3 Page 3 Prez Sez We had our last Board meeting for this year and concentrated mainly on looking forward into the New Year and beyond. We reviewed draft budgets for the year ahead and these will be presented in final form for approval by the new Board and then on to the whole membership. Clearly one of the main issues we face is building our membership over the years ahead and ensuring that our committees meet regularly and keep all of us informed of progress against plan. Ian is developing some changes to our meeting format and in that regard he will brief us all of what he sees as his ideas. With Ray s departure as Bulletin editor we are also looking at how this will proceed under Kon s guidance and efforts. My sincere congratulations to Ray for a wonderful job as our editor over many years and for winning the best Bulletin award in the District. I also wish Kon the very best for taking on this important role. I am sure you would all like to wish Eirin the best wishes for her future before she departs for her home in Norway. She has been a great Youth Exchange Student under the guidance and support of the families who directly supported her during her stay, Rob and his family, Graeme and Jan, Ian and Di and Sally and John and the professional guidance of Gill Scrase. All members owe them our sincere thanks for their efforts. I trust that you all had an enjoyable long weekend and once again thank you for your support and encouragement. Smorgasbord lunch at Heyfield

4 Page 4 Hi from Portugal Hi Ray, I have left the shores of beautiful Australia for nearly 3 weeks now and am still amazed that even though it seems like yesterday, we have crammed so much into our daily agenda. We spent 3 days in the glitz and glam, the air conditioned comfort, the concrete and glass jungle of Dubai. An experience to behold and just to see what heaps of money can buy. However any human contact made was only between hotel staff and the tourists from all parts of the world. No, we were not to meet any locals to have a chat to about the price of fish. Then, only an 8 hour flight away, we arrived in Portugal. Well, what can I say. This country, with its wonderful people have opened our eyes to their amazing history, their culture and easy going lifestyle. Our trip was planned by a local Portuguese travel agent who has pre booked all accommodation. We have a car and a sat nav (thank goodness ) and we spend most days walking around little ancient villages perched high up on mountain tops. More often than not the village has a castle and actually lies within the castle walls. There is usually a very ornate and imposing church positioned in pretty much prime possy. Streets are incredibly narrow. I mean seriously narrow. Most of these villages were planned in 14th and 15th centuries and earlier. Even in the large towns, the houses are built right onto the street, which only permits in many instances one way traffic. It would be fine with a donkey and cart a few hundred years ago but to manoeuvre a car through at the breakneck speed some of the locals like to drive at, it can be a very hairy experience. We have come across Roman ruins dated from 200 AD. Many of these have fallen down of course but some village houses' walls have been built on the foundations of the ruins left on top of the ground. As I have said, driving along many of these little, narrow streets paved with local rocks, surrounded either by stone walls, street buildings, mountainous drops to the valley below, can really make you very aware you are not travelling in the long wide open plains of Australia. Now for the part that has made John and myself pretty much speechless each time we arrive at our "accommodation" for the night, is that we have been lucky enough to stay in the most amazing places. These have all been in the most fantastic locations such as over looking Atlantic Ocean, the Douro river, vineyards and are historically very significant. All are several hundred years old but totally refurbished and complemented with antique furniture and exquisite taste. Thank heavens the plumbing and bathrooms are immaculate and very 21st century. We stayed in a 14 th century fort on the ocean. A Palace thats gardens were designed in 1236 was where we wandered in amazement around the property and in awe of the collection of antiques. We are now in a convent built 500 years ago which houses its own church. The former monks dining rooms and quarters have been made into very comfortable lounge rooms, bar, pool room and extensions have resulted in outdoor swimming pool, gym and spa areas. The Portuguese people have been very warm and welcoming and proud to talk about their beautiful country. We have been trying hard to converse ( basically pleasantries ) with their language, but find the younger people can understand English. We arrive in Lisbon on the 19th June and will settle in ready for the Conference. We have already met several Rotarians travelling around Portugal. Everyone has been very impressed with what they have seen and experienced. It has been an amazing eye opener to us all. Well dear friends, I better be off now PS Thought some members may be interested on my trip thus far. I will send you a piece on the Conference when it happens. I have read your latest Bulletin and would like you to please give my sincere regards to Erin. I am sorry I will miss her "talk" to our Club. She has been a wonderful ambassador for her country and has done her family proud. She will go back home to them with a wealth of knowledge and host of valuable experiences that will help shape her into an even more proud and competent young lady. Regards to all. Stevie. Xx

6 Page 6 The Object of Rotary The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: 1. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service. 2. The application of the ideal of service by every Rotarian to his personal, business and community life. 4. The advancement of international understanding, good will, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service. Rotary Grace O Lord, the Giver of all good, we thank Thee for our food. May Rotary friends and Rotary ways help us serve Thee all our days.amen.
