Hamilton Honorary Member R.C.B.L Rookie in training Nathan Drew admitted that he was ill prepared for today s meeting. He did return a pair of rubber boots to Don Woods and a pair of dress shoes to Rob Wilkinson, remnants of the fishing weekend at Bonnie Doon.

2 Honorary Member Len Milner paid us his first visit since returning from Florida, but Nathan noted that he wasn t wearing a name badge. Len explained that he knew where it was, but couldn t immediately retrieve it. Actual truth is, the badge did not make the return trip home from Len s Florida residence. Lou got nailed amid rumours of today s top Toronto news story of police recovering a cement encased body in a steel drum. At the time of the meeting, news sources were reporting the body was rumoured to be the missing mafia family head from Montreal. (Later reports that day disclosed that the body was actually that of a member of a different ethnic crime family.) Happy dollars were donated by: Zamal, announcing the birth of their first child, a 7 lb 10 oz baby girl named Zoie. President Will contributed on the news that Debbie returned home from the hospital on Thursday and will be resuming her chemotherapy next Tuesday. Will thanked everyone for their support and says he knows Debbie is feeling well again because they have been able to resume fighting. Rex returned to the club after being away for a number weeks, noting he had missed paying for an anniversary and some family birthdays. Rex noted also that his daughter who has suffered from diabetes for many years has been provided with an insulin pump enabling her to more accurately dispense her insulin, thereby eliminating a number of health complicating ill effects she was suffering. A Chinese Auction was held for a golf umbrella, gift certificate and grocery bag that Deb donated. The happy winner was Dan Higgins.

3 By: Jim Bridle & Joseph Aghion April 22, The Lakeshore Club hosted and organized the Rotary District 709 Convention -- held in Niagara Falls at the Sheraton Foxhead and Sheraton Brock. Charter and Past President John Morris was inaugurated District Governor. Leon Hanslo is back in hospital this week for continuing surgical procedures on Wednesday to repair his eye area. Our thoughts and best wishes are with Leon and his family as he continues his road to recovery. President Will reminds that the Rotary Clubs of Burlington and Burlington North 39 th annual Lobster Fiesta takes place this Saturday evening, May 29, from 7 pm at Central Arena on Drury Lane. Tickets are $80 per person and can be obtained by calling Dr Ed will be dispensing at the bar and President Will assisting in the casino, bringing a touch of Lakeshore Rotary to the evening. Live dance music is provided by Freedom Train. Bill Pittman has the sign up sheets for the Awards Banquet, Tuesday evening June 8 th. The event features the presentation of scholarships to 10 outstanding students in various endeavours, as well as a number of Rotary awards to members and community leaders. Cost for the evening is $40. A roast prime rib of beef dinner with all the trimmings will be served and there will be a cash bar. This evening is a highlight of our Rotary year. Paul Kadlick, our club s Foundation Chair, advised that our year-to-date contribution to the Rotary Bill & Melinda Gates Polio Challenge stands at $5,466, ranking 3 rd in our district. Since the challenge commenced, our donations total $16,700, second place in (One of the Mississauga clubs tops the list, having benefited from an individual donation of $30,000.) Peter Knoepfli reminded that scholarship interviews take place Wednesday evening this week.

4 Deb Noonan advised there will be a Ribfest Committee meeting this Friday morning, May 28, 8 am, at Community Living Burlington. Exchange Students Exchange student Geoffroy was honoured for his 18 th birthday, which actually occurred last week. (Long story!) Rob presented Geoffroy with a gift and a birthday cake which had been retrieved from the freezer after a week in storage. Members sang an enthusiastic rendition of Happy Birthday. Rob related that neither the baker nor himself knew how to write Happy Birthday en français, but the baker did know the Serbian translation and endorsed that version on the cake. Geoffroy later told of going to the Blue Jay game this week with Lou, watching the home team s exciting 11-2 win. Geoffroy moved to the Thorpe residence this week. He accompanied his host family to Peterborough on Saturday, went to a lake with some friends on Sunday, caught a movie on Monday and later watched the fireworks with the Thorpes in the evening. Former exchange student Jammie Suwittum returned from her visit to Vancouver with the Dybka family and said goodbye to those at the club today as she is leaving to return home to Thailand. What the was missing in numbers at the Rotary After Five was surely made up in quality... Will gave us an update on Debbie s fantastic recovery, which is a relief to all... Colin Gray and Joseph Aghion got a historical lesson as Donna Dybka, Mike Dybka and Norm Crumpton, gave us an overview of growing up in Burlington and what the city was like those many decades ago and how it changed over the years. Rotary in general and our Club in particular was discussed at length so were the responsibilities and commitments of the various committees. With a suggestion that sometime soon a general membership discussion and the philosophy of each committee s would be opportune. Good fellowship was enjoyed by all as is usual at these informal gatherings. Next Rotary after 5 at Turtle Jacks is June 30.

5 Community Services co-chair Paul Kadlick introduced a number of motions for membership ratification that had been recommended by the CSC and subsequently passed by the Board. Moved by Paul, seconded by Peter Knoepfli: RCBL donated the sum of $20,000 to Hamilton Food Share to create the Hamilton/Burlington Rotary Capital fund and that the RCBL donated a further $20,000 to such fund in each of the following 4 fiscal years and that the Hamilton and Burlington Rotary Clubs be invited and encouraged to contribute annually to such fund and that the RCBL as lead club enter into an agreement with the Hamilton Food Share on the conditions of such donations to ensure that such funds are administered and applied in accordance with Rotary goals. Carried. Moved by Paul, seconed by Jospeh Aghion: To provide up to $5,000 prior to July 1 st to the Salvation Army to obtain permits for the new Salvation Army Supportive Housing Project located at 155 Panin Road and in addition RCBL to provide an additional $10,000 in the new fiscal year to support operations of the facility. Carried. Moved by Peter Knoepfli, seconded by Joseph Aghion: RCBL to accumulate up to $62,500 in order to create an endowed scholarship for graduate students at McMaster that is matched 5:1 by the university and government. Amount to be accumulated as funds are available as soon as but not limited to the next three years and provided to the McMaster Scholarship program for Burlington students if the 5:1 funding is available If the matching is not available, RCBL may choose to contribute the funds to the RCBL Foundation. Carried. Moved by Peter Ashenhurst, seconded by Zamal Whyte: RCBL to provide a loan of up to $50,000 to the Lion s Club to assist the financing of the parking lot renovations and additions at their Burlington facility. Such loan to be interest free. Carried.

6 New Member Inductions Rob Wilkinson conducted the Induction proceedings for two new members. Linda Barnett, sponsored by President Will, continues her service to Rotary, transferring from the Brampton club. New Rotarian Angus Shuttleworth, sponsored by Scott Barnard, follows in the footsteps of his grandfather and father as a Rotarian. Angus father Tony, a member of the Mississauga club, was on hand to witness the induction. Angus was born during his father s term as President and later had an early start with Rotary as a member of an Interact club. Both of the new members thanked the club for the opportunity to be a part of a busy and successful club. Program Due to the large number of items on the agenda at today s meeting, scheduled speaker Peter Ashenhurst was left with less than 5 minutes to conclude his earlier travelogue of Hungary.
