All are welcome to join us as we ready our church for the Christmas season. We will then be removing the decorations on Tuesday, January 6th. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Once again we are ordering poinsettia plants to decorate the altar for Christmas. The order forms are located on the table in the narthex. This must be placed in the offering plate or mailed to the church office by Sunday, December 14th. White Gift Sunday December 7th has been designated as White Gift Sunday. During these hard economic times, there are more and more families who are struggling. Please bring your nonperishable items to worship that day. 2 The Purpose of United Methodist Women The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is: To know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ. To develop a creative supportive fellowship. To expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. Vicki Evenson Receives UM Mission Pin for 2014 On Sunday, November 16 th, Vicki Evenson was presented with the 2014 United Methodist Women s Mission Pin for so generously sharing her gifts and talents with almost everyone here at church. Vicki s care of others began many years ago when she worked for the Greater Beloit Nursing Service, holding credentials as a nursing supervisor. She continued her work for the Green County Health Department as director and health officer, followed, in her retirement, by joining the teaching staff at the Edgewood College School of Nursing, serving on the Green County Health Board, and our own Parish Nurse. Thank you, Vicki! Pleasant View Reminder For all who have purchased Christmas gifts for Pleasant View residents, please return your wrapped gift with the identifying label taped to the gift to the counter in the small Sunday School room across from the Sanctuary by Sunday, November 30 th, so they may be delivered by Edith Kitchen. Thank you to all who volunteered to shop and to Edith for her faithfulness and care! Cookie and Candy Sale for Missions Our final 2014 bake sale for missions will take place on Saturday, December 13 th, at the Bank of Brodhead. Please deliver your gifts to the church kitchen by 9 am Friday morning when they will be packaged for sale. On Saturday, the sale will be open from 8 am to 12 noon.

One can head directly there, or carpool with others, meeting at the church at 11 am. Please call Mary ( ) or Janice ( ) by Monday, December 15 th, to make your reservation and why not bring a friend along with you. Merry Christmas to all! To Live by the Spirit How are we to understand and relate to God the Spirit? The Spirit empowers us to fight life s inevitable battles with the world, the flesh, and the devil. In every way and at every turn we are utterly dependent on the Holy Spirit of God. Week Two will be the focus of our discussion for the Mustard Seed sisters on Saturday, December 13 th. We will meet in room 23 with Jo Ann as our discussion leader (pages 31-51). Additional Beth Moore study books are still available we would love to have you join us! Lydia Circle The Lydia Circle will enjoy lunch out on December 3rd at 11:30 a.m. at Kay's Outback, in Orfordville. Reserve this date, as we will enjoy a good meal, have a brief meeting, and have some fun. Bring a friend with you for enjoyment. Meet at the church at 11:15 for a ride. Sewing Circle The Sewing Circle will meet Tuesday December 9th at 9:00 a.m. We will be selecting quilts that we have made to deliver to the area nursing homes, and the Care Center in Monroe.. We also have a large comforter to tie, so if you have some extra time, come join us in tying this comforter. Many hands make light work, and there may be cookies to share. Read It and Reap Read It and Reap, the Brodhead UMW reading program circle, will resume with great enthusiasm on Wednesday, January 21 st. We will discuss Pat Summitt s book entitled, Sum It Up. This is an autobiography of a country girl from Henrietta, Tennessee, who grew up driving fast and playing hard, learning basketball playing against three brothers on a homemade backboard. She went on to win an Olympic medal and at 22 became head coach of the University of Tennessee Lady Vols. Her story is full of humanity, wit and fierceness, by a giant among coaches who has transcended Ameri- can sports. There are 25 copies in our library system, and five on CD. Join us for some interesting discussion and dessert at the Friederich s, 601 Tenth Street, beginning at 7 pm.

4 Eating Healthy While Eating Out It is becoming known that we spend more money and waste more calories by dining out than ever before. The US Department of Agriculture estimates that we eat 29% or our meals away from home and the National Restaurant Association has identified that these meals take up to 44% of our food budgets. These facts, along with the alarming rise in obesity and diabetes rates, support the need to eat healthy EVEN while eating out. Here are some tips you may try to support your effort: Before leaving the house: Know your restaurant and its selections, to assure that you will have healthy choices. Restaurant menus are often found on the web so you can even decide on your meal before you arrive. Don't leave the house starved. Arriving at the restaurant and ordering: Order water, tomato juice or unsweetened iced tea and start sipping. Order as soon as you can. Have rolls, crackers, and butter etc. removed from the table. Order your meal before others in your group to avoid hearing their tempting choices. Add extra veggies and eliminate potato or pasta from your entree. Order whole grain breads instead of white bread for sandwiches. Ask to have sauces or gravies put on the side so you can them use sparingly. Appetizers, soups and salads: Try plain fruit, a broth-based soup, or simple salad with dressing on the side. Avoid fried, creamed, chowders, pasta or potato salads, creamy dressings, bacon and croutons. Bean and pea soups are high in calories but also high in fiber so are very filling and may help cut down the amount of other things that you could eat. Entrees: Say NO to breaded, buttered, fried, scalloped, or au gratin. Say YES to baked, poached, steamed, stir fry, blackened, broiled or roasted. Avoid sauces, gravy, cheese, oil or mayonnaise. Don't eat the skin of poultry. Know the lean cuts of meat and remember that 3-4 ounces of meat is what is recommended for a meal. That is a piece about the size of a deck of cards. Eat that much, then take the rest home for the next day's lunch. You can even share a meal with a friend. Resign from the Clean Your Plate club. Consider a salad and hearty appetizer instead of an entrée for a meal. Sides: Plain fruits and veggies are great. Baked potato is better than scalloped, fried etc. Get low fat sour cream on the side if possible or top that potato with salsa and/or veggies. Eating: Eat the lowest calorie items first. Eat slowly, put utensils down frequently, focus on the conversation instead of the eating, box up half or cover your plate with your napkin when you start to feel full. Finish your meal by chewing some gum or a mint to freshen your mouth. Desserts: Don't expect to totally deprive yourself. Some good selections might be: fruit, sherbet, frozen yogurt, angel food cake with plain fruit, or lemon meringue pie over fruit pies a la mode. Try sharing a dessert with a friend or spouse. You can access these and other tips by goggling healthy eating while eating out or go to: Enjoy the experience while keeping your health in mind. Vicki Evenson, Parish Nurse What Can YOU Do To Reduce The Risk Of The Consequences? This diagram on the following page gives a visual and examples of what a healthy meal should like. Regular physical exercise at least 3-5 days/week can also reduce health risks.

8 Thank you for all the well wishes, cards, flowers and gifts given to us for our 50th wedding anniversary. We are blessed to have had so many wonderful years together. As we age we realize how precious each day becomes and how special our family and friends are. We are thankful for each one of you, thank you for sharing in our life! Everyday is a blessing! Carl and Susan Zweifel ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ From the family of Walter O. Clark We would like to express our appreciation for all of the prayers, kind words and support during our time of grief. Don't Forget Jesus Christmas is a special time To reflect on Jesus Christ, The wonder of His lowly birth Brings meaning to our lives There really is no other reason, We celebrate this day, The birth of God's precious son And the life, He willingly gave But so much seems to distract us In the busyness of our lives, We lose our focus in all the happenings, Not knowing, we leave out Christ We lose sight of the true meaning As we endlessly rush about, Trying to find that perfect gift, Seems to cloud our Saviour out We need to stop and reflect awhile, Remembering our precious Lord, His birth, His life and sacrifice And all that He stands for For though the world may celebrate, It seems, though, for other reasons, Let s keep in mind that Jesus Christ Is the true meaning of the season.
