Editor s Notes: The members of the Rotary Club of Wynnum and Manly were saddened to hear of the death of Sel Payne s mother last week. Our deepest sympathies are extended to Sel and his family at this difficult time.

3 Last Friday morning our long term member Arthur Hall died after a long illness. Our deepest sympathies are extended to Rosemary and her close family. Notice is given that Arthur s funeral will take place at the Wondall Road Uniting Church on Thursday 28th April at a.m. I have been asked by Rosemary to speak about Arthur as a Rotarian. I have been greatly helped by Ken Evans and Tony Fox. (The text of this reflection will appear in the Bulletin of 5th May. All Rotarians are asked to form a Guard of Honour outside the Church at the end of the ceremony. After the hearse has driven away all mourners are invited to move to Shangri-La for light refreshments. Some time later there be a private Cremation with Arthur s family and close friends at the Hemmant Crematorium.. David Tighe spoke of the need for helpers to help at the Breakfast after the Dawn Service on ANZAC Day. The Club is serving a sausage sizzle at the manly/lota RSL Hall at the conclusion of the service. This will be approximately some time before 5.00 a.m. If you are able to help please contact Dave. David also reminded us that we are conducting a Family Fun Day on Sunday 15th May to highlight the community problem with Domestic Violence. Steve Jones advised the Club that he again had for sale The Entertainment Book for $ He assures us that after just a few activities from the contents of the book, the initial cost will be recovered. Carol, our Exchange Student still has a few copies of the Exchange Students Taste of the World Recipe Book. They are just $5.00 each. Get your copy now. The Quota Club of Wynnum and Manly invites all members of the Rotary Club of Wynnum and Manly to their Annual Changeover Breakfast on Sunday 15th May a.m. for 8.30 a.m.at the Wynnum Leagues Club. R.S.V.P. by 10th May to Beryl ( ) or Yvonne ( ). Cost $ paid up front please. President Christine called forward Rotarians Andrew Hurst and Jo Soothill formally from the Mareeba Club and offered them membership within this Rotary Club. Christine presented them with their new Dinner Discs in the name of the Rotary Club of Wynnum and Manly. Christine then invited Merv Bird and Harold Parker forward and offered them each Life Membership of the Wynnum and Manly Rotary Club. In support of the nomination for Merv Bird Tony Fox stated. It is my pleasure and privilege tonight to speak about the contribution ourrecent member Mervyn Bird has made to the RC of Wynnum and Manly.

4 Merv was inducted into this Rotary club on 20th February 1980, 36 years ago. During this long time he found himself in almost every position you can undertake in a Rotary Club. Tony said about now Merv is probably thinking l don't remember doing all that stuff. Well he certainly did and a lot of other Rotary duties to numerous to mention here. Throughout all this time he was being actively helped and supported by Margaret who I might mention has been a stalwart for 25 years or more of the club s efforts with Meals on Wheels. In her own right Margaret has been recognized twice as a Paul Harris fellow. During all this Rotary activity Merv and Margaret were running a busy and successful Carpet Retailing business in the Manly business centre. Mervyn has made a major contribution to the success, growth and progress of this Rotary club and is well deserving of life membership of this club. We sincerely thank him for his efforts and wish him and Margaret good health and happiness for the future. Nev Harrison was the chief sponsor, so to speak, of Harold Parker who told us that Harold became a member in October Nev said that it didn t take long for Harold s potential to shine through. He became known as Mr raffle for his expertise in conducting these. Then Mr Melbourne Cup for the same sort of reasons. These were followed by the Santas, The State of Origin Nights, complete with Icecreams, Icecreams and finally the wonderful fund raiser which he organised and the Club began conducting their Wednesday BBQ at Bunnings under his oversight. Still going strong. Nev had no doubt at all that Harold should be recognised in this way. Both Merv and Harold were presented with their Plagues of Recognition of their Life Memberships. Christine presented Margaret with a beautiful floral arrangement. Dave Warren came forward and proposed Rod McEwan for membership. Dave told us that Rodney had lived n Australia for 16 years and had originally come from Rhodesia or today s Zimbabwe. He is the son of a Rotarian. Rodney came to live in Wynnum with Gaby his wife and their two sons Alec and Michael.

5 He and Gaby are owners of My Property Group - Real Estate Agents. They are coauthors of a book entitled Advance to Sold. Rodney manages the Property Management Division of the business and is extremely passionate about serving others. President Christine welcomed Rodney to the family of Rotary with the classification of Real Estate. Christine then presented Gaby with a bouquet of flowers. Graham Pearson came forward to formally introduce our Guest Speaker. Graeme Wescombe. Graeme was going to give a power point presentation of the ANZAC Centenary Memorial Project whose aims were to provide all the schools and colleges in our area with an ANZAC Memorial in the Centenary of ANZAC. As Graeme began his address he traced the history of this magnificent project which was really his baby, which a great many members of Rotary and the community were very wiling to help fulfil the aims of this huge project. As he spoke Graeme showed all the finished Memorials and told us little anecdotes about each of the 18 completed. How he got the sandstone and lifted them into place, the plaques and the stainless steel fittings and how Bunnings had provided thousands of dollars worth of plants and labour.

6 After Graeme had finished showing us through all the projects he invited the President of the Manly/Lota RSL to speak to us about the significance of ANZAC Day. He began by referring to a time 30 years ago when the children at school hardly knew anything about the significance of ANZAC or even what it stood for. Doug said that the landing at Gallipoli and subsequent engagements of the First World War truly put this nation on the map. He went on to say that today children at school are highly motivated and their knowledge is quite extensive. When he first heard of this Rotary initiative through Graeme Wescombe just two years ago he embraced the concept and now that all schools have a Memorial there is heightened interest and involvement in ANZAC Day services in the schools at the Memorials. Doug believes that the children of today are as patriotic as were the young men who went off to War early in the 20th Century. It is of no small consequence that this revival of interest and support for the ANZAC Commemoration is due to the erection of these Memorials. Well done Graeme and all those who helped you. Graeme concluded by thanking every one who had any involvement in this project and he was very emotional as he finished. The audience then rose and acknowledged Graeme s great work with a standing ovation which lasted some time. Then to top it all off President Christine awarded Graeme another sapphire to the one he already has on his Paul Harris Fellowship.
