The second-rate mind is only happy when it is thinking with the minority. The first-rate mind is only happy when it is thinking. A.A. MILNE American author ( ) COMMANDER S MESSAGE We published this newsletter a bit earlier than normal due to the fact that I left for Branson, Missouri to attend my ship s reunion. I thank everyone who gave their reports to me so we could put this letter together on such short notice. We left on September 8th and we will return on the 24th. I will report on the events that took place after I left in the November Newsletter. November will be a very busy month with Daylight Saving Time beginning on the 4th and Election Day on the 6th. Our Post Early Bird Party scheduled for the 10th followed by Veterans Day on the 11th. Of course, Thanksgiving on the 22nd will bring the month to a close and then we are into December which will be just as busy. I will publish the schedule of events for December in November s Newsletter. We will hold our annual Early Bird Party on Saturday, November 10th, starting at 5:00 PM. This party is free to all of our members who pay their dues by October 31st and includes the Auxiliary and SAL as well as the Legion. It is our way of showing our appreciation of your support for our Post. As we have stated in the past, this party is for paid up members and there are NO guests allowed. Last year we had a couple of members show up without paying their deposit and bringing a guest. What is fair for one is fair to all and if you are in violation of these few simple rules you will be asked to leave. Don t put yourself or your guest in this embarrassing situation. If you are a Veteran and want your wife or a family member who does not belong to join you then sign them up in the Auxiliary or SAL. Eligibility for the Auxiliary or SAL are clearly stated on the back of their respected applications. You can call the for further details. We will have a list of those who took the time to sign in and put down a deposit and also will have a copy of this newsletter with us on the night of the party. As we have done in the past, we will ask that if you plan on attending, you will be asked to put a $10.00 deposit down when you sign up. This is

2 necessary to insure that we order enough food and that you will be there. If you show up you will be reimbursed the $10.00 if not, you won t. A sign up sheet will be available at the bar starting October 1st. You will need to show your 2013 membership card when you sign up. I will once again repeat this message in next months newsletter. On a sad note we are asking everyone to say a prayer for "Dark horse" 3rd Battalion 5th Marines and their families. They are fighting it out in Afghanistan & they have lost 12 marines in 4 days. They are: Justin Allen, 23; Brett Linley, 29; Matthew Weikert, 29; Justus Bartett, 27; Dave Santos, 21; Chase Stanley, 21; Jesse Reed, 26; Matthew Johnson, 21; Zachary Fisher, 24; Brandon King, 23; Christopher Goeke, 23; Sheldon Tate, 27. All are Marines who gave their lives for us just recently. It is very unfortunate that this not in the newspapers. These are our nation s real heroes'. As always, keep our servicemen and women in your thoughts and prayers that they return home safely to a grateful nation. For the Good of the Legion, Fred Williams, Post Commander SAL NEWS The next meeting of the Son s of Post 1376 will be held on Wednesday, October 3rd starting at 7:30 PM. The new 2013 cards have been in for some time now, your membership dues contribute to the overall programs of the SAL and keeps our membership growing. You are important to us. Your promptness in forwarding dues at this time will be deeply appreciated. Dues will remain at $20.00 and can be mailed to: Bob Byrd, 4 Foxcroft Rd., New Hartford, NY or put them in the SAL mailbox at the Post. Checks for dues can be made payable to SAL Post PLEASE NOTE; If you pay by cash, ask for a receipt and make sure your name is on the envelope. Also, if your address has changed please let me know so we can be sure you will receive your Newsletter. Dues paid by October 31, 2012 entitle you to attend the "Early Bird" Party in November. In a recent article in the SAL National Newsletter, the New Hartford, NY Squadron 1376 was recognized for their gifts of blankets to the Veterans who are confined to area nursing homes. The New Hartford American Legion Post 1376 Sons of the American Legion would like to welcome the following new members to our Squadron. Please welcome: Mark Harjung, Vincent Parrotta, Jerome Donovan, Mike Donovan, Adam Burback, John Gelfuso, Brandon Murphy and Andrew Murphy. As always we thank all of our loyal members for their continued support. Robert Byrd, Adjutant HONOR FLIGHT TO WASHINGTON My name is Regina Galer and I along with my husband Burke, are members of New Hartford Post Burke is a World War II veteran. Recently Burke and I were on a Southwest Airline flight from Chicago to Albany and the flight attendant gave us this article that was in the Utica OD. She treated Burke like royalty on the entire flight and I would like to share this article with you. This past June there was an article in the Utica Observer Dispatch written by Russell Cerminaro in which he told of a trip that he was invited to go on with a group of World War II veterans. They took a flight to Washington DC that was arranged by a small group of veterans and volunteers. They left for the airport by bus early that morning and stopped along the way to pick up others. After picking everyone up they were escorted to the airport by about 50 motorcyclists and a state police vehicle. It was a 45-minute ride and there were police vehicles at every major intersection to keep traffic from entering their column. They were greeted by a large crowd of civilians and members of every branch of service, including a color guard. When they arrived at Baltimore Airport, they were greeted by another large crowd of well wishers and military personnel, thanking

3 them for their service to our country. They were saluted by the military as they passed by. They were given special treatment where ever they went so that those that were disabled did not have far to walk. On their return flight to Albany there was another crowd to welcome them home. When they were having supper a 12-year old boy came up to each table and shook their hand and said, Thank you for keeping our country free. The flight is called Leatherstocking Honor Flight. Regina Galer, Post Auxiliary Member NEW HARTFORD POST 1376 AMERICAN LEGION RIDERS REPORT The next meeting of the American Legion Riders will take place on Sunday, October 21st starting at 12:15 PM. The American Legion Riders would like to thank all who supported us with our rides and other events this summer. Three parades, the Disabled American Veteran s Ride, the American Legion Legacy Fund Ride, the Montgomery Experience Ride, the Vietnam Get Together run and a funeral escort has kept us very busy this season. And, if the weather allows, there will be one or two more rides this year along with another parade. One of these rides will take us up through the back roads of Oneida County to benefit the Utica Development Center and another ride in October to finish the season. Details will be provided as they become available. The riders would like to welcome John Blase to our group. I know that he will enjoy our events. The Riders would like to thank everyone for their continued support. Please check out our website, or our facebook-site for pictures and activities. Or National at on our Facebook site for activities. 5 MONTHLY HUMOR FOUR One day a man and his wife went golfing, as they frequently did together. They arrived at the twelfth hole, where the husband promptly hit a tremendous slice that ended up behind an old barn. I guess I will have to play it safe and chip onto the fairway, said the man. No, wait, replied the wife, who went up to the barn and opened the two large doors. You can hit the ball through the barn. The man decided to give it a try. But he sliced the ball, which ricocheted off the barn and struck his wife in the head, killing her instantly. The man was distraught and wallowed in his misery for many weeks, depriving himself of golf the whole time. Eventually he realized that he must face his demons and headed out to the very same golf course to play. Once again he found himself at the twelfth hole and once again he hit a slice behind the very same barn. As he was preparing to hit out safely to the fairway, one of the other players in his foursome remarked, Why don t you try and hit it through the barn? Oh, no, replied the man. I tried that the last time. What happened? I shot an eight! *****OCTOBER S***** **TUESDAY NIGHT DINNER** ROAST PORK DINNER with Mashed Potatoes, Dressing, Gravy, Vegetable, Salad, Rolls and Coffee TUESDAY JULY 10, 2012 Serving from 4:00 7:00 pm Donation $8.00 POST LOTTERY REPORT AUGUST 2012 LOTTERY NUMBERS DATE/NUMBER 1/171 2/048 3/514 4/910 5/317 6/657 7/452 8/908 9/863 10/877 11/820 12/410 13/539 14/049 15/962 16/476 17/197 18/412 19/914 20/187 21/659 22/213 23/693 24/640 25/396 26/347 27/091 28/759 29/953 30/626 31/959 Disclaimer: Every effort is made to accurately report these numbers.
