PRESIDENTS FINAL REPORT This has been a very challenging but very successful year for the Rotary Club of Broadbeach Inc. and for me as President but a year that has taken its toll in many ways. When you volunteer for the position of President and are immediately challenged by a vote for the Presidency, you wonder why the position is so popular. Having won this vote by a very large majority I began this adventure into the Presidency. Eventually you realise certain things: 1. You cannot please all of the Members all of the time. 2. Certain decisions and ideas/suggestions that you make or have are not supported by the Board, the Membership or Both Parties. 3. Your s and telephone calls increase by 1000s of percent and you delete most s as irrelevant or rubbish. You suddenly have Members phone you basically expressing their views or whim of the day sometimes in a vocal manner. 4. When someone cannot find where to direct an issue it ends up on your lap. 5. Lots of things happen or appear as if by magic such as the lecturn and associated things, the bell, bunyip boxes, raffle wine, honour boards banners etc. The meals numbers are all organised and the places are set. Sincere thanks to these magicians for making my year so easy 6. You learn to welcome everyone to the meeting over everyone s chatter or simply await a lull before opening the meeting and trying to speak. 7. There is simply no way short of execution to stop a guest speaker or Neil Jones going over the allotted time. Seriously the year has gone very fast and was not without some division in the Club particularly over Laos projects. However this issue was eventually resolved with a compromise and donation.

International/Vocational No doubt the highlight of the year was our visit to our Sister Club of Tauranga for its 70 th anniversary where we enjoyed the company of President Richard and Tauranga Members and President Mitsi and Members from Kasaoka. Jim and Pam, Denis and Clair, Tina, Jill, Carol Allen, Chris and I had a fantastic time and jointly donated 13 Tropical emergency boxes to Vanuatu as a Sister Club Project. We also had a Vocational Night at the Surfers Paradise Anglican Crisis Care (Drop Inn) Centre where we experienced the meals served to the Homeless. Then there was the extremely successful Police Officer of the Year and Young Achiever of the Year nights both in their 10 th year of operation. Feedback from all sources suggested these events were the most successful to date and I thank Ray and Kevin for their dedication to these projects. Membership We commenced the year with 42 Members plus 7 Hon. Members and finished the year with 37 Members plus 7 Hon. Members due to 5 resignations and one Termination of Membership. Of course the addition was our newest and youngest Member Renee Dillon. With very good intentions, we planned a Rotary Day/Membership Drive with other Clubs participating but the imminent cyclone caused the cancellation of this event. Service We conducted 94 sausage sizzles this year with an average net profit per sizzle of $456. Broken down, these sizzles were 47 Friday and 21 Thursday and 3 weekend Bunnings sizzles, 20 Corporate sizzles and 2 at the Renaissance Faire. We commenced the Car Boot sales at the Carrara markets with the result of a total net income of $9490 or $500 average for each Sunday worked. Apart from the actual sizzlers and car booters on Rostered Days, special thanks must go to Bob and Harold for organisation of rosters and Uwe, John Curr and Kevin for doing the sizzle setups and wash-ups. Special thanks also must go to Brian for the organisation of the successful sizzle and swing night at the Hub and a movie night for Polio Plus the proceeds of which were matched 2 for one by Bill Gates.

We also catered for the Gold Coast Suicide Prevention walk at Kurrawa. In summary, the increase of the Thursday Bunnings Sizzle and the new Carrara Markets Car Boot Sale have increased our fundraising and has also added to a significant service fundraising effort and commitment from most Members for which I offer my sincere thanks. The scooter project continues to be our main service project ably chaired by Cec and assisted by John Curr, Uwe and Faustina. The fleet is now updated so all scooters are under 10 years of age and we are currently running a fleet slightly in excess of 50 scooters with a long waiting list of recipients. Youth We assisted in the RYDA Program at All Saints Anglican College, provided funding to enable a team from Marymount College to attend the Queensland UN Speak competition. We displayed Rotary Promotional material at this conference and the result achieved a team selection to attend Sydney this year. We sponsored the Organiser, Janie-Marie Burgess to attend as host for the Queensland Team. This Lady has now been selected as the stand in National President of UN Speak and will be a future guest speaker at our Club. Our Club in December sponsored two young Ladies to attend RYTS in Tyalgum. Unfortunately our Club did not receive any applicants for RYLA but we had the opportunity to sponsor two young Ladies to attend RYPEN at Camp Bornhoffen. Rotary Foundation Our Club has been very active in this area and apart from donations to Polio Plus, We have achieved our goals of over $100 per Member contribution and some. Publicity Harold has done a wonderful job promoting our Club in the media as required and we thank him for his hard work in this area. Web site and Guest Speakers Jim had created the best Website in District 9640 and the caliber of the Guest Speakers Jim has procured throughout the year has been outstanding and they have been of the finest quality. Well done Jim.

Rotarlight The Rotarlight has had 3 Editors this year being Bill, Jim and I and while it was not an award winning publication, I felt that it kept the Membership fully informed. Sergeant Russel as usual did a fine job as the Sergeant raising much needed funding for the general account and was ably assisted by Corporals Kevin and occasionally Faustina. General Service above self Thanks also go to Neil Baldwin for standing in as Convenor and Treasurer when required, Hon. Member Ian as the scribe for most meetings, John Harding for his membership updates and creation of the lovely certificates often at his own expense and Chris for the creation, setting up and planning of the proposed book sale and to Noel for standing in on many occasions including Convenor and Roster Organiser. These people are the silent ones that deserve recognition as they are seldom seen at work but I know what they achieve. The Broadbeach Rotary Hub I must confess that I have done very little at the Hub this year as I have been busy fighting other fires as President. I did, however, manage to achieve extra external funding to site a new building comprising a conference room and 2 offices at the rear of the main building. This building, 3 containers and many other items of furniture, I managed to source free of charge from the old Gold Coast Hospital including 4 large split cycle air conditioners yet to be installed. I have recently received and accepted a quote to connect power to this building and hopefully I will organise the completion of the Hub in the next couple of months. This facility has been invaluable for the sausage sizzle equipment, the scooter program, fundraising, meetings and fellowship and now the proposed book sale. The facility is the envy of most Clubs and it is a shame that it is not used to its full potential. Meeting Venue This has been a bone of contention this year with declining membership, attendance and the minimum payment of 25 meals demanded by the Hotel. The New Board will have to deal with this issue immediately.

In summary, we had a very successful year donating over $50,000 to charity and raising in excess of $60,000 broken up as follows: Club Projects/Donations 2014/2015 Scooter Project New Scooter Purchases $ 5,600 Operational costs 4,424 Donation Xmas cakes 792 $10,816 The Rotary Foundation Club (donation) $ 2,140 Public Donations (Kokoda) 980 Members 3,109 Members direct 1,200 $ 7,429 TRF PolioPlus Sizzle & Swing 2,665 Club (donation) 1,000 Christmas Cakes 416 Public Donations (Kokoda) 230 Members 1,081 $ 5,392 Other Rotary Related Suns Horizons Program $ 3,000 RYTS 1,100 RYPEN 550 ROMAC 550 Operation Cleft 500 Circus Quirkus (Broadwater Southport) 275 District 9640 projects $ 820 $ 6,795 Cyclone Marcia Rotary Relief Fund Member donations $ Club donation $ 681 $ 1,000 Cyclone Pam Vanuatu Rotary Emergency Relief Kits $ 2,672 Laos Project Gravity Feed Water System Suang Luang $ 5,091 Sailability Gold Coast (contribution towards new outboard motor) $ 2,300 Broadbeach Surf Life Saving Club $ 2,000 Broadbeach PCYC Youth Program $ 1,000 Surfers Paradise Anglican Crisis Centre Club donations $ 2,200 - Member donations 275 $ 2,475 Sponsorship United Nations Youth Australia (Queensland) $ 1,260 Mac Millar Football Foundation $ 500 Love Bite Domestic Violence Program $ 600

New Life Care $ 700 Total Charitable contribution $50,030 It is with great delight that I hand over the reins to President Elect Bill, as I have not enjoyed this year at all. This year I will reassess and decide my future in Rotary. I thank my Board, Committee Chairs and the whole Membership and Partners for their contribution toward this very successful year. 15 Questions that haunt me: How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered? Once you're in heaven, do you get stuck wearing the clothes you were buried in for eternity? Why does a round pizza come in a square box? What disease did cured ham actually have? How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage? Why is it that people say they 'slept like a baby' when babies wake up like every two hours? Why are you IN a movie, but you're ON TV? Why do doctors leave the room while you change? They're going to see you naked anyway... Why is 'bra' singular and 'panties' plural? If Jimmy cracks corn and no one cares, why is there a stupid song about him? "According to a new study, American fathers are spending more than twice the amount of time with their children than they used to. Experts say it's due to a sweeping new trend called 'unemployment On vacation, a man and his wife check into a hotel. The husband wants to have a snack at the restaurant, but his wife is extremely tired so she decides to go on up to their room to rest. She lies down on the bed... just then a train passes by very close to the window and shakes the room so hard she's thrown out of the bed. Thinking this must be a freak occurrence, she lies down once more. But just a few minutes later a train again shakes the room so violently, she's pitched to the floor. Exasperated, she calls the front desk and asks for the manager who says he'll be right up. The manager is sceptical but the wife insists the story is true. "Look... lie here on the bed -- you'll be thrown right to the floor!" So he lies down next to the wife. Just then the husband walks in. He takes one look at the manager lying in bed with his wife and yells, "Hey! What are you doing in here!?" The manager calmly replies, "Would you believe I'm waiting for a train?"

I rear-ended a car this morning...the start of a REALLY bad day! The driver got out of the other car, and he was a DWARF! He looked up at me and said, 'I am NOT Happy!' So I said, 'Well, which one ARE you then?' Murphy, a furniture dealer from Dublin, decided to expand the line of furniture in his store, so he decided to go to Paris to see what he could find. After arriving in Paris, he visited with some manufacturers and selected a line that he thought would sell well back home. To celebrate the new acquisition, he decided to visit a small bistro and have a glass of wine. As he sat enjoying his wine, he noticed that the small place was quite crowded, and that the other chair at his table was the only vacant seat in the house. Before long, a very beautiful young Parisian girl came to his table, asked him something in French (which Murphy could not understand), so he motioned to the vacant chair and invited her to sit down. He tried to speak to her in English, but she did not speak his language. After a couple of minutes of trying to communicate with her, he took a napkin and drew a picture of a wine glass and showed it to her. She nodded, so he ordered a glass of wine for her. After sitting together at the table for a while, he took another napkin, and drew a picture of a plate with food on it, and she nodded. They left the bistro and found a quiet cafe that featured a small group playing romantic music. They ordered dinner, after which he took another napkin and drew a picture of a couple dancing. She nodded, and they got up to dance. They danced until the cafe closed and the band was packing up. Back at their table, the young lady took a napkin and drew a picture of a four-poster bed. To this day, Murphy has no idea how she figured out he was in the furniture business! A man being mugged by two thugs put up a tremendous fight! Finally, the thugs subdued him and took his wallet. Upon finding only two dollars in the wallet, the surprised thug said, "Why did you put up such a fight?" To which the man promptly replied, "I was afraid that you would find the $200 hidden in my shoe!" My wife cannot ride in a car without telling whoever is driving what to do, when to do it, etc. She is,

bar none, the worst back seat driver in the world. I have long thought this, though she would deny it. She claimed she seldom, if ever made comments about my driving. I, of course, claimed the opposite. Now I have proof. The other day we were headed for the mall and my daughter piped up, "Daddy, before you married Mommy, who told you how to drive?" One day I accidentally overturned my golf buggy. Elizabeth, a very attractive and keen golfer, who lived in a villa on the golf course, heard the noise and called out, Are you okay, what's your name?" "Its Jack, and I'm Okay thanks," I replied. "Jack, forget your troubles. Come to my villa, rest a while, and I'll help you get the cart up later." "That's mighty nice of you," I answered, but I don't think my wife would like it." "Oh, come on," Elizabeth insisted. She was very pretty, very sexy and persuasive... I was weak. "Well okay," I finally agreed, and added, "but my wife won't like it." After a restorative brandy, and some creative putting lessons, I thanked my host. "I feel a lot better now, but I know my wife is going to be really upset." "Don't be silly! Elizabeth said with a smile, She won't know anything. By the way, where is she?" "Under the cart!" And so the old year ends and a new year begins Best wishes to our new President Bill and his team
