1 Good News A MONTHLY NEWSLETTER First Baptist Church P. O. Box 1287 Tryon, North Carolina Non-Profit Org. U. S. POSTAGE PAID TRYON, NC Permit No. 8 RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED JULY 2010 ISSUE 7 Tea at Tryon Estates Barbara Batchler One of life s nicest blessings is having friends and having opportunities to bond with them. Carroll and June Brady; Jeff, Jodi, Harper and Simms Harris; Charles and Lib McKeller, Joe and Frances Wray and I had a wonderful time hosting an afternoon tea at Tryon Estates on Wednesday, May 5. Our special guests were Ernest Glass and his friend Mary, Archie and Marie Pearson and Ethel Dusenbury. We really enjoyed the good food and stimulating conversation. We learned that Ethel has a new friend whose name is Charles. She wanted to invite him but didn t realize that she could. Next time, Ethel! Harper and Simms were a delight to our guests, and our guests were also glad to have a chance to get to know Jeff and Jodi in a relaxed atmosphere. Tryon First Baptist Church is such a loving, caring church. It amazes me the way our church family comes together in hard times, trying times, needful times and no special reason times other than to bond. Please continue to remember those who need our visits, attention and prayers; it means so much to them. Emily Pereira As you may know, three new members of the First Baptist Church, Tryon church family are Anthony, Emily and Cole Pereira. We recently joined after visiting the church for almost a year. We feel blessed to have found such love and support as we are getting to know the town of Tryon. I, Emily, am from the great city of Winston Salem and grew up at Calvary Baptist, nicknamed Six Flags under God, because of its size. I met Ant at Charleston Southern in We became very close and introduced Cole in I had always asked God to hit me over the head when I found Mr. Right. I just had no idea His plan would involve a baby. We plan, God laughs, right? Ant and I decided not to get married until 2008 just to make sure this was indeed the voice of God. That same year I graduated with my bachelor's in nursing and accepted a position with Mission Hospitals where I still work. Ant has been with Side Street for the past six years and graduated with his associate in arts this past spring. Cole will start Tryon Elementary in the fall and loves sports. We look forward to becoming active contributors to the First Baptist Church, Tryon and the community as we know we are surrounded with good company. Youth's Corner Success is how high you bounce when you hit the bottom. George S. Patton SO.YOU THINK YOU KNOW THE BIBLE? from THE BOOK 1. 4 mail to First Baptist Church of Tryon, PO Box 1287, Tryon, NC Summer is a busy time. Hikes in the mountains, walks on the beach, hanging out by the pool, trips to visit family, there is so much coming and going that you eventually go back to work, just so you can recover. Busyness is everywhere. It is a part of our way of life. And in the midst of that busyness our spiritual lives often suffer. Unless you are a disciplined person, there is simply no time or energy left to cultivate the daily rhythm of prayer. And by prayer, I don t mean just a quick word to the Almighty about everything that is happening in your life. By prayer, I mean a time that is set aside, free from distraction, where you not only voice concerns to God, but where you also learn to listen in the silence. We would all be better people if we were faithful to that practice and probably healthier too that kind of prayer is a great stress reliever. Of course, those aren t the best reasons to develop your spiritual life, but in case you need a little extra motivation, feel free to use them. Busyness also occurs because many of you are dedicated to worthwhile work in the community. Not only do you work all day, but much of your free time is used to support and participate in other worthy causes. Since you have nothing else to do (I hope you sense the sarcasm), I thought I would add something to your busy schedule. Actually, I know if we don t get it on your schedule soon, you will already be booked. On October 9, Tryon First Baptist will again lead a day of mission work in Polk County. Many of the projects will be emergency home repair, but there will also be projects that include yard work (aka pulling weeds and such), inside home clean up (vacuum, mop, dust) meal preparation, and much more. In other words, no matter your skill level, there will be something for everyone. This would be a great way for families to spend the day together serving those in need in the name of Christ. So in the midst of your busyness, set aside Saturday, October 9, as a day to serve your neighbors in need. And in the process, you may find that service and spiritually are linked. Enjoy the rest of the summer, and the midst of all the busyness, set aside time to spend with the Creator you ll be glad you did. Kim Culbreth Vacation Bible school is just around the corner! July 11-15, 2010! We still need crew leaders and lots of supplies. We plan to sail the High Seas nightly from 5:30 until 7:30 with the finale every night in the sanctuary from 7:30 until 8:00 where parents can pick up their children and check out our activities though our power point presentations. All church members are encouraged to join us each night at 7:30 in the sanctuary. Please contact Kim Culbreth at jarrettheath@windstream.net or if you would like to be a crew leader or donate money or supplies.
