2 Dear Friends From Laura Wilson, Long Beach District President, As I write this short message to all of you, I m hoping that you have been enjoying your summer with a little R & R. I can hear many of you say, Right, Laura, we are United Methodist Women, we never relax the word is not in our vocabulary. Well, I d have to agree with you and with so many events being planned, not only in your own unit and church, but District and Conference, when will we get time to breathe? But, taking the time to do just that, to take a few minutes and reflect on your day, to begin each morning with a scripture reading or song, is what we need to do. So, take a deep breath and continue reading this edition of the Long Beach District Communicator. You will find information about your upcoming District Annual Meeting at Grace UMC in Long Beach where we will be combining business (installation of officers for 2012) with mission projects (assembly of Health & Birthing kits for UMCOR), words and greetings from each officer on the District Board, as well as the nominations for the new slate of officers for Information on the Mission Road Trip on Saturday, October 1, where we will visit Toberman Neighborhood Center, Methodist Hospital and David & Margaret Home, and the Cal-Pac Annual Meeting is also included. District events for 2012 are in the planning stage. Your suggestions for speakers are so appreciated, and if your unit would like to host an event, please call Tien Vo- Doan, your Vice President. I wish to thank the Seal Beach UMW, Spanish women of Hawthorne, Lennox Tongan Unit, and Rolling Hills Sister Circle for graciously welcoming me at their gatherings. Good News, the Hawthorne Spanish UMW will be charted on 8/13/2011. Join us in a celebration of this new unit at 11:00 a.m. I had the opportunity to attend Annual Conference as your president of the Long Beach District. I must say it is a huge undertaking for so many people to coordinate this event. I was proud to be just a small part of it. I m a rather conservative person in many aspects of my life, including my religious beliefs. I was very dismayed by several resolutions which were supported. You can review all the resolutions by going online to 2

3 The 2011 SOCM at Biola was great, even though construction was taking place. Again, an event that takes so many women to coordinate for a whole year. The Long Beach District was well represented and it s always great to go to SOCM to see old friends and to make new ones. I was truly blessed by attending the study on Haiti, led by Rev. Lynne Austin. She and her husband, Dr. Ray Aller, who also taught the Haiti Study, have volunteered there before and after the earthquake. So, they brought a very personal aspect to the study. Special thanks to Jane Stewart, Lakewood First UMW President, who created and designed the SOCM directional signs. Several of these will be displayed at our District Events. Change is in the air for United Methodist Women, come to the Annual Meeting in September when our Cal-Pac Conference President, Leanne Nakanishi, will share the info! Well, so much for a short message! Take care and see you soon! 8 UMW, The following article was sent to me this summer. The author is unknown, but I think it has a profound message and I would like to share it with all of you. We Live by Faith and Not by Sight Just up the road from my home is a field, with two horses in it. From a distance, each horse looks like any other horse. But if you stop your car, or are walking by, you will notice something quite amazing...looking into the eyes of one horse will disclose that he is blind. His owner has chosen not to have him put down, but has made a good home for him. This alone is amazing. If you stand nearby and listen, you will hear the sound of a bell. Looking around for the source of the sound, you will see that comes from the smaller horse in the field. Attached to the horse's halter is a small bell. It lets the blind friend know where the other horse is, so he can follow. As you stand and watch these two friends, you'll see that the horse with the bell is always checking on the blind horse, and that the blind horse will listen for the bell and then slowly walk to where the other horse is, trusting that he will not be led astray. When the horse with the bell returns to the shelter of the barn each evening, it stops occasionally and looks back, making sure that the blind friend isn't too far behind to hear the bell. Like the owners of these two horses, God does not throw us away just because we are not perfect or because we have problems or challenges. He watches over us and even brings others into our lives to help us when we are in need. Sometimes we are the blind horse, Being guided by the little ringing bell of those who God places in our lives. Other times we are the guide horse, helping other to find their way. Good friends are like that...you may not always see them, but you know they are always there. Please listen for my bell and I'll listen for yours. Be kinder than necessary...everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. Live simply, Love generously, Care deeply Speak kindly...and leave the rest to God. For WE WALK BY FAITH AND NOT BY SIGHT. June Williams Spiritual Growth Coordinator Long Beach District 8

9 From your L.B District Secretary, Take advantage of this summer time to prepare for our busy Annual Meeting on September 17 th. If you need help in transporting your unit s material donations for the Health and Birth Kits please contact your liaisons. Thank you for keeping me informed about your officer changes and new addresses, phone numbers and s. On July 3 rd all available District Officers of United Methodist Women gathered at Inglewood Lennox Tongan s sanctuary for their United Methodist Women s meeting. This was my first opportunity to worship and enjoy the fellowship of this vibrant church. I met old and new Sisters in Christ, praised God as they worshipped with joyful songs and learned together what we are doing and how we can help each other. Their gracious hospitality was like a sweet smelling incense and still lingers comfortingly in my memory. Thank you to all of you! Remember to send me your church events so other churches can join with you. It s not too early to let me know about your year-end events. My second knee replacement surgery on July 5th went well and I have had a good recovery. The Lord has been very good to me! Thank you all for your prayers and cards. Your District Secretary, Neva B Johnson From the office of E & I Shalom, ladies I would like to share with you all the new items on the mission today sheets. We as a conference have added 4 new areas that we feel are important to our conference. They are: The unit will add a Young Women s or Youth Circle, the unit will add a Language Group Circle, at least two members of the unit will attend any Young Women s Event in the California-Pacific Conference, and at least five members of the unit will attend any event with emphasis on UMW 101 or any Language event in the California-Pacific Conference. I hope that each unit in the Long Beach District will achieve at least one of these new goals this year, and by next year one more. Angie McCard 9

10 Greetings Sisters in Action, It was a joy seeing so many of you at the May Long Beach District UMW dinner and meeting. How wonderful that many of you took the time to visit the Fair Trade and Social Action displays. In case you didn t obtain a copy of the Fair Trade Pledge, you will find it at the end of this article. Many of you took the cards for Fair Trade markers for supermarkets and cards for managers. I hope you have been able to make inroads in being able to purchase Fair Trade products from your local supermarkets. If you are a Social Action Chair and have not received either s or hard copies of the Social Action Alerts from me, please let me know. We are able to make our voices heard when we contact our legislators regarding issues of importance to women and children. We are their advocates and these Alerts provide information on the issues and steps to take. Thank you for following up on these Social Action Alerts, Poverty Alert (support for H.R. 350 AND H.R. 377 AND H.R. 11 and S. 922) and A Pathway to Freedom for Victims of Human Trafficking (support S596) Action Items: Our Priorities for Mission Chairwomen on Social Action: 1. Health Care/Maternal & Child 2. Economic Justice/Human Trafficking 3. Food Security Please continue to study these concerns and share your Social Action Alerts with the women in your unit and church. Blessings in all that you do. Mary Ross Mission Coordinator for Social Action FAIR TRADE PLEDGE According to our United Methodist Social Principles*, we affirm all persons as equally valuable in the sight of God. We therefore work toward societies in which each person s value is recognized, maintained and strengthened. World Trade of agricultural products needs to be based on fair trade and prices, based on the costs of sustainable production methods Buying Fair Trade Certified products is one sure way consumers can use their buying power to make a contribution to the common good. Consumers should not only seek out companies whose product lines reflect a strong commitment to these standards, but should also encourage expanded corporate participation in the Fair Trade market. We are called upon to organize to achieve these goals and to express dissatisfaction with harmful economic, social, or ecological practices through such appropriate methods as boycott, letter writing, corporate resolution and advertisement. In light of these principles, I pledge to be an active Fair Trade consumer. I also pledge that I will assist my United Methodist Women s Unit and my United Methodist congregation to understand Fair Trade and to be Fair Trade consumers. 12 Recap 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 Membership, Nurture, Outreach Hello Friends, This month I would like to recap the last 4 years of Membership, nurture and Outreach. It has been an exciting 4 years for Al and me. Not long after I took this position I found I was losing some of my eyesight and it would be unsafe for me to drive. I was very distressed as I was looking forward to being a part of UMW District and now was not going to be able to do so. My Husband reassured me that it would not be a problem as he was willing to drive me to any meeting or church that I needed to attend. He assured me he would take a book or newspaper with him so he would not be bored. That first day I watched as he set down on the back row of the church. He wanted to see what UMW was all about. Every once in a while I would look back and to my surprise he was still there. On the way home that day he said he had a great time and was not bored at all. In fact he said he had enjoyed everything about our meetings In the last 4 years we have been privileged to meet hundreds of God loving, hardworking Ladies and Gentlemen. It has been a life changing event for both of us. Each of you added something special to our lives. We humbly thank you for making us feel so welcome at your meetings and Churches. We will always treasure each memory. I would like to share some information with you about our district, UMW and a very talented lady named Johanna Howard that brought MNO into the digital world. With her help we finally have all forms and information on the computer making it easier to keep accurate totals. With the combined effort of each UMW Unit sending us their information, Johanna writing and teaching all of us to use the new programs, the Conference keeping last year s information on your forms coming from the computer it became much easier. A big HUG and thanks to Johanna our MNO Angel. We also had the privilege of chartering 4 churches as follows Carson Zion Korean UMW bringing in a total of 85 new members Huntington Park UMW total of 46 new members Torrance Korean UMW total of 24 new members 2010 Gardens Kum Ran UMW total of 220 new members 2011 I almost forgot to mention that we will be re-chartering Hawthorne UMW this summer. So this will give us a grant total of 5 new units. When I received the computer totals this year from Conference UMW I was thrilled. With all of your help we had become the Cal-Pac District with the highest membership total. A big Hallelujah, thank you Lord and United Methodist Women!!! Great Job. I shall miss talking to you about MNO but I hope to continue as the E & I for the District next year. Al and I look forward to a new adventure with God and all of you. Thanks again. 13 The Secretary of Program Resource News What a blessing that my two girls Priscilla & Grace Tuuholoaki and I were able to attend the School of Christian Mission We were impressed with choreography that went in to ensuring that all parts ran smoothly. We enjoyed it and the girls learned about the theme "All things made new - and asked what is new? We loved the plenary time and were able to track our progress when we saw "road signs". These are meant to let us think about the direction in which God leads us personally as an organization. These signs have reminded us day by day what we learn on the "Spiritual Journey"! We want to share this: God's challenges Ahead: We must proceed carefully and listen and watch intently because God may be directing us into ministries and mission we've never imagined. Beware - Hidden stories and Roles: We can think of how our personal stories influence who we are and how we see things. Also look at how roles can be intentional or inadvertent - that we have played in issues of our day. Slow - For the love of God's Children: "Slow" children at play, or "slow", we love our children. We should consider slowing down to be aware God's children so that no one can be hurt. It would be sign of "Love" that we may learn something. Awareness saves lives: What if we put aside our agenda and be aware of others through their life stories, dreams, hopes and needs. Maybe we would be more effective in mission and justice. Bridges connect People: Too often we base our thought and opinions on what the news says instead of hearing the other person's story. We may build bridges that allow us to do things together. Be prepare to stop: We may have to stop, evaluate your feelings, what it would take to heal or reconcile with others or God. We may have to stop, go, stop, to until you have reached the place where you can start restoring things to right relations. U-turn Ahead: Sometimes we need to go back to the beginning to tell the truth again, listen to more stories, and think deeply about God's children and humanness. Then we can move forward again. Proceed with directions: Once we've gone through the process of truth - telling, encountering humanness and listening then it become easier to follow God's direction for our own lives. That direction may be different than other people's direction. Road Out Ahead: We didn t think that restoring justice and right relations would be that easy. There are always potholes and areas that need fixed. Some may be in us, some maybe with the organization, church or society. Some may be hidden. U - turn: We may have reached our intended destination forgiveness, reconciliation with another, restoration of right relationship or if we have to repeat again. Forgiveness, reconciliation and restoration is a process that can take a lifetime or beyond! Well, I am back to my duties and I encourage those who willing to serve as a Secretary of Program Resource in your local unit. Please join us and we can train you to do new things, for this program leads to action! This is a reminder for those who continue to keep up the SPR's role in Promoting the Reading Program. Get cool answers for burning questions, Promotion Ideas and how to participate, Hot off the press by using the right tool for this responsibility. Come and see us on September 17th, 2011 at Grace UMC. Thank you and God bless you! Yours faithfully, Vika V. Tuuholoaki LB District Secretary of Program Resource 13
