What will I commit to? What changes can or can t I live with? What do I hear God saying to us? 12 F i r s t u c c h a p p e n i n g s F i r s t u n i t e d c h u r c h o f C h r i s t, H a m p t o n, VA Together... Ecclesiastes 4:9-10a 9 Two are better off than one, because together they can work more effectively. 10 If one of them falls down, the other can help him up. I can t believe that we have been married one month! We both want to express our thanks to our church family for all the love and support you have shown to us as we got married. Thank you to all of you who came to celebrate with us at First UCC. Thank all of you for the gifts, thoughts and prayers. We really love and appreciate all of you. This scripture is one of the scriptures my new husband and I had read at our wedding. We have both been living alone most of our lives and yet now will be making changes to live together. We know that together we can work more effectively and that we will be there to help each other. As we seek God s will for our future, Rich and I are looking forward to sharing our lives together. We are not sure about details of our future but we are trusting God to lead us. And we know that whatever the future brings we will do fine because we have God and each other. Even in the difficulties, we will work through them to find the best possible solutions, and we will work together to figure things out. Together: Worshipping God, Growing Spiritually, Serving Others is the statement we have used since 2012 to guide our mission, vision and life together here at First UCC. If we were to pick a scripture to go with it I think the scripture from Ecclesiastes would express it best. Ecclesiastes is one of the books in the Bible classified as wisdom writings. Jesus in his prayer to the disciples prayed that they may all be one as God, Jesus and the Spirit are one. I think we are trying to live out that statement here at First UCC. In order to worship, grow spiritually and serve others we must work together. We don t all have to hold the same beliefs. We only have to proclaim common belief in Jesus Christ and be willing to accept each other as they believe. It is not always easy because we all have thoughts about how things need to be and to be done. We all have things we are comfortable with and things that make us feel discomfort. To be an effective church sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ with others we need to continue to work together and help each other. We can move forward, make decisions and be a light for our community if we trust God, work together and help each other out. Pastor Lisa JUNE/JULY 2017 TOGETHER Worshiping God Growing Spiritually Serving Others 1

2 Music Director s Notes Good Time Singers Schedule The Good Time Singers will not rehearse again for the season, but we have one more program to present at 10 am on Mon., June 5 at Coliseum Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. After we present our program, we will go out to lunch together to celebrate another season of great outreach programs. During the summer, I will be developing our next season's program of music, and I encourage everyone to come out to be part of the Summer Choir! (see next article). Summer Choir Begins Sunday, June 4 On Sunday, June 4, at 10 am, we will begin the Summer Choir. This group is made up of anyone who would like to sing an easy anthem for that particular morning's 10:30 am service. We will rehearse each Sunday in the Choir Room at 10 am, except for the last Sunday of June, July and August, when the Men's Chorus will sing the anthem. This is the perfect time to give singing a try! No experience needed! Men's Chorus Schedule The Men's Chorus will continue rehearsals after church most Sundays at 11:30 am. They will sing in church on June 25, July 30, and August 27. Youth Sunday, June 11 On Sunday, June 11, we will celebrate Youth Sunday with the church youth leading the service. As the sermon we will be presenting the play, Amazin' Creation, an amusing take on the aftermath of the Creation Story. There are 7 important roles, so we need everyone involved. We will be rehearsing it on Sundays May 21, 28, and June 4, at 9:30am in the Youth Room. Youth, please join us in preparing for this special service. Adults, please plan to be present in worship to support our young people. They are the future of our church! 4 STEWARDSHIP MESSAGE: Stewardship is one of those words that I just assume I know the meaning of, without thinking much about it. So I began to actually think about the word, and when I did, a picture formed in my mind that of a stewardess on an airplane. And what does a stewardess do? She hands out food and drinks to the passengers, makes sure they are comfortable, and if she is a good, stewardess is patient and hospitable. Therefore, we are the stewards and the stewardesses on this planetary space craft called Earth, charged to see to one another s needs as we are able, with the resources we re been given, doing so with a gentle and humble spirit. Meanwhile, we trust that our pilot, God, will see us safely to our destination, with all those on board cared for and made to feel welcome. After all, that is our mission from God: to love one another and help provide for others needs, whether they be material, emotional, or spiritual. - Courtney Phillips Apr 23 $ Apr 30 $2, May 7 $2, May 14 $2, May 21 $ Thank you to all who have practiced stewardship through the gifts of your time, talent and tithes.
