1 Brodhead United Methodist Church st Center Ave., Brodhead, WI brodheadumc@gmail.com Church Office Hours Monday-Friday 9am-12pm, 1pm-3pm To contact Pastor Krystal: June 2016 School may be out, but church is not It is that time of year again Summer! What are your plans? Vacation? Cabin? Relaxing? Summer School? Fishing? Boating? Where is church in all those plans? There is a saying that if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Where is church in your summer plans? The church is not closed during the summer, we are still open! We still worship here on Sundays! I continue to spend time preparing to preach sermons during the summer and the secretary still writes and prints the bulletin. Our pianists prepare and practice each week to lead music in worship. The ushers and greeters show up each Sunday and the communion stewards set up communion. We are open for worship! While you may come and go with your summer plans, we will be here to worship and praise God every Sunday. So I invite you to make church part of your summer plans. When you are in town, I invite you to come to worship. (Though sleeping in may sound fun, remember, God doesn t sleep in.) When you are out of town, I encourage you to find a church where ever you may be. If you cannot find a church, try to worship as a family. Sing hymns, read scriptures, and ask one another where they see God present. School may be out, but church is not. Let s face it, when summer finally gets here it s like recess everyone takes some time off or away from the usual routine and it s no different at church. Whether folks are off on vacation or just taking a day off from church, we see attendance take a dip. I am less worried about the numbers as I am with your spiritual health. Once you get out of the habit of regular worship, it becomes a habit not to go to church and pretty soon it s been more than a few weeks it s been months! Church is an important part of Christian discipleship. It is good for you to be with other Christians and with God. We miss you when you re not here! Your presence is valued in worship. We miss you, but more than that, God misses you. It may be nice outside, but don t forget you also need Son-shine! It s too nice not to be inside for a while. Plus we are going to worship outside for Bring Your Tractor to Church Sunday! What are your summer plans? School may be out, but church is not. Summer is here. Enjoy the Son-shine! God Bless, Pastor Krystal Goodger

2 The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is: To know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ. To develop a creative supportive fellowship. To expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. UMW Mustard Seed- Save the Date! Mustard Seed will not be meeting during the month of June. We will meet again on Saturday, July 9th to discuss Rebekah the wife from Liz Curtis Higgs Slightly Bad Girls of the Bible. Sue Wolter will be leading. We will begin at 9am for fellowship, study, and prayer. Come and join us! Please contact Sue Wolter at with any questions. The Purpose of United Methodist Women Life is good! As I read the UMW Mission U study book on Latin America, I realize that we have it pretty good here in the United States of America. Granted all countries have there problems, and areas of concern with health and welfare, but many countries have unstable governments, inadequate programs for the needy and poor health care. That is why it is so important for the UMW to support missions, not only to provide money for food and clothing, but to send missionaries to teach them how to help themselves. It was great that the Sunday School kids were so excited to raise enough money, for 30 pigs, to send to Cambodia. It is great that Deanna Shimko is able to go to Cambodia, coordinate programs, and help the people to help themselves have a better life. Thanks to all that have donated to both missions. The UMW unit will go to Pleasant View Nursing Home for the June birthday party. We will provide cake and prizes for bingo. We help the people to come to the commons area and play bingo with them until all have at least one prize. We will leave the church at 1:00 p.m., on Tuesday June 14th. Come join us. Lydia Circle The Lydia Circle will meet for an 11:30am luncheon June 9th, at Franklin s Grove, Attica, N7302 Cty Rd X, Albany. Please don t forget to bring a friend with you! Be at the church at 10:45 for ride sharing. The Underground Girls of Kabul Read It and Reap Discussion On Wednesday, July 13th, Read It and Reap will meet at the home of Janice Davenport at 7 pm to discuss The Underground Girls of Kabul by Jenny Nordberg. In Afghanistan, where the birth of a son is celebrated and the arrival of a daughter is mourned, a bacha posh ( dressed up like a boy in Dari) is a third kind of child...a girl raised as a boy with all the opportunities and freedoms boys enjoy. Written by the reporter who covered the phenomenon for the New York Times, this is the story of Azita, a female parliamentarian who sees no other choice for her fourth daughter. Twenty copies are available through our librarian system...please join us as we discuss this challenging story. Rides are always available...call Mary, , or Janice, Sewing Circle The Sewing Circle (Quilting Circle) meets every 2nd Tuesday of the month. We put together and tie lap robes for the people in local nursing homes and Care Net. You don't need to know how to sew to come and help us. So, put June 14th at 9:00 a.m. on your calendar for helping a good cause.

3 First Aid Since we are coming into summer, camping season and in general the time when we are outside recreating and working there may be in increase in the risk of injuries. It may be important for you to know some basic information on first aid. Provision of basic first aid does not require any licensure or special preparation. Knowing some very basic measures may mean the difference between life and death. The 4 Ps to remember are: preserve life, protect those unable to protect themselves, prevent further injury, and promote recovery. Let s start with traumatic injuries. This can include vehicle accidents, falls, diving into shallow water, or a sporting or work-related accident. Initially you must assess the situation so you and others trying to help do not become injured. Call for help by dialing 911 and providing location information. You will need to give as history of the incident as you know, what occurred, number of casualties, state of injuries, numbness of hands or feet or limitations in mobility or function. Stay calm and do not move the victim(s) or allow them to move. The only exception to this is to turn the person on their side to ensure that the airway is kept clear. Handle gently with no twisting and with minimal movement of the head, neck and torso. Lightly cover open wounds. If bleeding is active apply direct pressure, elevate wound if possible, and restrict movement. If a foreign object is embedded in the wound, do not remove that object. Use pads, dressings or bandages to apply pressure around that object. Should amputations occur keep the part clean, cool, and dry as possible. Do not wash or get wet and do not pack directly on ice. Teeth that may be knocked out should be picked up by the crown, rinsed off and kept moist until a dentist can replace them. Teeth can be stored in milk or even tucked in the victim s mouth between the cheek and gum if the person is conscious and alert. Do not wrap the teeth in tissue. If the person faints or shows sign of shock, lay them down flat, keep them warm and raise and support the legs. Do not allow them to sit in a chair or allow to sit or to stand up quickly. If fractures are apparent, avoid moving the injured part and immobilize it in the position you find it. Do not try to straighten broken bones or moved the injured person unless they are in danger. Dislocations should be treated much the same. Ice or cold compresses may reduce or prevent swelling and offer some pain relief. Treatments of strains and sprains can follow this simple acronym; RICER=Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevate and Refer to medical aid. Ice should be wrapped and not applied directly to the skin. Use ice for minutes every 2 hours for the first hours. Animal bite wounds should be cleansed thoroughly with soap and water, then soak wound and finally, cover with a sterile dressing. Consult with a medical provider to determine if rabies vaccination may be needed. Tetanus vaccination may be needed for any wounds where there is a break in the skin. Tetanus boosters are needed every ten years throughout adulthood just to keep a person s titer at a safe level to prevent this potentially deadly infection. Safety is always the best policy but when accidents happen use these simple steps to deal with the resulting injuries. Vicki Evenson, Parish Nurse

5 To Dad Dad, you re great; you ve always been. Your hope and prodding, too, Have made me see what I can do. I really treasure you! When I was younger You always urged me onto the truth And growth and goodness great With beauty full and fond. Your understanding spirit And your fairness every time, Your thoughtfulness and patience, I now say thanks in rhyme Each year as I grow older And learn life s lessons bold, I sense you greatness growing; You re worth your weight in gold. Yet gold can never precious be As you are, Dad, right now. Along life s path, when things Seemed hard, you always showed me how: To best look at options, To best trust an inner urge, To see that each experience Has learning that it serves. Please know that I appreciate And can never repay. I ll try to do and be like you MY THANKS TO YOU TODAY!! ~ds Dear Lord, Today we bring these young graduates before You asking You to keep Your hand of protection upon them. Pease guide their steps in the days ahead as they embark on this new journey before them. Grant them wisdom to make wise decisions according to Your will. May the road before them be paved with joyous opportunities that bring honor and glory to You. In the precious name of Jesus we pray. Amen. Congratulations Graduates! Blake, Cameron, Cheyenne, Rachel, Ann, Ashley, and Katie. The greatest gift I ever had came from God, I call him Dad. Family Promise As I write this we are coming to a close on another wonderful host week. We have been greatly blessed to be able to assist those in need. I am greatly blessed to have so many individuals in this congregation willing to serve this program in so many ways. I would like to encourage anyone who may feel called to participate in Family Promise to contact myself, or anyone involved with Family Promise to discuss options for serving. We are in need of more individuals to do the overnights during our host week. This requires being in the building overnight, locking doors, sleeping, unlocking doors in the morning, and preparing breakfast. Please take some time to pray about how you could participate in this life-changing program. It is truly an opportunity to reach out to others in Christian charity and love. God Bless, Julie Hodgson Family Promise Coordinator
