1 Lions Club International, District 4-A1 Vol. 56 Issue 5, May 6, 2014 Mission Statement of lions Club International: to create and foster a spirit of understanding among all people for humanitarian needs by providing voluntary service through community involvement and international cooperation BE A CHAMPION District Governor Lewis Tom Bauder Here we are at the end of another year. Your first Vice District Governor is preparing to go to Canada and to be sworn in as your Governor. We certainly wish him and Barbara, the best in the coming term. While thinking about the coming times, each club, which means you as members, need to work on getting new members, so District 4-A1 will continue to be the best District in MD4. Each person that you meet is a potential member, JUST ASK. The District Convention was a success. Thank you to all who helped made this a success. The next District meeting will be at the Linden Club House, I hope to see you there. I would like to thank my Cabinet, the PDGs, my committee chairs, and especially, CS Sue for all the work that you do for District 4-A1. The Governor gets to sit at the head table, and has the ride of their life, but it is all those others who give of their time that make this possible. Please continue with your service and thank you again. 2 Page 2 District Governor Elect Kent Christensen My how the time has flown by. Here we are counting down the days before I leave for Toronto Canada and the International Convention. We have just completed the District Convention. I hope all who attended had a chance to talk with the ID John Harper from Wyoming and 1VDG Mary Rynearson from 4-L6 (Imperial County). I want you to reserve the date for next year s convention. It will be at the same location as this year, the Marriott San Ramon. The dates are April 16-19, I have some ideas to add to the excitement next year. I am planning on a great convention for next year. Mark your calendars to remember the date. I have been diligently working on my Cabinet. Although it is not complete yet I have most positions filled. Of particular importance are the following: Ken Harrison Cabinet Secretary kharrison@mercedbreakfastlions.org Don Weber Bulletin Contest dweber130@gmail.com Chris Baker Top Club chrisbaker@digitalmirrors.com Please start now to forward you bulletins and activity reports to them. Again I want to encourage everyone to attend the officer training to be held in Linden on the 9 th and 10 th of May. There will be a presentation by my guest DGE Larry Marcum and PDG Don Allen regarding the difference between a Guide Dog and an LPPCI Dog. Again this is Officer and member training. Get your clubs off to a good start and get those top club points. District Meetings will be as follows next year, barring any major problems: August 15 & 16, 2014 Turlock Medic Alert November 14 & 15, 2014 Mountain Region March 6 & 7, 2015 San Joaquin Region May 1 & 2, 2015 Yosemite Region Camp Pacifica Mark your calendars know to keep those date open. Cabinet Secretary Ken Harrison will be contacting club secretaries to start confirming the dates for the Governor Visitations. Please respond quickly to him and mark your date down be sure to let incoming President know. We would like to include them in the directory that is being worked on. Be sure to send any dates for events during the year to him so they may be included in the calendar. If you know your dates now please send them in. It is also very important to finish your PU 101. This is where the information for the directories comes from. It would help if secretaries would update member information to include addresses and telephone numbers. Please update your member information. Thank you for the honor of serving the lions of District 4-A1. DGE Kent B. Christensen

3 Page 3 Message from 2 nd Vice District Governor Ron Raines April 30, 2014 I shall begin by thanking all of you, proud Lions of District 4-A1 for an outstanding district convention in San Ramon! Our guest 2 nd VDG Macy Mak-Chan from San Francisco Chinatown Lions could not stop complementing our district for our wonderful convention and broad stream of district activities. I hope you had a chance to meet and hear her brief speech on Sunday morning. She is quite a firecracker, if I may say. Her husband Lion Michael took over a thousand pictures of the convention and put the best online for us all to enjoy and have. Go to our district website and look for the link. Hospitality rooms is a tradition at convention, and my wife, Lion Barbara, did a fantastic job for us Friday night. Thanks to her and our clubs, Greenhills and Le Grand, for supporting and assisting us. Of course the other hospitality rooms were outstanding! I hope you did not miss the wonderful food and drink. We voted to choose a convention site for 2016, and I am pleased to thank you for selecting Doubletree by Hilton in Rohnert Park. I will be working hard on this for the next two years. No, that is not Orianne in the photo with our convention guests Macy and Michael. That is her sister Olani, who is being raised by PDG Don Allen. Orianne was on vacation at the Puppy Spa, but she has returned home from her three-week stay at the CCI campus in Santa Rosa. Congratulations to Governor-elect Kent Christensen! His family presented him with his first Melvin Jones Fellowship on Sunday morning. It was an emotional high for us all to share and enjoy. My wife and I have traveled with the Christensen s on many club visitations this past year, and look forward to joining them on their grand tour as the visiting governor s team. We have become close friends with Kent and Barbara, and are confident this will be an extraordinary year for our district under their leadership. more photos at
