As we approach the season of Thanksgiving, I find that I m drawn back again to a section of 1 Thessalonians where Paul is giving some of his best advice to the church at Thessalonica: Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God s will for you in Christ Jesus. (1 Thess. 5:16-18) Mental health professionals have come to recognize the benefits of thankfulness in people s lives. But they also recognize the thankfulness is not a normal state of affairs we need to learn it and practice it. This month, are you willing to try something different? Get yourself a pack of sticky notes. At the end of each day, write onto a sticky note THREE things for which you are thankful. Put the sticky note someplace that you ll see it frequently (your bathroom mirror, your refrigerator). Add a new sticky note each day with the new day s gratitudes. Then, the first time you see the notes the next day, lift up a prayer of gratitude for these blessings in your life. It can change your whole outlook! If you use Facebook, come visit our page and post one of your day s thanks items. Let s see how long and varied of a list we can create! I d like to share my first thankfulness items with you. First, I am thankful for God s guidance of my life and leading me into this path which I love. Second, I am thankful for each of you. Our fledgling relationships are blessing (and challenging) my life in new ways each and every day. Third, I am thankful for the response of the church to the Flood Bucket Challenge. I put in front of you all a challenge to create seven buckets before the end of October. And on October 14 th, I delivered EIGHT! (See the picture) There are three more which are mostly completed (who knew it was so difficult to find oz cleaning solution?!). Those will be completed and delivered this week! Just the fact that our two churches are reaching out to flood victims in such a concrete and helpful way is heartwarming. Thank you all for your response! May this month bring new awareness to all of us of the many many blessings which God showers us with daily. Shalom!

In November we celebrate Thanksgiving Day. Centuries ago King David wrote many Psalms expressing his thankfulness to God. During each week in November read the Psalm indicated and, as an act of thankfulness, put the number of coins indicated in the noisy offering each Sunday. Week of Nov. 1-5: Read Psalm 100:1-5 (A Psalm for giving thanks). The Psalm has 5 verses, place 5 coins in the noisy offering. Week of Nov. 6-12: Read Psalm 107:1-43 (An exhortation to praise and give thanks to the Lord). The Psalm has 43 verses, place 43 coins in the noisy offering. Week of Nov : Read Psalm 118:1-29. (A hymn of thanksgiving for deliverance from enemies.). The Psalm has 29 verses, place 29 coins in the noisy offering. Week of Nov : Read Psalm 136:1-26. (A litany of praise and thanksgiving). 4 Judean Tidings Page 4 of 8 Word of the Day November 10 Things You Won t Find In A Church That Attracts Millennials 5. There is a pervasive insider-focused mentality Traditional or contemporary worship? High church or low church? Past generations have invested a lot of time in these discussions, but most Millennials see them as sideways energy. Millennials won t attend churches that answer questions nobody is asking. What s important to Millennials is how the church responds to the lost in the world, both locally and globally. 6. Transparency and authenticity are not high values If your church portrays a holier than thou mentality and most of the sermons leave everyone feeling like terrible people, your church will be largely without the next generation! Millennials are not looking for perfect people Jesus already handled that! Millennials are looking for people to be real and honest about struggles and temptations. 7. Mentoring is not important Millennials, while they don t like paternalistic leadership, do value learning from past generations. (Continued on page 5) 1. Christ s Table 2. Affinity 3. Nicknames 4. A total of 35 pints is needed each blood drive in order to give out $2,500 in scholars. At the last blood drive we only received 28 pints. Please call the Red Cross today to make your appointment!! Call or visit online at We would like to thank you for sponsoring and volunteering at our September Loaves and Fishes Community Meal. Your sponsorship and preparation of the meal enabled us to feed people a nutritious, hot meal without charge to our guests, it helped continue our mission of Building community through food and fellowship. I understand that the night was a great success with approximately 100 guests including numerous volunteers. We hope we can count on you to sponsor us in the future. Thanks again, Susan M. 5 Page 5 of 8 Judean Tidings LIBRARY Books/Videos/DVD s featured this month. Amish Christmas by Cindy Woodsmall, Amanda Flower, Emily Clark, and Katie Ganshert (Fiction). Experience the coziness of an Amish Christmas in this collection of different Amish tales by four different authors. You can imagine the sights, sounds, and tastes of Christmas as experienced by the different Amish families portrayed in this combination book. Secrets of the Vine by Bruce Wilkinson (Thought Provoking). In the Secrets of the Vine Bible Study, Bruce Wilkinson shows groups or individual readers how the three Secrets of the Vine introduced in the bestselling book are supported throughout Scripture, applying sound biblical insight to help them move toward making maximum impact for God. This Bible study provides a personal encounter with the life-changing teaching of Jesus in John 15, an inspiring look at God s intervention in His children s lives from Bible times to the present, a practical approach to a meaningful relationship with Him, and a visual and interactive learning tool for individual or group use. Video: Where Was God 10 Things Millennials (Con t) 8. Culture is viewed as the enemy Millennials are tired of the church viewing culture as the enemy. The next generation is trying to find ways to ENGAGE culture for the glory of God. The goal of Christian living isn t to escape the evils of culture and finish life unharmed. To reach people today, the church must be immersed in the community. 9. Community is not valued Community is a non-negotiable part of their lives. And they aren t looking for another group of people to watch the Packers play football on Sunday they desire a Christ-centered community. They value a community that moves beyond the surface and asks the hard questions. 10. The church is a source of division and not unity Nothing frustrates Millennials more than a church that doesn t value unity. Jesus brought together tax collectors and zealots (do some research if you want to find out how hard THAT would have been). Millennials want to be in environments where everyone feels welcomed and accepted. Zion Finance Committee At the recent Admin Council meeting, the Council approved the recommendation of the Finance Committee to keep the congregation updated each month regarding the financial standing of the Zion United Methodist Church. A brief overview of the numbers to get you up to speed. The budget for calendar year 2017 is $140,561. This budget includes salaries for the Pastor, organist, choir director, secretary and custodian. It also includes expenses for the operation of the church such as Sunday School materials, VBS, piano tuning, bulletins, worship committee items, library materials, office supplies, copier expenses, utilities, lawn mowing, snow removal, building insurance, liability insurance, floor maintenance and maintenance contracts. Included also is our apportionment expense of $15,744. We will not include in the expense numbers the money needed to repair the stained glass windows, and will not include the income received for the windows in the income number as this item is outside the realm of the budget and is above and beyond the normal expenses of the church. To make the presentation of numbers easier, we will divide the budget into 12 months or $11,713 per month to meet all our budgeted obligations. The income figure given will include envelope offerings, loose offerings and money for missions, as missions are part of the budget. Going forward, the numbers presented will include the most recent month we have numbers for, it will show money received for the month and year to date along with expenses for the month and year to date and then the variance for the month and year to date. We hope you find this information helpful. If you have any questions on the information presented, please contact Chip Matzke, Treasurer or Dennis Pfingsten, Finance Committee Chair. 6 P.O. Box 118 Juda, Wisconsin PHONE: (608) Judean Tidings Page 6 of 8 Parish Nurse, Darlene Becker One in four people worldwide will die from conditions caused by blood clots (thrombosis). October 13th was World Thrombosis Day, and I thought I would bring awareness and information about blood clots to you. Normally when there is a cut or an open wound, the body's normal response is to send clotting factors within the blood to begin stopping the flow of blood out of the wound. Eventually gel-like clumps of blood will form and in normal situations, stop the bleeding. These clumps eventually harden into scabs. facebook.com/jzouumc We are on the web MISSION STATEMENT: Growing within Sowing throughout Sometimes, these gel-like clumps form in the veins of the legs causing clots, also known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), to develop. Symptoms of DVT are swelling of the affected leg. Redness and pain at the site where the clot is lodged. The affected area may also feel warmer to the touch. The danger with DVT is that the clot can dislodge and travel to the lungs causing a pulmonary embolism. The symptoms of a pulmonary embolism are: sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, coughing up blood, and rapid pulse. Pulmonary embolism is a life threatening medical emergency requiring hospitalization. The causes of DVT can be due to medical conditions that predispose a person to the development of clots such as Factor 5 (a clotting factor condition), diabetes, or atherosclerosis. Other causes can be genetic in nature. If you have/had a relative who has had DVT and/or pulmonary embolism, your risk has increased. Some DVTs are caused by medications that can increase your risk of developing a DVT such as birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy. Some predispositions can be prevented by life style changes: obesity, smoking, or sedentary life style. There are some things that can be done to help prevent DVT. Regular exercise is very important for preventing so many unwanted conditions including DVT. When traveling by car, make frequent stops to get out and move around, and if traveling by plane, get up and walk in the aisle as much as you can Last, but not least, make those lifestyle changes that you CAN make such as stop smoking, lose weight, and don't be a "couch potato," get up and move! "When you walk, your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you will not stumble." Proverbs 4: 12 (NIV) **Information from the Mayo Clinic was used in the making of this article.** Reminder In the event Sunday School and Church are cancelled due to inclement weather you may refer to radio station WEKZ, our website joumc.org or our Facebook page for potential cancellations.

We would like to do a mass update of the database and gather as much information as possible. Many of you no longer have landlines and we don't have a cell-phone number. We are missing many milestone dates. All this information helps us to stay in contact and minister to you better. If you do not want your phone number listed anywhere, please let us know that. If you don't want us to know how old you are, that's fine, but we'd still love to recognize you on your special day -- simply write in the month and date and leave off the year. These forms can be turned in at the back of either church in the labeled envelope. Thank you for bringing us up to date! 9 Zion United Methodist Church Non-Profit Organization P.O. Box 118 Juda, WI U.S. Postage Paid Address Service Requested Permit No. 3, Juda, WI Shepherds And Kings From award-winning creative songwriting team Joel Lindsey and Jeff Bumgardner, with script by Dr. Heidi Petak, Word Music & Church Resources proudly presents the new Dramatic Christmas Musical - Shepherds And Kings. For many of us, Christmas is a time of joy and celebration, a time to be spent with family and friends...a festive, happy time. But for others, the same holiday season only serves to underscore the loneliness, pain, and hopelessness of their own lives. In our story, Susanna King s bright spirit and love for life overrides her circumstances; you see, Susanna has been recently diagnosed with cancer. But in spite of bad news and challenging times, she lives with the joy of Christmas in her heart. Others (like our character Mrs. Victoria Shepherd, in spite of being wealthy and in good health) find no reason to celebrate the Christmas season, largely because they have no joy in their lives. It is with this premise that our story begins. Mrs. Shepherd is a regular customer at Mattiello s Diner. Susanna, a waitress at the diner, has discovered that today is Mrs. Shepherd s birthday. Despite her battle with cancer Susanna has made it her goal to help Mrs. Shepherd celebrate her birthday and hopefully impart a little Christmas spirit in the process. Susanna, her group of friends from church who are singing carols just outside the diner, and Mr. Mattiello, the owner of the diner, are all in on the plan to bring some special joy into Mrs. Shepherd s life. But they are in for a challenge, as Mrs. Shepherd is a reluctant participant in any kind of celebration birthday or Christmas! Susanna is determined to show love and share the message of Christmas with someone who is in desperate need to know that God loves and cares for her. Zion and Union Choirs will present this Christmas musical at Zion Church on Sunday, December 3rd and Sunday December 10th at 1:30pm. There is no charge for admission, but a free will offering may be left after the performance.
