Take the Nutley Street exit off Rt. 66. Go toward Fairfax. At the Lee Highway traffic light make a right and then at the second light on Lee Highway make a right onto Vaden. There is a green sign before the light for the center. Once on Vaden get in the left lane and at the first turn lane go into the entrance for the center. Parking is behind the center. Please come in the front door. Annual Luncheon Save the date! Please plan to join us on Saturday, July 15th for the 2017 NCC Annual Luncheon. It will be held at the Holiday Inn, College Park, MD, which is right off the beltway at Route 1. Our theme this year is "Winter Wonderland," so be sure to come to meet up with some of your long lost friends, or just people you don't see often. Plan to finish some of your UFOs to donate to the raffles. More information to follow in the next newsletter. 3 The Capitole Record February/March 2017 Page!3 President s Corner First, I want to apologize to the Chapter for the confusion on where we were meeting. Ann Davis is the contact person for the Community Center, since I do not live in Fairfax County. Ann found out on Thursday before our meeting that the Center was closed on the Saturday of our meeting. Ann tried the Hermitage and they were not as responsive as I would have liked, so we had the meeting at my house. Again, sorry for the confusion. Ann also found out that the Center is closed on the Saturday of our February Paint-in, so we will be meeting at the Hermitage in the Penthouse. I know many of you do not check you s very often, but you should as things change. I want to Congratulate Ann Gibbons on receiving the Founders Medallion Award for Thanks Ann for all you do for our Chapter. BIG THANKS go to Mary Steingesser for teaching the Laurie Speltz project. Mary came a long way to teach this to us. I think everyone had a great time. It was a very relaxing afternoon. At the meeting, many members volunteered to teach either a paint-in or an after meeting program. Coming up, Ann Davis will teach a quick wood frog on a wine glass in February, Lucy Jo Wirth will be teaching a Lighthouse landscape on a mini canvas in March, in April Bobbie Draves will be teaching a piece on a glass block, I will be teaching a Christmas Tree design in May after the Art Show. Sandy Scales and John Kirzl also volunteered to teach. So, we are on a roll. Please read your newsletter for great things to come. July is our Luncheon and it is in Maryland this year. The theme is Winter Wonderland. It will be a fun time for all. Until we see each other, Happy Painting. Lorraine Founders Medallion Congratulations to Ann Gibbons 2016 Founder s Medallion Winner This year s recipient of the Founder s Medallion has been a member of NCC since Since the moment she joined she has been an active member. She has served on many committees including luncheon and community service. She has helped with setup and takedown with the art show, and also helps with the nominating committee and historian. This year she co-chaired the luncheon. Ann has been our representative for 2 years so she is aways out there getting people to come and join in the activities. She has been a great asset to our Board. 5 The Capitole Record February/March 2017 Page!5 Nation s Capital Chapter General Membership Minutes of the Meeting Saturday, January 21, 2017 Meeting was held in Lorraine Lasch s home, Manassas, VA, and was called to order at 10:25 a.m. President Lorraine Lasch noted that future meetings will be held at Providence Community Center. MOTION: Ann Davis moved that the minutes of the last meeting be approved as printed in the newsletter. Marina Malcolm seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. Finance Kathy Bacskay reported a balance of $6, Membership Sandy Scales reported 37 members, which includes one new member. Quorum is 5. Representative Ann Gibbons introduced the programs for 2017: January, Mary Steingesser with a welcome sign with frogs; February, Ann Davis with a frog design on a wine glass; March, Lucy Jo with a beach landscape; April, Bobbie Draves with a gingerbread on glass block or 8x8 surface of choice; May, NCC Art Show and a small landscape with Lorraine Lasch; May, Sandy Scales; July is the luncheon; events for June, September, October and November TBA. The executive board set a $5 fee to secure place at painting events, returnable upon attendance. Newsletter: John Kirzl requested submissions by February 1. Community Service: 18 painted head forms were delivered to Ft. Belvoir in December. Children s boxes will be delivered to the pediatric wing at a later date head forms will go to Bethesda. Brookside Gardens will collect gourds, as well as any large pots or birdhouses members paint. Historian: The committee has merged with newsletter. Pictures will be posted in the newsletter. Ann Davis will digitalize old scrapbooks over the next year, and then she will share old pictures with membership. Luncheon: Mary Steingesser and Bobbie Draves have chosen A Winter Wonderland as the theme for the luncheon on July 15, 2017 to be held at the Holiday Inn in College Park, MD. With declining NCC membership and attendance, restaurants will also be considered for future venues. Nominating No report. Parliamentarian No report. Public Relations NCC is scheduled for display in the Montclair Library for November Ann Davis suggested checking with the Oakton Library. Seminar Ann Davis and Kathy Bacskay would be interested in artist suggestions from general membership. Sunshine Ann Pielert fell and is recovering from a broken pelvis, Betsy Thomas had cataract surgery, Fran Schmitt has a bad cold, Kay Brown is hoping to have knee replacement surgery soon, Cheryl Saggers is recovering from knee replacement surgery, and Lorraine Lasch continues to recover from a knee injury. Webmaster No report. MOTION: Ann Davis moved to accept the budget for The motion was seconded by John Kirzl and it passed unanimously. Special Raffle Special Raffle 2016 netted $332. There is no special raffle currently planned for Founders Medallion Peg Altemus presented members given awards in the past. Congratulations to this year s winner, Ann Gibbons.

Art Scholarship is suspended for Shirley Holden has passed away, as has founding member, Ann Foster. The meeting adjourned at 11:20 for lunch and painting led by Mary Steingesser. President Lorraine Lasch noted that executive meetings will be held via or just prior to general meetings. MOTION: Ann Gibbons moved that the committee chairs be approved as presented. John Kirzl seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. MOTION: Kathy Bacskay moved that the 2017 Budget be approved as presented and modified. Ann Davis seconded the motion and it passes unanimously. The theme for Luncheon 2017 is Winter Wonderland. Discussion for the location in 2018 will be introduced at the general meeting. MOTION: Ann Davis moved that the budget for Luncheon 2017 be approved as presented and modified. Marie Kirzl seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. Membership: There are 37 paid members, which included one member new to NCC. Programs: January, Mary Steingesser with a welcome sign with frogs; February, Ann Davis with a frog design on a wine glass; March, Lucy Jo with a beach landscape; April, Bobbie Draves with a gingerbread on glass block or 8x8 surface of Community Service: 39 head forms were painted for Ft. 7 The Capitole Record February/March 2017 Page!7 NCC Rep Report We started 2017 in full swing thanks to Lorraine hosting our January meeting when our meeting space became unavailable on short notice. Mary taught us a cute Laurie Speltz design Welcome Spring. In February Ann Davis will be teaching Fergerson Frog. The cost of $10 includes everything. Ann does recommend that we bring hand sanitizer as we will be working on a wine glass. Lucy Jo Wirth will be teaching a landscape on a 3x4 canvas in March followed by Bobbie Draves teaching a Gingerbread Bear on a glass block. Lorraine will teach a winter scene in May. It s great lineup and more to come. Just a reminder that a $5.00 check is required to register for the paint-in s, refundable upon attendance. Ann A_gibbons@verizon.net Recipe Kathy Denneler s Crock Pot Chicken with Rice This recipe is for a full crock pot. I would just cut in half for a regular servings. 1 cup uncooked rice 6 chicken tenders of 2 chicken breast 1 small can of mushrooms drained 2 jars of pasta sauce (I used roaster garlic) 1 cup of grated parmesan cheese 1 1/2 cups of mozzarella cheese 2 cups of grape tomatoes halved cook the rice until tender cut up the chicken into bite sized pieces, in large skillet sauté in olive oil (season with garlic and onion powder, salt and pepper) combine all with the chicken (cook on low/med heat until heated thoroughly. If making a small version put in baking dish, put additional mozzarella on top. Place in oven (350 degrees) until the cheese has melted. DIRECTIONS TO THE HERMITAGE From the Woodrow Wilson Bridge: From the Beltway, take I-395 and go about 4.4 miles. Take Exit 4B West (Seminary Road/Route 716). Take a right at the second stop light onto Beauregard Street. Take a left at the first stop light onto Fillmore Street and go 1 block. Turn left into the Hermitage parking lot. From the Cabin John Bridge: From the Beltway, take Exit 52B East (Little River Turnpike/Rt. 236) and go 4.1 miles. Turn left onto Beauregard Street and go 2.1 miles. Turn left on Fillmore Street and go 1 block. Turn left into Hermitage parking lot. Parking: Please park only in the Visitors Lot. Just behind the Visitors Lot is an additional lot you may use. To get to the auditorium go through the lobby and take the elevator down one level or use the stairs. 9 The Capitole Record February/March 2017 Page!9 NCC April 15, 2017 Paint-In Date: Saturday April 15, 2017 Teacher: Bobbie Draves Project: It s a Sugar Coated Winter by Renee Mullins Location: Providence Community Center Time: 10:00am Register: A $5.00 check made payable to NCC of SDP to reserve a space in class is required. Refundable upon attendance IMPORTANT: I will need to order the patterns and distribute them to you at the March meeting, so please register as soon as possible. Thanks. Class Fee: $10.00 includes pattern packet, gesso, and DecoArt Frost Gloss Enamel (green), if painting on a glass block (Though Renee used the Frost Gloss Enamel, I think you could use regular Decoart Gloss Enamel in your color choice) Surface: Your choice/you provide: 8 by 8 glass block (Hobby Lobby has them ½ price every few weeks) or another surface. You may paint on any surface you have that fits the pattern as all paints used are Decoart acrylic. Paints: ( Not Provided) Decoart Acrylic: Avocado, Black Plum, Bright Salmon*, Burnt Orange, Burnt Sienna, Buttermilk, Camel, Cocoa, Colonial Blue*, Country Red, Deep Midnight Blue, Hauser Dark Green, Honey Brown, Lamp Black, Light Buttermilk, Milk Chocolate, Olive Green, Orange Twist, Royal Purple, Sand, Titanium White, Wild Orchid. (* - new 2016 colors, I will share mine if you don t have them, plus I will bring a set of paint to share bring what you have and do not go out and buy the other colors) Prep: For a glass block you will need to apply the Frost Gloss Enamel to the block, let it dry, then trace the pattern. The gingerbread man needs to be solidly basecoated with gesso this takes a while because it needs to dry thoroughly between coats; I did at least 4 coats of gesso. For other surfaces, you will need to pick a background color and basecoat your surface, then trace the pattern no gesso required. I will provide further instructions when I distribute the patterns. Lights: I have a few sets of battery operated lights for inserting into the glass blocks. I will sell them for about $10 a set. Bring: Regular painting supplies and lunch. If you want to use American I have given you a paint conversion below I did my piece on a 5-1/2 inch lid.. The brown in the picture is my kitchen table. In the book, it shows that there is blue in the sky and on the snow, but there is not any blue in this piece. If you want blue in your piece, I would probably use Americana Blue Grey Mist as that is in the conversion for one of the colors. Please make this piece your own. Enlarge the pattern or make it smaller, whatever you want. PREP: Base your piece with Ivory. When dry do a wash with Hippo Gray plus a tad of Ivory over the entire piece. When dry transfer design to your piece, using a light touch. Pattern is on following page. As you may have noticed, our primary means of communication are shifting from telephone and newsletter to , the web, and possibly (perish the thought) Facebook. It is therefore imperative that members check their accounts frequently, especially as events and meeting dates are approaching. As you will have noticed we have had a change in venue for the February paint in to the Hermitage Penthouse. Most of the slate for paint-ins and general meetings are set.
