President s Report President Brian announced the Board s decision to elevate Lloyd Yelland to Honorary Member status, recognising his long and loyal service to Rotary in PNG and in Queensland. 3

4 President Brian had recently attended a meeting of Canberra Fyshwick Rotary Club and returned with their exchanged banner and best wishes. Fyshwick is apparently noted as being the porn capital of Australia President Brian saw no evidence to support this claim during his visit. We have received a kind note from Patsy Baumann recalling Stuey s happy times in Broadbeach Rotary Club and all the happy times she and Stuey had shared with their Rotary friends. We have also received a letter of appreciation from Parkinson s Society of Queensland, thanking us for our $1,000 donation in memory of Stuey. President Brian had attended the Rotary National Conference in Canberra, since the last meeting and will report more fully later is the number to call to book your blood donation it is no harder than having a haircut and each donation can save 3 lives, how can eligible Rotarians not do it??? stocks are low so please step up. Bunyips Peter Gowans, Jane Wright and Klaus Axmann assisted the Sergeant in collecting his ill gotten gains. Kevin Wilkins won the raffle, No sign of a Joker Webmaster Jim wins the Heads & Tails The Big Debate The Great Debate If you were not present, you missed a great floor show!! -- Two Teams of three speakers, stood and entertained us both "On" and also "Off" the chosen topic Monarchists Vs Republicans Prince Charles picture looked down on the proceedings, from the heights of his mother`s stand---he quickly vanished at the conclusion of the debate. The speakers--kevin Wilkins, Harold Busch, and Nathan Blair Possibly for the Government, While Bob Jordan [who defected], Bill Rex and Dick Holland,may have represented an opposition. What Happened--- " Resetting the Stop Watch proved too difficult for the time keeper" "Bob wanted to know how many in the audience were of the Roman Catholic faith and how many were Protestant. Since there were more Protestants--he said that there was no need for the debate!!" He ended up voting for the affirmative, after some of the audience could not decide on their faith." "The head of state should be selected by popular election." "Countries with Crown Monarchist Leadership, are more successful and enjoy a higher standard of living." "That Monarchist leadership is out of date." We could not be sure what Dick said--he claimed that he had not started on his subject matter, when he was repeatedly gonged out. Harold--the old smoothy--while standing low to the lectern--- spoke of the" Republican Rabble", in slow deep diction---surprisingly reminiscent of a tall Prime Minister of the 70`s who found himself 5

6 being ungraceful to his old mate, the Governor General, ---Who actually sacked him at the time, when the G.G. happened to be sober!!" The preparation and rehearsals that the 2 teams obviously engaged in, prior to the serious debate, was quite noteworthy. Well done, guys we enjoyed your efforts. scribe Ian C. Broadbeach Joker Naval History tidbit... The U.S. S. Constitution (Old Ironsides), as a combat vessel, carried 48,600 gallons of fresh water for her crew of 475 officers and men. This was sufficient to last six months of sustained operations at sea. She carried no evaporators (i.e. fresh water distillers). However, let it be noted that according to her ship's log, "On July 27, 1798, the U.S.S. Constitution sailed from Boston with a full complement of 475 officers and men, 48,600 gallons of fresh water, 7,400 cannon shot, 11,600 pounds of black powder and 79,400 gallons of rum." Her mission: "To destroy and harass English shipping." Making Jamaica on 6 October, she took on 826 pounds of flour and 68,300 gallons of rum. Then she headed for the Azores, 6

7 arriving there 12 November. She provisioned with 550 pounds of beef and 64,300 gallons of Portuguese wine. On 18 November, she set sail for England... In the ensuing days she defeated five British men-of-war and captured and scuttled 12 English merchant ships, salvaging only the rum aboard each. By 26 January, her powder and shot were exhausted. Nevertheless, although unarmed she made a night raid up the Firth of Clyde in Scotland. Her landing party captured a whisky distillery and transferred 40,000 gallons of single malt Scotch aboard by dawn. Then she headed home. The U. S. S. Constitution arrived in Boston on 20 February 1799, with no cannon shot, no food, no powder, no rum, no wine, no whisky, and 38,600 gallons of water. GO NAVY!!! SEX AFTER DEATH.. A couple made a deal that whoever died first would come back and inform the other if there is sex after death. Their biggest fear was that there was no after life at all. After a long life together, the husband was the first to die. True to his word, he made the first contact: " Marion... Marion " "Is that you, Bob?" "Yes, I've come back like we agreed." "That's wonderful! What's it like?" "Well, I get up in the morning, I have sex. I have breakfast and then it's off to the golf course.
