2013 For Members and Friends of St. Paul s UCC Fleetwood Telling Our Story In my parents home there is a wall that is covered with pictures. The pictures tell the story of generations of the Morris/Raines family. Both of my great grandparents are there as are my grandparents and some of their children. All of my brothers and sisters are accounted for; there are pictures of when we graduated from high school or when we got married. And then there are the grandchildren and the great grandchildren. They basically took over the wall! When I go home it is good to see the pictures the very old ones and the very new. The pictures tell my story and the story of my family. In an effort to tell our story, St. Paul s is creating a new church pictorial directory, and I hope you and your family will be willing to participate. All members who sign up for a photo session will receive a free 8x10 portrait (a twenty-five dollar value) and a free directory. If you have family or friends who would also like to have portraits taken, they will also be entitled to a free 8x10, but will not receive a directory unless they are members of St. Paul s. The dates for the Lifetouch photos are May 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11, as well as June 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. Make an appointment for your photo session online by going to our website, stpaulsfleetwood.org, and clicking on the link for the directory. If you do not have internet access, you will be able to sign up in the narthex before and after services beginning April 7th. If you need to make an appointment but cannot do it at church or online, please call Lois Stilwell. Printed information on the pictures and directory will be available in the narthex soon. If you have a question, please call either Lois Stilwell at or Sandi Stern at Here s some good news about signing up for your photo session: by providing an address to Lifetouch, they will send you a coupon for ten dollars off any photo package. The coupon will be sent to your address approximately one week before your appointment. Simply print it out and bring it with you to redeem at the time of your session. If you do not have an address, ask a friend who does if you can give his or her address to Lifetouch for your coupon. An additional way to save is to participate in Lifetouch s Feed the Need promotion. If you bring in a canned fruit or vegetable to donate to the Fleetwood Food Pantry at the time of your session, you will receive a fivedollar coupon which can be used in addition to the ten-dollar online coupon. Then, for example, a twenty-five-dollar set of prints would only cost ten dollars total. Price sheets will be available in the narthex and through the St. Paul s website. Blessings, Pastor Pat and Lois Stilwell

Senior Spotlight This month our highlighted senior is Joyce Laucks, age 80, who lives at 15 N. Richmond St. Born Joyce Larue Kurzweg to Philemon and Sulie Kurzweg, Joyce first grew up in the Hyde Park and Temple area. Joyce graduated from Muhlenberg Township High School in Attending Kutztown State College, she graduated in 1954 and began teaching second grade at Buttonwood and Pear Elementary School in Reading. While in college, Joyce met Jim Laucks on a blind date to Sunnybrook to hear one of her favorite bands, Vaughn Monroe. After dancing the night away, the couple continued to date. The rest is history with the two marrying in August of Joyce became a full time homemaker with the arrival of their first child, Heather, followed by two sons, Peter and J.C. The Laucks family eventually settled in their family home on Girard Avenue in Hyde Park where Joyce resided until 2 ½ years ago. Unfortunately Jim died unexpectedly in In addition to her three children, Joyce now has 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild (with one more on the way). Prior to joining our church, the Laucks were active members of Alsace Lutheran Church in Hyde Park. Unhappy over some changes thatt were taking place there, Joan Borrell, a now deceased St. Paul s member and a good friend of Joyce s, encouraged them to try St. Paul s. Joyce already knew Rev. Paul and Barbara Hetrich from high school. After visiting our church, Joyce explained Everyone so was extremely friendly and accepting that we felt at home right away. That was thirty- the five years ago, just in time for Peter to join confirmation class. Peter and his family continue as members of our church. Joyce feels she has always been connected to Fleetwood. Her paternal grandparents, Wilhelmina and Franz Kurzweg lived on Pine Street. Often visiting them while she was growing up, Joyce always felt Fleetwood was home. Two of her college friends, Joan Borrelll and Jeannette Burkert, were from Fleetwood as well. Besides being a homemaker, Joyce enjoyed sewing and used to make most of her clothes. Currently, having moved from a larger house, she is adjusting to her smaller apartment. As she puts it, I spend a lot of time looking for innovative places to store things. Over the years Joyce was a member of the choir and Women s Guild. Attending church regularly, you can usually find Joyce sitting with her son Peter and his family on their favorite pew in the rear of the narthex. Asking Joyce about her favorite church memory, she thought for a while and answered with her pleasant smile I like everything related to the church. What a positive outlook from one happy senior! Aren t we glad that Joan Borrell asked Joyce Laucks to visit St. Paul s? Interview and article by Dori Hoch A Message From Pastor Kinney: Important words that you must say when being admitted to the hospital are: Saint Paul's United Church of Christ Fleetwood The person taking your registration information may vaguely say, "Religion?" You will have only one chance to get it on your registration. You will have many chances to state your name, birthday and insurance numbers. Please do it right and help your pastors do their job. Thanks! FRIEND, INC. Once again, Friend, Inc. is holding its annual auction on Saturday, April 27 at Beltzner Hall in the Kutztown Fairgrounds, with doors opening at 5:30 pm. Come share our Country Picnic, which will include a catered sit down dinner, and the chance to bid on many wonderful items (especially desserts!) which will be auctioned. The cost is $35/person, and tickets may be ordered either at the Friend office, or online at All proceeds go to our helping individuals and families in Northeastern Berks County.

COMING SOON Spring house cleaning time is here!! Tell your friends and neighbors to save their infant, children and adult clothing for our sale. SALE DATES AND TIMES Friday May 31 8:00 a.m. to 7: :00 p.m. Saturday June 1 8:00 a.m. to Noon Where St Paul s UCC Social Room Mission News Helping Hands During the month of April, Joanne Knoll will be taking a break from the Helping Hands coordinator role. The Helping Hands volunteer coordinator will change depending on the week between Sharon Dreibelbis ( ) and Carol Strause ( ). Please check the weekly bulletin or call the church office ( ) to determine the current coordinator. Fleetwood Food Pantry On Thursday, March 7th, 110 families were served at the pantry. It was St. Paul s Lutheran Churches turn; there was a wonderful turn out of volunteers including many of our adults and youth. The personal care items collected from our shopping cart were distributed and were well received. Many thanks go to our dedicated volunteers and those who donated items. Together we can make a difference. The next regular distribution will be held on Thursday, April 4 th from 3:30-6:00 pm. While it is not our church's official turn, volunteers are always welcomed especially youth to bag orders and to carry them to the client's cars. Plastic bags are needed to pack orders. Please drop plastic bags in the church kitchen. The Confirmation class cooked for Opportunity House in March. The Menu included penne pasta with a choice of meatballs or Italian sausage sauce, butter bread, mixed veggies, homemade brownies. Dawn Pavlick, Max Pavlick, Jenna Schumacher, Katie Kachel, Erin Bogacki, Max Ruemmler, Rachel Bergeman, Klarissa Pierce, and John Folk served the meal. Thank you to all who participated. AED and CPR TRAINING Two training programs for AED and CPR certification are being held in the near future. This is a wonderful opportunity for those who have had the training to update their skills and for others, perhaps those new to the Consistory to lean these valuable skills. We have been fortunate in never having had to use our AED, but if the occasion arises it would be unfortunate if no trained personnel were available. The programs are as follows: Saturday April 6 (Announced in church bulletin) Zion Spies Lutheran Church, 310 Spies Rd. 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM Cost $40.00 Call Anna Wingert A second program is planned, but not yet scheduled for St. Peter s U.C.C., Molltown. Times and cost will be as above. If interested, call Laurie Ayrton: Both programs are cheaper than most and do not include a written test. Maurice sends out a huge Thank you! He wants everyonee to know he is thankful for all the head scratches and pats he received during the month of March. The gestures made him feel warm, welcomed, and right at home. Of course he also thanks everyone for the canned fruits and vegetables that filled the grocery cart. He knows it is just as important to feed the families at the food pantry as it is for him to receive the loving attention from his St. Paul s family and friends. The mission committee and Maurice know that the problem of limited supplies of food items continues to exist at the Greater Berks Food Bank. That is why the suggestion is to carry on with our collection of canned fruits and vegetables through the month of April. We are hoping to supplement the Food Bank order with our cart full of fruits and vegetables. These cans willl be part of the food pantry distribution on Thursday, May 2, From the conversations he has been overhearing, Maurice knows warmer weather is on the way to Berks County. He can t wait. He has been happy in the narthex during these cold winter days but he is looking forward to a few chances to get outside and see more of Fleetwood. As the weather improves and you begin your outdoor activities maybe you would consider asking Maurice to join you for a bike ride, a hike, or a tree climbing race.

Respectfully Submitted, Mrs. Peggy Nahrgang, School Director Consistory Notes for April 2013 The Consistory held its regular monthly meeting on Monday, 11 March In addition to the treasurer s report, which was presented by Bill Shollenberger, the group also received reports from those standing committees that have met since the February meeting. The Property Committee reported that they are assessing what will be needed to address issues with the boiler, which is approximately 55 years old. They are engaging the services of a professional firm to determine what the best course of action will be and will report the findings to the Consistory at a future meeting. The problem will need to be resolved before the winter season begins. Consistory members learned about two opportunities to acquire AED and CPR training that will be available in the near future. While some members of the group have already been trained, a good number have not, and it was agreed that such training would be highly beneficial. The group also reviewed ushering needs for the upcoming Holy Week, Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday services. The next regular meeting of the Consistory will be held on Monday, 8 April 2013, at 7 p.m. in the lounge off the narthex. Any member of the congregation is invited to attend. As always, we thank you, our St. Paul s family, for the opportunity to serve you as together all of us serve our risen Savior, Jesuss Christ. Easter Blessings, Mary Ann Hayes

The lieutenant s name was Louis Zamperini. In boyhood, he d been a cunning and incorrigible delinquent, breaking into houses, brawling, and fleeing his home to ride the rails. As a teenager, he had channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics and within sight of the four- minute mile. But when war had come, the athlete had become an airman, embarking on a journey that led to his doomed flight, a tiny raft, and a drift into the unknown. On Tuesday, April 30, 2013, we will meet and discuss Unbroken by Laura Hildebrand in the church lounge at 7 p.m. Synopsis of Unbroken by Laura Hildebrand On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane s bombardier, who was strugglingg to a life raft and pulling himself aboard. So began one of the most extraordinary odysseys of the Second World War. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a foundering raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will. In her long-awaited new book, Laura Hillenbrand writes with the same rich and vivid narrative voice she displayed in Seabiscuit. Telling an unforgettable story of a man s journey into extremity, Unbroken is a testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit. Source: Amazon.com
