Brodhead United Methodist Church st Center Ave., Brodhead, WI brodheadumc@gmail.com Church Office Hours Monday-Friday 9am-12pm, 1pm-3pm To contact Pastor Krystal: May 2016 May is our Attitude of Gratitude Month! Joyce Meyers writes, Most people would agree that we have a lot to be thankful for. After all, many of us live a lifestyle full of conveniences. We live in comfortable homes, wear nice clothes, and have reliable transportation. We have no shortage of clean water or healthy food. We have access to quality healthcare and education, and basically live a good life with a lot of freedom, safety and security. While it s easy to take these wonderful blessings for granted and sometimes get into the bad habit of focusing on what we don t have millions of people around the world live without the basic necessities of life. Think about it: Those without a place to live would love to have a house to clean, yet a homeowner is more likely to complain about cleaning their home. A person without any transportation dreams of having a car to drive, while someone who owns a car is more likely to complain about the cost of regular maintenance and unexpected repairs. It is so easy to forget how blessed we are! Maintaining an attitude of gratitude is something we need to do on purpose. Choosing an attitude of thanksgiving not only honors God it s good for us! I like to think of praise as a prayer that naturally flows out of us. It s a thankful heart attitude that says, I love You, Lord. I worship you. I can t do this without you. I need your help today. Each moment that we re given is a precious gift from God. We can choose to have a thankful attitude and live each moment full of joy simply because God is good. May we will celebrate and Attitude of Gratitude. We will celebrate Sunday School and teachers, Mothers, Pentecost, our service men and women and freedom, Graduation, and Fathers. Join with us this month as we rejoice about all that we have instead of wallowing in what we may lack. So have an Attitude of Gratitude this month and beyond! God Bless, Pastor Krystal Goodger
The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is: To know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ. To develop a creative supportive fellowship. To expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. UMW Mustard Seed- Save the Date! Saturday, May 14th, we will continue our study of Slightly Bad Girls of the Bible by getting to know Sarah more intimately and see who gets the last laugh. We will begin at 9am for fellowship, study, and prayer. Come and join us! Please contact Sue Wolter at with any questions. The Purpose of United Methodist Women The United Methodist Women are a faithful group of women that meet to learn more about missions around the world. Some of the women attended a Spiritual Growth Retreat, in April, at Midland UMC, near Mazomanie and shared what they learned with the local unit. Our district has changed from the Capital District to the Southwest District. It is a larger area that extends to the Mississippi River. This will mean longer travel to some of the district meetings, but worth the effort. Our next meeting will be held May 26th, the 4th Thursday, at 1:00 p.m. Betty Earleywine will present the program "Deeper Into Mission". Winona and Pat will provide the dessert after the meeting. Come join us for an interesting afternoon. Lydia Circle The Lydia Circle will meet May 3rd and go over Lesson 15 with Janice. Our hostess is Winona, and we will meet at her home. Read It and Reap... Our May UMW Read What was going on in Harper Lee s home county when the Equal Justice Initiative was born? Was there discrimination in our criminal justice system toward the poor, the wrongly condemned, women and children? Then?... Now? Join us as the Read It and Reap UMW discussion group gather at Linda Gissing s home in Monroe as we reflect on this true story about the potential for mercy to redeem us and the call to fix our broken system of justice. We will carpool over to Monroe together, about 6:30 pm... please call or Mary Friederich for a ride. Our July 13th read will be The Underground Girls of Kabul by Jenny Nordberg, hosted by Janice Davenport. Sewing Circle The Sewing Circle (Quilting Circle) meets every 2nd Tuesday of the month. We put together and tie lap robes for the people in local nursing homes and Care Net. You don't need to know how to sew to come and help us. So, put May 10th at 9:00 a.m. on your calendar for helping a good cause.
RADON Radon is important as it is the number two cause of lung cancer surpassed only by smoking. There are 15, 000 to 22, 000 deaths in the United States each year from this poison. It is a colorless, odorless gas that is emitted from the soil, giving off tiny radioactive particles which are inhaled and subsequently damage the lungs. It was initially identified in uranium miners since they had a higher-than-normal rate of lung cancer. Southern Wisconsin falls in a high risk zone for radon. This poisonous gas can be found in new and old buildings as it seeps into the basements and crawl spaces. It can be found in houses where the one next door is radon free. It is estimated that dangerous levels of radon exist in one out of every fifteen homes in this area. The US Surgeon General and Environmental Protection Agency recommends that all homes be tested to assure safety. Even granite countertops may give off a small amount of radon. However, research is showing that this amount of radioactivity is negligible and poses no risk. Exposure doesn t cause symptoms initially but does damage over time. Symptoms of radon poisoning are hoarseness, persistent cough, chest pain, coughing up blood, wheezing and reoccurring respiratory infection, such as pneumonia or bronchitis. Obviously, these symptoms are consistent with lung cancer. Home test kits are available at most hardware stores. So, what can you expect if your test comes back indicating a high level of radon gas in your home? There are several methods to mitigate the radon from your home. Soil suctioning is a process of drawing the radon from beneath a house and venting it away. Sealing cracks and openings can help limit the flow of radon into the home. A secondary benefit of sealing is the reduction in heating and cooling costs. House pressurization creates a differential pressure to decrease inflow of the radon into the home. There is also heat recovery ventilation but this will drive up the cost of heating and cooling. To determine the best course of action it is highly recommended to engage a mitigation contractor. They will customize an appropriate radon mitigation system for your home. The cost for a home radon mitigation system usually varies from $1,000 to $3,000. When buying a home know the numbers..of radon in the home. It is encouraged that you have a radon contingency in your purchase agreement, so should this poison be found in the home, you have some possibility to recover the cost of mitigation. Don t run the risk of endangering you or your family, do the radon test, because this is not a case of ignorance being blissful. Vicki Evenson, Parish Nurse
Picture Day! It s time! We are updating the Church Directory! We are pleased to announce Lifetouch will be here the weekend of May 6th & 7th to take family pictures. We are scheduling sessions for Friday, May 6th from 12-7pm and Saturday, May 7 from 9-4pm. Everyone is encouraged to schedule their appointment to have their picture taken. You will get a free 8X10 and church directory! End of Life Planning May 24 th at 6:30 p.m. In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes." - Benjamin Franklin While it is not something most people like to think or talk about, preplanning can be a benefit to you and your loved ones. By planning some or all of the features of end of life including legal and financial, funeral, and burial, or even by simply talking with your family about your wishes, you can help take some of the pressure off of those who would otherwise have to make decisions during a difficult emotional time and you can provide them with the information they need in order to honor and remember you in the ways you want. In this End of Life Planning event we will have a few different speakers to hit on some of the aspects of end of life. Daniel L. Newcomer from the Newcomer Funeral Home, Rev. Krystal Goodger from Brodhead United Methodist Church, attorney Scott Thomson from the law offices of Kittelsen, Barry, Wellington, Thompson and Schluesche, and possibly a Hospice representative. This night will be beneficial to anyone who would like more information about getting your affairs in order. Do you have final plans made? Do your children, spouse, and loved ones know your wishes? Do you know what your parents would like? Do you know where their will is located? Two Choices: (A) Get your affairs in order today (B) Leave all the decisions to your loved ones down the road! *Note: waiting until you have some free time = option B We will see you May 24 th in Fellowship Hall at 6:30 p.m. for End of Life Planning! Parking Lot Update We have a good start on fundraising for paving the parking lot- around $15,000 of the $51,000 needed! We have had survey work done, trees removed, designs created, and paperwork started. Well on our way to meeting our mid-summer goal! The next Noisy Can Offering will be May 8th for Camp Grants! Thank you for your generosity, time, and prayers as this necessary improvement continues to move forward! Do you have a picture of a church activity or group? Please them to brodheadumc@gmail.com to have them posted on Facebook, website or the newsletter! Thank you!
News From Wisconsin United Methodist Foundation Do you have appreciated stock? It can be gifted in whole or in part to a charity of your choice. For information on how you can make a gift of appreciated stock to your favorite church or United Methodist ministry, please find the most current securities processing form on our website at Be sure to call us or send us a copy of the form so that we can process your gift as quickly as possible. Need more information? Please call us toll-free at or us at wumf@wumf.org. 70 ½ or over? If you are or older and have a Traditional or Roth IRA you may give directly to a charitable organization without being subject to income tax on the distribution. In addition, the gift satisfies all or part the annual Required Minimum Distribution from the IRA. This feature would potentially save income tax by reducing reported income. We encourage you to consider an IRA Charitable Rollover gift to your local church or any United Methodist ministry of your choosing. You may make a direct charitable gift to fund your church s operating budget, fund a special project or establish a permanent endowment fund to benefit your church in perpetuity. If you prefer to channel your IRA Charitable Rollover gift through the Foundation office to your local church or a number of United Methodist ministries, we are happy to do so. The Wisconsin United Methodist Foundation is available to assist. Please call us toll-free at or us at wumf@wumf.org. The one who blesses others is abundantly blessed; Those who help others are helped. Proverbs 11:26-27 You are invited to attend a concert! Many of you have gone to the Fireside for their wonderful dinner and play. Did you know that they also have a Christian Concert with a chicken and fish buffet? The price is much less than the other plays, and the food and music are excellent. The UMW are planning a trip there, and would like you to join us. On Tuesday, August 9th, we will leave the church parking lot at 10:00 a.m., to arrive in time for seating and lunch. The cost is $35.95, and if we get 18 people to go, we will not have to pay tax. They suggest a $3.00 tip to the waitress, which is not included. I would like to know if you are interested, by the end of June, and have final payment by July 14th. Please contact Janice Davenport at church, or by phone , if you think you may attend, as I need to know how many to plan for. Put it on your calendar as a possibility, and save the date. There are brochures on the book shelf at the back of the church. What if you are the answer to someone s prayer? God promises to be faithful forever, and provide what we need. I know from my own life that this is true. I also know God works through his willing servants to answer the prayers of those in need. Are you able and willing to give of your time- spend an evening or overnight- talents- prepare a meal, or help setup, take down; or treasure- prayers for the volunteers and all those who are homeless, hungry, alone Thank you for all you give that makes the lives of others a little better. Family Promise Host Week is May Sign-up at the back of the church. God Bless, Julie Hodgson Family Promise Coordinator
