 4. Bluebooks Work o have he Law School provide bluebooks for all exams. Purchasing hem is an unnecessary inconvenience and he Law School could buy hem in huge quaniies a a lower cos/book. 5.
