Council 6855 has reason to celebrate, has reason to give thanks. The month of October is a special month for the Council. Our council was chartered 39 years ago. The membership should be proud of the accomplishments made within the span of 39 years of its existence. Having been around for that long, Council 6855 is the mother of most of the councils in the District. Beyond the numerous awards and recognition it has received, the council has made a name, a trademark. The mere mention of 6855 in conversations within the District or circles of K of C events evokes a sense of respect for being ahead of the other councils. Looking back, there were 15 Grand Knights that played different and important roles in developing this council, beginning with Charter Grand Knight Worthy Past Grand Knight Frank Kouwenhoven ending with my immediate predecessor Immediate Past Grand Knight Bro. Lorenzo Ranada. We recognize the council hasn t been spared of the challenges that accompany growth in breadth and depth and we are grateful for the council s firm determination to meet these challenges and work for better results. Our gratitude for the status and recognition we have thus far collectively achieved is tied with great expectations for growth in membership, acceptance of greater responsibilities towards our parish and the wider community. We embrace this mission knowing that we can never rest on our laurels. We continue to race on and keep our eyes on the finish line. In the Liturgical Year, October is the month of the Holy Rosary. One reason the Blessed Mother asked us to pray the rosary might be because it can benefit anyone at any stage of the spiritual life from beginners to advanced. The "Catechism of the Catholic Church" teaches about various types of prayer including vocal prayer, meditation and contemplation. The rosary is a vocal prayer, a meditation and can lead to contemplation as Pope John Paul II mentioned in his encyclical Rosary of the Virgin Mary. Here is a quote from that encyclical: "A path of contemplation... But the most important reason for strongly encouraging the practice of the Rosary is that it represents a most effective means of fostering among the faithful that commitment to the contemplation of the Christian mystery which I have proposed in the Apostolic Letter Novo Millenio Ineuente as a genuine 'training in holiness': 'What is needed is a Christian life distinguished above all in the art of prayer'. Inasmuch as contemporary culture, even amid so many indications to the contrary, has witnessed the flowering of a new call for spirituality, due also to the influence of other religions, it is more urgent than ever that our Christian communities should become 'genuine schools of prayer'. The Rosary belongs among the finest and most praiseworthy traditions of Christian contemplation." Fittingly, the council is engaged in a spiritual activity of daily recitation of the rosary in October. Finally, Thanksgiving is celebrated in the month of October. It is a designed co-incidence. Humans that we are, we can take our gifts for granted, and Thanksgiving is an opportunity to give thanks with a grateful heart to the Lord, our God for the many blessings received whether individually or as a collective. Happy 39 th Anniversary to Council 6855 and to one and all! God bless. Vivat Jesus! Rely A. Diego Grand K night Archbishop Duke Council kofc6855@gmail.com :Phone:

2 Page 2 Archbishop Duke Council 6855 Newsletter Christina, Chris, John, Scott, Lynne and Gerina on Divine Mercy Sunday Below: I am sure someone shouted, Mine! and had a clean swipe at the ball. The Knights wrapped up the game in tidy and gracious fashion. K-N-I -G-H-T-S, go KNIGHTS! Dear Brother Knights, On this special occasion of your 39th Anniversary, I offer you my heartfelt congratulations and wish you many more success in the years to come. As we look back and reminisce the past, let us dwell more time on the things that made this council stand proudly and stayed vibrant amidst the challenges that thwarted your path. Let us leave behind the things that brought COLUMBUS CHARITIES negative energy and nuisances and mark them as lesson learned to be relegated to a distant corner. Recognizing the people who have worked unselfishly and devoted their time to make a difference is a very noble thing to do. While awards cannot exactly mirror our genuine gratitude to these brother knights and their families, they bring awareness to others and help them be inspired to also do something. As Helen Keller said, The world is STATE COUNCIL WORKSHOP moved along, not only by the mighty shoves of its heroes, but also by the aggregate of tiny pushes of each honest worker. While every council is not immune to challenges and difficulties, don t let these make you lose sight of the hope given to us by God. Now is the time to focus not on where you ve come from or where you are at right now, but where you are heading. I admonish you to try very hard and persist to move forward. With faith and trust, He will strengthen what needs to be strengthened in you and His grace will move you to act with compassion and determination. As you continue marching forward in unison, may you be inspired by the following words of Mahatma Gandhi; A body of determined spirits fired by unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history. My brother knights, our faith and our calling demands that we must do whatever we can and wherever we can. Now is the time to do the good things you can and keep your council a shining star to be followed by the rest. Vivat Jesus! Arcie J. Lim, State Deputy British Columbia and Yukon State Council

3 October 2015 Page 3 A great sunny morning greeted the October 4 th Membership Blitz. It was a good outdoor activity to meet and greet parishioners going to and coming from mass. The blitz actually started on October 3 rd, at the Saturday anticipated mass. And, it continued at all the masses the following day. Several brothers helped out at the Information Table. Some were assigned to give that important announcement inviting men of the parish to know what it is to be a knight. Brother Knights were on hand to answer questions from parishioners who were interested to know more about the Knights of Columbus. The Info Table was well prepared with lots of brochures, magazines and promotional materials about the KoC. It was attractive. The happy faces of the member welcomed parishioners to inquire about the knights. Some of those who came to inquire were the wives inquiring on behalf of their husbands. The membership Blitz for sure was productive. While not all of those who came to inquire immediately signed up, the seed of interest was planted. Someday soon, that seed will grow. However, there were four candidates that signed up and went for the first degree exemplification on October 7, There were actually 7 candidates expected but 3 didn t make it. Hopefully, we will see them soon at the next exemplification, Nov. 23, As a Knight you can choose the projects with which you wish to be involved in within your own community. What is more, the Order is dedicated to family life and the many benefits it offers. From insurance to scholarships to service and social activities and programs, all are open to the whole family.

It was the 39 th Anniversary and Awards Night of Council 6855 graced by the presence of Worthy State Treasurer Koon Ming Lau with his lovely wife, Lady Marianne, as the keynote speaker. He spoke on the new thrust of zeroing in on young men of the parish to join the Knights. Ticket was oversold. Lively entertainment was provided by talented brothers and their families. The event s central part was the awarding of certificates of recognition and trophies to outstanding brothers who committed their time and effort to the cause of the Order. 11 October 2015 Page 11 Dear Brothers, Looking back over the past four (4) months, which has flown by oh so quickly, I have enjoyed the many challenges the office of District Deputy has afforded me. Was it always fun, no, but it was a big challenge and I accept it wholeheartedly. I thank all the Councils in the district for your support and confidence in me. For the past four (4) months, I have had the honour and indeed the privilege to serve District 23. I have enjoyed the friendship, camaraderie, hospitality and warmth of Brother Knights and their families. Your kindness, fraternity and friendship is very much appreciated. As you know, The Knights of Columbus is the largest Catholic lay order with a 1.9 million members worldwide. Because of our numbers, we have great strength and have been called the strong right arm of the catholic church. I, therefore ask you not to miss an opportunity to be an example of charity through our good works. This example of charity gives testimony to the moral values of our faith. We must serve as a beacon attracting catholic men who want to join us because of our example of good works and thus grow our membership. The two go hand in hand. Membership growth resulting from our works of charity and more works of charity resulting from our growth in membership. We need to increase our membership and not just for the sake of numbers, but for the sake of saving a catholic man and helping him to be a better catholic man for his family and his church. Again the more members we have, the more we can do, and the more effective we will be in doing what we are suppose to do as members of the Knights of Columbus. I am looking forward for the remaining period of this fraternal year as we all continue to try to increase our charitable footprint and grow the order here in our district. Hopefully, with the cooperation of all Councils, I expect even better things to come for the Knights of Columbus in District 23. So far for the first four months of this Fraternal Year, District 23 has already achieved 53% of our membership quota. This will not be possible without the support, dedication, cooperation and hard work of all the Worthy Grand Knights in District #23. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincerest gratitude to all Grand Knights, Executives and members for making this past four months so successful and again am asking your support to continue to build on this foundation. GOD BLESS Vivat Jesus Federico de Castro District Deputy#23

12 Page 12 Archbishop Duke Council 6855 Newsletter FAMILY OF THE MONTH Family of Brother Greg and Mary Jean Bautista According to Brother Greg, First, since our childhood me & my wife were raised and formed in a very religious way, with clear and great understanding of our Catholic faith. Second: I had my 1st degree last April 2015, 2nd Degree May 2015, 3rd Degree in June2015. Third: I joined the Knights of Columbus for the purpose of sharing my time and service to our church and our community. His short and brief statements are as simple and firm as his conviction to be of service to the community. He has proven this in his early months as A member of the Knights. He chairs the Food Bank Committee of the council and he has regularly delivered to the Food Bank every end of the month. Recently, together with his wife, Mary Jean, they went to Food Bank and prepared the empty bags to be distributed to the homes in Richmond. These bags were to be filled-up with food stuff and be collected at a later date. Together with some brothers, they were successful in distributing empty bags with flyers on what to put inside the bag in a designated part of the City. They went back to collect these bags after a few days and were successful in collecting more than 700 lbs of food stuff for the Food for Families Program. He is also the chairs the Vocations Committee. He is very familiar about this having been a seminarian before. He has plans on this vocation program and had the opportunity to meet with the Vocations Director of the Diocese of Vancouver to discuss his plans. The council admires his commitment and involving his wife, Mary Jean and family in his apostolate with regards to the Food Bank. He showed us how a family can work together with ease and joy in their hearts. Brother Greg and Mary Jean are awarded the Family of the Month Award for September 2015 in recognition for their efforts with the Food for Families Program. GOOD JOB, CONGRATULATIONS AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!!

15 October 2015 Page 15 FIELD AGENT S CORNER Jose P. Cabalu, FIC, CHS Field Agent Protecting Widows A Founding Goal As a member of this council, you know how important spouses can be to the charitable works of the Order. If you re married, your wife is probably involved in a few of the many events that happen each fraternal year. This support adds great value and impact to what a council can achieve. When the Order was founded in 1882, Father Michael J. McGivney and the other brave men were setting out to protect Catholic families, but especially wives and children. Today, we remain committed to this mission by offering insurance products and fraternal benefits designed with that goal in mind. One specific policy rider that you may not know about is called Spousal Waiver of Premium. This rider is unique to the Knights of Columbus philosophy of helping our widows. This rider is available on most permanent and Discoverer plans purchased at standard rates by a member and his wife on the same day. When both spouses apply, the rider provides for waiver of premiums on the spouse s contract in the event of the insured s death. Best of all, for members and spouses ages 18 to 60, this waiver can be added for no charge. The rider stays in effect until the spouse attains age 65 or certain other triggering events occur. Our products are designed with your needs and budget in mind. With a solid portfolio of life insurance, long-term care, disability income and retirement products, the Knights of Columbus can help you meet all of your financial goals. To learn more about these solutions, contact me today. I m at or jose.cabalu@kofc.org.
