1 Gettysburg Presbyterian Church G R A P E V I N E June 13, 2012 Inside: Last Call for VBS July Dates to Remember Volunteers Needed for Arc Fun for Friends Night Camp Krislund Fundraiser Day at Mr. G s MidSHIP s Hershey Park Day I was reading an article in Christian Century the other day called Christianity by the numbers. It notes that Christianity has experienced significant geographical shifts in the last 100 years. One hundred years ago twothirds of the world s Christians lived in Europe. Now only one-quarter of the world s Christians live there! Today 37% live in North and South America, 24% live in sub-saharan Africa, and 13% in the Asia-Pacific region. Christianity has grown exponentially in sub-saharan Africa, from just 9% of the population in 1910 to 63% today! Nigeria now has more Christians than Germany, where the Protestant Reformation began. When Mark Englund-Krieger preached on May 27 (Pentecost), he reminded us that God s Spirit is at work in countries all around the world. As part of the Body of Christ, we have responsibilities to our brothers and sisters in these other places. So we give financial support to missionaries and projects in other places. In many cases our dollars are able to accomplish far more there than they could here. Don t forget to pray for our missionaries abroad! They need our spiritual support, too! Honduras- Mark and Ashley Wright Kenya- Ben and Emilly Okello Japan- Bill and Ann Moore Kenya - Marta Bennett You can learn more about the Wrights, Moores and Marta Bennett at Summer Worship Schedule Begins July 1 9:00 a.m. Contemporary Worship 10:30 a.m. Traditional Worship Use the change of schedule to meet some more of our GPC family! The summer schedule will continue through July and August!

Read the following Thank-You from the Food Pantry.. Dear Friends: Thank you very much for your generous donation of $ to assist in the operation of the Operation Pride Program, which serves low-income people in Adams county. Since January 1, 2012, the Emergency Services Food Pantry Program supplied nutritional foods and energy assistance to 1,470 families or 3,855 individuals. Without your help many families in Adams County would not be able to meet their family s basic need for food your help is critically important! This year SCCAP served more than 29,000 unduplicated individuals with programs like the one mentioned above. Your donation is an investment in the life of someone living in our community. Sincerely, Megan Shreve Executive Director From July 1 to August 31 Penny Messinger, GPC s Administrative Assistant, is on summer hours which are: Mon. - Thurs. 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. & off on Fridays. NEED A RIDE? If you are having trouble attending church services and/or church functions due to not having transportation, let the Deacons help you. We are only a phone call away. Smooth 2 rocks White spray paint Helium tank Cans of white icing Cupcakes with no icing White card stock Colored cardstock (Neon colors) Homemade or bought Playdoh Streamers - all colors Noisemakers Party hats Children s Church in July & August As most of you know, there will be 2 worship services each Sunday in July & August Contemporary at 9:00 and Traditional at 10:30 a.m. There will be nursery and a Children s Program offered at both services. Children will come to worship with their parents and then exit at a designated time early in the service. Children can be picked up in the downstairs classroom following the service. Ice Cream Social at the Round Barn was great! Inside the beautiful historic Round Barn, more than 110 ice cream fans ignored the rain outside and indulged in delicious bowls of Mr. G s vanilla topped with local strawberries. Thanks go to Carrie Trax, Dave and Pat Conklin and Bruce Rowland for leading us in some favorite hymns and songs, both old and new. When the skies cleared, the kiddie train was a big hit, pulling out of the barn to much enthusiastic waving from families, and a hayride delighted all ages. We also enjoyed a slide show retrospective of the past church program year which highlighted, through pictures, the many ways GPC people serve, study, and worship God as well as have fun! We are especially grateful to Cindi and Milt Knouse for providing the special location for this fellowship event. If you weren t able to be there, we missed you and hope you ll join us in 2013!

The shelter got a new home in April 2010, the old Columbia Gas building here in town. The shelter is home to 20 adults and 20 children, with a maximum capacity of 45 people. Residents may stay at the shelter for a maximum of six months. While working closely with SCCAP, persons living at the shelter are assigned a case worker. The shelter offers GED classes, help with job placement and lessons in financial stability. Their goal is to help those in need and get them back on their feet as soon as possible. We all know that God doesn t give us anything we can t handle but please keep the individuals and families at the shelter in your prayers as they are going through a transition in their lives.

6 Page 6 Calendar of Giving The Calendar of Giving is an opportunity for our congregation to support numerous local organizations. Through this program, we identify local organizations that are in need of smaller donations. Each month, we will be collecting specific items for the identified organization. For the month of: July School Supplies backpacks, pencils, pens, scissors, crayons, notebooks, notebook paper, glue sticks, colored pencils. The Meals & More Summer Program makes a huge difference in the lives of children who are abused, neglected, homeless, and hungry here in our community. This program offers a safe environment which provides good nutrition, education, self-esteem building, spiritual development, and athletics. Their activities include computer instruction, reading, career exploration, arts and crafts, films, sign language, Spanish, and healthy competitions. There is a major emphasis on teaching respect for others, proper manners, drug and alcohol education, and conflict resolution. Meals and More operates for nine weeks in the summer months, Monday through Friday, from 10am - 2pm. BLUE brochures containing detailed information on the Calendar of Giving program, the selected organizations, and the specific donation requests are available in Fellowship Hall. We will leave at 9:30 a.m. Please bring: A ticket to Hershey Park (or money to buy one), sunscreen, $ for lunch and dinner, swimsuit for water rides (and towel if you want), cell phone (if you have one). We will return around 9:00 p.m. You are welcome to bring friends too, but they must bring a note from their parents (with phone numbers) with them. RSVP to Libby (cell or fourcrowes@embarqmail.com) by July 6 so that we will be sure to have enough space in cars. Historic Church Walking Tours Our Wednesday evening tours will begin on June 13th with tours starting at 6:00 and again at 6:30 in front of our church. This first tour will be the West Tour, going West of Baltimore St. This tour is also part of the Fringe Arts Festival so we hope to have large numbers of visitors. Consider our tours to entertain your family and friends and please help to spread the word and our rack cards, found in Fellowship Hall, to any place you think folks will see them. We need more guides for these evenings, Wed. June 13th through August 29th. Please contact Joan Pore if you would like to do this. Visitors are very happy and friendly on these tours. They love the guides and like to get to know them. All those age 16 and up are welcome to help us in this mission. Thanks to the congregation for your support. Joan Pore The Burden Bear Workshop will take a summer break. Our last session was June 11th. We'll start again on Monday, Sept.10th, 8:30-11:30 a.m. We thank the congregation for their support. We have a good supply of huggable bear bundles to supply our various outlets through the summer. Please keep us in mind if you have or know of anyone else who might have extra fabrics, narrow ribbon or stuffing materials to contribute to our supplies. These supplies may be left on the kitchen pass-through counter at any time, marked with the name of the contributor and for Burden Bears. Special words of gratitude to the loyal workshop members who have been working very diligently these past months. For various inescapable reasons, our numbers of workers has dwindled.
