Bulletin Volume 85 No 52 August Rotary Club of Sale Rotary District 9820 Incorporated Each month for the next year our Club will be publishing in the weekly bulletin a motto encouraging our members to be better people in all things we do. And each month is tagged with related theme: August: Gratitude To be thankful for opportunities received or for something that makes one happier. Last Meeting: Guest speaker: President s Night Teamwork David spoke on teamwork and the importance it plays in all aspects of life and how our Rotary cluster is part of a worldwide team working toward projects such as the eradication of Polio As a collective, we all came representing the sporting teams of our choice, The Tigers an obvious strength in numbers even with Rods absence: Laurie All Blacks Alan -Rowing Club Grant- RACERS (RAAF Auto Club of East Sale) David Show Jumping Noel Anti Football. Chair: David Strauss Sergeant: Mike Smith
Guests: Dinner Guests: Rotary Exchange student, Isis and her host family Dad, Jason and daughter Morgan Watson. Jason shared with the members that it is an absolute pleasure to have Isis with them. Isis shared (firstly in Portuguese and then in English!!) that the Jet Lag is over and she is feeling almost Australian, but still a little cold, and that last week end they visited Buchan Caves and Lakes Entrance and this weekend they will be catching up with friends, visiting Mansfield, Buffalo and then off to see the snow! A proud as punch president with our two young guests. Next Meeting: 25 August. Ibis. Coran Grewar. Disability Awareness in the Wellington Shire Chair: Liz Sheat. For all Ibis meetings, please be sure to contact Ibis before noon on Monday if you are an apology or wish to bring your partner or a guest frontdesk@allseasonssale.com.au
Announcements: President David: From 22 nd September, meetings will be at the RSL whilst Ibis is unable to cater for us. Rachel asked for final list of Go Youth volunteers- Rachel, Isis, Mike, Kim Two designs for new entry sign passed around for members vote. Daniel gave an update on the LASER Postie Bike Challenge While attending a conference, one of the sessions that hit home was the amount of tradies that suffer from depression and anxiety. Taking on healthy choices to reduce anxiety and depression was paramount in the decision to sponsor Beyond Blue. The Laser Porsche was in town with the postie bikes during the week. It was decided that the fine session be donated to Beyond Blue. Daniel accepted with thanks. Spouse: Gillian My early days growing up were at: Benalla, in the sunny north-east of the state. When I first came to Sale, my over-riding impressions were that is was cold and windy and I wondered how long I would be last here. My fondest memories of schooling were at Benalla East Primary School and two teachers in particular Mr Ginnivan in Grade 3 and Mrs Oaten in Grade 6. My lasting memory, from the early years I believe, is the third of a pint bottles of milk we had to drink. A truly revolting beverage after sitting for hours in the sun.
From my Form 6 time at Benalla Tech., the day I achieved legend status comes to mind. Walking back to class from the ovals having enjoyed a couple of Trent, we were passing the cricketers, who were also on their way back. Someone threw a ball to the guy with the bat. Whereupon, rather than catch it, he launched into a full blooded hook shot. I was five feet away, took the ball fair and square on the left eyebrow. Down I went. To everyone s amazement, including my own, I got back to my feet and continued on my way to class. The headaches should soon be gone. My first role in the workforce was as a storeman with Tulloch Jenkin in Sale. This was the industrial experience part of my studentship with the Education Department. The entrance to the Tulloch Jenkin premises was somewhere near the current road between the Centre and Bunnings. The entrance to the Centre at this spot would have been the gate into the goods shed at the time. Opposite Tullochs, in the rear of the Crown Hotel car park, was the old steam laundry, long since moved on. Tullochs also had the Pivot depot or the super shed as it was known. This was located near the corner of Reeve and Cunningham Streets, in what is now the Centre car park. Most interesting place(s) I have lived - Benalla and Sale, that s about it. Why I came to Sale/Gippsland : At the end of my year of teaching training in Hawthorn, I applied for every country tech school in the state, in order of preference, with Benalla at No. 1 and Sale at No. 2. Sale it was, along with Emu Jones I might add. My career role (in workforce/retirement): I am now the travel consultant for my extended family and friends, a role to which I look forward to devoting an ever increasing amount of time. Community involvement roles include (past and present): My only significant involvement in the past has been with the Rockley Tennis Club, starting in the days of their courts being at the Fauna Park. This club was started in large part by Gill s family, the McMillans. They had a couple of courts on Palmerston Street, operating as the Eastwind Club. Deciding to move to the Fauna Park after outgrowing the family courts, they were offered a ninety-nine year lease but being unsure of the outcome of the move, they opted instead for a twenty year lease. Had they taken the original lease, they might possibly still be on the Fauna Park site. My recreational interests include: The internet. We were made for each other.
From Adrian: Partner s Nights. The first one is on 20 October, the night of the DG s visit. This will be an important evening, not just because the DG will be there. The second night is the following week, 27 October, when we will be addressed by the Hon. Peter Ryan, Deputy Premier and Leader of the Nationals. Please reserve both those dates and invite your spouses to the meeting. Editor s note: With gratitude in mind, thanks to Mandy for the bulletin notes and Laurie for the pictures.
