1 Web site: Phone: (410) From the Pastor Dear Friends, Hopefully, by the time you re reading this newsletter, we ll have begun our building expansion project. As I write this letter, we ve just gotten final approval from the Town of Elkton, and we re dotting the i s and crossing the t s on the contract. So, we re finally building! Hallelujah! During the next few months, there will be changes in our routines, times when we have to park in different places than we re used to, equipment and fences all around, etc. My prayer is that we will see all of these things as blips on the radar screen - that we ll keep them in perspective and always keep our eye on the end result. Before we know it, the project will be completed and we ll have a brand new parking lot, new Sunday School and meeting rooms, a spruced up kitchen and Weldin Hall - and best of all, more space for people to come to know Jesus and be known by Him, so that they will then, make Him known to others. It s an exciting time in the life of our church! Let s work together to get through the up s and down s of the next few months of building. May all that we say and all that we do during this time, and always, bring honor and glory to God s name, and be pleasing in His sight. Thank You In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. Ephesians 2:21 Many thanks go to Faye Camors and her crew of willing workers who transformed the downstairs bathrooms in Weldin Hall from a state of disrepair to a thing of beauty. Thanks for giving so freely of your time and gifts! Knights in Shining Armor By Rev. Don Hurst, Associate Pastor of Visitation Ministries Greeters in bright shining vests will soon be helping people in our parking lot. Volunteers are welcome to a hands-on training session beginning 9:45 AM in the kitchen and then going onto our parking lot on Sunday, October 10, This ministry is even more pertinent as our church begins building. Eight persons have already attended the first training session, but there is room for more. You may contact Don Hurst (410) x 4 or dhurst30@ comcast.net for more information or simply show up 10/10/10. October 2010 What s inside... 2 MISSIONS OUTREACH He who despises his neighbor sins, but blessed is he who is kind to the needy. Pr o v e r b s 14:21 2 EUMC Set to Crop Walk By Rick Ceresini Crop Walk is an annual event sponsored by Church World Service to raise money for food programs around the world. Walkers are asked to solicit donations from friends and family for the cause. Unlike a walkathon, donors give whatever amount they want to give rather then pledging an amount per mile walked. While our efforts will help feed people all over the world, Crop Walk funds also support our own Community Kitchen right here in Elkton. Elkton UMC has participated in the Community Kitchen for several years. Crop Walk has helped fund that project and has pledged to continue supporting us for years to come. This year s walk will be approximately 3 miles. Participants are asked to meet at Janes United Methodist Church in Rising Sun to register between 1:00 and 2:00 on Sunday, October 3. After the walk, Janes will sponsor a Christian Concert in the church which anyone is welcome to attend. Each fall, churches and organizations in Cecil County band together for the annual Crop Walk. Until this year, it has always been held in North East; but organizers want the event to belong to Cecil County more than any one town, so this year it is being held in Rising Sun. Next year it will come to Elkton. The youth group of our church has been involved in Crop Walk in years past, but this is the first time that we are inviting the entire church population to get involved. This is just one of many ways we can encourage our congregation to get involved in a mission that may speak to our hearts. From now through October 3 there will be a table set up for people to sign up to donate to the cause or take part as a walker. If you would like to donate, but miss our table display, feel free to Rick Ceresini at mrc2007@comcast.net and he will send you an address to make your donation. We are also looking for teams from our Walking for Wellness challenges to get involved. There is no such challenge for us this fall, so Crop Walk gives your team the opportunity to walk again! If you are moved by the plight of the hungry in the world, please join us as a walker or a donor. Every little bit helps to feed someone in need. Volunteers Needed at the Mary Randall Center The Mary Randall Center located at 401 North Street in Elkton is looking for volunteers to work at the center during the hours of 1:00-4:00pm. The center has expanded its services to those experiencing homelessness by offering computer usage, a library, and an assortment of workshops. Volunteers are needed to help supervise the use of computers and the library. No special skills are needed, so if you can spare a few hours a week or every other week, please contact Gayle at Meeting Ground s Autumn Gathering Luncheon and Silent Auction Meeting Ground, the organization that supports the homeless shelters in Cecil County, is hosting their only fundraiser with a Luncheon and Silent Auction on Saturday, October 16th. This year, it will be held at Moore s Chapel on Blake Road (which is off of blue Ball Road) beginning at 11:00 am. This is a wonderful opportunity to gather your friends for a fun time of good food and great auction items. The ticket price is $30 and can be purchased through Terri Lokey before and after the church services. Rotating Winter Homeless Shelter Believe it or not, plans are already being made for the Rotating Winter Homeless Shelter that we support in partnership with Meeting Ground. The first week that EUMC will be hosting the shelter will be November at First Assembly of God. There are several ways you can support the shelter: volunteer to work at the shelter during evening, overnight or early morning shifts, make and serve dinner, make and serve breakfast on the weekends, donate food, or share your gifts of service such as hair cutting, singing, and card playing! Please visit the Missions table at the Stewardship Fair on October 17th to begin the sign up to help at the shelter. After October 17th, the schedule will be posted on the Missions bulletin board in the reception area. The second week we will host the shelter will be January 31-February 7th. Please contact Terri Lokey if you have any questions or tlokey@zoominternet.net.

3 EDUCATION AND EVENTS Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not turn from it. Pr o v e r b s 22:6 Read...Read...Read! By Sheila Hendricks That s what I do. I m a retired teacher, and I love to read. I check out books from the church library, because I m searching for more Christian literature - fact or fiction, books that are thought provoking and which bring my values to the forefront, and books that have been read and enjoyed by others of our faith. A prized book, to me, should look like my Bible - well handled with even a note inside from a previous reader. Our church library offers a casual selection and return policy for everyone. If you need a lift or some inspiration, I encourage you to visit our church library. Blessing Of The Animals On Sunday, October 3rd at 4 p.m., we ll have our second annual Blessing of the Animals in the yard next to the front steps of Weldin Hall. Last year we had nearly 50 pets and their owners in attendance; it was wonderful and very moving! So bring your pets and a lawn chair or blanket on October 3rd as together we celebrate the gifts God has given us in the pets in our lives! Mark Your Calendars for Upcoming UMW Events! FALL FELLOWSHIP BREAKFAST Sunday, October 24 th 8:00 10:30 A.M. Weldin Hall COOKIE WALK Saturday, December 11, 2010 Cookie sales begin at 8:30 A.M. Weldin Hall GUESS WHO? This baby sings as pretty as she looks! 3 Classic Christians Take To The Road In October! October means being on the move for many members of the Classic Christians. A busload of CCs will leave on October 5th to head up to the Hudson River Valley for a three day trip. They ll be there at the height of the fall foliage season and will see such things as West Point, Hyde Park and the Culinary Institute of America, where they ll enjoy a meal. Meanwhile, a smaller group of CCs will head up to Lancaster that same day to see Church Basement Ladies at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre. We ll all come back together for our November meeting, which will be a potluck dinner and program in Weldin Hall on Friday, November 19th, at 6:30 p.m. Anyone 50+ is warmly welcomed to be a part of the Classic Christians! Calling All Women! (answer on page 9) Bishop s Day On The District Bishop Peggy Johnson will be visiting our area on October 12th to meet with clergy and laity. She ll meet with the district clergy over lunch and then with interested laity that evening. The meeting with laity will take place at St. Paul s United Methodist Church on Foulk Road in Wilmington at 7:00 p.m., and anyone interested in talking with her is invited to attend. EUMC s first weekend retreat for women will be taking place January 21-23rd at the Dunes Manor Hotel in Ocean City, MD. The retreat is entitled But Who Will Make the Dinner? and is based upon the Gospel story of Mary and Martha. Women, like Martha in the Bible story, spend so much of their lives caring for others, and making sure everything gets done. This weekend is devoted to women learning to take time for themselves, and time with God. The cost of the retreat (hotel room, meals and materials) is $150 payable in $50 increments (due on 10/15, 11/15 and 12/15). Brochures containing the registration forms can be found at the Welcome Center, on the table across from Rev. Bunnell s office and in the church office. Don t wait - we re anticipating a great turnout!

Youth Group Gift Card Sales By Sandy Wherry Web Questions By Sandy Wherry Sunday School and Youth Group Hayride By Melinda Grablis Please join us on Sunday, October 17, 2010, for our annual Sunday School Hayride at 17 Wray s Way, Rising Sun, MD The hayride is open to everyone; so please feel free to bring friends and family. We will begin at 4 p.m. with pumpkin painting. We will also roast hotdogs and marshmallows. The festivities for the Sunday School will close with a hayride at 5 p.m. At 6 p.m., the Youth Group will have their hayride followed by a bonfire. Hope to see you there. To sign up, please see the bulletin board across the hall from the church office or Melinda at melindagrablis@comcast.net. The youth group is selling gift cards from most companies: Sears, K-Mart, Lands End, Walmart, Lowe s, Home Depot, WaWa, Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, many grocery stores, gas stations, specialty stores, etc. When we sell a gift card (just like the ones you see in all the stores) they give us a percentage back which we will use to fund some activities, use for our mission work (a portion will be given to the church building fund), and to sponsor another Compassion Child. Please consider buying the gift cards from us for your weekly purchases at the grocery store, the gas station, etc., your large purchases: refrigerators, stoves, furniture, and those cards you send to your friends and children for holiday and birthday gifts. We are going to try to answer some questions on our web page link. Please Mrs. Wherry with any questions you would like us to attempt to answer: slwherry@comcast.net. Youth Group news By Sandy Wherry The scavenger hunt was a great deal of fun! Thanks to Rev. Bunnell for all the great clues. We had 4 different car loads of youth members vying for the prize. Thanks to Terri Lokey, Sharlene Lyle, Jeanette Perkins, and Dave Wherry for driving. (I think the drivers had as much fun as the youth members!) I thank all the parents who attended our first meeting and heard about the coming year. Our red folders are back with most of the dates for all our meetings and events. If you missed the meeting, please pick up a red folder on the table outside Rev. Bunnell s office. We have a great weekly team this year: Veronica Marshall and Jeanette Perkins will join us. Many other people will be involved with the youth group this year. They will help with greeting, chaperoning, Lighthouse groups, and Cindy Fetterolf will help with our gift card sales. The youth group has been focusing on the movie To Save a Life. The movie has many topics that pertain to the youth. We have been focusing on a different topic each week. We have a full schedule. Check out the dates on the web. Questions: call Sandy or slwherry@ comcast.net. Solution to Cryptogram (from back page) The Spirit of the LORD will come upon you in power, and you will prophesy with them; and you will be changed into a different person. 1 Samuel 10:5-7
