URSUA Chaplain Monsignor Dennis Luterbach Grand Knight Kevin Mendonca Financial Secretary Alberto Nisperos Field Agent Jose P. Cabalu District Deputy #23 Ed Panes MARCH 2014 NEWSLETTER Dear Brother Knights, Worthy Brothers, we are coming closer to the holiest season in our entire catholic calendar and I am sure we are looking forward to celebrating Easter but it would be more meaningful if we do something special or different during the holy week or the weeks leading up to the holy week. In the words of our beloved Pope Francis Lent is a time to change directions, to respond to the reality of evil and poverty. He goes on to say We need to change for the better, Lent helps us fight against our faults, it is also a time of grace, a time to convert and live out our baptism fully. I am sure there are many ways we can live or carry out these not so difficult requests of our beloved Pope. We are approaching the Annual BC & Yukon AGM & Convention April and this again is an opportunity for brothers to come forward and support the entire K of C of Richmond by lending a helping hand. We will be setting up the registration areas, altar and business meetings rooms on Wednesday and Thursday i.e. 23 rd and 24 th and any help is greatly appreciated. Also you are most welcome to attend any of the business sessions that will be on every day and get to know more about the Knights of Columbus. After the Easter season we will be having our Family Sports evening and also planning a Bowling Tournament at the Zone Bowling Alley at Silver City Richmond and also a Golf Tournament. So brothers those who are interested in either golfing or bowling please read your as there will be more information passed on to all brother knights. Lastly and most important, if you have not paid your dues recently please make an honest attempt to pay your current dues. If you attend mass on the weekend and not sure how to get in contact, please see an usher of the Knights of Columbus and ask them to either pass it on to me or to Bro Alberto Nisperos the Financial Secretary of the council. Vivat Jesus! Kevin G. Mendonca Grand Knight Archbishop Duke Council P a g e

FIELD AGENT S MESSAGE Jose P. Cabalu, FIC, CHS Field Agent The Value of Membership Referrals As a professional insurance agent, one of the things I appreciate most is when one of my brother Knight clients or his wife refers another member to me. This is a great endorsement of the service I provided. It tells me that they were so pleased with what I helped them accomplish that they want me to help others achieve the same level of financial safety and security. When I meet with you, please pass along the names of those who might be able to benefit from the analysis that I provide. Similarly, there is no stronger membership recruiting tool than the referral. How many of us know an eligible Catholic male who is not a member of the Knights of Columbus? Do you have Catholic family or friends, local or not, who have yet to join? Most likely, they ve never been asked and don t know enough about the Order to seek out membership on their own. If you have names of potential members, please pass them along to me or your Grand Knight. Let us know if we can use your name when we contact the gentlemen in question. It s always more effective to tell a candidate for membership that he was recommended by a current member, especially someone he knows. Don t worry if the candidate is outside the area I serve or beyond the district of the local councils, we can make sure we put these future members in touch with the right people in their communities. New members are the lifeblood of the Order. All the good deeds done by the Order are driven by the members. Over the past decade, Knights have given more than $1.475 billion to charity and provided in excess of 673 million hours of service. And our membership has merely scratched the surface in North America. Imagine the potential. Contact me today to schedule a meeting. I am at or jose.cabalu@kofc.org. 2 P a g e

SK PETER MCDONAGH WITH FONDEST MEMORIES The Late Brother Peter McDonagh was born on March 23, 1936 in a small mining village in Scotland into a family consisting of 3 brothers and 3 sisters, and at the age of 20 got married to Kathleen and 5 days later moved to Canada. From a young age Peter was dedicated to church and community work, as a young lad he was an altar server and served mass daily, after moving to Canada he helped out at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Vancouver and then moved to Richmond in 1972, where his involvement got even more intense. In the community he coached at the Richmond Soccer Association, and was a member of the Men s Club. He later was elected on the Parish Education Committee and was later very involved with the opening of the Kindergarten in He was later selected as the liaison for the Archdiocesan Central School Board. He was very involved also with the Sisters of Atonement and helped out on a regular basis serving sandwiches and soups to the homeless on Vancouver s East side. Bro Peter was the charter member of Archbishop Duke Council 6855, which opened its doors on October 19, He took an active part in the Council activities and served as a Grand Knight , he also served as a KofC Insurance Agent from and later was also a District Deputy of our Region and also a member of the 1 st Degree Team. He became a Sir Knight in 1977 of the 4 th Degree Assembly #0029, and was a charter member when Assembly 2485 was formed here in our District. He served as the Faithful Navigator of Pope John Paul 1 Assembly 2485 from and again in He was a strong supporter of Pro Life Activities and served on Richmond Hospital Board for 4 years to ensure it was Abortion Free. Peter loved the community of St Paul and was always there every Pancake Breakfast to greet and meet everyone that entered the parish gym. He was there to encourage, support and help anyone that he knew and we will all miss his Scottish accent, his jokes and quick action to ensure everything was in ship shape for our monthly pancake breakfast. Bro Peter will be missed immensely by Council P a g e

SPRING BREAK BASKETBALL March 17-21, 2014 Once again we held our spring break basketball camp for kids of all ages and were able to book the parish gym for 4 days. Thanks to Bro Manny Tolentino, Bro Raphael Teotico and a few others we were able to provide quality exercise and fitness for the youth who look forward to these opportunities to come out and play and encourage other kids also to come out with them. Bro Manny usually gets the kids to warm up and then gets them to practise and then gives them a few pointers to improve their skills. After that the teams are made and everyone is given an equal opportunity to play for about 3 hours. We serve the kids light refreshments to keep them encouraged to come out and play and also keep them in a safe and secured environment. It is very gratifying to see how much these kids enjoy what we do for them and I am amazed how much it means to them that myself and Bro Manny are always asked as early as Jan/Feb if we will be holding a spring break camp again for them to come to. In fact we even have some parents that enquire or us to see if we are organising these games again for spring break. We feel it s a good sign that we get such a positive response and the community is getting to know more and more about the various programs the knights run for kids in our parish. 4 P a g e

FAMILY BOWLING DAY We held a Family Bowling Day on March 8, 2014 in lieu of the Joint Council Bowling that was cancelled by the host council. We had around 20 members and families that had initially signed up so we decided to still proceed and make it a family/council outing for brother knights and families to attend. We all assembled at the Zone Bowling at Silvercity around 12 noon and got all the necessary formalities arranged and were able to get 3 lanes booked for our council. We had a good team in each lane and before long everyone was having a good time, the score kept on getting better and after bowling for over 2 hours the highest scorers were marked down by our Sports Director Bro Manny Tolentino,. Trophies were awarded for the highest score for Men, Women and Youth and we are very thankful to our District Deputy #23 Ed Panes who came out to participate with us and award the trophies to the winners. We will be having a bowling tournament after Easter and will keep all those avid bowlers informed of the dates. Pop and Pizza were served to all participants and everyone that attended thoroughly enjoyed this afternoon. 6 March Madness Lifeteen Challenge Once again we were challenged by the Lifeteen group of the parish to a sporting game. It was decided by their core team to challenge us to a game of Volleyball and see if they could out do us this time and regain the trophy. We readily accepted their offer and set about enquiring from bro Knights that would come out and play for us and support this annual event. The date was set by them as Mar 16, 2014 which was the start of Spring Break and many brothers had already made plans with their families so the response we got was very low. Nevertheless a few brave men aka, these men they call knights, took upon themselves to show up for the game and we are grateful to our Team Leader Bro Manny Tolentino & Bros Lorenzo Crisologo, Herb Wong, Pat Macken, Catalino Orillaneda, Roman Lara our very new transferee who assisted GK Kevin Mendonca on taking on the young and energetic Lifeteen group to a set of 5 games. We could not have pulled it off if not assisted by our young lady Megan Tolentino who supported her father and the Knights and played on our side. We are glad to report that we thwarted an attempt to take the championship trophy away from us for another year and look forward to another challenge from the youth group of the parish. 7 The Knights of Columbus has been supporting this organisation since 2003 and has become a partner in providing this wonderful service to our brothers and sisters in this world. So far the foundation has been able to reach those that are stricken by War, Old Age, Sickness and other forms of calamites in this world and has delivered wheelchairs free of cost to places such as Cuba, Mexico, Poland, Philippines, Afghanistan, Iraq, Dominican Republic and also here at home in Canada and the USA just to name a few. The Mission of this foundation is Mrs. Christiana Flessner, Executive Director Canadian Wheelchair Foundation September 16, Raising awareness of the needs and abilities of people with physical disabilities. - Delivering mobility into the lives of those who have no means to acquire a wheelchair. - Transforming lives through Mobility, and with it giving Freedom, Dignity & Hope. Our Wheelchair Drive has been growing steadily; during the first 3 months of 2014 we were able to donate 5 more wheelchairs for this worthy organisation which brings our total to date to 45 wheelchairs donated. We are grateful to those brothers that have shown compassion and came forward to lend their monetary support, and to those friends and acquaintances that have put their trust in us and have donated generously for this cause. We are still in need of all your compassion and generosity to reach our ultimate target of 100 wheelchairs and I am confident that all brothers and families will do our council proud by showing your support. Remember that the $150 you donate towards a new wheelchair not just gets a wheelchair to an individual but actually transforms their life for good and gives them an opportunity to lead a more meaningful life, thanks to your generosity. GK Kevin Mendonca presenting a cheque on behalf of Council 6855 to Joy Kilback, Admin Assistant, Canadian Wheelchair Foundation. If you would like to know more about this wonderful organisation please visit the Canadian Wheelchair Foundation Booth set up at each pancake breakfast or visit the website 7 P a g e January 3, 2014
