1 May 2011 Tower Lines I often hear folks say, We re all in this together! We ve heard it said as we ve listened to survivors speak of recovering from a tornado or flood...we ve heard it said by politicians and Wall Streeters as they refer to the economic recovery...and we even hear it said in the church. It seems to be a mantra of our time. I think that one reason for this is that we are so interconnected with one another through our activities, our actions, the internet, and our daily lives. It makes visible the invisible. Our interconnectedness allows us to feel as though we have a safety net that can be extended to others when hard times come...but it can also make us feel as if one goes down, we all go down together. However, the truth is that we only persevere through the difficult times when we are truly together. Unfortunately, when we sometimes get distracted by stress, anxiety, and busyness we forget the strength that community offers us. In the midst of pressure filled lives, we sometimes back away from the very resource that can help us strong relationships that our local communities offer us. The church is one of those communities. You are all at a really exciting time as a congregation, but it is stressful as well. You can almost see the end of this interim time but it s not quite there. I hear many of you voicing anxieties Will we be big enough to attract a minister? Do we have enough children? Do we have enough money? I want to encourage you to be an encouragement to one another. Be the best you can be. Become more active in the church if you can. Continue to give thankfully to support the work of the church. Rely on one another. As we complete this interim time together, let us embrace this community in new ways. Let s ask ourselves some tough questions: Can we get over ourselves? Can we stop focusing on our private needs and open to the greater good, to what will benefit many? Can we realize that in this intertwined world, if the least among us benefit,we all benefit? If they suffer, we suffer. Can we let go of our need to blame, to judge, to scapegoat all the thoughtless and hasty ways we separate from each other? Can we give up fear and exchange it for generosity? Let s struggle with the answers. And let us experience this community as a healthy community ready for what our future holds out to our new pastor, to one another, and to God. Blessings Sue

Summer will soon be here and in the past the youth of our church have gone to (Presbyterian) Urban Mission to volunteer in the food pantry. Matt Trei will not be able to go because he will be working. I need adults to transport and be with the kids during their 3 hours on Thursdays in the food pantry. I will also need to know how many youth would be going and how often. Please contact Ava Our 5th Sunday potluck will be May 29th. We will be having a BIRTHDAY PARTY for those of our congregation who are over 90 years young this year. Among those celebrating will be Lytle and Kathryn Caldwell, Nona Mae Cripps, Mary Harrison, Cotton Lucas, Lucille Miller, Eugene Urish, Donna Peterson, John Gardner and Mary Lou Marshall. Bring birthday cards for our honorees and we will make sure each person receives the cards and a small personal birthday cake. Plan on joining us for this special meal

Nicholas Daniel Hahn son of Lisa & Larry Hahn is graduating with a bachelor of science degree in marketing and sports management. To Pastor Sue and our Church Family: We thank you for your visits, your many cards, thoughts and prayers after the loss of our granddaughter, Kylie Jobe. No doubt her strong faith was nurtured in this church in her early years in Sunday and Junior Choir. May God Bless Dick & Joyce Brooke Donations to Mid/Del Food Pantry paper goods Paper towels, Toilet paper, Paper napkins, tissues, paper plates etc. Those youth who would like to join the church as full members have an opportunity to attend confirmation classes beginning next Sunday, May 15 at 1:30-3:00 p.m. in the afternoon. Classes will run through the middle of June, with confirmation occurring on June 12 in worship. Please let Pat Jackson or Pastor Sue know if you are interested. Youth should be in middle school or high school. We're getting ready to cook up a storm this summer during Vacation Bible, July in the evenings. There will be opportunities for children, youth, and adults that week, so put it on your calendar now! Summer is getting close! As is our tradition, our choir doesn't meet during the summer, so we are relying on YOU to volunteer for a music special weekly. The sign up sheet can be found on the bulletin board in the hallway. How can you make a joyful noise?

We would also like to have a couple of people as substitutes for those who need vacation time etc we ONLY need 2 more teams.

4 OTHER ACTIVITIES TO MENTION MOBILE MEALS, is still looking for volunteers to help shop, cook, and deliver meals. Would you be able to help cook one Friday a month on a rotation basis with 4 or 5 other teams? We would also like to have a couple of people as substitutes for those who need vacation time etc we ONLY need 2 more teams. WOMEN S CIRCLES May 17 th, Esther Circle meets at 10 am and Ruth/Naomi meets at 1:30 pm on the third Tuesday. Wannabee s will be traveling to Dwight Mission the 14 th through the 17 th Men s prayer breakfast is May 21 st, at 8 am in the church Kitchen please see Tom Williams for more info. Committee s please check the calendar for your particular committee meeting dates and times. Keenagers We will meet at Church on May 10 th at noon for potluck and games. Create-to-Share will meet May 24 th at 9:30 am to work on lap robes, walker bags, chemo hats and comfort pillows and then have a potluck lunch after the work. 5 COUPONS NEEDED!!!!! Please save your grocery store coupons. Even if they have expired!!!!! The Kiwanis organization will clip and send them to the military for distribution to the overseas bases. The coupon manufacturer will allow our military to use them even if they are expired, up to six months. Bring them to the kitchen and leave them in the blue bins. A BIG THANK YOU. I want to thank everyone for your good wishes for my recovery in March after hospitalization for a knee replacement and congestive heart failure. It was an unpleasant couple of weeks. I am now on the mend and everyday is better. Claire Reddick THINK BABIES IN MAY & JUNE!!!! Along with the Infant Crisis Center, the circles are taking donations for sunset Gap in Kentucky. It is an organization like Urban Mission and services the surrounding area. We donate baby clothes, bottles, small toys & money in June each year. Please help us send a substantial offering this year. I was feeling pretty bad for a while and you all gave me hope and encouragement. This latest round of chemo has not bothered me as much and so I am beginning to feel much better. I continue to hold you in my prayers and hope someday to return to church on a regular basis. Ardith Larsen
