We are not just a spiritual person. If our emotional or physical life is suffering, then our spiritual life suffers as well. Each week we will look at an aspect of our lives. Are we growing in our discipleship of Christ? Can we take ONE STEP? We will start on Rally Day, September 10th! We are a family. As we all join back together from the corners of the state or beyond, we gather again as family. Some of us are new members of the family and others are recent transplants or visitors. As we look at our church family, which step are you on? #1 I am a Seeker: I don t know anyone here. #2 I am a Believer: I know everyone. #3 I am a Student: I m still working on names. #4 I am a Leader: I know most of the people here, and I wish to get to know more. Why is this important? We are a family. Families know each other not just their names. We must be intentional to get to know one another. Look around on a Sunday morning. Can you name everyone? Can you tell me their occupation? Can you tell me about their parents, siblings, or children? What are their hopes, dreams, and fears? We are a family a church family a family of God. So we need to know each other, pray for each other, trust each other, and love each other. Do you have some work to do? We are a Church Family. Which step are you on? Can you take ONE STEP? Blessings, Pastor Krystal September 17th -3rd Grade Bible Presentation - ONE STEP- Bible Sermon -Baptism September 25th - ONE STEPAttendance Sermon -New Members Coming next month... In October we will continue our ONE STEP 2017 series. We will begin with World Communion and talk about our understanding of Communion. I am hoping to have breads from around the world, so if you would be willing to bake or buy a loaf, let me know! Then in October we will look at: Classes, Mission, Finances, and Emotional Health. Which step are you on? Can you take ONE STEP? 1 1

2 UMW The UMW have been faithful and active this summer. We have had a couple of programs to enrich our thinking and open our eyes to the conditions that others live with in Puerto Rico. Thanks Dorothy Arn and Rachel Jorgensen for the time and effort that you put into these programs. The Purpose of United Methodist Women The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is: To know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ. To develop a creative supportive fellowship. To expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. Upcoming Events September 5th at 9:30am Lydia Circle September 9th at 9:00am Mustard Seed September 12th at 9:00am Sewing Circle September 14th at 7pm Read It and Reap September 23rd at 8:30am Apple Festival Bazaar Next month will be a month of action for the church women. First, we have a bazaar, September 23rd, 8:30 to 2:30, to raise money for Missions. This is our biggest project, and we count on those that can make and donate items. Your donations are greatly appreciated. Every year new and beautiful items appear. So come and check them out. We also have a lunch with apple pie. So! come and eat and browse. You may find that special gift for someone. Second, we have a Southwest District Annual Gathering, in Fennimore on September 23rd. The other meetings will begin in September: Lydia Circle, September 5th, held at Winona's home and Betty will lead Lesson 22: Sewing Circle, September 12th, at 9:00, at the church: Read It and Reap, September 14th, at CarolSue Wolter's, and Mustard Seed to be announced. Mustard Seed Save the Date! Saturday, September 9th, 9:00 A.M.! Mustard Seed meets and invites you to join us in prayer, study, and fellowship as we gather to study about Leah, the unseen "Slightly Bad Girl of the Bible!" This will be the sixth chapter in the study book. You do not have to be a regular member of Mustard Seed to be a part of a fun and interesting chance to learn about another woman in the Bible. Any questions, please call Sue Wolter at Lydia Circle-Accepts the Challenge Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son. -1 John 2:22 A fight for survival is going on. The truth of the gospel rests within the promise and hope of Jesus as the Savior, Messiah, and Son of God. Come join us at Winona s home on Tuesday, September 5th, at 9:30 am, for an insightful discussion lead by Betty on Chapter 22 of Troublesome Bible Passages. We will also discuss our next study. All women of our church are joyfully invited to join us. Coffee and tea and yummy surprised await us. Sewing Circle The Sewing Circle will meet September 12th, at 9:00 a.m. We will be choosing quilts to present at the bazaar, for sale, and tying some more. Come join us for some conversation while we work. Read It and Reap: Journeys to Africa Janice McLaughlin s book, Ostriches, Dung Beetles and Other Spiritual Masters; a book of wisdom from the wild, will provide a lively discussion and laughter for all UMW readers. After more than 30 years in Africa, Ms. McLaughlin tells us about is wildlife and how to strengthen our community from the example of the elephant, to the hippopotamus that can teach us about humanity and self acceptance. We will gather for our last UMW read of 2017 at the home of Carol Sue Wolter on Thursday, September 14th, at 7 pm. Bring your suggestions from the 2018 Reading Program possibilities for discussion, noting books that are recorded. 2 2

3 Vitamins/Nutritional Supplements; How much is the right amount? Most people get adequate nutrition, including adequate vitamins and minerals, in their daily diet. Supplements are designed to be additions to the normal diet. Popping pills is not the answer to good health so the first line of advice is to eat a well-balanced diet with the recommended proteins, fruits and vegetables. However, there may be times when we are not able to get an adequate diet or our health needs a boost. When going to pick the appropriate product we find a multitude of choices with a veritable alphabet soup on the labels. Don t despair, these are guidelines set up by the Institute of Medicine to help people understand how much of the vitamins and minerals should be taken. The amounts of the vitamins in the product are identified as the RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowance) and AI (Adequate Intake). These are the amounts of the vitamins that are determined to be what the body needs to stay healthy and well-nourished. Often times you will see different but specific amounts for men and women. The Food and Drug Administration uses yet another measure for the nutrients. This is the DV (Daily Value). With limited space on the labels, this is the only number you usually will find on the labels. This number is actually the amount of vitamin that a person should get from a well-balanced, healthy 2,000 calorie/day diet. This number is sometimes the same as the RDA, but not always. Since some of the supplements can have risks for higher than recommended doses. Many of the vitamins can be taken safely at higher doses as they are simply excreted in the urine. For those vitamins that may have untoward effects at those higher doses the labels must identify the UL (Tolerable Upper Intake Level). The UL is the maximum amount of daily vitamins and minerals that a person can take without risk of serious side effects. For certain nutrients, the higher you go, the greater the chance you will have problems. Some of the common nutrients that can cause toxic effects would include: Vitamins A,D, E and K, iron, calcium, sodium, zinc and selenium. The Institute of Medicine has determined the upper limits (UL) for 24 nutrients. This is for adults ages 19 years and older. Remember it does not apply to women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. The UL is not a number that most people know about as it is not listed on the nutrition label or vitamin bottle. Even physicians often do not know the exact upper limit numbers for every vitamin. If you are taking more than the DV it is recommended that you check out the UL. This can be done by asking your pharmacist to check the UL for specific nutritional supplements or by googling Upper Limits of Vitamins for a complete listing. I know this is a bothersome process but vitamins are another situation of wrongfully thinking if a little is good, a lot is better! Don t do more harm than good by taking megavitamins. As our church family continues to grow, Danielle, Denise, and Vicki donate countless hours of time, talents, and treasures to make Brodhead UMC the special place we call our second home. In order to address the problem of being understaffed, we are refilling the vacant assistant office position, which consists of 10 hours per week. We are also seeking an assistant custodian for 10 hours a week. If you or someone you know would be interested, please speak with the office. While we are not financially able to hire for the amount of hours needed at this time, this will at least help ease the burden on our staff.
