But in the midst of life, sometimes it s just hard to find the time. Schedules fill up quickly, work consumes our thoughts at night, family and friends vie for our attention, and then there s this thing called sleep. And now we come to May; one of the busiest months of the year. There are Mother s Day brunches, school finals, end of year awards banquets, graduation, confirmation, Memorial Day celebration have I got your heart rate up yet? Most people know the importance of spending time with God. How do you fit it all in? What do you let drop? What do you do when you simply need 36 hours in a day instead of 24? There can be many reasons and causes for our busy lives. But, no matter the reason, no matter the season, no matter how busy our schedule gets, God demands our Pastor s Corner worship. This is not meant to fulfill some power trip God has, it is because we need to take a moment for a sacred pause for our own physical, emotional and spiritual health. The sisters, Mary and Martha are a good example of this. When you read the story, it is easy to presume that Martha is in the wrong caring for the needs of the guests. Yet, Jesus is clear that the problem isn t what Martha is doing physically, it is what she is doing mentally, saying, Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but only one thing is necessary. Luke 10: And her sister figured out. This was a time for a sacred pause. I hope as you dive into your May schedules, you will make time for God. And trust that your investment of time in the sacred pause will nourish and rejuvenate you, in a way that brings peace that surpasses all understanding. Mark your calendar, Sunday, May 7, there will be a potluck at Zion following the 10:45 service, which will include some of the flavors of Israel. After the potluck Pastor Vicki and Howard will be presenting a talk on their impressions of the trip to Israel. Bring a dish, bring a friend, bring your appetite.

2 Judean Tidings Page 2 of 8 The Historical Corner by Hazel Matzke, Historian MUSIC MUSIC MUSIC MUSIC The 150 th celebration of the congregation of Zion Church will continue on Sunday, May 7 th with an all-music worship service. Theme for the day is Recounting Blessings Through Music. Through the years we have tried to sing joyfully to the Lord (Psalm 33) as shown by the following examples: In 1929 on Palm Sunday there was an all-music service featuring the Evangelical Jr. Orchestra, directed by J. A. Hughes. Rev. Peter Retzlaff ( ) enlivened many services by playing his musical saw. The Retzlaff sons (Wesley, Paul, Jim, and Peter) joined their voices in harmony in the 1909 red-brick church for several years. In the 1950s and 60s a popular men s quartet consisting of Melvin Siedschlag, Elmer Matzke, Wm. Smith, and Irvin Matzke entertained at many special events. Their signature song was On The Jericho Road. More recently the Smith Family Singers (Dolores and Dorothy Feldt, Sharon Creuzer, Ann Trow, Frieda Siedschlag and Linda Alderks) made us happy with their selections. There was a High School girls group (Joyce Ruef (Hoesly), Judy Ronspiez, Beverly Starke, and Mary Brunkow) who joined their voices for the congregation. For a few years a young adult Praise Band was organized. There were instrumental numbers by the trio of Betty Siedschlag, Larry Siedschlag, and Dolores Feldt, and we remember the sweet sounds of Trish Hoesly and her flute. We always thrilled when the Alumni 4 quartet joined together in praise to the Lord. A children s choir has been enlivening services for many years. Currently known as The Celebration Station and directed by Aurora Daniels, we enjoy their enthusiastic selections. Nearly 20 years ago a Hand Bell choir was organized. Directed by JoAnn Eberle, we welcome their joyous sounds in the sanctuary. And our wonderful Senior Choir, organized in 1920 and faithfully lifting their voices in song during worship services. Directed by Shelly Jordan, they annually present Easter and Christmas cantatas to bless the community with their messages in song and drama. Piano and organ selections have filled the church with music on Sunday mornings. We especially remember the duets of Bobette Preston and Julie Zimmerman and recently the joyous sounds of JoAnn Hawthorn and JoAnn Eberle. There were also the summer Sunday morning concerts by sisters JoAnn Hawthorn and Shirley Lindsay. Also musicians Esther Larson, Mabel Bouer, Mardelle Matzke, Dolores Feldt, Kathy Broger, and many others. Thank you! The May 7 th service will include familiar hymns through the decades, historical monologues, historical displays, etc. Be sure to attend this special celebration. Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord. Psalm 95:1 (Ladies, in honor of the women s quartet from the early 1900s, shown below, let s all wear our hats on May 7 th.)

In Christian Sympathy We send our prayers for comfort and peace to Jim and Mike McCullough and their families on the passing of their mother, Jeannette on April 7 th. Judean Tidings On Saturday, April 8 th, a few by Dennis members of the group joined the Pfingsten, Youth Juda Fore Fathers in their annual roadside cleanup around Juda. Leader Thank you Fore Fathers for all the work you do for our community!! After the cleanup, we were treated to pizza and soda. The group held their annual Easter Sonrise Breakfast on Easter Sunday. Thank you to everyone who attended and made this another successful event. On Sunday, April 23 rd, a small contingency made their way to Lindo Theatre in Freeport to see that movie The Case For Christ. Future activities for the group include helping with the packaging of meals for the Kids Around the World project, a summer trip with the Juda Recreation District and finally helping in July with the Green County Food Pantry. Finally, I would like to recognize the six students who are seniors and graduating this year. They are Sara Jordan, Riley Adkins, Skyler Stuckey, Jack Speckman, Aurora Daniels and Matt Schmitt. Thank you so much for all you have done for the group over the past years. It has been a great pleasure for me to have had the opportunity to work with you in so many ways and to see you grow in your faith. I wish each and every one of you all the best as you further your education and continue to grow. If your past successes are any indication of the future, all of you are going to make a positive impact in our world. Thanks again, you will all be missed!! As a reminder, empty aluminum cans may be dropped off at my house at W2926 Main Street and empty inkjet cartridges along with used cell phones, I pods and now useable digital cameras can be dropped in the collection boxes located at both churches. We can also raise funds by recycling old toner cartridges from copy machines. Please contact me before you leave them in the collection boxes so I can verify that your cartridge qualifies for recycling. As always, thanks for your continued support of our youth!! Kids communion May 3, :00 in Juda-Zion UMC Sanctuary. This is an opportunity for kids up to sixth grade to get a better understanding of the communion meal we experience each month. (Note: You are welcome to attend with your child.) If you would like your child/grandchild/young friend to be a part of this learning experience, please contact the church office or speak with Pastor Vicki.

4 Lord, hold our troops in Your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. We ask this in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus. Amen. A very heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated in all the different aspects of our choir musical, One Voice. All we do is for the Glory of God and it takes everyone to make it as special as it was. We were blessed to have full and overflowing sanctuaries for both performances. Thank you for helping to plant the seeds of God s Word in their hearts. May you be blessed many times over in return for your time that you invested to touch people! With many thanks, Shelly. 5 Page 5 of 8 Judean Tidings LIBRARY Books/Videos/DVD s featured this month. Come Rain or Come Shine by Jan Karon (Fiction). In Come Rain or Come Shine, Jan Koran delivers a wedding that millions of Mitford fans have waited for. It s a June day in the mountains, with more than a few creatures great and small, and you re invited because you re family. By the way, it s a pretty casual affair, so come as you are and remember to bring a tissue or two. After all, what s a good wedding without a good cry? If I Had Lunch With C.S. Lewis by Alister McGrath(Reference) What if you could ask C. S. Lewis his thoughts on some of the most difficult questions of life? If you could, the result would be Dr. Alister McGrath s provocative and perceptive book, If I Had Lunch with C.S. Lewis. Best-selling author, prominent academic, and sought-after speaker, Dr. McGrath sees C.S. Lewis as the perfect conversation companion for the persistent meaning-of-life questions everyone asks. DVD: Flywheel Pastor Vicki and Howard will again be going on a prayer walk throughout Juda, May 6 at 8:30 am, starting from Zion s parking lot. If walking isn t your thing you can be part of a driving team who goes through rural areas of our community praying. It is a time to do more outdoor activities and take care of any extra pounds the winter may have put on. But, why is it that no matter how many walks taken or how many bike rides, some people just can't seem to lose weight? The answer may lie in a study done by Hirofumi Misu of the Kanazawa Graduate School of Medical Sciences in Japan. This study was done on both mice and human subjects and found that the higher the blood levels of a glycoprotein (basically a protein with sugar attached to it) known as selenoprotein-p directly correlated with a subject's inability to lose weight. Selenoprotein-P is produced in the liver. Its exact role is still being studied, but general consensus from researchers is that it helps in taking selenium (a mineral that helps with metabolism, but too much can be hard on the liver, kidneys and heart) and transport it to different body organs. The study done on the mice showed that by administering selenoprotein-p to them, the mice were unable to absorb a crucial enzyme that aids in metabolism within their muscles affecting exercise endurance thus preventing the weight loss benefits from the exercise. The researchers then looked at the human subjects. They asked 31 women to engage Parish Nurse, Darlene Becker in 8 weeks of aerobic exercise training. Researchers found that the women who had higher levels of selenoprotein-p in their blood were not only unable to endure the aerobic exercise as well as those with normal levels, but were also unable to lose weight. Interestingly, the researchers found in the mice study that those mice deficient in selenoprotein-p actually could double the amount of exercise and had greater benefit from it. The potential benefit from this study is that it provides another piece to the puzzle as to why some people lose weight easily and others don't. And with more studies like this one researchers may finally come up with that magic pill for weight loss that anyone wanting to shed unwanted pounds would love. "Spend your time and energy in training yourself for spiritual fitness. Physical exercise has some value, but spiritual exercise is much more important for it promises a reward in both this life and the next. This is true and everyone should accept it. 1 Timothy 4:7-9 (NLT) *Information from the National Institutes of Health and from Medical News Today were used in the making of this article.* Women's Retreat: Seaside Escape. 10 Zion United Methodist Church Non-Profit Organization P.O. Box 118 Juda, WI U.S. Postage Paid Address Service Requested Permit No. 3, Juda, WI New Sermon Series Starting April 30 th Christians have long focused too much on other people's sins, especially non-christians. Turning the microscope on ourselves, it becomes all too clear in light of Jesus' perfect example of righteousness and the sheer holiness of God how unrighteous we are by comparison. We like to comfort ourselves with the fact we haven't committed certain big sins, like murder, adultery, theft, but what makes the Seven Deadly Sins, though not directly biblical, but more insightful than the Ten Commandments is their smallness. The seven are the quiet, internal roots of so many other sins. Come join us April 30 th - June 11 th in Taking a New Look at the Seven Deadly Sins.
