1 Loving People into the Kingdom of God in the Heart of Catawba County First United Methodist Church Newton, North Carolina First United Methodist Church exists to glorify God as we Welcome persons into the body of Christ, help them Grow as disciples of Jesus Christ and Send them to serve in the world. New Sermon Series beginning July 6th Jonah: The God of Second Chances What do you think of when you hear the name Jonah? Many people think of a whale. Yet the story of Jonah is much more than a great fishing tale about how someone survived in a whale s belly for 3 days before being vomited onto dry ground. The story of Jonah is one of the most delightful and thoughtprovoking stories in the Bible. It is a story about God offering second chances. It s about God offering a second chance to a group of people that many, including Jonah, deemed not worth saving. Moreover, it is the story of God giving Jonah a second chance in spite of his disobedience and recalcitrance. Join us through the month of July as we explore the story of Jonah and discover anew God s mercy and the gift of second chances.

2 WELCOME persons into the body of Christ College Coffee & Desserts Pastors David and Lara (Willis) Greene are inviting any college age student members to join them for coffee and desserts on Tuesday, July 15th at 7:00pm at Zanders. The church is glad to see you back in town for the summer and we want to take this opportunity to check in and see how things are going in your life. No need to RSVP, just come on to Zanders! July 8th 1:00pm Gomedela room This is for both men and women; you are encouraged to bring a friend. Twelve games will be played and prizes and refreshments furnished. Bingo lovers come and win. UP IN OUT participants invited the community to Vacation Bible School Ladies Tea A Ladies Tea in the Garden was held on Wednesday, May 21, Members of First United Methodist Church Newton and their friends from the community enjoyed a great time of fellowship, a wonderful lunch, and a wide selection of tea. Gail McRee presented a program titled The Hats We Wear and the children from the Pre-K class of The Newton Methodist Preschool provided entertainment.

3 GROW as disciples of Jesus Christ Children's Ministries Summer Sunday School: GROW- God Rocks Our World Kindergarten-5th grade July's theme will be Jonah and the Big Fish, Jonah 1-4. What a great topic for the hot month of July. We will learn through art, music, cooking and video. Remember to continue to bring in your donations for the Clean Water for Kory Wawanaca Children's Home. Let s see that gauge GROW! Parents Note: Please remember to pick up your children from their Sunday School room by 10:45 am, so that our teachers can meet their families for service. Thank you. Thank You, THANK YOU, Thank You Vacation Bible School was a great success and we could not have done it without the help from the congregation and community. Your financial, physical and prayerful support was very generous. The children and youth of First Methodist thank you. For Parents and their Preschoolers K-5th UP IN OUT July 23rd FIRST FRIENDS July 16th 10:00 am to 12:30 pm Activity Room Parents with infants through 4 years old are invited to come and meet other families to play and have a picnic style lunch together. We will share in games, crafts and music. Lemonade and paper products will be provided, so pack a lunch and come meet some First Friends. 9:00 am - 12:00 pm Activity Room Children K-5th grade are invited to participate in UP IN OUT UP - we glorify God IN - we play games to get to know one another OUT - we do a service/ community project to help others UP IN OUT is FUN, FUN, FUN!

4 SEND them to serve in the world YOUTH SUMMER HAPPENINGS! This month we have a wonderful group of Youth and Adult Leaders traveling to Topsail Beach, NC where we will work alongside existing mission and outreach ministries to serve in local neighborhoods through hands-on projects such as painting, wheelchair ramps and other basic repairs. We are so excited to have the opportunity to show the love of Christ to those in need. Also, on July 18th, we will be traveling to the mountains of Virginia to participate in Wilderness Trail. Our Youth and Adult leaders will hike on trails for 40 miles! Students and leaders are encouraged to step out of their comfort zone and experience the Christian journey at a deeper level. We are so proud of our youth group and their participation in this life changing Christian experience! Please keep us in your prayers as we represent FUMC Newton through our mission work and travels this summer! On Saturday, August 16 our youth will be attending the Hickory Crawdads Game and Christian Concert featuring Kutless The event starts at 6:00pm and tickets are $12 each. The school will no longer need to rent chairs for school events thanks to the donation. WOW Vacation Bible School was a huge success with over 86 children and adults studying the bible, learning how to worship God, fellowship with each other, and take God s love out into their community.
