Bach David Cullen guitar (Congregation Standing) Leader: Today is Rally Day Sunday the day in which we regather after a variety of summer experiences, celebrate that we are part of God s community. Just like a building under construction, our community is growing and changing. New people come with fresh ideas and experiences. Long-time members share their insights and commitment. Every one of us young and old helps build community. Welcome to our community still under construction, working towards a world based on God s love!) Leader: Let us worship God! We open our hearts to God. Leader: It is good to worship and praise God together! Let us open our hearts to one another. Leader: We are God s community under construction. Let us prepare ourselves for new life. Educators: Educators: Students: A covenant is a special agreement we make, with God as our partner. God made a covenant agreement and promise with Noah, with the rainbow as a symbol. Moses and the Hebrew people made a covenant with God through the 10 Commandments. Jeremiah talked of a covenant that would be written on people s hearts. As Christians this covenant was made plain to us in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Through him, we know that God s covenant promise is for all people. Today we renew our own covenant with God and each other in our Sunday School and Church community. Would the Sunday School teachers, helpers, and administrators please rise and share your covenant for the year ahead Having prayerfully considered the duties and responsibilities of your ministry, are you prepared to serve? We promise before God to give our time, our effort, and our love to nurture the growth of those in our care. Do you promise to exercise your ministry diligently and faithfully, showing forth the love of Christ? We do, relying on God s grace. Would the studentsamong us please rise and share your covenant for the year ahead. (this is for all ages children adults) We promise before God to grow in love and faith, and to help others also grow in love and faith. We promise to support our teachers and use the gifts God has given us to participate and be active learners as we share with them in this ministry. Members of this household of faith, you have heard the promises of our brothers and sisters in Christ who have answered God s call to teach as well as the promises of students. Would all who are able please rise and share your covenant for the year ahead. We, the people of St. Paul s UCC, seek to live in God s way. We promise to pray for and support the teachers, children, and youth in this important work. We promise before God to work together in building a community of
2 4 love and faith. May we build a solid foundation of trust in God and love for one another. And may God bless us and guide us in our growing together. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen INTROIT PROCESSIONAL HYMN There s A Wideness in God s Mercy No. 23 PASSING THE PEACE The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. Let us share signs of Christ s peace with one another. JOYS AND CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH CENTERING PRELUDE "Kum Ba Yah" Children s Choir David Cullen guitar (Congregation Standing) We gather in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. All: (singing) Amen! Today we gather in God s house. We come from small towns and farms, from the city and villages. We are God s children. God knows our names and God knows our every want and need. We are here to worship God; the God of our mothers and fathers; the God of the saints who have gone before us. We are here again to listen to the promise of New Life given to us in the person of Jesus Christ, our Lord and our Savior. Let us worship the Still Speaking God! 3 All(singing): Savior, like a shepherd lead us, much we need Thy tender care; In Thy pleasant pastures feed us, for our use Thy folds prepare. Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus! Thou hast bought us, Thine we are. Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus! Thou hast bought us, Thine we are. All(singing) PENITENCE You are kind, God! Please have pity on me. You are always merciful! Please wipe away my sins. Turn your eyes from my sin and cover my guilt. Create pure thoughts in me and make me faithful again. Psalm 51:1, 9-10; PWM We are Thine, Thou dost befriend us, be the Guardian of our way; Keep Thy flock, from sin defend us, seek us when we go astray. Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus! Hear, O hear us when we pray. Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus! Hear, O hear us when we pray. Let us confess our sins. All: Wash me clean from all of my sin and guilt. I know about my sins and I cannot forget my terrible guilt. You are really the one I have sinned against; I have disobeyed you and have done wrong. Hear my silent confession. Psalm 51:2-4a; PWM All(singing) (Silent prayers of confession) It is through my faith in you, Forgiving God, that my guilt is washed away. You love me so much that you seek me when I am lost. You loved the world so much that you sent your only Son into the world to save it. The Lord is my Shepherd I shall not want and my sins are forgiven! PWM Thou hast promised to receive us, poor and sinful though we be; Thou hast mercy to relieve us, grace to cleanse and pow r to free. Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus! We will early turn to Thee. Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus! We will early turn to Thee. Let us say again what it is that we believe.
9 4 I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen (The congregation may be seated.) OLD TESTAMENT Jeremiah 4:11-12, OT pg. 702 EPISTLE First Timothy 1:12-17 NT pg. 208 Choral Response: There is a Savior, what joys express, His eyes are mercy, His word is rest. For each tomorrow, for yesterday, There is a Savior who lights our way. SPECIAL MUSIC We are a Church by Jay Althouse We are a church. We are a congregation, and within this house of God we feel His mercy and grace. We are a church. We are a true foundation, and we meet to worship in this place, in this beautiful place. We are a church, we are a congregation, and we come to worship Christ, our Lord, today. 5 SERMON TEXT Luke 15:1-10 NT pg. 78 (Congregation Stands) Choral Response: O God, You are my God, and I will ever praise You. O God, You are my God, and I will ever praise You. I will seek you in the morning, and I will learn to walk in Your ways; And step by step You lead me, and I will follow You all my days. (Congregation May Be Seated) SERMON Lost and Found (Congregation Stands) RESPONSIVE HYMN Amazing Grace, How Sweet The Sound No. 547 (Congregation May Be Seated) PASTORAL PRAYER AND LORD S PRAYER-Remembering 9-11 For the gift of life, O Lord, we give you thanks. Infuse us with your light, and make us vehicles of that life-giving light. For all who live with fear, anxiety and uncertainty. Comfort and strengthen them, we pray, that they may know the healing power of your love. For the leaders of nations and all who are in positions of political authority, that they may hear your voice above all others and act in such a way that brings about healing and reconciliation. For those who mourn and wonder, "O God, where were you?" May they know your presence and see how you use something that was meant for evil to bring about something that can be used for good. For our enemies, the ones for whom we would rather not pray, and for ourselves: lead us from prejudice to truth; deliver us from hatred and revenge; give us courage to overcome our fears and build bridges, that we may stand before you reconciled through Christ our Lord.
10 6 We remember with affection those who now rest from their labors, especially those we name before you now, on our lips or in our hearts.... Keep us in fellowship with all your saints and bring us at last to the joy of your heavenly kingdom.
