7 MONTHLY HUMOR NORTH DAKOTA FARM KID (MARINE CORPS RECRUIT TRAINING) Dear Ma & Pa, I am well. Hope you are. Tell Brother Walt and Brother Elmer the Marine Corps beats working for old man Minch by a mile. Tell them to join up quick before all of the places are filled. I was restless at first because you get to stay in bed till nearly 6 a.m. But I am getting so I like to sleep late. Tell Walt and Elmer all you do before breakfast is smooth your cot, and shine some things. No hogs to slop, feed to itch, mash to mix, wood to split, fire to lay. Practically nothing. Men got to shave but it is not so bad, there's warm water. Breakfast is strong on trimmings like fruit juice, cereal, eggs, bacon, etc., but kind of weak on chops, potatoes, ham, steak, fried eggplant, pie and other regular food, but tell Walt and Elmer you can always sit by the two city boys that live on coffee. Their food, plus yours, holds you until noon when you get fed again. It's no wonder these city boys can't walk much. We go on 'route marches,' which the platoon sergeant says are long walks to harden us. If he thinks so, it's not my place to tell him different. A 'route march' is about as far as to our mailbox at home. Then the city guys get sore feet and we all ride back in trucks. The sergeant is like a school teacher. He nags a lot. The Captain is like the school board. Majors and Colonels just ride around and frown. They don't bother you none. This next one will kill Walt and Elmer with laughing. I keep getting medals for shooting. I don't know why. The bulls-eye is near as big as a chipmunk head and don't move, and it ain't shooting at you like the Higgett boys at home. All you got to do is lie there all comfortable and hit it. You don't even load your own cartridges. They come in boxes. Then we have what they call hand-to-hand combat training. You get to wrestle with them city boys. I have to be real careful though, they break real easy. It ain't like fighting with that ole bull at home. I'm about the best they got in this except for that Tug Jordan from over in Silver Lake. I only beat him once. He joined up the same time as me, but I'm only 5'6 and 130 pounds and he's 6'8 and near 300 pounds dry. Be sure to tell Walt and Elmer to hurry and join before other fellers get onto this setup and come stampeding in. Your loving daughter, Alice Happy 242nd Birthday United States Marine Corps November 10, 1775 The Post Children s Christmas Party will be held on Saturday, December 9th, from 12:00 to 2:00 PM. Lunch will be served promptly at 12:00 noon. This Party is for New Hartford American Legion Family Members ONLY. Separate sign-up sheets for BOYS or GIRLS will be available at the Bar, starting on November 1st. You must show your Post 1376 Membership Card when you sign up. Please sign whether, boy or girl, and age on appropriate sheets, as well as the adults that will attend. There will be a limit of 6 adults. Children must be accompanied by the adult who signs them up. Please remember that the party is for children 10 years old and younger. The cut-off date is Friday, November 25th. We need this information to be sure each child who attends the party will have a gift! Any questions on the party can be answered by calling Joanne (315) New Hartford American Legion Auxiliary

8 LEGION RIDERS REPORT The next meeting of the Riders will be held on November 19th starting at 12:30 PM. This will be our last meeting until Spring. Riders / Supporters: the 2018 membership dues are now due; please make your check out to the American Legion Riders Post #1376 or drop off dues in an envelope in our mailbox with your name on it and address it to Tom Liesch. Your 2018 ALR ID cards and receipt will be returned. TAPS It is with great sorrow that I announce the loss of our brother FRANK AMAROSA who passed away on October 8th. The Riders had a presence at his wake and funeral. Please visit our face-book site New Hartford American Legion Riders... or browse the website: or National at Ride to Live - Live to Ride! For the Good of the Legion, Tim Converse, President The American Legion and the Legion Riders offer support through the Legacy Scholarship Fund. The American Legion wants to ensure higher education is a possibility for children whose parents lost their lives while serving our country. Beginning with the 2017 award year, The American Legion expanded the scholarship to include children of VArated, post-9/11 veterans with a combined disability rating of 50 percent or higher. The American Legion Riders came into Reno, Nev., having ridden more than 1,400 miles from Dodge City, Kan., and raised more than $555,000 for The American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund. But the Riders were far from done. After another successful Legacy Run, the Legion Riders and American Legion Departments donated more than $667,000 on The American Legion National Convention floor Aug. 22. That brought this year s Legacy Run total to a ride record $1,224,653 the fourth straight year the ride has raised more than $1 million. NEW HARTFORD AMERICAN LEGION NEW LED SIGN APPEAL FUND UPDATE Our Appeal Fund Drive for our new LED Sign that will be erected in front of our Post is going well. We advertized on our appeal flyer that was mailed out and published in our newsletter that we were accepting donations until Veterans Day on November 11th. We had planned to dedicate the sign on Veterans Day but due to unforeseen circumstances the contractors were not able to complete the installation at that time. The plan is now to have the sign installed and ready for dedication on May 28th, Memorial Day We will accept any donations until then. Finalized details will be published in the April and May 2018 Newsletters. The flyer is again published on the next page and will appear in our newsletter until May Again, a Big Thank You to all who have donated! 10 Andy Rooney Andy Rooney was born in Albany, New York, He attended The Albany Academy, and later attended Colgate University in Hamilton in central New York, where he was initiated into the Sigma Chi fraternity, before he was drafted into the United States Army in August Rooney began his career in newspapers while in the Army, when in 1942, he began writing for Stars and Stripes in London during World War II. In February 1943, flying with the Eighth Air Force, he was one of six correspondents who flew on the second American bombing raid over Germany. He was the first journalist to reach the Ludendorff Bridge after the 9th Armored Division captured it on March 7, He was 32 km (20 mi) to the west when he heard the bridge had been captured. Forty years after the event, he wrote about his luck. "It was a reporter's dream. One of the great stories of the war had fallen into my lap." When news of the bridge capture reached American newspapers, it was front-page news. Rooney rated the capture of the bridge as one of the top five events of the entire European war, alongside D-Day. Later, he was one of the first American journalists to visit the Nazi concentration camps near the end of World War II, and one of the first to write about them. During a segment on Tom Brokaw's The Greatest Generation, Rooney stated that he had been opposed to World War II because he was a pacifist. He recounted that what he saw in those concentration camps made him ashamed that he had opposed the war and permanently changed his opinions about whether "just wars" exist. For his service as a war correspondent in combat zones during the war, Rooney was decorated with the Bronze Star Medal and Air Medal. Here are a few of Andy Rooney s thoughts on life as seen through his eyes: I've learned...that the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person. I've learned...that just one person saying to me, "You've made my day!" makes my day. I've learned...that having a child fall asleep in your arms is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world. I've learned...that being kind is more important than being right. I've learned...that you should never say no to a gift from a child. I've learned...that I can always pray for someone when I don't have the strength to help him in some other way. I've learned...that life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes. I've learned...that money doesn't buy class. I've learned...that to ignore the facts does not change the facts. I've learned...that when you plan to get even with someone, you are only letting that person continue to hurt you. I've learned...that the easiest way for me to grow as a person is to surround myself with people smarter than I am. I've learned...that no one is perfect until you fall in love with them. I've learned...that opportunities are never lost; someone will take the ones you miss. I've learned...that when you harbor bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere. I've learned...that one should keep his words both soft and tender, because tomorrow he may have to eat them. I've learned...that a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks. I've learned...that everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you're climbing it. I've learned...that the less time I have to work with, the more things I get done. To all of our VETERANS we hope you enjoy your Very Special Day, you earned it!

Respectfully Submitted, Bill Brucato, Manager VETERANS DAY WEEKEND BOYCOTT People are now calling for a complete National Boycott of the NFL for Sunday November 12th, which is Veteran s Day Weekend. They are calling for a boycott of all football telecast, all fans, all ticket holders, stay away from attending any games, let them play to empty stadiums. Pass this post along to all your friends and family. Honor our military, some of whom come home with the American Flag draped over their coffin..there are plenty of ways, times and places to protest concerning one s chosen cause, but to do so during a brief special time set aside to honor our nation s flag and the bravery and lives of our nation s military heroes, is inappropriate and disrespectful. Of course Black lives matter, but so do the precious lives of millions of US soldiers (of all races) who have made the ultimate sacrifice to defend and protect our nation s rights and freedoms.and who most certainly deserve all of our respect. It s not about Trump, its about all those who bravely and unselfishly serve and who have served our nation. The Star Spangled Banner is presented to honor all of them. Thanks to all of our Veterans who ever served and who are still serving they have given you the choice to make this decision. New Hartford American Legion Post 1376 will NOT show any NFL games scheduled for November 12th. New Hartford American Legion Post 1376 In 1899, pharmacist George Bunting blended his own cold cream, which, in addition to removing makeup and relieving sunburn, gained popularity for its ability to cure eczema. The No Eczema claim not only became the product s major selling point, it also gave it its name: Noxzema
